Warner adamant Broad record is not on his mind

David Warner has maintained that he feels in good touch in the Ashes, and Stuart Broad’s record over him is not a concern

David Warner insists Stuart Broad has not got inside his head, despite admitting he has Barmy Army taunts over the English seamer’s record against him stuck on the mind.Warner has retained his spot at the top of Australia’s order for the fourth Test at Old Trafford, as the tourists push for their first Ashes series win in England since 2001 .The decision came after speculation over whether Warner could be squeezed out, after a double failure at Headingley last week took his series average to 23.5.Related

Also of rising concern to a number of ex-players is Warner’s record against Broad. The left-hander has now been dismissed by Broad 17 times in his career, including twice in seven balls against him at Headingley last week.Devoid of any real sledging aimed in his direction in this series, Warner quipped on a podcast this week he had been playing Barmy Army chants over and over while facing up to bat.Included in those is the chant of “Broady is gonna get you” after the opener heard it on repeat throughout the opening Test at Edgbaston and in the matches that followed. But regardless, the 36-year-old insisted Broad’s record against him was not genuinely on his mind when facing up the quick.”I don’t really think about the match-up,” Warner said on the podcast.”You think about the ball that’s coming at you, how you are going to score. He bowls in a great area all the time.”I always love facing Broady. We have two left-handed opening batters and he is one of, if not the best bowler to left-handers in today’s game. He is so good at it.”Jimmy (Anderson) is there as well. These are guys we have watched and played against for a long time.”Stuart Broad celebrates dismissing David Warner again•Getty Images

Warner was also adamant he still feels in fine form ahead of the fourth Ashes Test, arguing Broad simply beat him with two good balls at Headingley. The left-hander began the tour with a fighting 43 against India in the World Test Championship final and made 66 in the second Ashes Test at Lords. Australia have also regularly pointed to the fact he and Usman Khawaja have made three half-century opening stands to help set up their 2-1 series lead.”I feel like I am in great touch,” Warner said. “I have felt good in the nets, leading in I had good sessions against our quicks at Beckenham (before the series).”Lord’s was probably the best I’ve batted in the last two years. Just holding my line.”We have batted in probably the toughest conditions so far. In Leeds, I got two good balls.”You can’t do too much about that … You just have to take it on the chin, can’t do anything about it.”

Following a rollercoaster season with United, the 19-year-old winger has jetted off to Japan for a break. Garnacho posted a series of photos from Tokyo on social media, as he savoured Japanese cuisine and iconic cultural landmarks. The getaway marks a return to Asia just weeks after United’s post-season tour in Honk Kong and Malaysia.

Garnacho was involved in multiple clashes with fans during his recent trip with the Red Devils. In one incident, the Argentine was approached by a supporter who playfully asked him to choose between Lionel Messi and Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo while filming him. Garnacho seemingly shoved the fan away, prompting the supporter to say: "Bro, you pushed me." The brief encounter sparked criticism, with some fans questioning Garnacho's attitude and temperament during public appearances. He was also seen putting his middle finger up to the camera in other meetings with supporters.

Ruben Amorim has advised the young winger to “pray” for an exit route during the current transfer window. The tension between player and club has been growing since United's Europa League final loss, after which Garnacho bluntly described the team’s season as “sh*t”, words that did not sit well with management or supporters.

Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen are both exploring the possibility of a summer move, with the latter offering the intriguing prospect of a reunion with former United boss Erik ten Hag. MCG and SCG to host standalone WBBL games for the first time

The MCG and the SCG are set to host standalone WBBL games for the first time in the competition’s history, as Cricket Australia looks to push the women’s game into the spotlight in the early part of the Australian summer. CA released the WBBL fixtures on Thursday, with the final five matches of the 56-game home-and-away season set to be played at the major venues of the Adelaide Oval, the MCG and the SCG from Friday, November 24 to Sunday, November 26.The MCG and the SCG have not hosted WBBL matches since the competition became a standalone event in 2019-20 while being played in the months of October and November, separate from the men’s BBL in December and January. Alistair Dobson, the head of Big Bash Leagues, said the move to play standalone WBBL games at the major stadiums is a big step for the competition.”We see the evolution of the WBBL continuing to demonstrate that it’s the best cricket league in the world with the best players in the world, and looking to start to play games in the biggest and best stadiums is a really important part of that,” Dobson said. “Doing it on a smaller scale, if you like, this year with three or four matches at different venues is a good way of starting to build momentum as part of a longer-term journey. What that looks like in the medium to long term is all part of what we’ll find out, but it’s a really obvious and natural next step for us.”Related

There have been 12 WBBL matches played at the MCG previously, including the 2015-16 final, but all 12 have been played as lead-ins to men’s BBL games. The SCG has also hosted nine WBBL matches previously as lead-ins to BBL games, but none since December 2018.But Australia’s two most iconic cricket venues will host standalone derbies in the coming season, with Melbourne Stars playing Melbourne Renegades at the MCG on November 25. Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder then face off at the SCG on November 26 as the second of a WBBL double-header, with Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers also playing at the SCG earlier in the day.The MCG famously hosted the women’s T20 World Cup final in 2020 in front of a record crowd of 86,174, although a crowd of that size for the WBBL is not a realistic expectation. The WBBL will endeavour to maximise attendance at the MCG and SCG, and Dobson is hopeful that there will be enough people wanting to turn up to encourage more WBBL games at the bigger venues in the future.”We’ll judge the success of those games in different ways,” he said. “We wouldn’t really put a number on it from an attendance perspective. Obviously, we’ll work really hard with our clubs and the venues and all our partners on getting people there, but equally now it’s about the experience of the players – and the experience of the fans – that are there.Sydney Thunder won the inaugural WBBL title at the MCG•Getty Images

“I think we’re seeing around the world at the moment [that] when you put great cricket on in big famous stadiums, people want to turn up. We’re seeing it in the UK at the moment [with the women’s Ashes]. We saw it in the WPL, and it’s an obvious one from a WBBL perspective to give it a run as well. The players are excited.”The majority of the tournament will remain at the smaller boutique venues that have become synonymous with the WBBL, like the North Sydney Oval and the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Thunder will host games at Cricket New South Wales’ new high-performance facility, Cricket Central, at Sydney Olympic Park. There will also be fewer neutral games, as the WBBL looks to move towards a fully-fledged home-and-away competition after several years of having festival-type weekends, with a host of teams playing several games at one venue in one city.”There’s been a strong message from [the players] for a number of years that reducing neutral games, playing more often and home, all those other things that I think are really key developments for this schedule is based on a lot of strong feedback from players who have a real sense of ownership and legacy of this competition that they feel really passionate about it and want to do anything they can to make it succeed as much as possible,” Dobson said. The WBBL will have much more clear air this season in Australia after being played in the shadow of the men’s T20 World Cup in Australia last summer. It will run concurrently against the men’s 50-over World Cup in India, but there will be no men’s international cricket in Australia during the tournament. The competition will also remain a 56-game season – plus the finals – with no plans at the moment to reduce the season despite the men’s BBL being reduced to a 40-game season, plus the finals. The WBBL will also have its first-ever overseas draft this season, with the format and date to be announced in the coming week.

Big Solanke upgrade: Spurs allocate £100m to sign "sensational" PL star

Last summer’s transfer window was an odd one for Tottenham Hotspur.

On the one hand, Daniel Levy and Co spent a considerable amount of money on youngsters, with £30m going towards Archie Gray and £25m towards Wilson Odobert, and on the other, they spent a club record £65m on Dominic Solanke.

While that fee might have been an overpay, it would be fair to say the former Bournemouth man has so far made good on his price, as evidenced by his recent inclusion in the England squad.

England's Kyle Walker, Dominic Solanke and NoniMaduekeduring training

However, everyone is upgradeable, and if recent reports are to be believed, the club are keen on bringing in another star forward from the Premier League who could take Solanke’s place after just one season.

Tottenham's summer targets

Regardless of who’s in the dugout at the end of the season, Tottenham have a big summer of recruitment ahead of them, with reinforcements needed in most areas of the team.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

One of the names that keeps popping up is LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes, who will be available for free in the summer, would be a brilliant addition to the Lilywhites midfield and has already played with some of the club’s English contingent on international duty.

Another prominent link is former academy prospect Noni Madueke, whose future seems unclear at Chelsea and could be a wise signing for the North Londoners.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Now, one of Spurs’ targets whose future undoubtedly lies away from their current team is Matheus Cunha.

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, the Lilywhites are keen on signing the Brazilian star, along with Liverpool and Arsenal.

Wolverhampton Wanderers'MatheusCunhain action with AFC Bournemouth's Marcus Tavernier and Lewis Cook

It goes a step further, revealing the North Londoners are ‘planning to allocate more than £100m to bring Cunha and his teammate Joao Gomes to North London.’

Conveniently, the former Atlético Madrid ace’s current contract has a release clause worth around £62.5m, so should Tottenham get ahead of their rivals and convince him of their project, it’s not an unrealistic deal, although it could be bad news for Solanke.

How Cunha compares to Solanke

So, if Spurs are able to get ahead of the chasing pack and bring Cunha to N17 in the summer, what does that mean for Solanke? Who would be the club’s starting striker?

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhareacts

Well, the first thing to compare is their raw output from this season, and in this metric, the Brazilian star comes out ahead.

For example, in 29 appearances for the Old Gold, totalling 2376 minutes, he has scored 15 goals and provided four assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.52 games, or every 125.05 minutes.

In contrast, the former Cherries ace has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 33 appearances, totalling 2535 minutes, which comes out to a slightly less impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.94 games, or every 149.11 minutes.

Okay, so what about their underlying numbers then? Who comes out on top when we take a look under the hood?

Unfortunately for the Lilywhites star, it is once again a one-sided comparison in favour of the Wolves ace.

For example, in practically every metric, the “sensational” attacker, as dubbed by reporter Samuel Luckhurst, comes out ahead, including but not limited to non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive passes and carries, key passes and passes into the penalty area, shot and goal-creating actions, successful take-ons, and more, all per 90.

Second first-class competition added to Pakistan's domestic calendar

The format and structure of Pakistan’s domestic system will undergo yet another overhaul, four years on from the last one, with an additional first-class competition and departmental sides returning to the domestic fold. The departmental teams will, however, not play the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy alongside the regional teams, as was the case in the past. Eight departmental teams will instead play a separate tournament, named the President’s Trophy, after the conclusion of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. The number of participating teams in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy has been increased from six to eight. Provincial teams have been done away with, and cities have made a return to the competition. The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will run from September 10 to October 26, while the President’s Cup will start on December 15 to January 30. A further ten regional teams will play the second division of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, named the Hanif Mohammad Trophy, which will run concurrently with the main Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. The eight teams that will play the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy are Peshawar, Karachi Whites, Lahore Blues, Rawalpindi, Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Multan, Lahore Whites and Faisalabad.Related

The departmental teams that will take part in the President’s Cup are Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, Sui Southern Gas Company, Water and Power Development Authority, Khan Research Laboratories, Pakistan Television, National Bank of Pakistan, and State Bank, with an eighth to be confirmed later. Both the tournaments will comprise a league stage and a final, which the top two teams will play.Much of the revamp has not come as a surprise. It was expected that the model proposed and pushed through during Ehsan Mani’s time as chairman, when Imran Khan was the PCB patron, would be done away with, and departments would make a return. But the separation of regional and departmental tournaments means several players could feature for a regional as well as a departmental side. It likely also means, though, with the significantly superior financial muscle the departments possess, that the President’s Cup will de facto become the highest quality first-class competition in Pakistan, supplanting the QeA.”This structure provides a level playing field to regions and departments as they will have the best cricket talent available to them,” director of domestic cricket operations Junaid Zia, who acknowledged the inputs from Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez of the PCB’s cricket technical committee, said. “The separation of regions and departments in different tournaments also provides enhance earning opportunities for cricketers with separate contracts and more matches.”The revamp comes during a season when Pakistan have no home Test matches scheduled at all, with a three-match series in Australia the only Test cricket for Pakistan in the next 12 months. There was no mention from the PCB about the release of a schedule or structure for women’s cricket. ESPNcricinfo was told it would be announced separately.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – European and South American giants Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund settled for a point apiece, playing to a 0-0 draw in their Club World Cup openers in the United States.

Fluminense looked the better side, but wasteful finishing and standout goalkeeping left the match deadlocked at 0-0. Yet, former AC Milan, PSG, and Chelsea star Thiago Silva, who now captains the Fluzão, was proud overall of his team's performance over a strong defensive European team.

"For myself, I think I played well. The team as well. It's very important to compete today against Dortmund because they play well and very strong in the back four or five. It's not easy to penetrate," Silva told DAZN after the match. "But I think I'm very happy for the team as well for the game today."

Fluminense registered three great scoring chances in the second half, putting attempts on target in the 49th, 57th, and 69th minutes, with the latter being their best attempt of the evening. An initial shot on target from the edge of the box saw goalkeeper Gregor Kobel make a splendid diving save, parrying the ball away, but the ball immediately found the boot of another Brazilian attacker who attempted to launch home – only to see Kobel leap from the ground to make an impressive double-save in the moment.

The Bundesliga side, meanwhile, struggled to create anything going forward across all 90 minutes of action. Serhou Guirassy was kept quiet, and while manager Niko Kovac attempted to make changes to propel them towards a result, nothing came about. Dortmund manager Niko Kovac stressed the conditions of the pitch at MetLife Stadium and the weather conditions affected his team's approach.

"Overall, it was a lucky point for us," he explained to DAZN.
"The pitch isn't so easy for us. The humidity was also not so easy for us. It's something the Brazilians are more used to. We were not so aggressive, as I expected, in the first half. It was hard for us, we were running a lot. But overall, OK, we can live with a point."

Kovac said Dortmund have to now chase three points following the result.

We needed to have a good result, and a draw against a Brazilian team is always a good start," he said. "Now the next two games we must win for sure."

All three Americans on Dortmund – Gio Reyna, Cole Campbell, and Mathis Albert – went unused as substitutes.

Gregor Kobel: The Dortmund goalkeeper's terrific double-save in the 69th minute of play proved to be the difference between a point and nothing for the Bundesliga side. He had a few nervy moments when playing out of the back, but that save itself was the defining moment of the game.

    THE BIG LOSER

The Dortmund attack: The Bundesliga side was stagnant all afternoon, lacking threat in and out of the box throughout the 90 minutes. In total, they registered just three shots on target, while no real notable moment came about.

An evening to forget for the attacking contingent of the German club.
