Injury cuts short Peter Siddle's Somerset stint

Peter Siddle has left Somerset after sustaining an injury to his hand which has ruled him out of the remainder of his stint with the club as an overseas player.Siddle, 38, fractured a finger while attempting to take a catch off his bowling during Somerset’s T20 Blast defeat to Hampshire last month and the injury will not heal before the end of his contract later this month.Somerset, who will play Nottinghamshire in the Blast quarter-finals on Friday night after topping the South Group, have signed Ish Sodhi as a replacement for the Blast. I’ll move into doing a bit of coaching, but whether or not I want to do that in the long term, I don’t know.”I think my days of signing long deals over the summer are behind me, but if I come back to England and play, it will be as a replacement to cover someone for a short stint. Postecoglou impressed by Tottenham youngster who's set for more game time

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is planning to hand a Spurs youngster more game time after being impressed by him, with the Lilywhites gem also highly thought of behind-the-scenes at Hotspur Way.

Ange Postecoglou under pressure at Tottenham

Throughout what has been a dismal 2024/2025 campaign, Postecoglou has faced mounting pressure at various points, despite injuries ravaging his squad for large chunks of the season.

Daniel Levy has reportedly got candidates in mind for if he does opt to part ways with Postecoglou at the end of this Premier League campaign, with Tottenham’s list of managerial targets including Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzić, Brentford boss Thomas Frank and even Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi, according to reports.

Their Europa League campaign could be crucial in determining Postecoglou’s long-term future, but they haven’t exactly got off to the best start of their last 16 tie with AZ Alkmaar, tasting a 1-0 defeat in their first leg of their tie on Thursday night.

TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, speaking on air earlier this week, said he’d be surprised if the 59-year-old is still manager next season.

“The fact is they still spend a hundred-odd million plus on transfer fees most seasons and most managers with a few exceptions would bite your arm off for a job like that,” said Jordan (via Football Insider).

“So they’ll find a replacement for Ange Postecoglou. Whether it’s the right one, whether it gets you in the right direction and whether Daniel Levy will continue to make appointment without winning anything, who knows.

“But I would be surprised if you finish 13th in the league, you get knocked out of the cup competitions – besides the credible performance in the League Cup – if he’s still in a job.”

Despite some uncertainty surrounding his long-term position, Postecoglou is believed to be planning for next season behind-the-scenes, and he has already mapped out a more significant squad role for young forward Dane Scarlett.

The 20-year-old was recalled by Spurs from a loan spell at Oxford United, to help Postecoglou cope during the height of their injury crisis, and he has since managed to impress over cameos in Europe.

Scarlett bagged a goal and an assist against Elfsborg during their 3-0 win in late January, with the England Under-21 international also notching an assist against Ipswich Town in the Premier League recently.

Ange Postecoglou planning "bigger role" for Dane Scarlett

According to GiveMeSport, the attacker has done enough to convince Postecoglou that he’s deserving of more chances for next campaign.

It is believed that Postecoglou is planning a “bigger role” for Scarlett at Tottenham for the 2025/2026 season, after being left impressed by the Spurs starlet, with N17 officials also thinking highly of the academy graduate.

Scarlett originally burst on to the scene under José Mourinho, who even likened Scarlett to Marcus Rashford, but it’s taken a while for him to start establishing himself in the first-team since those comments. Now, it appears he could finally be given the opportunity to live up to that tag.

Sam Cook takes hat-trick as Essex defeat Kent

He claims 4 for 18 before Critchley steers run-chase with unbeaten half-century

ECB Reporters Network07-Jun-2023Sam Cook took a hat-trick as Essex beat the Kent Spitfires by four wickets in the Vitality Blast at Canterbury. The visitors recovered from an early-innings scare to close on 155 for 6, Matt Critchley hitting an unbeaten 63.Cook had taken 4 for 18 as Kent were held to 150 for 8, which actually represented a recovery. Joe Denly was the top scorer with 39 and Grant Stewart gave the hosts something to bowl at with 37 from 16 balls, but after slumping to 31 for 4, Critchley’s measured innings saw Essex home with 10 balls to spare.Kent’s decision to bat backfired when, having put on 32 for the opening wicket, they were rocked by a spell of four runs for four wickets in eight balls.Daniel Bell-Drummond got away with an ugly shot off Shane Snater that sailed over the boundary, but he hit the next ball almost vertically and was caught by Feroze Khushi for 22.Cook then sent Tawanda Muyeye’s stumps flying before getting Sam Billings caught behind for a golden duck and he claimed his first Blast hat-trick when Jordan Cox was plumb lbw. With under five overs gone the remaining batters had little choice other than to drop anchor and Jack Leaning had made nine from 20 balls when he hit Critchley to Daniel Sams at forward square leg. When Simon Harmer’s 15th over went for just two the old joke about it not being a test match leapt to mind, but the charge finally came in the 17th when George Linde hit Harmer for six, only to edge the next ball straight to Robin Das.When Cook bowled Denly, Stewart was left with the tail, but an eight-ball final over from Sams went for 27, including two sixes from Stewart, who was eventually caught by Das off the fifth legitimate delivery. A misfield allowed Kent to scramble two off the last ball, but the total still looked below par, until Essex started to bat.Fred Klaassen, back after missing the start of the Blast for personal reasons, had Khushi lbw with the second ball of the innings. It was one for two when Dan Lawrence edged Michael Hogan’s first ball down the leg side where he was brilliantly caught by Billings.Hogan then bowled Das’s middle stump for 11, breaking Sky’s stump camera and when Michael Pepper went for 13, skying Kane Richardson to Billings Essex were 31 for four, but Paul Walter and Critchley steadied their nerves. The former made 27 from 15 before he cut Stewart to Leaning and Sams chipped in with 17 before Linde bowled him.Critchley never allowed the run rate to escalate while Will Buttleman survived an lbw shout from Linde and then reverse swept him for four, before hitting Hogan for six into the Old Dover Road gardens.Fittingly Critchley hit the winning runs when he hit Joe Denly for six over cow corner. The win keeps Essex well in contention for Finals Day and a fifth consecutive defeat leaves Kent’s hopes of qualifying looking almost skeletal.

Aparentemente Abel Ferreira e comissão técnica tentaram empurrar o time do Palmeiras na conversa do vestiário.

Leus du Plooy joins Middlesex on long-term contract

Derbyshire captain to move south after agreeing deal to play at Lord’s until 2028

Leus du Plooy, Derbyshire’s captain, will leave the club at the end of the season after agreeing a five-year contract with Middlesex. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Middlesex were at the front of the queue to sign du Plooy, who had been offered an extension by Derbyshire but has opted to move to London after five seasons with the midlands county.Du Plooy is averaging 98.10 in the County Championship this season, with 981 runs and three centuries. He only took over as captain last year, after Billy Godleman stepped down, and despite his form Derbyshire are currently bottom of Division Two. In the Blast, they narrowly missed out on a quarter-final spot after defeat in their last group game.Born in South Africa but eligible as a non-overseas player due to a Hungarian passport and pre-settled status in the UK, du Plooy has built a productive record across formats, winning contracts in the Hundred with Welsh Fire and Southern Brave, having also impressed in the SA20 for Joburg Super Kings.”We are delighted that Leus has chosen to join Middlesex Cricket and are really excited about what he will bring to the group,” Middlesex’s director of cricket, Alan Coleman, said. “Leus is a player that we have admired for a long time, and he will make a significant difference to our squad in all forms of the game.”The fact that Middlesex were one of several counties chasing his signature, with his contract with Derbyshire finishing this year, is testament to not only his abilities as a cricketer but to him as an individual, and we are just so pleased that he’ll be heading to Lord’s. He is the kind of player and person who will add so much to our dressing room.”The fact that he is Southern Brave’s most expensive domestic signing this year in the Hundred, in the top value bracket of players, shows what a world-class striker of the ball he is, and he will be a huge boost to our T20 squad as well as our red-ball squad.”We can’t wait to welcome Leus to Lord’s and look forward to him enjoying a long and successful career with the club. He will play a big part of everything we are looking to achieve moving forwards here at Middlesex.”In first-class cricket, du Plooy averages 47.17, with 18 hundreds. He has also scored more than 2500 career runs in T20, at a strike rate of 133.50.”I’m incredibly honoured and extremely excited to begin this new chapter with Middlesex Cricket,” du Plooy said. “Lord’s is a special place to play, and it’ll be surreal to call it my home ground next year.”I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone and forming new relationships, creating special memories and improve my game at such a prestigious club.”

Depleted Kent gain foothold through on-loan batters

Jas Singh finishes Notts off before Geddes, Albert respond

ECB Reporters Network26-Jul-2023Injury-kit Kent finished on 102 for 2 in reply to Nottinghamshire’s 350 all out on a rain-hit second day of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash at Trent Bridge. No play was possible after tea. With 10 first-team players either injured or unavailable, Jack Leaning’s Kent side included two batters signed on emergency loan and another brought out of red-ball ‘retirement’ with the county’s resources so stretched. After Ben Slater’s opening-day century, wicketkeeper Tom Moores made 94 as Nottinghamshire secured three batting points, 20-year-old Jas Singhfinishing with 4 for 87 as Kent collected three for bowling. Both teams – Kent in particular – will feel happier with a win here ahead of the break for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup as they seek to preserve their Division One status.Brett Hutton, the Championship’s leading wicket-taker, bagged his 46th scalp of the season when he dismissed former Nottinghamshire team-mate Ben Compton, which makes this the most successful campaign of his career, beating the 45 wickets he collected for Northamptonshire in Division Two in 2018.Related

On the basis of day one, when Kent’s bowlers could have made more of a helpful pitch, the 75 runs Nottinghamshire were able to add to their overnight score in similarly tricky conditions looked to have put them in a good position. The only negative amid their morning’s work was that Moores, unbeaten on 72 overnight and eyeing up a first hundred in a first-class match since August 2020, fell six runs short, edging a catch to gully as a decent ball from Matt Quinn squared him up a touch. His 49-run partnership with Lyndon James had just secured a second batting point. After Kent had taken the second new ball at the start of play, James, who made 36, was caught at second slip after Calvin Harrison had been taken at first and Hutton caught behind as conditions continued to aid the seamers. It had been a decent morning for the makeshift Kent attack, certainly, compared with the first day. Singh, a right-armer who has come though the Kent academy, finished with four wickets in an innings for the second time in only his sixth first-class match.Getting close to Nottinghamshire’s score looked a fairly formidable task for a Kent batting line-up that is even more patched up than their bowling attack. Toby Albert and Ben Geddes, making their debuts on loan from Hampshire and Surrey respectively, arrived with only six first-class appearances between them; Alex Blake, on a white-ball only contract since 2020, is appearing in a first-class match for the first time since July 2019.At tea, nonetheless, they were making a pretty decent fist of their reply, having negotiated a 36-over session with only two losses. Compton was leg-before to a swinging delivery from Hutton, but Albert, a 21-year-old right-hander who batted at No. 3 in Hampshire’s Vitality Blast side, batted nicely for his 37 in only his second first-class match before falling to a good catch by Harrison at second slip.Albert’s loose drive provided a comeback wicket for Luke Fletcher, playing for the first time in the Championship since early May after undergoing surgery for an ankle spur, although the local favourite began limping noticeably soon afterwards and had to leave the field two balls into his 10th over, which will be of concern to Nottinghamshire skipper Steven Mullaney.Geddes also impressed. Another 21-year-old, he posted his maiden first-class century against Kent last summer before being made captain of a young Surrey side in the One-Day Cup. He was unbeaten on 36 out of 102 for 2 at tea before the weather closed in.
