Root key as second day ends in balance after Anderson five-for

England bowlers allow India to add only 88 to their overnight 276 for 3

Varun Shetty13-Aug-20213:08

Harmison: Anderson phenomenal even on a placid pitch

It was more ebb and flow and less one-sided on day two as England counter-punched throughout to significantly limit India’s chances of running away with an early advantage in the second Test. Spearheading the bowling effort once again was James Anderson, who became the oldest man in 70 years to take a Test five-for; he was aided much better on the day by the rest of the line-up, and together they made sure that India added only 88 to their overnight score of 276 for 3.By stumps, England were 246 behind with Joe Root looking solid, after he had put up an encouraging stand with Rory Burns that came just in time as a potent spell from Mohammed Siraj threatened to put India on top once again. The day couldn’t have begun any better for England. Overnight centurion KL Rahul miscued a drive straight to extra cover off Ollie Robinson, second ball of the day, and Anderson had Ajinkya Rahane caught behind off the first ball next over to put an end to a 23-ball effort for India’s vice-captain that yielded a single run. At 282 for 5, India were suddenly in danger of a rapid end to their innings as England made use of the overcast conditions far better than they had on the first day.Related

James Anderson, the lord of Lord's when India come calling

Stats – Anderson the oldest pacer with a Test five-for in 70 years

The last recognised pair – Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja – did come good at that point, even if briefly in a 49-run stand. Pant played with typical panache, stepping out to slash over the bowlers, to pummel through the covers, and on one instance even stepping out and leaving a ball outside off. He was dismissed by Mark Wood, who would eventually go on to get Jadeja as well. India’s last four wickets added 33, a laboured effort that took 16.1 overs of batting around an atypically subdued Jadeja, who was the last man out. That total of 364 signalled a move towards some parity in the game for England.Burns and Dom Sibley looked resolute as they took England to tea, but India would punch back immediately after. They did that via Siraj, and with the use of a strategy they had developed earlier in the year on their Australia tour: the leg trap, a move that involved consistently slanting the ball into batters with packed leg-side fields that eventually proved to be a viable attacking as well as defensive strategy.Siraj was the man entrusted to pull it off, attacking Sibley’s middle and leg stumps until he induced a leg-side strangle that has become endemic for England’s opener in a short career; he had chipped to midwicket at Trent Bridge, and he did it again on Friday after enduring 44 balls for 11. Next ball, India had three catchers in various orientations around midwicket, and that was enough to push the returning Haseeb Hameed to play down a middle stump line to a full delivery that rattled the base of off.It became crucial at this juncture for England that Root would get through Siraj’s spell unscathed, and the bowler didn’t make it easy. He consistently challenged Root’s inside edge with a sustained attack at the stumps. On two occasions he came close to trapping him lbw; on both, Virat Kohli made reluctant reviews that showed the ball was sliding down leg side and India burned two reviews quickly. With the second one, he was visibly distressed with wicketkeeper Pant, seemingly for being too late in telling him that the review wasn’t on.Funnily enough, it was a Siraj over that did eventually release the pressure off England. The 27th over went for three fours, all of them from Burns, who drove neatly past mid-off and followed it up with consecutive pulls to the midwicket boundary to jump from 19 off 78 to 31 off 84. It also managed to take Siraj out of the attack, and began a series of fours, including two from Root at the start of Ishant Sharma’s next over. From 42 for 2 at the end of 26 overs, England swiftly jumped to 73 for 2 at the end of the 30th.The pattern from there was much like that of India’s in the last session of day one, with the sun peeking through the clouds and scoring getting easier. Soon enough, Kohli was forced to turn to Jadeja to tighten up one end in a bid to get to stumps without too much damage.India did pull one back at the end, though: Mohammed Shami going around the wicket for a third wicket that involved the ball coming in at the stumps. Completely against the run of play, Burns was trapped on the back foot, the ball keeping a touch low as he looked to swish it into the leg side. He made it clear he wasn’t pleased with that decision and it ended up costing England a review. But on the balance, at least from the point of view that India didn’t make any massive strides after day one, England will have been the happier team at stumps.

McKenna may have found Ipswich their own Grealish in "unplayable" star

Before the season kicked off, you would have been hard-pressed to find many pundits, or fans for that matter, that predicted Ipswich Town would remain in the Premier League, and understandably so.

However, we are now six games in, and even though the newly promoted side have played three of last season’s top four, they are sat in 15th place with four points to their name, and most importantly, they look like they belong in the top-flight.

Kieran McKenna has his side playing some great football, and the draw against Aston Villa on Sunday is evidence of that, with a brilliant brace from Liam Delap and excellent performances all over the pitch.

In fact, one of the Tractor Boys’ most exciting players has now been compared to Premier League and Champions League winner Jack Grealish.

Grealish's career so far

Before he was winning things left, right, and centre for Manchester City, Grealish first rose to prominence with his boyhood club, Aston Villa.

There, he made 213 appearances across eight seasons, scoring 32 goals and providing 41 assists. However, it wasn’t just his goal involvement and connection to the Villans that made Villa Park fall in love with him; it was also his style of play and personality on the pitch.

During his time in the Midlands, the Englishman was seen as a star who played an ultra-aggressive, direct, and tremendously exciting brand of football.

He was the sort of player with unreal close control who could take on defenders and make something happen all on his own, even if it wasn’t always the smartest move for the team.

He eventually earned himself his big move to City in the summer of 2021, and while his first season was a bit of a struggle and some of that individuality that made him so fun to watch has since been drilled out of him, it’s a move that has undoubtedly worked out for him.

In his 132 appearances for the club, he’s won three league titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup as well.

Overall, while Grealish isn’t quite as fun to watch anymore, he is still an effective winger who has won practically everything there is to win in the club game and a brilliant player to be compared to.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Why Jack Clarke has been compared to Grealish

Yes, the Ipswich star who has been compared to Grealish is none other than summer signing Jack Clarke.

During his commentary on the game against Villa, former Arsenal and Leicester City star Alan Smith claimed the 23-year-old “has a bit of Grealish about him,” and it’s not just the hair.

While there are some obvious and shallow aesthetic similarities between the two wingers, Smith focused on how the former Sunderland ace’s brilliant close control and ability to make things happen with a quick bit of movement reminded him of the City star.

It’s an undeniably flattering comparison for the £20m man, but given how well he has played over the last couple of years and his almost talismanic form for the Black Cats, it’s justified.

For example, in 42 appearances last season, the “unplayable” dynamo, as pundit Adrian Clarke dubbed him, scored 15 goals and provided four assists, equating to a goal involvement on average every 2.21 games

He was even more impressive the campaign prior, racking up 11 goals and 14 assists in 50 matches, equating to a goal involvement every other game.

Ultimately, while it seems unlikely that Clarke will go on to have a career as decorated as Grealish’s, there are some undeniable similarities between how the talented wingers play, and with him in the side, Ipswich stand a great chance of staying up this season.

Unmukt Chand retires from Indian cricket, will play league cricket in USA

Unmukt Chand, India’s 2012 Under-19 World Cup-winning captain, has left Indian cricket at the age of 28. In a note posted on his Twitter account, Chand said he had decided to “bid adieu to BCCI and seek better opportunities around the world”.*Chand has signed up with the Silicon Valley Strikers for the 2021 season of the Minor League Cricket, a national T20 competition in the United States. He will make his debut in the tournament against the Socal Lashings on Saturday.Having relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, he has also signed a multi-year deal with Major League Cricket to support the development of the game in the country by playing with and mentoring the next generation of American cricketers. After his heroics at the Under-19 level – he scored 111 not out in that 2012 final against Australia to win the Player-of-the-Match award – Chand was marked for success at the higher level too, but he couldn’t make the grade, never representing India at the international level.

“I don’t know how I should be feeling cause honestly I am still figuring it out,” he wrote. “The very thought of not being able to represent my country again literally stops my heartbeat for a while.”Personally there have been quite a few glorious moments in my cricketing journey in India. Winning the U-19 World cup for India is one of the biggest moments of my life. It was a special feeling to lift the cup as a captain and bring smiles to so many Indians across the world. I can never forget that feeling. Also, leading India A on numerous occasions and winning various bilateral and tri-series are etched in my memory forever.”Chand played 67 first-class games, scoring 3379 runs at an average of 31.57. He fared better in List A cricket, where he scored 4505 runs at an average of 41.33 in 120 outings. In T20s, he had 1565 runs at an average of 22.35 and a strike rate of 116.09 in 77 games.Chand shot to prominence after the 2012 final, his temperament standing out throughout the tournament as he guided India in unfamiliar conditions in Australia. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Delhi while still in school and hit his maiden first-class century – 151, his best – in his fourth game. He then made his IPL debut at 18, and while Chand failed to impress in the IPL (for Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals), he became a regular for India A and led them to victories against New Zealand A in 2013 and Bangladesh A in 2015.Related

But then a dip in form meant he was no longer a certainty for Delhi either. In 2016, he was dropped from the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy squad. He left Mumbai Indians because of a lack of game time but went unsold at the next IPL auction. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Chand called this phase the lowest point of his life.In 2019-20, he shifted to play for Uttarakhand as a professional but success eluded him there too. In seven first-class games that season, he made 195 runs at an average of 13.92. Chand is still hopeful of playing at the highest level even though he last played a domestic match more than 18 months ago.”Things have not been as smooth in the last few years and opportunities have been denied,” Chand wrote. “Though a part of me is not at peace with the way things have unfolded in the last few years, I still choose to see the silver lining and with fond memories bid adieu to BCCI and seek better opportunities around the world.”Cricket is a universal game and even though the means might change, the end goal is still the same – to play cricket at the highest level.”

Jeff Stelling rips into footage of £60k-p/w Leeds star after Meslier blunder

TalkSPORT pundit Jeff Stelling has ripped into a Leeds United player after some footage emerged following Illan Meslier’s howler that saw Sunderland secure a 2-2 draw in the dying moments on Friday evening.

The Yorkshire side looked on course to go into this October international break on the back of a win against high-flying Sunderland, but Meslier failing to catch the ball resulted in Leeds settling for a point, which stretches their unbeaten run to four games.

The Whites head coach must unleash the talented youngster from the academy.

The Whites will hope this international break allows them the chance to see some of their injured stars return to training. Daniel Farke has been without several key players in recent weeks through different injuries, something that has resulted in the squad being stretched and them potentially looking to the free agent market to bolster their options.

One player who may have been an option for Farke was Christoph Kramer, but Kramer would reject a move to Elland Road, according to a recent report, as he wants to remain in Germany.

Leeds look to be without Max Wober, Ethan Ampadu, and Ilia Gruev for a sustained period of time, as all three players have picked up recent injuries. But one player who could soon be available is winger Daniel James, as Farke hopes to have the Welshman back for their game against Sheffield United after this international break. James has been missing since the end of August, but his return could be a timely boost as Farke looks to have more options in attack.

Leeds will be disappointed with how Friday’s game against Sunderland went, but they will be keen to support Meslier through this time, something that one player didn’t do on the pitch on Friday.

Jeff Stelling rips into £60k-p/w Leeds star after Sunderland draw

TalkSPORT pundit Jeff Stelling has ripped into Leeds United’s Junior Firpo for walking straight down the tunnel after the final whistle went at the Stadium of Light. The left-back went straight down the tunnel after playing a part in the mistake that led to the Black Cats’ equaliser.

Stelling, along with Ally McCoist, discussed the incident on talkSPORT on Monday morning, after Stelling posted on X over the weekend about the incident. The former Sky Sports host said of Firpo, who is believed to earn £60,000 a week at Elland Road: “It’s fair to say that Leeds United fans – they absolutely battered me for trying to defend the goalkeeper.”

McCoist replied: “Can I ask you in which way, shape, or form are you trying to defend him?”

Stelling answered: “What I felt was that afterwards – and Leeds fans are going to tell me this is not the case – Junior Firpo had scored; he went straight down the tunnel at the end, no attempt to console the goalkeeper.

“I’m going to get battered for this again now, but that’s what he needs, and when he next plays for Leeds, I hope every single Leeds United fan gets behind him.”

Ben Slater seals five-wicket win over Yorkshire but Notts fall short of Bob Willis final

Nottinghamshire 296 (Clarke 109, Evison 58) and 174 for 5 (Slater 79*, Duckett 54) beat Yorkshire 73 (Evison 4-13, Fletcher 3-31) and 396 (Lyth 153) by five wicketsNottinghamshire duly completed a five-wicket victory against Yorkshire, seven overs into the afternoon session on the final day and spent the afternoon watching the culmination of Warwickshire’s Championship victory at Edgbaston, a result that squeezed them out of contention for a place in next week’s Bob Willis Trophy. For those unversed in cricket’s most misconceived tournaments, the Bob Willis Trophy pits together the top two in a contest which is, well, considerably less important than actually winning the Championship. A five-day affair at Lord’s which finishes perilously close to October when the Lord’s groundstaff have a square to seed. There was not even a huge amount of interest in England in the World Test Championship final, so the idea is unlikely to take hold..Had Warwickshire failed to win – and it rarely looked in doubt as they rolled Somerset aside for 154 inside two sessions – Nottinghamshire would have finished second in the table and earned a trip to Lord’s to face Lancashire, having failed to win the Championship by only half a point – in which case they would have rued once again the missing of a batting point by four runs in the first innings. Instead, Warwickshire’s 118-run win meant that Nottinghamshire finished the season third, a result that in many ways made the outcome easier to bear.A bigger factor than a missed batting point, however, was defeats home and away to Warwickshire in the Conference phase of the season, which meant they carried forward only five points from those matches into the divisional stage, compared with Warwickshire’s 21 and Lancashire’s 16.5.For a side that had gone nearly three years without a Championship win before ending that run against Derbyshire in April, it has nevertheless been a satisfying four-day season, and it culminated this week with the coach, Peter Moores, signing a new three-year contract.Related

The delight of Notts’ captain, Steven Mullaney, was obvious. “We wanted to make Nottinghamshire love us again in four-day cricket and the messages we got on social media were that they were really proud of us whatever happened this week.”I think there were a few twitchy people when Pete was out of contact. It would have been so easy for him to throw the towel in when we didn’t win a game for three years. I’m made up that he has signed again.”Half-centuries from Ben Slater (79 not out) and Ben Duckett took them to victory after they resumed on 42 for 1, needing 132 more runs with the whole of the final day ahead of them. Duckett was aghast to drag on a front-foot cut against a wide long hop from Jordan Thompson and a flirtation with finishing the game before lunch led to Joe Clarke and Mullaney also falling before the interval. Slater, who was dropped by Tom Kohler-Cadmore at slip off Matt Fisher when 19, made good his escape. He finished top of the Nottinghamshire averages as a result. Luke Fletcher’s 66 wickets at 14.90 were unsurpassed in the country.Yorkshire, who suffered their first Championship defeat at Trent Bridge since 2008, at least took the match into a fourth day after being bowled out for 73 in their first innings and following on. They too were waiting on the result at Edgbaston, which would determine whether they or Somerset finished bottom of Division One after a season that saw them finish just a point behind winners Lancashire in their conference, despite winning only 18 batting points across both phases of the season, the joint-second lowest tally behind Derbyshire. With Headingley batting conditions generally blameless, that tells its own story.

A expulsão mudou o panorama do jogo.

PRESSÃO DO VOLTAÇO
O gol sofrido acordou o Volta Redonda novamente para a partida. O time carioca voltou a pressionar e tentar as triangulações próximas à área do Atlético-GO.

VOLTA REDONDA CRIA PERIGO

    WHAT MCELHENNEY SAID

McElhenney donned a Los Angeles Fire Department t-shirt, having been caught up in the recent wildfires in California, and told when delivering a post-match review: “I just want to say thank you for an incredible game tonight. 1-1, I’ll take that against Birmingham City, who is probably the best side we’ve played all season. Up the Town forever, hope to see you soon.”

He’s now worth £4m: Rangers must regret letting Ibrox star leave for £0

Over the years, Glasgow Rangers have made some questionable transfer decisions which have impacted things on the pitch.

The Ibrox side’s transfer activity ever since Steven Gerrard departed in 2021 has unearthed few gems, seeing the club spend lavish sums of money on players who either can’t hack it in Scotland or who are far too injury-prone.

£6m was spent on signing Brazilian forward Danilo, yet a knee injury sustained last year has seen the player fail to live up to this fee. He will get a chance once fit, but if the same issues persist, it will be a colossal waste of resources.

Sam Lammers is another one who cost a decent sum, yet failed to repay the fee on the field, scoring just twice for the Light Blues in 31 appearances before being shipped off to FC Twente this summer.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Gers have moved on several players in recent years far too soon, especially when they may still have contributed.

One notable example is Alfredo Morelos, who departed the club in 2023 for nothing after letting his contract run down. The Colombian scored over 100 goals during his six-year stint in Scotland. While he was a shadow of his former self during his final season, he still offered glimpses of his immense talent.

That summer, another first-team star left the club too, as Ryan Kent failed to renew his contract at Ibrox as well.

Michael Beale was keen on ushering in a new era at the Gers, but losing two players who had contributed plenty to the club’s success over the previous few years was seen as a big gamble. One that didn’t pay off.

Ryan Kent’s statistics at Rangers

The youngster first arrived in Glasgow during the summer of 2018 as Gerrard used his Liverpool connections to bring the winger to the club on a season-long loan deal.

During that spell, Kent registered 15 goal contributions – six goals and nine assists – in all competitions for the Light Blues. Despite the club failing to win a trophy, it was clear progress was being made on the pitch, as Gerrard was building a team that would soon take back the Premiership title from Celtic.

In order to do this, however, he would need to sign hungry players who would want to establish themselves in this project. Kent was one who was earmarked to make a permanent move to Ibrox that summer, but the saga rolled on all the way until deadline day.

Before the end of the window, it was announced that the wide player had moved north for a fee in the region of £7.5m, a staggering sum for the winger, despite shining on loan.

Again, the Gers finished trophyless during the 2019/20 campaign, but it was the following season in which Kent finally lived up to this lavish fee, as the Glasgow side won their first league title in a decade.

The former Liverpool man played over 50 matches that term, scoring 13 goals while chipping in with 14 assists. Furthermore, he ranked second in the squad for shots per game (2.3) in the top flight, along with ranking third for big chances created (nine), third for key passes per game (1.8) and second for successful dribbles per game (1.9), underlining how vital he was going forward.

This season proved to be Kent’s best at Rangers, as the following two years saw his gradual decline into someone who clearly looked like he no longer wanted to play for the club.

Former Rangers winger Ryan Kent.

During his final two seasons, he managed to score just six times, a poor return for someone of his quality. It was perhaps no surprise to see him leave in 2023 following a muted campaign.

What Ryan Kent has done since leaving Rangers

During his time in Glasgow, teammate Leon Balogun dubbed the winger as a “wizard” during his time with the club, but since leaving, he has failed to nail down regular game time for Fenerbahçe and hasn’t exactly been capable of weaving much magic.

He joined the Turkish side a few weeks after saying goodbye to Ibrox last summer, but the move didn’t take long to turn sour. Across the entirety of last season, Kent managed to make just 18 appearances in all competitions, finding the back of the net only once.

It wasn’t exactly the form he had envisioned upon joining the Turkish club, especially considering it looked like he needed a change and was clearly coming into the peak years of his career.

José Mourinho arrived in the summer to take charge of the club, who missed out on winning their first league title in nine years last term, but it soon became apparent that Kent wasn’t going to be in his plans.

The former Liverpool starlet has played just 68 minutes so far, and it looks like he could be on the lookout for a new club sooner rather than later.

Ryan Kent’s market value in 2024

Despite struggling in Turkey, the winger is currently valued at £4m by Football Transfers, indicating that he will make the club a profit should they decide to sell in January.

Following his struggles, might the Ibrox side rue letting him leave so easily? Considering how limited Philippe Clement’s options are out wide at the current moment in time, quite possibly.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, of course. Even if he did extend his deal, there was no guarantee that the winger would have returned to the form he showcased during the league title-winning campaign.

The move clearly benefited both parties at the time, but having a fit and enthusiastic Kent in the starting XI is something Clement would clearly love to have at his disposal, no doubt about that.

The Light Blues may have thought they hit the jackpot after his start to life at Ibrox.
