Luis de la Fuente baffled by Hansi Flick’s lack of ‘empathy’ over Lamine Yamal injury feud as Spain boss says Barcelona criticism 'not important'

The club versus country row between Barcelona and Spain has escalated after Luis de la Fuente called up Lamine Yamal for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The Spain boss fired back at Hansi Flick's complaints about player welfare, expressing surprise at the Barca manager's comments and defending his decision to include the teenager.

  • De la Fuente vs Flick continues

The Spain manager has hit back at Flick’s criticism over the handling of Yamal after naming the teenager in his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria. During a press conference, De la Fuente expressed his surprise at the Barcelona manager's complaints, escalating the club-versus-country row over the 18-year-old's fitness.

De la Fuente 'surprised' by Flick's criticism

The conflict ignited last month when Flick accused the Spanish setup of mismanaging Yamal, but De la Fuente has now fired back directly. When questioned about the Barca boss’s comments, he responded: "I was simply surprised by those statements because he was a national team coach, and I believed he had that empathy."

He doubled down on his stance, adding: "Likewise, I say that he was a coach and knows how we players behave. That's what surprises me, that a former coach would have that opinion."

De la Fuente attempted to steer the focus away from the dispute, stating, "We're playing for the World Cup, that's what's really important. The rest isn't important."

  • The background to the Barcelona vs Spain row

Flick’s anger stemmed from the previous international break in September, where Yamal aggravated a groin injury after reportedly being given painkillers to play for Spain against Bulgaria and Turkey. The Barcelona manager was left seething, as the injury subsequently ruled the winger out of four key club matches. "He went with the national team in pain and did not train. They gave him painkillers to play," Flick said last month. "He played 73 minutes and 79, and between matches he couldn't train. That is not taking care of the player. I am very sad about this.”

  • Yamal's workload and current status

Despite reports that Barcelona intended to block the call-up, Yamal has been included in the 26-man squad. The situation is being monitored closely, with De la Fuente confirming the federation is in contact with the club. "We talk to all the players; we know how they're doing firsthand," he said. "We'll see how Lamine develops this weekend and see how much participation he has." The winger's workload has come under wider scrutiny, with a recent FIFPRO report highlighting the "alarming" number of minutes he has played at such a young age.

Horrendous news for Yoane Wissa! Newcastle striker's injury comeback further delayed by several weeks following specialist meeting

Yoane Wissa's injury comeback has been further delayed by several weeks after Newcastle sent him for a meeting with a specialist. The £55 million summer signing will now miss at least five more matches after a setback. The DR Congo international was expected to make his first appearance against Brighton later this month, but those hopes have been dashed.

Wissa's comeback hopes crushed

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has revealed that following a specialist consultation this week, Wissa will need another two weeks before he can be considered match-ready. That timeline now pushes a potential debut to November 2 against West Ham, leaving fans and teammates frustrated by the delay.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMisfortune haunts Wissa from the start

Wissa’s misfortune began before he could even get properly involved at Tyneside, as the striker sustained the knee injury during international duty with DR Congo just a week after joining from Brentford. Remarkably, he hadn’t yet trained with his Newcastle teammates when the blow struck.

Howe explained: "Yoane saw a specialist again yesterday for a check-up on his knee. We probably think now it’ll be eight weeks rather than six from the point of the injury. It’s no recurrence or problem, just slightly longer."

Woltemade takes the spotlight

In Wissa’s absence, fellow summer signing Nick Woltemade has stepped up to lead the line. The £69 million ($93m) German has seized the chance, scoring three goals in four Premier League starts. With Wissa sidelined, Woltemade has shouldered the attacking responsibilities, proving his worth early in the campaign.

Getty Images SportNewcastle fixtures: Which games will Wissa miss?

There is genuine frustration inside the club that Wissa, who had been largely injury-free during four seasons at Brentford, has hit trouble immediately upon joining Newcastle. The timing could hardly be worse, with Howe hoping to field his full-strength squad as the season heats up with a fixture against Nottingham Forest on Sunday lined up next. Despite the setback, the club remains optimistic about Wissa’s eventual contribution. His Premier League experience and goal-scoring pedigree mean that, when fit, he is expected to be a key figure in Newcastle’s front line.

Free agent: Defender who scored vs Everton could now be "willing" to join

A free agent who has already proven himself in the Premier League earlier in his career could now be willing to make the move to Everton.

Garner reveals Everton's change in mentality

The Blues have won three of their opening three league games this season, with the early signs suggesting that positive times lie ahead under David Moyes.

Midfielder James Garner has impressed in the opening weeks of the campaign, scoring in the 2-0 win at home to Brighton, and he has spoken about a shift in mentality that has taken place at Everton under their manager.

“He said to us on day one that he’s not come here to take over a team that’s fighting against relegation – he said it again on day one of pre-season. He sets high standards and we know where we want to be.

“We’ve got a few more faces in over the summer and with the quality we have in the squad now, we all agree with the manager – if you want to achieve big things, then you’ve got to set your standards and your goals high. I think you can see it in us. There is a mentality shift. We’re playing with more confidence, going into games thinking how we are going to take all three points, it’s not just surviving.

“We’ve done that in these first few games. Obviously, the first game [against Leeds] felt like a blip, I don’t think we played well, but we’ve responded and now the aim is to keep building momentum. We want to keep winning and keep that winning mentality – that was the message in the changing room amongst all of us after the Wolves game.”

While Everton’s improvements this season are clear, it is also important that further quality is added to the squad, and they have now been linked with a move for a free agent.

"Brilliant" free agent could be keen on joining Everton

Speaking to Goodison News, former Toffees scout Bryan King talked up the idea of Everton signing left-back Sergio Reguilon on a free transfer, who could be “willing” to move to Merseyside.

“He’s a free transfer, so it would certainly be an option to look at. They’re a bit stretched across the whole defence at the moment, with Branthwaite’s injury concerns. I would imagine that Reguilon would be more than willing to go and join a club like Everton. It seems like Everton are moving in a forward direction, instead of being in a relegation fight.”

Reguilon could be a shrewd signing for Everton, especially with Vitalii Mykolenko picking up an injury prior to the international break, with the 28-year-old an experienced player.

The Spaniard actually scored against the Blues for Tottenham in a 5-0 win back in 2021/22, and he has 81 Premier League appearances to his name.

Reguilon was once hailed as “brilliant” by Noel Whelan, and he could bring a good mix of defensive solidity and attacking thrust to Everton’s team, with a return to English football potentially appealing to him as he searches for a new club.

INEOS to bid 50% below "incredible" star's price as Man Utd scouts spotted

Manchester United are already looking ahead to the January transfer window and could bid for an “incredible” talent once the market period opens.

Manchester United prepare for Premier League return as Onana departs

The international break is in full swing, and supporters of the Red Devils have been left to reflect on a mixed start to the campaign, resulting in one victory, a solitary draw, and a defeat within their first three Premier League matches.

Ruben Amorim will still be reeling from the effects of a shock EFL Cup exit to Grimsby Town, albeit time moves on, and so does the narrative surrounding Manchester United.

In a surprise turn of developments, Andre Onana is set to join Trabzonspor on loan, something that Fabrizio Romano has added further context to via his platform on social media outlet X.

He stated: “André Onana agrees to join Trabzonspor, here we go! All contracts are now signed on player side, waiting on counter approval from Trabzonspor and travel next week. Deal done on loan from Manchester United as revealed on Saturday, no buy option or loan fee.”

Intriguingly, reports claim that Manchester United could join the race to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi after his failed move to Liverpool during the summer window.

Amorim does appear to be intent on strengthening his defence, but he has an alternative star in his sights that he could look to make inroads to sign once the mid-season market opens for business.

Manchester United set to submit Zeno Debast January bid

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United are set to submit a January bid for Sporting Lisbon defender Zeno Debast after they’ve been spotted scouting him over the last few weeks. Arsenal are also keen on the Belgium international, though the Portuguese champions are holding out for a fee close to £69 million for his services.

However, Manchester United are more likely to come in with an offer around the £34.5 million mark, something that may test the waters, but won’t be enough to tempt him to England.

Anderlecht retain a 15% sell-on clause for Debast, and there may be room for negotiation on that front for the 21-year-old, who is primarily a central defender and has made five appearances this season.

Labelled “incredible” by scout Jacek Kulig, the Halle-born man would be another worthwhile long-term investment in Manchester United’s backline, though it remains to be seen if they can meet Sporting’s demands.

"Wow" – Sky journalist stunned as Nottingham Forest open talks for "excellent" star

In a move that would solve one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s problems, one Sky Sports writer has been left wowed by reports that Nottingham Forest have opened talks to sign a Champions League-level star.

Nuno outlines Nottingham Forest problems

Just two weeks ago, Espirito Santo wouldn’t have even received a mention in the Premier League’s sack race, let alone be in pole position. But after revealing that his relationship with Evangelos Marinakis isn’t what it once was, the Nottingham Forest boss is suddenly at risk of being shown the door at the City Ground.

Reports even had to reiterate that he would be in charge for Forest’s trip to face Crystal Palace last weekend. That’s how bad things suddenly became. And since then, it has become clearer that Espirito Santo’s main problem lies with the involvement of sporting director Edu Gaspar, who only made the move to work with Marinakis this year.

Given that Espirito Santo recently reaffirmed his position as Nottingham Forest manager, it seems like Marinakis now has a decision to make between two key components at the club. The question that he must face is whether to choose his manager or sporting director.

It should also be said that there is potentially time to solve this problem in a less dramatic way. Speaking to reporters last weekend, Espirito Santo outlined his transfer demands as deadline day approaches, saying: “We need three players – one more goalie and two full-backs because we cannot live with the fear of if something happens to Ola (Aina) and Neco (Williams).”

Nottingham Forest managerNunoEspirito Santo reacts at the end of the match

Now, in a step in the right direction, reports are suggesting that the former Tottenham Hotspur boss could be about to see at least one of those demands met before the deadline.

Nottingham Forest in talks to sign Geertruida

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest are now in talks to sign Lutsharel Geertruida from RB Leipzig in a late move that has left Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley stunned.

With talks underway between Forest and Leipzig regarding the versatile fullback, Critchley took to X, formerly Twitter, to say: “Nottingham Forest going after Lutsharel Geertruida now… wow.

“Capable of playing at right back and centre back, his move to Leipzig hasn’t worked out quite as well as expected… But prior to Bradley’s emergence at Liverpool I always thought he’d be an excellent addition there.

“For me he’s a Champions League level player. Douglas Luiz, Arnaud Kaliumendo, James McAtee, Omari Hutchinson and now Lutsharel Geertruida… Forest have really gone for it in the last couple of weeks! Nuno can’t complain about not being backed… whether all these signings were his idea rather than Edu’s is another question!”

Spurs enter talks to sign a bigger talent than Paz in club-record transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a topsy-turvy transfer window in many ways, making shrewd additions, but also missing out on key targets at various stages of the summer.

Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha and Mathys Tel have all joined the Lilywhites during the off-season, with two of the trio cementing their place in Thomas Frank’s starting eleven.

However, an attacking midfielder has been a priority in recent weeks, but the club’s hunt for new talent in such an area has so far been to no avail.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze have been two players the hierarchy have been in contact with in an attempt to land top-level talent for Frank in his first Premier League campaign at the helm.

His side have failed to complete deals for either of the aforementioned stars, with the latter joining North London rivals Arsenal – leading to other options being considered ahead of next week’s deadline.

Spurs’ hunt to land a new attacking midfielder this summer

Over the last couple of days, Spurs have reportedly made an offer for Como star Nico Paz, with the hierarchy evidently wanting to back the new manager in his quest.

The bid was in the region of £61m for the 20-year-old talent, but the Serie A side rejected the proposal, with the player himself expected to stay in Italy beyond the summer window.

However, their attempts in the market haven’t been deterred, subsequently turning their attention to Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, according to Football Insider.

Their report claims that Frank’s side have entered talks with Unai Emery’s men over a potential deal this summer, with negotiations so far being positive.

The article also states that his current employers don’t want to offload the England international this summer, valuing him at £100m, but may be forced to sell him to satisfy their PSR standing if a huge offer is made.

Why Spurs’ latest target is a bigger talent than Paz

Paz has emerged as a surprise target for Spurs as of late, but it’s understandable when delving into his numbers from the most recent campaign in Serie A.

Their interest in a new number ten is evident after James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski suffered fresh injury setbacks, with both set to be out until 2026 at the earliest.

However, the Argentine may have the tools to fill such a void, netting six goals and registering eight assists for Cesc Fàbregas’ side throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

Paz has also made a stellar start to the new season, firing home a spectacular free-kick whilst netting an assist in the 2-0 win over Lazio last weekend.

There’s no denying he’d be a superb addition, but after just one year in Europe’s top-five leagues, it could also be a risk, spending big money on a star who may never reach such levels again.

A deal for Rogers would be an excellent pickup, with the Englishman thriving in England’s top-flight in recent years – having the experience in such a division that would make him an immediate hit with the fanbase.

He will likely be an expensive addition, costing around £80m, but possesses a better skill set than Paz – as seen when comparing their respective stats from the 2024/25 campaign.

Rogers, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by Lee Hendrie, registered a higher tally of combined goals and assists, whilst posting a better shot on target accuracy rate – offering Frank’s side an added threat in front of goal.

Should the 23-year-old replicate such figures in North London, he would add that further quality in the final third, the hierarchy have been hunting for – adding to the signing of Kudus in such an area.

He also completed more key passes per 90, with more of his efforts being into the final third – offering a needed creative presence in the role behind the centre-forward.

Rogers’ ability to get the ball into dangerous areas is further highlighted by his higher tally of carries into the opposition box – having the end product to either go alone or pick out a teammate, as seen by his goal contributions last campaign.

There’s no denying that Rogers would be a huge addition to the side, but he has the potential to get even better in the years ahead in North London, given his tender age.

The hierarchy need to fork out the sum for his signature to avoid missing out on the Villa star, undoubtedly offering a more complete option than Paz in the immediate and long-term future.

Moeen: 'My skill as a bowler is that I think like a batter'

On bowling alongside Varun: “I’m used to bowling with somebody who is better than me and has more mystery than me”

Knight’s tale on how Moeen turned to spin

With Sunil Narine – the highest wicket-taker of all time for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and last IPL season’s MVP – missing owing to illness, captain Ajinkya Rahane needed another spinner to step up. He turned to Moeen Ali, and he delivered with 2 for 23 on his franchise debut. With Varun Chakravarthy also producing 2 for 17 to stifle Rajasthan Royals (RR) to 151 for 9 in Guwahati, Moeen played the role of the second spinner to perfection, a role he said he has preferred in the past too. Together, they set up KKR’s first win of the IPL 2025 season.”I came on before him [Varun], so my job was to try to bowl as tight as I can. And then maybe he can build a bit of pressure as well or get the wicket,” Moeen said in the post-match press conference. “I’m used to bowling with somebody who is better than me and has more mystery than me, so my job there is to bowl as tight as I can and hopefully that builds pressure for that person to then get wickets.Related

“Retired from international cricket, yeah, but I still play a lot of leagues, and I still try to stay on top of my game because I still want to play for as long as I can and do well.”Moeen dismissed the dangerous Yashasvi Jaiswal as well, but it was his wicket of Nitish Rana that grabbed the most attention. It was a classical offspinner’s dismissal from around the wicket, turning away from the left-hand batter from a good length before pegging middle stump back. He credited his batting nous for his bowling success.”That ball was a nice ball,” Moeen said. “I knew there was a bit of pressure being built and I just tried to bowl a good area, spin the ball as hard as I can. I don’t have the skill as other bowlers, but my job is to contain as much as I can. I think my skill is that I think like a batter. So a lot of the time I’m trying to think what they think and it works in my favour.”Moments after the game, Moeen – who bowled only 48 balls in IPL 2024 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – also spoke to the broadcasters and said he found out about his KKR debut in the morning.

“When the wicket is like this, you’re not going to get 300. You probably won’t even get 200, and it’s great to have these games in between those big games”

“I’ve been practising well, and I just try to be ready all the time,” Moeen said. “I got told this morning that Sunny [Narine] was not well and to just be ready whenever. Obviously, hard to replace Sunny but I felt like I did a nice job of it.”You’re just waiting for your turn and when the chance comes, you try and take it as much as you can. But on some wickets like today, I probably used my experience as much as I could to actually keep it simple, keep the stumps in play, keep the line to the left-handers in particular quite straight and just try and spin the ball.”Moeen also agreed that the spin-friendly pitch was a pleasant change from high-scoring ones, with the first five games of the season breaking all run-rate and six-hitting records.3:45

Has England’s IPL love affair changed?

“When the wicket is like this, you’re not going to get 300,” he said. “You probably won’t even get 200, and it’s great to have these games in between those big games.”Those big-scoring games are great to watch, but it’s a little bit of a false sense of security where it’s a bit too much. But the game is developing. Cricket is getting quicker and faster. And people are just fearless at the moment.”Despite not being a first-choice pick so far, Moeen said he wasn’t disappointed since good sides are tough to break into. Eighteen years since he first played a T20, Moeen still wants to improve.”It’s just learning and trying to get better even at 37 years old,” he said. “It’s a very, very balanced side. The overseas players are amazing, with Sunny and Russ [Andre Russell]. Quinny [Qunton de Kock] is always guaranteed to play and it’s very difficult to get in, but it is how it is in good teams.”
