Eze's future at Crystal Palace remains the subject of speculation, with Tottenham eager to bring the England international to north London. The 27-year-old was in the Palace team for Sunday's opener against Chelsea and saw a goal ruled out in a 0-0 draw against the Blues.

Tottenham are believed to be closing in on a move for Eze and manager Glasner was unsurprisingly asked about his attacker after the game against Chelsea. Glasner said he had no reason to leave Eze out at Stamford Bridge, amid the speculation over his future, and insists he remains fully committed to the Eagles.

WHAT GLASNER SAID

He told Sky Sports: "He was picked because he is a Crystal Palace player, and he’s a very good Crystal Palace player. There was no reason not to pick him. It is impossible to draw at Chelsea if everyone is no 100 per cent committed. I know Ebs' clause is gone, so it is the club's decision [whether he goes]. We will see what happens."

Glasner also said he expects Eze to play Crystal Palace's next game on Thursday in the Conference League. He explained: "Eb should have scored a goal today, he had one and it was disallowed. He will come tomorrow to the Crystal Palace training ground, Tuesday off, we take Wednesday and I expect him to be back playing for us against Fredrikstad."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lukaku suffered a muscle strain in his left thigh during the pre-season friendly against Greek side Olympiacos last week. The medical team is set to receive an update on the extent of his injury soon, but the feeling inside the camp is that it is not going to be a minor niggle. After winning the Serie A last term, Conte and his camp are not expected to head into a fresh season without a prolific goal-getter up front.

Nick Woltemade 'a good fit' for the Premier League as Germany legend gives 'compliments' to Stuttgart over €85m Newcastle transfer

Lothar Matthaus backed Nick Woltemade’s Premier League move, highlighting Stuttgart’s transfer stance and why the striker suits English football.

Germany legend Matthaus has praised Stuttgart for their handling of Woltemade's impending transfer to Newcastle United. According to media reports, the Premier League club have agreed a deal worth a potential €85 million (£74m/$100m) for the striker, with a further €5m available in add-ons. Stuttgart confirmed on Thursday that they had received a concrete offer and have released Woltemade from training to finalise discussions.

The transfer represents a major financial success for Stuttgart, who resisted long-term interest from Bayern Munich to secure a much larger fee from the Premier League side. Matthaus noted that Bayern were "not willing to put enough money on the table," suggesting they did not think he would be worth the money after spending big on Luis Diaz. The move now places Woltemade in what Matthaus describes as "the best league in the world," where he will be under pressure to justify the significant investment.

WHAT MATTHAUS SAID

Matthaus told : "One can only praise the VfB management. They did everything right in a very difficult, heated transfer window. Compliments to VfB for staying tough for so long."

He also endorsed the striker's move to England, adding: "He can earn a lot more there. And Bayern wasn't willing to put enough money on the table. Unlike with Luis Díaz, for example.

"I can't imagine Newcastle paying almost 90 million and then benching the player. I believe that Woltemade, with his stature, is a good fit for the Premier League. He now has to assert himself there."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Silva bid farewell to his Wolves team-mates after their Carabao Cup win over West Ham on Tuesday night, having not been included in the squad. Roma and AC Milan had also shown interest, but Dortmund moved quickly to close the transfer. The Black and Yellows have been busy strengthening their attack this summer, with Silva’s arrival coming after the additions of Chelsea pair Carney Chukwuemeka and Aaron Anselmino, Manchester City full-back Yan Couto and Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland.

  • TELL ME MORE…

The 23-year-old, who cost Wolves a record €40m (£34m/$44m) when he signed from Porto in 2020, has struggled to make an impact in England. However, he rebuilt his confidence during loan spells at Anderlecht, PSV, Rangers and, most recently, Las Palmas, where he scored 10 goals last season. Silva brings both potential and European experience to Dortmund. He has made 72 appearances for Wolves, scoring five goals and providing six assists, but has shown flashes of quality in his loan stints. The forward has also represented Portugal at youth level and made one senior appearance for the national team.

Ambitious plans are being drawn up in the West Midlands, with the intention being to step out of the shadows and back into the limelight. Claiming the League One title in record-breaking style last season ensured that a vital first box was ticked.

Birmingham now have their sights set on returning to the Premier League, with big money being invested on and off the field. It has been suggested that minority stakeholder Tom Brady could help to bring American football action to an upgraded St Andrew’s, alongside some of the biggest musical acts on the planet.

THE GOSSIP

Quizzed on whether all of this sounds feasible, former Blues striker Cameron Jerome – speaking to casino.org, who help players find the best online casino – told GOAL: “The city in its own right is the second city in the country behind London. It’s a massive city and a city that probably hasn’t had as much investment as others – like Manchester and others in the UK. There is a lot of scope for growth economically in the city.

“The owners have got big dreams of bringing this all-purpose stadium in. We have seen it with a couple of other stadiums around the country where they have managed to incorporate other events and generate revenue that way. I believe it is only a good thing what they are planning. Whether that materialises or not is another thing. I believe they have to have Premier League status in order to achieve and attract that magnitude of event.”

GettyWHAT JEROME SAID

Birmingham are pushing towards that target in 2025-26, with Jerome adding on how long it will take for the Blues to reach the big time: “I think this season is a progression for them in terms of where they were when the ownership took charge. I believe they have equipped themselves correctly, recruited smartly this season in terms of the acquisitions they have brought in, and they will feel like there is an opportunity to try and get promotion this year.

“The league is a little bit open in terms of there not being a clear, standout candidate. Some of the relegated sides have lost key players and are not looking as strong as previous years. Teams have previously come down and been earmarked for promotion, but now a lot of teams will look at it and think there is an opportunity this year – with the relegated sides in a transition period. There is not an outstanding team in that division so Birmingham are in the mix alongside seven or eight teams that will fancy their chances at having a crack at promotion.”
