WHAT HAPPENED?
Morrison came through the youth system at United, and was hailed as a future first-team star, as he played alongside Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, but his career did not pan out that way. Instead, after just three first-team appearances, he moved to West Ham in 2012, and has since embarked on something of a nomadic career.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Morrison has played for eight clubs permanently since leaving United and is currently playing for Precision in the United Arab Emirates. Now, he has outlined his plans for once he hangs up his boots, and has confirmed that he is attempting to gain his coaching badges, with one eye on a potential appointment at Old Trafford.
WHAT RAVEL MORRISON SAID
Morrison told the Undr The Cosh podcast: "I've got my B licence now – I did it in the summer.
'I do want to get into some type of coaching [after I retire]. That'd be good. I'd like to go back to United!'

WHAT NEXT?
Morrison is now 32 so he may look to move into coaching sooner rather than later. Given his unique career trajectory, culminating in a call-up to the Jamaica national team, he may well have some sound advice to pass on.
Chelsea have one of the finest academies in Europe, renowned for its depth and quality right down to the foundational roots.
An unrelenting production line has melded into a fearsome senior set-up that has enjoyed several decades as one of the most triumphant Premier League outfits of the 21st century.
Since the turn of the millennia, the Blues have claimed 21 titles, notably including five Premier League and two Champions League trophies. Homegrown superstars have been crucial throughout, with John Terry, Mason Mount and Reece James among the finest.
John Terry celebrates winning the Europa League with Chelsea
However, Chelsea also know when to pounce on an up-and-coming sensation from elsewhere. Take Cole Palmer. Todd Boehly bagged the Manchester City starlet for an eyebrow-raising £42.5m fee in August 2023 and they haven’t looked back.
In hindsight, an absolute bargain. Palmer is one of the deadliest players on the continent, but for the first time in his young and exciting career, he’s met with some measure of adversity.
Cole Palmer's recent struggles at Chelsea
The 2024/25 Premier League season might belong to Mohamed Salah, but last year, Palmer was the talk of the town, a decade younger than Salah and in his breakout year too.

Palmer took English football by storm last season, carrying his form onto the international stage with the Three Lions and seeing his stock rise to almighty heights. Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old is worth a whopping £107m.
Highest valued midfielders in the Premier League (timeless)
Sure, he’s enduring a tough spell right now, but Palmer is still one of the best footballers to have graced Stamford Bridge in a generation, with Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher hailing him as “the best player in the Premier League” back in October.
Palmer’s errant finishing in recent weeks is likely a by-product of the sheer weight of responsibility he has carried since arriving in the capital. He’s missed a slew of chances across his ongoing five-match barren run in the Premier League, but form, certainly in this one’s case, is only temporary.
Chelsea may have beaten Southampton 4-0 in their previous Premier League outing, but The Athletic’s Liam Twomey singled the England superstar out for looking “jarringly out of rhythm.”
The linchpin, the fulcrum of all that is good within Chelsea’s attack, Palmer will be back. However, he still hasn’t quite reached the heights of last year, with a former Cobham reject actually outperforming him this season.
Chelsea reject has been outperforming Palmer this season
Chelsea have lost their fair share of academy stars over the years. Declan Rice, for one, has lifted a European trophy and become a £100m player at Arsenal.
Cole Palmer in action for Chelsea
But the man in question here is Michael Olise, a somewhat similar attacking player to Palmer. He was a sensation at Crystal Palace, almost every divisional rival pawing at him covetously before he moved to the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich last summer.
Hailed as a “wizard” of a playmaker by writer Muhammad Butt, Chelsea were certainly among that envious crowd, for Olise spent seven years at Cobham before being released as a teenager and joining Manchester City, then falling in with Reading, where he would make his professional debut.
While it’s not the fondest memory, Olise was indeed the centre of a gripping transfer saga last summer. Die Roten welcomed him to their ranks in July for about £50m but Chelsea and Newcastle United had previously been hot on his trail, with the Blues even granted an audience by Palace before negotiations broke down.
Now, each passing week must feel a sting to Chelsea’s hierarchy, for the right-sided forward has been a deadly and potent force in Vincent Kompany’s crew, firing 13 goals and placing 12 assists across 36 matches in all competitions.
While Palmer has outscored him this term – with 14 goals from 30 appearances – his creativity has taken a hit with Maresca at the helm. Only the six assists across all competitions for the England international so far, with three coming in that extraordinary win at Molineux in August.
This might feel nit-picky, but it is merely an attempt to highlight the level of attacking midfielder Olise is.
He is quite the player. As per FBref, Olise ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers across the continent for goals scored and shot-creating actions, the top 12% for assists, the top 2% for progressive passes and the top 11% for successful take-ons per 90.
This is a dynamic and deadly range that highlights the quality of a player who Chelsea clearly recognised their mistake in letting go and pushed to re-sign.
Crystal Palace player Michael Olise
Now he’s settled into life at the Allianz Arena, who are sitting pretty at the top of the Bundesliga and meet Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 of the Champions League this month, it doesn’t seem likely Olise will be heading off any time soon.
Former Bayern midfielder Owen Hargreaves has even gone as far as to say he’s the German side’s “best player” who could be “as good as anyone.” Sounds a lot like Palmer, in a way.
Michael Olise in action for Bayern Munich
Obviously, there isn’t an attacking midfielder across the continent who Chelsea would swap Palmer with, such is his quality, but Olise’s success in Germany this term does underline the calibre of prospect who should have been kept on Cobham turf as he rose to the senior stage.
The fact Chelsea pushed to sign him before he left Selhurst Park last summer only corroborates that claim. Just imagine the level that could be reached were both talents wreaking chaos in Maresca’s system.

Just days after Napoli sealed their fourth Scudetto title by beating Cagliari 2-0 in their final game of the 2024-25 campaign, reported that manager Conte could part ways with the club, despite having two years left on his existing deal. On Monday, as Napoli players and the coaching staff celebrated the league title on an open-top bus parade across Naples, star striker Lukaku vowed that he would do his best to change the head coach's mind.
AdvertisementWHAT ROMELU LUKAKU SAID
Speaking to reporters, the Belgian forward said: "There’s too much emotion. We did a great job and I’m happy for all these people, as well as for us, the team, the club and the coach. We never gave up and we deserve this success."
Lukaku added on his bond with Conte: "The call lasted 15 seconds. As soon as I saw his number, I immediately understood and got ready [to leave Chelsea last summer]. He’s my Phil Jackson and I’m his Shaquille O’Neal. I want to enjoy this moment. I have a three-year contract and I will do everything to keep him (Conte) here. I always talk to him, I told him to stay."
GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE
At the same trophy parade, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis hinted that Conte will leave the team as he told reporters: "I wish Conte continuing success in his professional life. Thank you, Antonio. I must give a sentimental embrace to this man, because he took on a team that was on the brink of disaster and together we reinforced it.
"Then at a certain stage, he had to do without a star like [Khvicha] Kvaratskhelia, he managed through incidents and injuries to make do with what he had, using not one, but four or five different tactical systems. He showed the whole world that systems are useless, all you need is a great knowledge of what football really means. So for him who took us all the way to win the second Scudetto in three years, I ask for an applause, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

There remains much unnecessary talk surrounding Jack Grealish’s life away from football, yet focusing in on his performances on the pitch, it’s fair to say the Manchester City man is leaving a lot to be desired.
Plucked from Aston Villa on a then British-record £100m deal back in the summer of 2021, the 29-year-old has scored just 16 goals and provided only 23 assists in 151 games in all competitions.
Of course, judging a player of his ilk purely on goal contributions would be a mistake, with the England star having been central to the club’s treble success, despite only registering five goals and 11 assists that season, with teammate Kyle Walker lauding him as a “nightmare” to play against.
That said, it would be fair to say that the £300k-per-week man has regressed since then, albeit with injuries playing their part, having failed to score a single Premier League goal since December 2023.
With just two goals and five assists to his name in 2024/25 in total, the experienced playmaker has been usurped by the lively Jeremy Doku down the left flank, with the January signing of Omar Marmoush also putting his Etihad future further into doubt.
Jack Grealish's future at Man City
As Caught Offside noted last month, there is set to be something of a ‘squad evolution’ at the Etihad this summer, with Kevin De Bruyne among those looking set to depart amid his expiring contract.
According to the latest reports, Grealish could follow the Belgian in moving on elsewhere at the end of the season, despite the Englishman still having over two years left to run on his existing deal.
The suggestion is that City are willing to accept an offer for their struggling star if their asking price is met, with the wideman said to be ‘unhappy’ at the club at present.
This comes amid reports back in January that Tottenham Hotspur were among those keen on signing Grealish, with it looking as if Guardiola and co are happy to sanction an exit for a player who is now deemed to be worth around £38m, according to Transfermarkt.
Having fallen behind the likes of Marmoush, Doku and Savinho of late – with further competition on the flanks also provided by Phil Foden and the returning Oscar Bobb – Grealish’s exit would seemingly not provide too much of a blow for the Citizens, despite his contribution in recent seasons.

Equally, it looks as if the Manchester side are already brewing a perfect, ready-made replacement in the academy ranks too, in the form of 19-year-old, Emilio Lawrence.
Man City's academy Grealish replacement
Following the success of parachuting Foden and Rico Lewis into the first-team squad in recent years, Guardiola has again turned to the youth ranks this season, with Nico O’Reilly – who scored a brace in the FA Cup triumph over Plymouth Argyle – the standout graduate in 2024/25 to date.
O’Reilly had been a central figure in a blossoming U21 side, prior to his promotion, with the aforementioned Lawrence showing signs that he could well follow suit, amid his dazzling form at Premier League 2 level.
In that competition so far this season, the teenage winger has already chalked up seven goals and a further seven assists in just 17 appearances, with City’s U21s currently five points clear at the top of the table.
The Manchester-born, Scotland youth international has been in the City ranks since signing from Premier League rivals Everton in 2022, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano describing that capture as another “big statement” for the Etihad side.
Also lauded as a “top talent” by Romano, young Lawrence would be a perfect replacement for Grealish on the left flank, having contributed 17 goals and assists in just 31 games in total for the U21 side, as per Transfermarkt.
An ‘incredibly dangerous forward player’ – as per the club’s official website – Lawrence boasts a mouthwatering combination of fleet-footed skill and electric pace, as well as an obvious end product.
In The Pipeline
Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.
There may well be a desire to dip into the market once again this summer, should Grealish lead what could be a raft of exits, yet with the academy – who have seen the U18s reach the FA Youth Cup semi-finals – currently blossoming, Guardiola should consider handing a chance to those already at the club.
Lawrence may not be the only standout attacker in a frightening youth side, although he’s certainly doing enough to warrant an opportunity at senior level.

Super Kings, however, will want their batters to step up
Vishal Dikshit02-Apr-20232:35
Can Super Kings make use of their home advantage?
Big picture – CSK get their home ground back for full seasonIf your reflexes slow down with age, how is Chennai Super Kings’ ‘Dad’s Army’ planning to face Mark Wood’s fiery pace on Monday? Jokes aside, Super Kings’ youngest batter Ruturaj Gaikwad was in blazing form in their opening game and could hold the key again with his ability to put away even good balls to the boundary. Jokes not aside, their other batters need to step up, as coach Stephen Fleming said after the game, because Gaikwad had laid a long runway for them by powering them to 114 for 3 in 12 overs, but their middle over couldn’t take off, managing just 64 more in eight overs.Their most comforting factor, however, is that they return to their den after four long years. They have always picked their spinners based on conditions at Chepauk, batted well there, and won a whopping 40 of their 56 matches at home. Many Lucknow Super Giants players will be unfamiliar with that ground, but so will some Super Kings players. What will boost Super Giants’ confidence will be how their power hitters smashed 16 sixes (and just five fours) on a challenging pitch on Saturday night for what looked like an above-par 193 in Lucknow. They now have to make sure they adapt smartly on a more turning pitch – they collected 73 off eight overs of spin against Delhi Capitals – and prepare for the game quickly after flying from Lucknow to Chennai with only a day’s gap.Team newsQuinton de Kock will fly to Chennai after South Africa’s final ODI against Netherlands finishes on Sunday evening, which makes his participation for Monday highly unlikely. However, Super Giants won’t sweat over it considering the way Kyle Mayers opened with a 38-ball 73 in their first game.Similarly, Super Kings will be without Sisanda Magala, who’s with the South Africa squad, and the Sri Lanka pair of Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana who are missing their first three games because of the ongoing T20Is in New ZealandToss and Impact Player strategyLucknow Super Giants Did Super Giants nail the use of the Impact Player in their first match? Batting first, they brought in K Gowtham after 19.5 overs when Ayush Badoni fell for 18 off seven, and Gowtham walked out to smash a six on the only ball he faced. Gowtham then bowled four overs for just 23 runs inspite of a lot of dew. They could do the same on Monday if batting first, and the reverse if they bowl first. Additionally, they may even pick an extra spinner in place of Jaydev Unadkat, who leaked 39 in three overs against Capitals and has a forgettable record against MS Dhoni and Super Kings both.Probable bat-first XI: 1 KL Rahul (capt & wk), 2 Kyle Mayers, 3 Deepak Hooda, 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Ayush Badoni, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Avesh Khan, 9 Ravi Bishnoi, 10 Amit Mishra, 11 Mark WoodProbable bowl-first XI: 1 KL Rahul (capt & wk), 2 Kyle Mayers, 3 Deepak Hooda, 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Krunal Pandya, 7 K Gowtham, 8 Avesh Khan, 9 Ravi Bishnoi, 10 Amit Mishra, 11 Mark WoodHow MS Dhoni has dominated Jaydev Unadkat in the IPL•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
Chennai Super Kings Super Kings may want to rethink their strategy from the first game. Bringing in Tushar Deshpande for Ambati Rayudu after they finished batting was good thinking, but the bowler leaked 51 runs in just 3.2 overs. But without Magala, Theekshana and Pathirana their only experienced option instead of Deshpande is Simarjeet Singh because Dwaine Pretorius can’t be brought in if they start with four overseas players. Knowing MS Dhoni, he may not make any changes at all.Possible bat-first XI: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Ben Stokes, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Ambati Rayudu, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Shivam Dube, 8 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 9 Mitchell Santner, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Rajvardhan HangargekarPossible bowl-first XI: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Ben Stokes, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Ravindra Jadeja, 6 Shivam Dube, 7 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Rajvardhan Hangargekar, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Simarjeet Singh/Tushar DeshpandeStats that matter Super Giants opener KL Rahul starts slow sometimes but he strikes at 160 against Deepak Chahar and has never fallen to him. It will be Devon Conway’s first game at Chepauk and he already has a promising record against spin in the IPL: 53 runs off 23 balls, striking at 230.43, and just one dismissal Moeen didn’t bowl against Capitals but he probably will in Chennai, especially with left-handed batters Mayers, Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya in the opposite XI. In the IPL, Moeen has leaked at just 6.79 an over to left-hand batters.Pitch and conditionsSpinners picked 11 of the 18 wickets taken by bowlers in the recent ODI between India and Australia, and Monday’s game could be similar, with not too many runs in store. It’s also expected to be hot and very humid with some breeze around. And don’t expect any empty seats because, well, it’s Dhoni returning to his “second home”.
