'Ready to defend our title' – Sarina Wiegman declares England are 'prepared' for Euro 2025 ahead of massive opener against France

Sarina Wiegman declared that England are "prepared" for Euro 2025 and will give their all "to defend" the title. Wiegman has already carved out a storied chapter in English football history. She guided England to their first major international title at Euro 2022 and then to the final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they narrowly missed out on global glory. Her achievements earned her a contract extension with the English FA, keeping her in charge until at least 2027, a signal of the trust placed in her by the national federation.

AdvertisementWHAT WIEGMAN SAID

As the Lionesses wrapped up their final training session ahead of Saturday’s clash, Wiegman expressed her satisfaction with how things have come together in the lead-up to the tournament.

"The team looks really good, I think we are ready, we had our last session this morning and everyone came through well," she told reporters. "I think we had some good weeks where we trained, we could do some tactics and I think we are very well prepared. We are ready to defend our title. You see the bonding. We have worked really, really hard and I definitely think we are ready to go tomorrow."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since taking the reins in 2021, Wiegman has grown fond not just of her players, but of England itself. She has embraced the country’s culture and its passionate footballing identity.

“I really like the culture [in England]. It’s such a massive sports culture in England," she said. "And in the Netherlands, it’s also a sport culture, but here, at every corner, the whole day on TV, for example, there’s sports, either football or rugby or cricket. And if that’s not there, then there’s something else, but there’s always sports and football is so in society.”

DID YOU KNOW?

While Wiegman remains focused on the current campaign, she admitted she isn’t looking too far beyond her current contract, despite the speculation that she could one day return to club football or lead another national side.

“I’m now really focusing on this tournament,” she replied. “I don’t want to look any further [than her contract length]. You never know what happens in life. Things can change quickly and in your personal life, too. So I just feel that I just love to work with this team. I love to work in England with the FA and I hope that stays for a little bit longer.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 25-year-old is the Yellow-Red’s top target and his decision will shape the club's entire transfer strategy. If he signs, they will focus their remaining transfer budget on strengthening other areas. If not, funds allocated for him could go toward other positions. Although Gala are ready with financial backing, Osimhen remains hesitant and is reportedly waiting for a Premier League bid.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Osimhen was Serie A’s top scorer in the 2022-23 season and helped Napoli win their first league title in 33 years. He’s long been linked with Premier League sides like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United, but no official offers have matched his expectations.

He spent last season on loan at the Istanbul club and scored a whopping 26 goals in 30 Super Lig matches as they claimed the top-flight crown.

+Fluminense vai lançar livro oficial do título do Campeonato Carioca 2022

Babar Azam resigns as Pakistan captain in all formats

Babar says he will continue to play for Pakistan in all three formats, Shan Masood the favourite to take over the Test captaincy

Danyal Rasool15-Nov-20233:16

Hayden: Pakistan’s issues are never to do with leadership group

Babar Azam has resigned as Pakistan captain in all formats following their poor 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, where they failed to qualify for the semi-finals with just four wins in nine matches.”I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world,” Babar said in a statement announcing his decision. “Reaching the No. 1 spot in the white-ball format was a result of the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management but I’d like to express my gratitude to passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey.”Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication. I want to express my sincere thanks to the PCB for entrusting me with this significant responsibility.”Babar scored 320 runs in nine matches during the World Cup – the third highest for Pakistan – at an average of 40 and strike rate of 82.90.No official statement has been made about a potential replacement, but Shan Masood is the overwhelming favourite to take over the Test captaincy with immediate effect. Masood is understood to have been at the Gaddafi Stadium today.

Shortly after the resignation, the PCB issued a statement saying Babar was offered the option to continue as Test captain, while the decision to remove him as white-ball skipper was presented to him as fait accompli. “After consultation with his family, Babar decided to step down and PCB stands behind his decision. PCB respects his decision and continues to support him as a player,””Babar Azam is truly a world-class player and we want him to continue to thrive as a player,” Ashraf said. “He is one of the best batters Pakistan has ever produced. He is our asset, and we will continue to support him.”Speculation around Babar’s future had been mounting since Pakistan’s exit from an indifferent World Cup was confirmed, though there is understood to have been little consensus on a potential replacement. The situation was further complicated by uncertainty around whether the current PCB setup had the authority to sack the Pakistan captain. That prerogative normally rests with the PCB chairman, and while Zaka Ashraf is currently performing that duty, he is the head of the PCB management committee on a temporary basis, a role he had extended for three months by the Pakistan caretaker prime minister. A court in Pakistan ruled the committee did not have the power to make significant changes during their tenure, and were to operate only on a caretaker basis. The removal of a Pakistan captain was widely understood to fall outside the ambit of the committee.Babar Azam quit as Pakistan captain following their 2023 World Cup campaign•Dibyangshu Sarkar / AFP via Getty Images

However, after a lengthy meeting at the PCB headquarters where deliberations on the fate of the Pakistan captain, as well as the coaching staff, took place, Babar resigned. He did not offer a specific reason beyond saying he felt it was the right time.ESPNcricinfo understands Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur and head coach Grant Bradburn will not be sacked – another action this management committee likely lacks the authority to take. However, they will find their roles reduced significantly; neither are expected to be part of the travelling contingent for Pakistan’s next tour, a three match Test series in Australia starting next month. There has been no official word on who will replace them in the coaching setup for that tour, though Mohammad Hafeez, Wahab Riaz and Younis Khan have all been speculated to form part of the travelling contingent in some managerial capacity or another. Zaka Ashraf met all three yesterday, though no reason was officially given for the meeting. Should any of them be tasked with coaching or managing the team in Australia, it is expected they will do so an an ad-hoc basis; permanent coaching appointments are likely beyond the scope of this management committee.Pakistan depart for Australia on November 30, and play a warm-up game against the Prime Minister’s XI at the Manuka Oval from December 6 to 9. The first Test begins in Perth on December 14. After the three Tests, the side also plays five T20Is in New Zealand. There is no word yet on a T20 captain, but ESPNcricinfo understands Shaheen Afridi is the favourite.

Ali Orr swaps Sussex for Hampshire after signing multi-year deal

Ali Orr has become the latest promising young Sussex cricketer to move on from Hove, after agreeing to join Hampshire ahead of the 2024 season, on a multi-year deal.Orr, 22, had been part of the Sussex set-up since the age of ten, and enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2022 when he racked up more than 1500 runs in first-class and List A cricket combined, including three Championship centuries and a career-best 206 from 161 balls against Somerset at Taunton in the One-Day Cup.However, his opportunities were limited in 2023, in part due to a knee injury and a subsequent finger dislocation, and with Sussex missing out on promotion in the County Championship and as well as the knock-outs of both limited-overs tournaments, he has chosen to move on.”I am very grateful for the opportunity to play for Hampshire, it is a club I have always followed very closely,” Orr said. “I’m hoping I can contribute to the success of the club moving forward and can’t wait to get started.”Hampshire challenged for silverware across formats in 2023, reaching T20 Finals Day for a record tenth time before losing the One-Day Cup final by two runs to Leicestershire. The club also finished third in the County Championship after memorable victories over both title contenders, Essex and champions Surrey, in their final two games.Giles White, Hampshire Director of Cricket, added: “Ali has had an encouraging start to his career, he’s got a strong desire to win and I think he is an excellent fit for our squad.”During our discussions he impressed me with his determination to challenge himself and improve. He’s stepped outside of his comfort zone to join us and we are all looking forward to welcoming him to Hampshire.”Orr is the latest high-profile player to move on from Hove, following George Garton’s recent decision to quit his childhood club and link up with his former Sussex coach Mark Robinson at Warwickshire.”Sussex Cricket have agreed to the termination of Orr’s contract for him to make the move and will receive compensation from Hampshire for the switch,” a statement from the club read.”Orr had one year remaining on his contract and was seeking to renegotiate the terms with the Club, however with this not possible, he signalled his intentions to move elsewhere.”Everyone at Sussex Cricket would like to wish Ali all the best in his career moving forward.”

Uncapped Kashvee and Vrinda make biggest splash at WPL auction

Annabel Sutherland was the most expensive overseas player, while Chamari Athapaththu went unsold yet again

Shashank Kishore09-Dec-2023The uncapped Indian pair of Kashvee Gautam and Vrinda Dinesh walked away with top honours at the WPL auction in Mumbai, attracting bids of INR 2 crore (Gujarat Giants) and INR 1.3 crore (UP Warriorz) respectively.Australia allrounder Annabel Sutherland was the most expensive overseas player, attracting the auction’s joint-highest bid at INR 2 crore, with Delhi Capitals exhausting 88.8% of their remaining purse of INR 2.25 crore on her.The biggest surprise was Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu missing out for a second time running. The WBBL’s MVP, the second-highest run getter in the tournament, also failed to make it back into the accelerated rounds of the auction, where teams nominated players from the initial unsold list of players.Related

As it happened – Women's Premier League 2024 auction

Some other significant exclusions were of Deandra Dottin, the former West Indies captain, and Australia allrounder Kim Garth, who were among only three players in the highest price bracket (INR 50 lakh). Scotland’s Kathryn Bryce was the lone Associate player picked at the auction, by Giants at her base price of INR 10 lakh.Ekta Bisht at INR 60 lakh attracted the highest bid (Royal Challengers Bangalore) among capped India players, while Veda Krishnamurthy (Giants) and S Meghana (RCB) went at base prices (INR 30 lakh) in the final accelerated round of auctions after finding no takers early on. Among the big Indian misses was Devika Vaidya, the allrounder, who was expected to be high on the wish list of teams. She was released by the Warriorz, who had bid INR 1.6 crore for her ahead of the inaugural season. In what was a sharp auction where teams mostly looked to fill gaps, the Giants came in with the biggest purse after offloading more than half their squad. Having released four seam-bowlers – Sutherland, Garth, Mansi Joshi and Monica Patel – they went all out to secure the lanky 20-year-old seam-bowling allrounder Kashvee, who plays for Chandigarh.Giants and RCB began an intense tussle before Warriorz swooped in at INR 75 lakh. They pursued the bid until the Giants pipped them right at the end to sign Kashvee at a record INR 2 crore. For perspective, Kashvee’s bid was higher than the one Harmanpreet Kaur attracted (INR 1.8 crore) at the inaugural auction in February.ESPNcricinfo LtdIt was no surprise that Kashvee was in high demand, since skilled seam-bowling allrounders are a rarity. Kashvee is a swing bowler who has worked on improving her pace, based on feedback given to her after the inaugural auction in which she was unsold. At the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy last month, she picked up 12 wickets in seven games at an economy rate of 4.14. Since then, she has also gone on to play for India A in the recently-concluded home series against England A. In June, she was part of India’s triumphant Under-23 squad at the ACC Emerging tournament in Hong Kong.Like Kashvee, Vrinda has been on the radar of the selectors and scouts alike. In August, Vrinda trialled with all five franchises. RCB, the franchise from her home state, first raised the paddle before Giants entered the tussle to quickly elevate the bids. But it was Warriorz, who entered the bidding at INR 65 lakh, who stayed the course to finally sign her for INR 1.3 crore.A prolific scorer over the past two seasons, Vrinda has earned plaudits for her ability to blend consistency with robust power-hitting up front. At 22, she has already broken through the ranks of India A, having recently been part of the squad that played three home games against England A.Earlier this year, she played a key role in Karnataka’s run to the final of the Senior Women’s one-day competition. She finished as the tournament’s fifth-highest run-getter, behind Jasia Akter and Priya Punia, with 477 runs in 11 innings at 47.70. This included 81 in the semi-final against Rajasthan.Chamari Athapaththu’s WBBL exploits weren’t enough to earn her a bid at the WPL auction•Getty ImagesAustralia’s Phoebe Litchfield was the first player up for grabs and was signed by Giants for INR 1 crore. The left-hander, who first broke through as a social media sensational as a 16-year-old in 2019, has had a dream run lately, finishing the WBBL as its third-highest run-getter. She began her international career in India last year, during the T20I series, and made the move up quickly. She kept Grace Harris out of the Australia side earlier this season and was used in the middle order, from where she struck a record-equalling 18-ball fifty against West Indies. Earlier this year, she was handed Test and ODI caps. Also among those who got onto the WPL bandwagon after finding no takers in the inaugural season were the England duo of Danni Wyatt (Warriorz) and Kate Cross (RCB). South Africa quick Shabnim Ismail went to the Mumbai Indians for INR 1.2 crore. The second WPL season is set to be played in February 2024. The first season was played across three venues in Mumbai owing to logistical considerations. The BCCI hasn’t yet made a decision on the venues for the second edition, although Mumbai and Bengaluru are believed to be in the running to host matches.

Head rules himself out of being Australia Test opener

Batting at the top is a specialist’s job in the longest format says Australia’s World Cup winning hero

Tristan Lavalette11-Dec-2023Travis Head believes that opening the batting in Test cricket is a “specialist job” as he ruled himself out of contention to replace David Warner.Having powered Australia to an ODI World Cup triumph with spectacular batting at the top of the order, Head presented a potentially intriguing option to succeed Warner who is set to retire after the upcoming Test series against Pakistan.Australia head coach Andrew McDonald recently hinted that replacing Warner may not come down to a straight like-for-like opening batter. Head had replaced an injured Warner in India earlier this year, where he counterattacked the new ball to average 55.75 across five innings. But Head said he was firmly entrenched in the middle-order where his swashbuckling batting has thrived over the past two years. He believed Warner’s replacement was likely to come from those on the fringes, which include former Test openers Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris who all played in the Prime Minister’s XI game against Pakistan last week.”[Selectors are] happy with me in the middle order,” he told reporters in Perth ahead of the first Test against Pakistan starting on Thursday. “I think [opening] it’s a specialist job. The guys that have been waiting to get into the team for a while deserve the first crack at it. But the conversations are ongoing with everyone…only one for me is [opening in] the subcontinent. I don’t see myself moving around too much in the future.”Related

With his position entrenched, Head’s focus turned to quickly switching to Test cricket having been the only player from Australia’s title-winning World Cup team to stay until the end of the subsequent five-match T20I series against India.Ahead of that series, which was seemingly shoehorned into cricket’s congested calendar, there was some interest over whether Head would play having celebrated mightily with his revelry amusingly captured on social media. He played the final three games, but was unable to capitalise on strong starts in each of his innings. The series had its critics and many of Australia’s players returned home to either rest or play in the Sheffield Shield ahead of the Test summer. But Head was keen for opportunities at the top of the order to make his case to be part of Australia’s line-up at next year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA.”I’m not a lock for that T20 World Cup, so I wanted to present and try to perform and try and get myself in that team. We felt like that was the greater opportunity to play the three T20s [than Shield],” Head said. “We haven’t got many T20 opportunities coming up over the next little bit, so it was sort of that last chance to press my claims to make sure that I’m in the mix.”Travis Head at his first red-ball net session since winning the ODI World Cup•Getty Images

In his first hit-out against the red ball for months, Head was perhaps unsurprisingly sluggish against Australia’s quicks during a batting session on the WACA ground on Sunday. He made 99 against West Indies on a sedate Optus Stadium surface last summer, but expected a spicier pitch this time around.”Pretty average yesterday…wicket is trickier,” Head said of his training session. “Nothing really changes from my side of things, I want to be positive. I want to be aggressive, but take the right percentages.”Head said the broken hand that forced him to miss the early stages of the World Cup was still “not 100 percent”. “I think it’s getting close. Training’s a little bit restricted and a little bit sore, but in game time I haven’t felt it since the early games [after returning],” he said.Since his heroics at the World Cup, Head has become something of a cult hero in Australia with even some of his compatriots dressing up as him for Christmas parties. He is set to be a fan favourite at the Perth Test in a city where the locals have had an uneasy relationship with the national team.”It’s been crazy. I did myself sort of dirty with a couple photos, so did the boys a couple times,” Head said of his partying which turned into memes. “The support has been awesome.”It was nice yesterday when the boys came together. There was 10 of us here that played in that [World Cup] and you can still feel the buzz and positive energy.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Cunha arrives to Old Trafford off the back of a standout season with Wolves, netting 15 Premier League goals and registering six assists. The No. 10 shirt comes with weighty history at United, previously worn by legendary stars like Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, and the Brazilian has claimed that he understands the importance of the iconic number.

  • WHAT CUNHA SAID

Speaking to Manchester United's club media, Cunha said: "Yeah, wow. It's something that you always dream about [wearing the No. 10].

"I can mention many players that use this shirt. It's so easy for me. Of course, I think the one that I always think about when I see this number in this shirt for me was Wayne Rooney. He was someone that I grew up to watch him play and I have [watched] many games now.

"Then I swapped shirts with Marcus [Rashford, after a game] also, I have his shirt in my home. But, of course, we know many players used this shirt — [Ruud] van Nistelrooy, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic.

"It's the dream not only to use the shirt, but with all the history they have around the number, it's something beautiful that I have the privilege to do it.

"With every single number, it will be a pleasure to use the shirt. But, yeah, with this one it's something different. Then, of course, the responsibility is coming, and I hope I can do everything like goals, assists and help the team."
