Eze’s next Olise: Crystal Palace could land "unbelievable" PL talent

Crystal Palace have actually improved in the attacking department this season in some areas, averaging more shots per game with 13.9, ranking eighth in the division for this metric, compared to the last season, where the Eagles were averaging just 12 shots per game.

Being Oliver Glasner’s first full season, we are beginning to see a more complete picture of his playing philosophy, relying less on individuals such as Eberechi Eze and, last season, Michael Olise, and instead focusing on the entire product as one.

Despite seeing certain underlying numbers improve, there is clearly still something missing in the front line since losing Olise, as Palace have only netted 25 goals in 23 games this season so far, making them the fourth-lowest scorers in the division.

With the January window about to slam shut, could Palace get any last-minute business done to improve the top end of the pitch?

Palace's fruitful Olise & Eze partnership

In his three years at the club, before making the move to German giants, Bayern Munich, Olise made 90 appearances in total, scoring 16 goals, providing 25 assists and totalling 5,782 minutes played.

Crystal Palace player Michael Olise

He formed an unbelievable attacking partnership[ with Eze, both extremely skilful, often linking up well with each other, making for enjoyable viewing.

Since Olise left, much of the attacking spark has come from Eze, with the likes of Daichi Kamada, Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah taking time to settle into the club and adjust to their roles.

That being said, Romain Esse has also been signed from Millwall this month, and the 19-year-old could help to produce some high-quality creation in the attacking third going forwards.

Eze, who is still at the club, has made 148 appearances and counting, scoring 32 goals, providing 23 assists and totalling 10,550 minutes played so far.

Whilst the Eagles still have hold of their 26-year-old superstar, the potential to create a new attacking duo is there, which could be addressed at the back end of this January window with a late move for a Premier League star.

Palace could land their next Olise

James McAtee has struggled for consistent minutes at Manchester City, despite Pep Guardiola clearly being a big fan of the 22-year-old. The Englishman has made 14 appearances this season, scoring five goals but only totalling 507 minutes so far.

The young midfielder has been linked with a move to Palace, and a last-minute switch towards the back end of the window cannot be ruled out – as reported earlier this week.

When comparing McAtee’s numbers on loan with Sheffield United in the 2022/23 season in the Premier League, with the numbers Eze is producing at Palace this season and the numbers Olise produced at Palace last season, you can see the extra creativity and progressive qualities he would bring to the side.

Liam Delap, currently playing for Ipswich Town, but used to play in the Manchester City academy alongside McAtee, praised the midfielder by labelling him an “unbelievable” talent. Many in the sport believe the midfielder has a big future ahead of him, and getting guaranteed minutes would only fast-track that development path.

Whilst McAtee may not replace the quality Olise had when he left the club, it would go a long way towards it, bringing in another left-footed creator who looks to provide for others, who is not afraid to beat his man 1v1 and has the creative passing ability to find his teammates.

Ashton Agar and Todd Murphy named in PM's XI with India tour in mind

Selectors have picked an Australia A team but are looking to give a range of players opportunities across two games against West Indies and South Africa ahead of India tour

Finger spinners Ashton Agar and Todd Murphy have been named in the Prime Minister’s XI squad to play West Indies in Canberra as national selectors look to give a range of spinners Australia A opportunities ahead of next year’s tour of India. The PM XI’s match is a four-day day-night first-class fixture starting on November 23 and is being used by the touring team as a warm-up for the two-Test series which begins in Perth on November 30.Australia’s selection panel is treating the game like an Australia A fixture, selecting a very strong squad that will be led by Test understudy wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and features Test squad member Marcus Harris and fringe Test seamer Michael Neser who played in the Ashes last year.Legspinner Mitchell Swepson was a notable absentee from the squad just 24 hours after being left out of the Test squad, having played in Australia’s last four Tests in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Jhye Richardson was also a notable omission given he took five wickets in Australia’s last pink ball Test in Adelaide last year.It is the first of effectively two Australia A fixtures that will be played this summer with another against South Africa in December. ESPNcricinfo understands that a range of players will be used across the two matches with the bowlers likely to be rotated. Both Swepson and Richardson could yet play for Australia A against South Africa in December. Swepson will also have a four-day red-ball Sheffield Shield fixture to play in for Queensland against South Australia at Adelaide Oval while the PM’s XI match is going on in Canberra, where he is likely to do a lot more bowling.Related

'All the skills are there' – Ashton Agar eyes Test recall for India tour

Head returns to Australia ODI squad, multi-format quicks included

Jon Holland is the other spinner who has not been named in the PM’s XI squad having been drafted into both the Australia A Test squad in Sri Lanka midyear but he is currently recovering from injury. He too remains on the selectors’ radar. But it is instructive that both Agar and Murphy have been named given Australia’s Test team will tour India next year for four Tests in February and March.Swepson took 10 wickets at 45.80 and struck at 89.20 in his four recent Test appearances as the second spinner alongside Nathan Lyon. He did bowl better than those figures suggested at times, particularly in Sri Lanka, but his wrist spin was less effective at times than finger spin in those conditions.Agar was a chance to play in the most recent Test series in Sri Lanka until he suffered a significant side strain. Agar has not played Test cricket since 2017 and hasn’t played first-class cricket since April 2021 due to his commitments with Australia’s limited-overs sides. He has a middling first-class record overall averaging 41.28 and striking at 80.7. In the four Test matches he has played he has one less wicket than Swepson, averaging 45.55 and strikes at 97.1 but does have a slightly better economy rate.India’s success with finger spinners Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Axar Patel in home conditions has been noted by Australia. Left-arm orthodox Steve O’Keefe took 12 wickets in Australia’s last Test win in India in 2017 while New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel took 14 wickets including 10 in an innings in a Test in Mumbai in December last year.Chair of selectors George Bailey suggest on Wednesday, ahead of the PM’s XI squad announcement, that there could be some different names being looked at for the India tour compared to the squad picked for the home Tests against West Indies and South Africa.”I would envisage the tour to India may have some different names to it than what the tour does over the [Australian] summer, just because of the conditions,” Bailey said. “They are every chance to be very different. Because it’s an away tour you take a slightly bigger squad anyway. Plus it’s at the back of a [home] summer and there’s a reasonable amount of cricket that would have been played by then.”Glenn Maxwell hasn’t played first-class cricket since 2019•Getty Images

Glenn Maxwell could well come into contention for the India tour and may get the chance to play some first-class cricket in December for the first time since 2019. Maxwell will be available for Victoria’s last Sheffield Shield match before the BBL break against New South Wales on December 1 and possibly the Australia A game against South Africa ahead of the first Test in Brisbane on December 17, although Melbourne Stars’ first BBL match falls on December 13 which could create a scheduling conflict one way or the other.Peter Handscomb is also firmly back in the Test mix for the tour of India as he is in some of the best form of his career having scored runs consistently on a range of different surfaces around Australia over the last 18 months.”Pete remains absolutely on our radar,” Bailey said. “He was selected on the Australia A tour to Sri Lanka in the winter, [but missed it due to] having a baby at the same time. He’s started the season fantastically and finished the last Shield year fantastically.”Both he and Matt Renshaw have been named in the PM’s XI side and both played on Australia’s last tour of India in 2017. Renshaw is one of three specialist openers named in the PM’s XI alongside Harris and South Australia’s Henry Hunt. All three played in the same Australia A side in Sri Lanka midyear.Prime Minister’s XI squad vs West Indies: Josh Inglis (capt), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Aaron Hardie, Marcus Harris, Henry Hunt, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Matt Renshaw, Mark Steketee

'Wild Thing' Lance Morris earns Australia Test call-up

Morris and Queenslander Michael Neser added to the squad for the second Test against West Indies in Adelaide as cover with doubts remaining over Pat Cummins

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Dec-2022Lance Morris, the Western Australia pace bowler who is rated the quickest bowler in Australia, has been called up into the squad alongside Queensland seamer Michael Neser as bowling reinforcement for the second Test against West Indies in Adelaide.Morris, 24, has had an outstanding Sheffield Shield season where he is the leading wicket-taker with 27 and 18.40. He almost bowled WA to a remarkable victory at the Gabba on Sunday.Dubbed ‘The Wild Thing’ – in a nod to former tearaway Shaun Tait – after bursting onto the scene five years ago during a tour game against England at the WACA, where he notably bowled a wayward short delivery first up to Joe Root, Morris has developed a reputation for testing the speed radar.”I’m an attacking and intimidating bowler,” Morris told ESPNcricinfo earlier in the season. “I can get to the early 150s [kph]. I’m just settling into my body now. They say around 26 is when you basically mature as a bowler. I’ve got still room to get faster.”Related

'I think I'll be fine' – Cummins hopeful of being fit for Adelaide Test

WA's new 'Wild Thing' Lance Morris hopes to get even faster

Australia have called up reinforcements after captain Pat Cummins was unable to bowl in the second innings in Perth due to a quad injury although he did return to the field. He is confident of being fit for the day-night Test but with a packed schedule the selectors are unlikely to take risks.”Was he at risk out there doing what he was doing? No,” head coach Andrew McDonald said. “He was able to manage the tempo in which he ran. We felt as though him being out there was helping us so that we were in control of the game.”We can we can leave it right up to the to the toss if we want [to see if he will play]. He’s our captain, we’re going to give him every chance to get out there, and…even the way he marshalled the troops out there was impressive.”Whether Morris cracks into the XI remains to be seen with Scott Boland, who averages 9.55 in Tests, already there as the reserve quick. He has not played since his stunning Ashes performance last season. But Morris could add a point-of-difference to the attack and the selectors may consider it is worth seeing what he can do at the next level.”I think that’s probably No.1 [quickest] I’ve faced in my Shield career,” Kurtis Patterson, the New South Wales captain, said earlier this season. “He was fast and it was No.1 in terms of absolutely consistent pace.”Morris also gave the Indians a working over during a T20 World Cup match in Perth earlier in the summer.”The more I bowl, the more I feel like I’m really grasping what being a fast bowler is all about,” he said. “Hopefully I can keep getting better and continue to bowl fast because it’s a lot of fun.”McDonald is wary of the workload on the quick bowlers with five Tests against West Indies and South Africa in less than six weeks.”Bowling last and a short turn-around, put stress and strain on your bowling stock,” he said. “We know we’ve got other guys that are there ready and available. See how our guys pull up and then move from there.”At the moment as it sits they’ve pulled up well, both Josh and Mitch. Patty’s obviously the major concern, and we erred on the side of caution with him.”Neser played his one and only Test match to-date in last year’s Adelaide day-night Test when Cummins was ruled out with Covid.Squad David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, Michael Neser, Lance Morris, Marcus Harris

Man Utd player ratings vs Athletic Club: Harry Maguire is a dancer, Bruno Fernandes is a boss – Red Devils in dreamland as Ruben Amorim's side take giant step towards Europa League final

Casemiro also starred as United took full advantage of a huge refereeing decision to record a 3-0 win in Bilbao

Athletic Club call their stadium the Cathedral and all of Manchester United's prayers were answered as they earned a dream 3-0 win in the semi-final first leg which means they are already making plans for the final.

Ruben Amorim's side weathered an early onslaught and Victor Lindelof had to clear a shot off the line but United grabbed the lead when Casemiro headed home after some surprising yet outstanding wing-play from Harry Maguire. The visitors went from being in a good place to being in dreamland when Dani Vivian pulled Rasmus Hojlund to the floor and after nothing was given by the referee VAR stepped in, giving United a penalty and the defender a red card.

Bruno Fernandes stuck the penalty away and then scored again before half-time, leaving Athletic completely stunned. United decided against going for the jugular in the second half but take a massive advantage back to Old Trafford, which surely even this chaotic side will not be able to let slip.

Andre Onana (6/10):

Made a smart save from Alex Berenguer which was the only shot he had to save as Athletic fluffed their lines before going down to 10 men.

Leny Yoro (7/10):

Kept a cool head amid the early storm and stay composed throughout the second half too.

Harry Maguire (8/10):

He's not just a defender or a centre-forward, he's a tricky winger too. His nifty footwork sliced Athletic's defence open to set up the crucial first goal. Also defended well other than riding his luck when he brought down Maroan Sannadi for a potential red card and Amorim swiftly took him off to keep him out of further trouble but he had already done more than enough.

Victor Lindelof (7/10):

Made two superb blocks when United were under the cosh, including stopping Berenguer's shot on the line. His brave defending made up for some other silly decisions which saw him lose possession.

Noussair Mazraoui (7/10):

Did well to keep Nico Williams quiet and was effective going forward too, hitting the woodwork with a tremendous strike.

Manuel Ugarte (6/10):

Dispossessed early in the game and suffered amid Athletic's flying start but glanced Maguire's cross to Casemiro for the opener and then played with confidence.

Casemiro (8/10):

A stunning performance all over the pitch, from bailing out Lindelof early on in his own area to heading in the first goal and then commanding the midfield with all his experience and expertise.

Patrick Dorgu (6/10):

Still didn't look completely comfortable and was too committed up the pitch when he needed to defend deeper.

AFPAttack

Alejandro Garnacho (7/10):

Scored an offside goal and was United's most dangerous player in the early stages, limiting how much Athletic could attack. Didn't have a tangible impact on the result but his hard work and tenacity was still important.

Rasmus Hojlund (7/10):

Say what you like about him, he was responsible for the moment which turned the tie completely in United's favour, drawing the foul from Vivian which changed everything. Didn't have many opportunities but his off-tbe-ball work was positive.

Bruno Fernandes (8/10):

Took his Europa League tally to seven goals with his penalty and sweetly-struck second.

Should have had a bigger impact given the advantage and picked up a booking.

Luke Shaw (6/10):

Got 15 minutes and all he had to do was keep his side in control.

Amad Diallo (N/A):

Came on in the 84th minute, an extra piece of good news on a near-perfect night.

Kobbie Mainoo (N/A):

A late appearance off the bench.

Ruben Amorim (7/10):

His side managed the game perfectly and he made sure they didn't do anything silly once they had the advantage.

Approach: Leeds move to sign "special" forward in deadline-busting transfer

Leeds United have received a response after making their first move to sign a “special” new striker, according to a new report.

Leeds search for strikers as Farke calls for more goals

Leeds will be hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Championship when they host struggling Cardiff City at Elland Road on Saturday. Daniel Farke’s side, who most recently drew 0-0 with third-placed Burnley, are currently two points clear at the top of the table, while Cardiff are stuck all the way down in 18th.

The Bluesbirds have, however, had a recent upturn in form. After a dismal run which saw them win none of ther nine games between November 6 and Boxing Day, Omer Riza’s side are now unbeaten in their last seven Champions games – winning three and drawing four.

Ben White repeat: Leeds make contact over landing "top-quality" talent

Speaking after his side’s recent draw with Burnley, Farke suggested that his side need to be more clinical in front of goal moving forward.

“With the ball, I wish in the final third we were more confident,” he said. “When a chance comes along you have to be more on it. When it came down to the final pass, I think we could have been more committed and better prepared.”

Leeds begin move for Saints youngster

To try and bolster their options up-top, Leeds have made a recent approach to sign Southampton forward Cameron Archer. On Thursday, BBC journalist Adam Pope reported that the Lilywhites are targeting Archer, who he said the club have had a long-standing interest in.

TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook, however, reports that Southampton have rejected Leeds’ approach for the striker, who they signed in the summer for a reported fee of £15 million.

Archer, 23, came through the ranks at Aston Villa, but never made his mark at Villa Park and moved to Sheffield United in 2023 after loan spells with Solihull Moors, Preston North End, and Middlesbrough. He signed for Southampton in August, just three months after he rejoined Villa on a permanent transfer.

Once described by former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy as a “special talent”, the Englishman, who can play as either a striker or winger, has since hit just two goals in 21 Premier League appearances for the Saints.

Ipswich Town move to sign skilful young attacker in out-of-window transfer

Ipswich Town have made an out-of-window move to sign a young attacker from Premier League rivals Arsenal, it has been reported.

Ipswich Town’s January signings

The Tractor Boys were relatively busy in the January transfer window, bringing in four new players for the second half of the season. The first to arrive was centre-back Ben Godfrey from Atalanta on loan until the end of the campaign. He was then joined by winger Jaden Philogene on a permanent transfer from Aston Villa.

Then, Ipswich secured the services of attacking midfielder Julio Enciso on loan from Brighton. To round things off for Kieran McKenna’s side, Ipswich signed goalkeeper Alex Palmer from Championship side West Brom on deadline day.

Talking after signing Palmer for £2m last week, McKenna said: “With Christian (Walton) out the department was short with just Aro (Muric) and Cieran Slicker, who is very talented but who hasn’t played as many senior games, so we felt it was important to add.

“Alex coming in gives us another experienced goalkeeper, strengthens the unit and gives us the option to make decisions that we think are going to be best for the team.

“He’s (Palmer) certainly a good communicator – that’s one of his strengths. Christian has specialisms different to Aro, who has got different specialisms to Alex and Cieran Slicker. We just expect each of them to bring the very best of themselves to the team.”

Even though the transfer window is now shut until the summer, Ipswich have still managed to add to their academy ranks for the future, as per a fresh update.

Ipswich Town sign young attacker from Arsenal

As reported by the Daily Cannon, Ipswich Town have moved to sign youngster Jayden Adetiba from Arsenal. It has been claimed that Adetiba had been on trial with Ipswich, Bournemouth and Brentford, and the player’s father has now stated on X that Adetiba has moved to Ipswich.

Presumably penning scholarship terms at the age of 15, Adetiba has been described as a skilful attacker while at Arsenal, where he appeared for the Gunners’ U18 side in pre-season, scoring against Paderborn last summer.

Now, it looks as if he will continue his development in East Anglia, looking to hopefully turn out for the first team at Portman Road in the future.

Arteta really wants £200k-per-week star with Arsenal set for "big summer"

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is personally very keen for the Premier League title chasers to sign a high-earning forward this summer, coming after the Gunners eventually opted not to get him through the door in January.

Arsenal decide not to sign a new forward in January

Despite having some opportunities, with reliable journalist David Ornstein suggesting a deal was there to be negotiated for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, Arteta’s side eventually ended the winter transfer window inactive.

Arsenal are without Gabriel Jesus for the remainder of 2024/2025, with star winger Bukayo Saka also not expected to be back until March, leaving Arteta with less potency in the attacking third.

This was on full display during their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, with Arteta’s side enjoying the bulk of possession but failing to find a way through Newcastle, who put two past them at the other end.

Arteta, speaking after the clash, rued Arsenal’s lack of consistent creativity in the attacking areas.

“We had so many expectations to believe that we could turn it around,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

“We didn’t generate momentum, especially in the first half, the game started in the first action almost with them scoring and then the goal being denied. Then we had the moment, two big moments, with Martin. We didn’t capitalise and in the next action, they scored the goal and obviously the game shifted and then you need to stay cool to score a goal as early as possible.

“We didn’t manage to do that in the first half, had another big chance, and then in the second half, we started to struggle as the game went by. We didn’t generate enough situations in the final third and the game started to get away from us.”

Mikel Arteta really wants Nico Williams at Arsenal

Speaking to CaughtOffside, journalist Charles Watts says Arsenal are set for a “big summer” in terms of potential forward signings.

One of their top targets, £200,000-per-week Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams, is also said to be high on their agenda. According to Watts, Arteta would personally “love” Arsenal to strike a deal for Williams, but the reporter admits it won’t be easy.

“Alexander Isak may well be first choice in Mikel Arteta’s mind. But that would be an incredibly difficult deal to get done given the sort of fee it would take to tempt Newcastle into doing business,” said Watts.

“Benjamin Sesko – another long-term target – is far more gettable and there is a relationship already there, with the player and his representatives and with RB Leipzig as well.

“But there will be rival interest in the Slovenia international. So it’s not a foregone conclusion that Arsenal will land him if they do firm up their interest once again.

“The same could be said for Nico Williams, who is another player Arteta would love to sign, but one who several clubs will be in the mix for come the summer.

“So, whilst I do believe it will be a big summer for Arsenal in the transfer market and that the club will look to be aggressive, it will not be easy given the competition they will face for their top targets.”

Assim, você poderá começar a entrar no clima e sentir as emoções deste importante campeonato mundial.

Delhi out of first-choice pace-bowling options as injury list grows

Delhi are without their five premier quick bowlers – including Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini – mainly because of injuries, and, with Nitish Rana omitted, could well start as underdogs at Feroz Shah Kotla when they host Tamil Nadu in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group B game starting Tuesday.Ishant, the senior in the fast-bowling group, has a side strain. Saini, who was in Bangladesh first with the India A side and then the senior side, has picked up an abdominal strain and is recovering at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Mayank Yadav, who made his first-class debut earlier this month, has torn his hamstring. Simarjeet Singh, Delhi’s highest wicket-taker this season with five strikes, has a heel injury. And Pradeep Sangwan, the team captain last season, was dropped at the start of the current season. As a result, the fast bowlers picked for the game against Tamil Nadu were left-arm quick Kuldip Yadav, the not-too-experienced Harshit Rana, and Pranshu Vijayran, the allrounder who made his debut in the previous game, who have all played one first-class game each.”We don’t have our main bowlers and that is definitely an issue but we would like to control the sessions,” Abhay Sharma, the Delhi coach, said. “The youngsters who get opportunities should make full use of it.”To make things worse, Delhi’s campaign is in a shambles. They lost their opening game of the season to Maharashtra in Pune, and then conceded the first-innings lead to Assam in Guwahati in a drawn game. They currently lie in seventh place on the eight-team Group B table with one point from two games.Dhruv Shorey’s unbeaten 252 against Assam has been one of the rare bright spots in Delhi’s season so far•PTI

Have Delhi been hurt by poor planning?
Rana, an IPL star with Kolkata Knight Riders, had an average of just over 40 for the last two Ranji seasons [2019-20 and 2021-22, with Covid-19 preventing the 2020-21 season from taking place], and was left out this season. While DDCA members have largely been happy with that development, the feeling being that Rana is more focused on white-ball cricket, they haven’t been too pleased with the perceived lack of foresight on the part of the selection committee led by Gagan Khoda.”You had no pre-season camp, no proper training session, and fast bowlers were highly under-cooked,” a senior DDCA official said. “There was no planning, no vision, and what has now happened is exactly what was supposed to happen without systems in place. Some of the pacers were unfit before the season.”Tamil Nadu aren’t doing much better this season, and have just three points from two games and are only one spot above Delhi on the table. Delhi will, therefore, hope Dhruv Shorey (443 runs in four innings, with a 252 not out against Assam) continues to lead the batting charge, and the likes of Himmat Singh and captain Yash Dhull lift their games against Tamil Nadu.

Ramiz Raja is no longer chairman of the PCB. His removal from the post and the current board was formally initiated by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, who is also patron of the cricket board.A 14-member management committee, headed by former board head and prominent media analyst Najam Sethi, and including former Pakistan captains Shahid Afridi and Sana Mir will take interim charge of affairs. The committee will have 120 days in which they are expected to change the PCB’s constitution, bringing back the 2014 version to replace the current one (put in place in 2019).”The cricket regime headed by Ramiz Raja is no more,” Sethi tweeted late on Wednesday. “The 2014 PCB constitution stands restored. The Management Committee will work tirelessly to revive first class cricket. Thousands of cricketers will be employed again. The famine in cricket will come to an end.”

The more formal notification of events had been issued earlier from the Prime Minister’s office and a summary from the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) which confirmed speculation that had built over the last couple of days, prompted by Pakistan’s defeat in Karachi to England. That loss completed an unprecedented 0-3 home whitewash.”Constitution of a management committee to manage the affairs of PCB with full executive powers with the aim of effecting the restoration of Departmental Cricket Structure and other allied matters, including the nomination of a Board of Governors and election of chairman, as stipulated in the 2014 constitution, within a timeframe of 120 days,” the notification said. “The management committee of PCB shall comprise of the Chairman/Chief Executive & required members.”Related

The notification has to be sent to the Law and Justice division to be legally vetted, before being put in front of the cabinet for approval. That is expected to be a mere formality. It is not clear at the moment what implications – if any – this has on the senior executive in the board, though ESPNcricinfo believes there will be a cull. The 2014 constitution did not have scope for a CEO, for instance, with the chairman doubling up in that role. At the moment, the CEO is Faisal Hasnain and the COO – for whom there is a role – Salman Naseer. On Wednesday, Pakistan also announced a squad for the Test series against New Zealand which begins from December 26 in Karachi. New Zealand’s squad are due to arrive on Wednesday evening for their first series of any kind in Pakistan since 2003 – to a board in flux. Both the Pakistan captain Babar Azam and coach Saqlain Mushtaq have come under scrutiny after the loss to England but it is unlikely either of those positions change so soon – in any case Saqlain’s tenure ends in February 2023.Though Ramiz’s expected departure will be the headline consequence, the main order of business for the new committee is the repeal of the current board constitution to reinstate the 2014 version. In fact, the summary sent by the IPC to the prime minister’s office is not specifically about a board change. Its main concern is the constitutional revamp whereby department teams can return to domestic cricket. It is in this roundabout way that the current administration led by Ramiz is being removed – because the 2019 constitution does not recognise departmental cricket, the old constitution that does is being brought back and an interim management committee will be tasked to carry that out.A 14-member management committee, headed by Najam Sethi, is expected to take interim charge of affairs•Associated Press

Getting rid of departments was insisted upon by Imran Khan, when he was Prime Minister, who had for long wanted Pakistan’s domestic scene to replicate that of Australia’s – a provincial model, with six teams made up of Pakistan’s provinces playing in all tournaments. But with Imran’s exit in April 2022, a group of former board members has begun urging the government to go back to the previous domestic structure in which departmental teams such as WAPDA, SNGPL and PIA were part of the first-class circuit – a number of those members, unsurprisingly, make up the proposed interim management committee. Imran’s orders to abolish departmental cricket, the notification read, had been revoked by Sharif, who succeeded him as premier. The PCB had been criticised for abolishing departmental cricket, as it rendered hundreds of cricketers jobless at a stroke. It is worth noting that a number of department sides had shut down their sporting operations even before Imran’s change and, in the current economic climate, there might not be much appetite for such organisations to hire a squad of cricketers.Sethi was head of the PCB in one capacity or another from 2013 until 2018, though the stint was initially embroiled in legal battles with his predecessor Zaka Ashraf; he resigned once Imran became Prime Minister in August 2018. As the first chairman of the league, he oversaw the birth of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and was in charge when the very first visits by international sides were made to Pakistan, ending a period of isolation that began after the 2009 terror attacks on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore. For Ramiz, whose position has been under constant speculation since Imran’s ouster as Prime Minister, the change will bring to an end a short but eventful tenure. It was Imran who had brought in Ramiz in September 2021 on the premise that a former cricketer was best placed to handle cricket matters in the country. But time had been running out for him since the day Imran and his government was ousted in April in divisive circumstances after a vote of no-confidence in the country’s parliament. The impact of that change is still playing itself out across the political spectrum of the country but, unusually at the time, the impact on the PCB was negligible. Usually, with a change of government, a change of the chairmanship and board administration is inevitable and immediate. But as the new government, with a vast coalition of several political parties, worked its way through the most pressing priorities in the country – not least a spiralling economic crisis – Ramiz stayed under the radar and continued in the position. However, momentum against him built after Pakistan’s 0-3 loss to England at home – a run that now includes the Test side losing four Tests in a row at home for the first time in the country’s history and not having won any of the six home Tests played in 2022. Over the last few days, Sethi as well as other senior members in the proposed management committee had begun making a play among political circles in Islamabad.Ramiz has taken on a more hands-on role with cricketing matters during his stint but as a result has been associated more closely with the team’s results than, for example, his predecessor Ehsan Mani. He will no doubt point to achievements in overseeing the completion of two of the highest-profile visits to Pakistan in over a decade – by Australia and England – and being in charge when Pakistan made the semi-final and final of consecutive men’s T20 World Cups and the final of the Asia Cup.December 22, GMT 0645 The story and headline were amended after Ramiz was formally removed as chairman.
