Ricky Ponting and Delhi Capitals part ways

The former Australian captain had been the team’s head coach for seven seasons

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jul-2024Ricky Ponting will no longer coach the Delhi Capitals, bringing his seven-year association with the franchise to an end before the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025. It is understood that with DC failing to achieve desired results, the owners decided to move on and look for a new head coach.Ponting took over as DC’s head coach in 2018, when the team was called Delhi Daredevils, and has been part of their previous seven IPL seasons. They finished last in the league in his first season as coach but then qualified for the playoffs in 2019, 2020 and 2021. In 2020, DC made the IPL finals for the first time, where they came runners-up to Mumbai Indians. However, they did not qualify for the playoffs in any of the last three years and finished sixth in IPL 2024, winning and losing seven games each in the season.ESPNcricinfo Ltd”As you move on as our head coach, we’re finding it incredibly hard to put this down in words,” DC said in a post on social media. “The four things you told us about in every huddle – care, commitment, attitude and effort – they sum up our seven summers together. Seven summers of you being hands-on, but also hands-off, so that we could become better. As athletes, yes, but more importantly, as human beings. Seven summers of you reaching every training session first, and leaving last. Seven summers of you sprinting out of the dugout during strategic timeouts, and biting your nails off until there were none left.”Seven summers of your dressing room speeches – the speeches, Oh! (Separate post for that loading) Seven summers of your hugs, shoulder pats and fist pumps for us all – newcomer, superstar… and everyone in-between. Thank you for everything, Coach! Like, you often close out, ‘Let’s leave this here mate, grab a beer, get back to work tomorrow, yeah?'”The remaining DC coaching staff comprises director of cricket Sourav Ganguly, assistant coach Pravin Amre, bowling coach James Hopes, and fielding coach Biju George.

Felix Organ stars with bat and ball as Lancashire slip to fifth straight loss

Felix Organ struck 74 not out off 57 balls before Brad Wheal and John Turner destroyed Lancashire’s batting and their hopes of Metro Bank One Day Cup progression.Hampshire had stumbled to 50 for 4 but Organ headlined a fightback with 74 and his second fifty of this season’s campaign. Lancashire then outdid their host’s top-order collapse by sinking to 19 for 5 in the face of Wheal and Turner’s electric new-ball pace. The duo ended up with 3 for 14 and 4 for 24 respectively.Chris Green’s valiant 100 – his first List A century – saved some face but Organ again impressed by taking 2 for 31 with his offspin to complete a 71-run victory and keep Hampshire in the mix at the top of Group A.Hampshire have lost a wicket before the end of the second over in each of their One Day Cup matches so far. Having been stuck in, the trend continued when Joe Weatherley – released by Southern Brave – nicked Will Williams behind. His opening partner Fletcha Middleton lasted until midway through the fifth over when Tom Bailey found bounce and away movement to touch the edge. The first boundary eventually came off the 42nd ball – when Nick Gubbins flicked off his hip – but he played onto his own stumps to make it 32 for 3, with Tom Prest seeing the sag continue to 50 for 4 with a chip to short midwicket. But with so many top-order wobbles so far in the competition, Hampshire know how to right the ship.Toby Albert and Ben Brown put on 44 to steady things and once they had been run out and caught sweeping, Organ and Dom Kelly added 76 to breeze Hampshire to the brink of a seemingly impossible 200. An easing pitch and ball helped, but a proactive approach saw boundaries flow, particularly from Organ’s bat as he reached a 47-ball fifty.Initially a top-order batter, Organ has found a niche for himself bowling offspin and coming in later in the order. But his grounding with the bat has made him invaluable for Hampshire, with scores of 59 and a match-winning 46 not out previously in the competition.Kelly fell for a run-a-ball 36, before Eddie Jack came and went, but Organ spearheaded 62 runs coming off the last six overs to end up on 74, and take his side to 222.John Turner was lethal with the new ball•Getty Images

A now tricky-looking chase overwhelmed Lancashire, as they slipped to 19 for 5 inside 10 overs. Wheal and Turner are not a batter’s dream with their paces in the vicinity of 90mph, and on a pitch offering bounce and movement with the new ball, they were almost unplayable.Scotland international Wheal’s first two victims were Harry Singh – who couldn’t keep down a lifting ball outside off stump to guide to point – and left-hander George Balderson – who couldn’t stop himself nibbling at a ball angling across him.Turner, who hasn’t featured for Trent Rockets yet in The Hundred, crashed into Josh Bohannon’s off stump a ball after seeing the batter dropped, before George Bell was sensationally caught over the shoulder by Weatherley.Green wasn’t going to allow Lancashire set a record low – 59 in their fourth ever List A match in 1963 – as he put on 51 with Rocky Flintoff and moved towards his second format half-century, which came in 48 deliveries.Flintoff was leg before to Organ, Jack Blatherwick slapped to mid off, Bailey was bounced out by Wheal and Charlie Barnard was caught at extra cover as no one could stick with Green long enough to form a match-winning partnership.Williams stayed long enough to allow Green, the best batter on the day, to reach a much-deserved hundred in 94 balls, but next ball he was bowled to give Turner his fourth to complete the win.

Minnu Mani, Priya Mishra share nine wickets to bundle out Australia A

Spinners Minnu Mani and Priya Mishra shared nine wickets between them to help India A bundle out Australia A for 212 on the opening day of the four-day match in Gold Coast. After opting to bat, Australia A were reduced to 144 for 8 before a 60-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Kate Peterson and Grace Parsons helped them past 200. In reply, India A finished the day on 100 for 2 with opener Shweta Sehrawat unbeaten on 40 with Tejal Hasabnis keeping her company with 31 not out.Australia A started on the right note through openers Emma de Broughe and Georgia Voll, who faced little trouble from seamers Sayali Satghare and Shubha Satheesh. Legspinner Mishra, who was the fifth bowler introduced in the 13th over, struck in her second over when she bowled de Broughe with a wrong’un. Mani then got into the act and had Australia A captain Charlie Knott jabbing one to short leg. Mishra then had Nicole Faltum miscue one to cover to have the home team on 68 for 3.File photo: Minnu Mani picked up five wickets to bundle out Australia A•BCB

Voll played a fluent innings at the top, scoring 71 off 95 balls and hitting 12 fours. However, she was caught behind in an attempt to cut left-arm spinner Mannat Kashyap. With Mishra and Mani bowling disciplined spells, Australia A lost regular wickets on a surface that was not as slow and spin-friendly as the one in Mackay for the third one-dayer. Peterson and Parsons, though, showed patience and used the crease well against spin.Mani finally broke the stubborn stand by trapping Parsons lbw from around the wicket before Mishra’s wrong’un did Peterson in.India A’s reply started on a slightly shaky note when Priya Punia was hurried on by a short one from Maitlan Brown. She was a tad late on the pull and was caught at midwicket. Shubha sped up the scoring and looked at ease against the fast bowlers. She was particularly severe on the offspin duo of Knott and Lilly Mills before being trapped lbw by Peterson.Sehrawat was slow to start off but looked at home as the innings went along. By stumps, she and Hasabnis had added 53 in an unbroken third-wicket stand.

He'd be a bigger coup than Mbuemo: Man Utd open talks to sign Pogba 2.0

Bryan Mbeumo has been Manchester United’s number one target in the transfer window over the last couple of weeks, as Ruben Amorim wants to improve his frontline at Old Trafford.

Matheus Cunha has already completed a £62.5m move this window, but it’s evident that the hierarchy are willing to back the 40-year-old in his quest for success.

The Red Devils have so far had two offers rejected for the Brentford star, with their latest offer totalling £62.5m including add-ons – but it’s still not enough to secure his signature.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

Whilst he wants to move to the Theatre of Dreams during the off-season, his current employers have placed a £70m price tag on his shoulders, which could delay such a move.

Given his tally of 20 goals in the Premier League this season, it would be a superb addition, but that doesn’t mean other deals could be just as impressive this summer.

The latest on United’s hunt for new additions this summer

All areas of the pitch have been subject to investment in recent days, with the Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha a player who looks set to be approached this window.

Atalanta star Ederson is another player who’s firmly been on their radar over recent seasons, but a deal has seemed to become unlikely given the difference in valuations.

However, moves have also been made elsewhere, with PSG midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery subject to an enquiry, according to TEAMtalk’s update from earlier this week.

The report claimed that United have made their interest clear in the 19-year-old star, who’s already racked up 125 career appearances despite his tender age.

It also stated that it’s unlikely the French side are set to budge on their current asking price of £85m, in a deal that would be one of the Red Devils’ most expensive in their history.

Why United’s £85m target would be their next Pogba

Paul Pogba still holds United’s club record for the highest fee paid for a player, costing £89m from Juventus back in the summer of 2016, in what was then also an English record.

The Frenchman made over 200 appearances during his second spell at Old Trafford, returning to the club after originally leaving to join the Old Lady on a free transfer.

The midfielder caught the eye in his box-to-box role for the Red Devils, often producing a moment of magic with the ball at his feet, helping the club win the Europa League back in 2016/17.

He would leave on a free transfer once again in the summer of 2022, rejoining Juve before being hit with a doping ban, which has seen him banned for the last 18 months of his career.

However, United could be about to land their next version of the Frenchman this summer, with a move for Zaire-Emery, matching his compatriot in potentially joining in a big-money deal.

He’s previously been compared to Pogba by former Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger, with the supporters needing to get excited by his potential move to Old Trafford this summer.

His underlying stats from the 2024/25 campaign showcase the talent he possesses, having bags of time to emulate Pogba’s success given his tender age of just 19.

Zaire-Emery, who’s been labelled as “one of the best midfielders in the world” by agent Jorge Mendes, has completed 93% of the passes he’s attempted, registering 5.4 passes into the final third per 90 – having the tools to provide chances to those ahead of him.

His talents on the ball are further reflected in his take-on success, completing 54% of his efforts, demonstrating skills way beyond his teenage years, something which is a rarity in the modern game.

He’s also been just as impressive without the ball, winning 51% of his tackles and making 1.1 interceptions per 90, handing Amorim the perfect box-to-box option, just as Pogba was a couple of years ago.

Whilst £85m may be a mammoth fee for such a young talent, he’s already showcased that he’s capable of performing at the highest level – but it’s a scary prospect that he’s going to only develop further.

If he can replicate the levels produced by his compatriot at the Theatre of Dreams, it would be a stellar signing and one that would prove to be a better signing than Mbeumo, given the levels he’s achieved and the heights he could reach in the years to come.

Arsenal decision paves way for Chelsea to sign £68m star with talks opened

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca remains keen to upgrade his attacking options, despite having already signed Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro.

£90m star very open to joining Chelsea with Nicolas Jackson swap possible

The Senegalese faces an uncertain future.

3 ByEmilio Galantini Jul 17, 2025

That is according to recent reports, specifically from Stamford Bridge journalist Simon Phillips, who states that signing new forwards is still a top priority for Maresca after his side’s struggles against the low block throughout 2024/2025.

“Chelsea are going about their transfer business to have a strong end to the window and make sure they are fully equipped to capitalise on this success and go into the new Premier League season,” wrote Phillips on his Substack earlier this week.

“Enzo Maresca has prioritised the attack as his point of improvements, and they want to have deep cover and quality in all areas of the attack to make sure they can break down low blocks – something they all collectively saw as one of the biggest problems they faced last season and will continue to face in the Premier League into next season.”

More player sales will be key to this, however, with UEFA putting pressure on Chelsea to sell squad members and balance out the team, or face not being able to register new signings for the Champions League next season (Kaveh Solhekol).

Having just won the Club World Cup, granting Chelsea a seismic £87.5 million financial windfall, they’ve also sold Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli and Djordje Petrovic for a combined rumoured fee of around £96 million – which will be closer to £100 million when taking into account Mathis Amougou’s move to Strasbourg.

The cost of that transfer was undisclosed, but factoring in their near-£187.5 million cash boost, Chelsea have actually made a profit so far this summer – so there is still money left to spend whilst comfortably avoiding the PSR threshold.

Chelsea are also looking at ‘unofficial swap deals’ as a means to balance out their squad and land key transfer targets (Simon Phillips), with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze chief among the options on their shortlist.

Chelsea given free run at signing Eberechi Eze after Arsenal decision

Earlier this week, it was reported that Chelsea held fresh talks with Eze’s representatives, and TEAMtalk now claim that the Blues could have a free-run at signing the England international, who has a £68 million release clause in his contract.

TT back up suggestions that Chelsea are talking to the 27-year-old’s camp, and what’s more, it is believed that Arsenal have decided to cool their interest in Eze.

Tottenham pulled away in recent weeks too, so Chelsea could now have a free run at signing Eze this summer, and they’re prepared to offer him a “lucrative contract” to tempt the attacker across London to Stamford Bridge.

Eze bagged 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last season, including the game-winning FA Cup final strike against Man City to hand Palace their first ever major trophy.

“Everyone who loves football should enjoy seeing Eze on the pitch,” said Fulham boss Marco Silva in 2024.

“He is a top, top young player and has so much quality with everything he does on the pitch.”

Newcastle and PIF now exploring move to sign £35m Argentina international

Newcastle United are now exploring a move to sign an “extraordinary” £35 million defender ahead of Leeds United, according to a recent report.

Newcastle confident of landing Kudus after missing out on key targets

It has so far been a difficult transfer window for the Magpies, even though they secured a place in next season’s Champions League. Eddie Howe’s side have already missed out on signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, as the Cameroon international closes in on a move to Manchester United, and they have now missed out on Joao Pedro, as he joins Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga is also another target of Newcastle’s, but they have already seen a bid rejected, and the Reds are determined to keep their winger. That means Newcastle are having to identify alternative targets, and according to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Newcastle are now confident they can sign Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United.

The Hammers are looking to sell the attacker in this transfer window, and therefore, they are likely ready to accept less for him than his £85 million release clause.

Newcastle explore move to sign £35m defender ahead of Leeds

As the Magpies weigh up a move for Kudus, according to reliable reporters Craig Hope and Simon Jones of The Daily Mail, Newcastle are looking into a move to sign defender Leonardo Balerdi from Marseille.

The Magpies are in need of a new centre-back this summer, and their search has now taken them to Balerdi, who is the captain of the French side.

The report states that Juventus have been looking into a move for the player, but given their financial situation, Newcastle sense an opportunity to pounce and beat them to his signature. However, they also face Leeds United in this race for the Argentine international, as back in May, they were given a boost in their pursuit as the player refused to rule out a move in this transfer window.

The 26-year-old played 27 times in Ligue 1 last season under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and given he is under contract until the summer of 2028, Marseille are looking to get around £35 million for his services should he leave this summer.

The French side are back in the Champions League next season, but the Magpies will hope the offer to play in the Premier League can help bring the Argentina international to St. James’ Park.

De Zerbi has only worked with the defender for a season, but the Marseille boss was left impressed by his performances last season, as he labelled Balerdi “extraordinary”. He said: “Balerdi? He is an extraordinary player.”

Headingley pitch the victor as Yorkshire, Middlesex pull plug on bore-draw

Middlesex and Yorkshire, second and third in Division Two, will head into the final three games of the Vitality County Championship season separated by just one point after they put the finishing touches on a high-scoring draw on day four at Headingley. The promotion rivals will battle it out with leaders Sussex for two top-flight places in 2025.Middlesex started the final day on 441 for five in their first-innings reply to Yorkshire’s 601 for six declared. They reached the follow-on target of 452 comfortably but were bowled out for 522 in the closing stages of the morning.Former England off-spinner Dom Bess finished with seven for 179 from a marathon 70.4 overs, while in-form Ryan Higgins completed an excellent 155 off 259 balls.Yorkshire’s second innings began shortly before lunch, with a lead of 79, and they reached 150 for two from 35 overs when bad light stopped play at 4.10pm. Opener Adam Lyth made 62 and James Wharton was 50 not out.Yorkshire took 13 points from this 11th round fixture and Middlesex 11.Given the placid nature of the pitch – only two batters across both sides failed to reach double figures during the four days – this final day was unlikely to be one that lived long in the memory, as a crowd of only 237 indicated. It started with no prospect of a win for either side, especially given both wouldn’t want to risk a defeat to their closest rivals in the table. If this had been a final round dead rubber, for example, it would have been no surprise to see a contrived result. But there was absolutely no chance of that in a match with such high stakes.Despite conceding 522, with Sam Robson’s opening 108 yesterday supporting in-form Higgins, Yorkshire bowled tidily and kept the scoring rate below three runs per over.Of the 174.4 overs in the Middlesex innings, 143.4 of them were bowled by the spin of Bess, Dan Moriarty and Lyth.Bess and left-armer Moriarty – nought for 174 from 61 – bowled more overs than they ever had previously done in a first-class innings.Bess led the way impressively, while new ball seamer Ben Coad added two wickets during the fourth morning to finish with three for 54 from 14 overs.Bess made the breakthrough in the day’s second over when he had Luke Hollman caught at second slip by Jonny Bairstow – one-handed at the third attempt, leaving Middlesex 441 for six.Despite being 11 runs short of the follow-on, there were no alarms during the early stages of a day played out under the Headingley floodlights.Higgins reached his 150 off 252 balls. Of his five Championship centuries this season, four have been above 150.But he was next to go, bowled by Coad, who uprooted off and middle stumps. And when Coad bowled captain Toby Roland-Jones shortly after, Middlesex were 513 for eight in the 169th over.Bess then wrapped up the innings, and his third career seven-wicket haul, by getting Tom Helm caught at short-leg and Noah Cornwell brilliantly caught by a diving Jordan Thompson as he ran back from mid-off.Yorkshire started their second innings just before lunch with personal milestones and time in the middle the only targets.Lyth needed 105 to reach 1,000 Championship runs for the season, a milestone Higgins achieved in his innings on day three.Having shared 66 for the first wicket with Fin Bean, he reached his fifty in 63 balls after lunch in no frills fashion. But he fell short of a century and 1,000 when he drove Tom Helm’s seam to short cover on the verge of tea, leaving Yorkshire 149 for two in the 34th over.Earlier, Bean had been trapped lbw by Hollman’s leg-spin for 30, while Wharton added the aggression, pulling two of the three sixes he hit against spin. The latter reached his fifty just after tea, off 55 balls, but the players left the field for the light almost immediately and did not return.

Player's camp in talks with Tottenham, Frank convinced he'd join Spurs

Tottenham are in the market for more players amid the ongoing drama surrounding Morgan Gibbs-White, and new manager Thomas Frank is believed to be pretty confident that they can land one of them.

Daniel Levy is reportedly keen to reinforce Frank’s squad further, after sealing deals for Mathys Tel, Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus already this summer, and while they wait to find out if Gibbs-White is still possible amid Forest’s threat of legal action, the Lilywhites are moving for different targets.

Alongside Gibbs-White, who Tottenham are still hopeful of signing (Fabrizio Romano), Spurs are believed to hold some interest in Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian has reportedly been told that he’s free to find a new club this summer, and it’s been reported that Luiz is pretty keen on a move to Tottenham if Levy decides it’s worthwhile pursuing a deal.

Tottenham apparently want to sign a holding midfielder and new number six before deadline day, which isn’t intertwined with their chase for Gibbs-White (Graeme Bailey), and they remain contenders to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.

The Congolese centre-forward enjoyed the season of his life under Frank at the Gtech Community Stadium last term, scoring 19 Premier League goals, but they face stiff competition from both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe is now turning his attention towards Wissa after walking away from a deal for Hugo Ekitiké, who’s already in advanced talks to join Liverpool (BBC).

While Spurs now face both Newcastle and Forest in the race for Wissa, Frank is believed to be hopeful that he can reunite with his former star behind-the-scenes.

Thomas Frank confident Tottenham will win Yoane Wissa race

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, speaking to TBR Football, Tottenham are currently speaking to Wissa’s camp over a move, and Frank is personally convinced that the former Lorient sensation would choose to join them ahead of Premier League rivals.

“Yoane Wissa’s camp are speaking to four or five different clubs at the moment,” said Bailey.

“Tottenham and Newcastle are two of them, and both would love to sign him. Thomas Frank, who worked with Wissa at Brentford, is confident that he would choose Spurs if it came down to it.”

Wissa evolved into a proven scorer during his final season working with Frank, even joining the 100 club last campaign in terms of total career goals, and there is every reason to believe he could add to this tally at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, Brentford are highly unlikely to let both Bryan Mbeumo and Wissa leave in the same window, so a deal could well hinge on Man United’s attempts to sign his teammate.

The price to sign Wissa, according to reports, is believed to be around £50 million.
