Shaun Tait appointed Afghanistan's bowling coach

His first assignment will be the bilateral ODIs against Pakistan next month followed by the T20 World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Aug-2021Former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait has been appointed Afghanistan’s bowling coach with immediate effect for a period of five months. He will be working alongside head coach Lance Klusener.Tait’s first assignment will be a three-match ODI series against Pakistan, set to be played between September 1 and 5 in Sri Lanka. That will be followed by the T20 World Cup in the UAE, for which Afghanistan are in Group 2 along with India, Pakistan, New Zealand and two qualifying teams. Afghanistan are also set to play a one-off Test in Australia, starting November 27 in Hobart.”There have been talks for a few months now about me possibly taking up the role,” Tait told ESPNcricinfo. “It eventuated because head coach Lance Klusener wanted someone else to oversee the bowling side specifically.”Afghanistan rely heavily on their spin troika of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to win them games in white-ball cricket. Tait said he wanted fast bowlers to play a bigger role as well.”Everyone talks about Afghanistan’s spinners, so one of the specifics of my role is to get people talking more about their fast bowlers. There is some improvement to be done and hopefully, I can add that side of things. With all the concentration on the spin, a couple of guys get picked to do the role at the death and they’re gonna need some guidance. That’s where I come in.”There are some exciting guys like Naveen-u-Haq, who has clearly shown that, certainly at the death with his change-up deliveries… He is obviously not gonna be the only Afghanistan fast bowler who can do it. If someone like Naveen is doing well in the CPL and over here in the UK in the Blast, that means there’s a future there for fast bowling. So I am looking forward to getting in there, working with guys like him, all the other fast bowlers, and including the spinners and learning more about the spin side.”Tait, who lives in London with his family now, won’t be moving to Kabul though but he “will be travelling wherever the team goes. And obviously the big one is the T20 World Cup and I am looking forward to being a big part of that.”Tait, 38, is a level-two certified coach from Cricket Australia and has worked as a bowling coach with Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League and Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 league.Tait , who was one of the quickest bowlers in the world, retired from all cricket in 2017. He played three Tests, 35 ODIs and 21 T20Is for Australia, picking up 95 wickets in all. In the 2007 ODI World Cup, which Australia won, Tait was the joint second-highest wicket-taker with 23 scalps.

Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock score hundreds to set up commanding win

Simi Singh made a ton of his own to ensure Ireland went down fighting

A dominant South African batting performance allowed them to square the series with Ireland and deny the hosts a first series win over a top-eight ranked team. South Africa were much improved from three days ago, when they lost to Ireland for the first time, and appeared rejuvenated by the return of Quinton de Kock, who was rested for the first two matches, and their new opening combination.Little, Adair and Tector pick up demerit points

Ireland fast bowler Josh Little has been fined 15% of his match fee and earned a demerit point for breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”
After fielding a ball in his follow-through in the 11th over of South Africa’s innings, Little brushed the batter Quinton de Kock with his shoulder while walking back to his bowling mark. This was the second demerit point picked up by Little in the last 24 months.

Janneman Malan partnered de Kock at the top and both brought up centuries. Malan’s 177* was the second in his seven-match career and his highest score, while de Kock’s was his 16th and first since February last year. The pair shared in South Africa’s fifth-highest opening stand, first opening stand over 200 since the year 2000, and first century opening stand since the 2019 World Cup. They asked Ireland to pull off their highest successful chase to win the series and despite Simi Singh’s fighting maiden century at No.8, they fell well short. In good batting conditions, de Kock and Malan were severe on the Irish attack, particularly Mark Adair, whose line was often too wide, and Andy McBrine and George Dockrell, who conceded 102 runs between them in just 13 overs. Both batters put on perfect displays of power-hitting, with boundaries all around the small ground. The onslaught began in the second over when Malan flayed Adair through point and then whipped a full delivery through mid-on. De Kock was not far behind with back-to-back off-side drives off Craig Young. Ireland had a half-chance to dismiss de Kock in the next over, on 12, when he drove Adair in the air in the direction of Curtis Campher in the covers. Campher dived to his right and got a hand to the ball but could not hold on to a tough chance.Left-armer Josh Little, introduced in the ninth over, drew the edge from Malan with his first ball but it went through the vacant second slip area for four. South Africa finished the first powerplay on 58 without loss with a platform to accelerate. The first six of the innings came in the 12th over when Malan stepped forward to launch Adair over mid-on. He would clear the boundary five more times, four times over the on side and once, in the final over, over extra-cover.Quinton de Kock brought up his hundred off 83 balls•Sportsfile via Getty Images

Ireland pulled things back slightly between the 14th and 18th over when they did not concede any boundaries. In that time, Malan brought up his fifty, off 66 balls, De Kock’s milestone took fewer balls, 43, and came when he hit McBrine over the covers for four.De Kock overtook Malan and brought up his hundred first with a push to long-on off Dockrell, off the 83rd ball he faced, and Dockrell’s punishment did not end there. In the next over, de Kock took 16 runs off his first three balls and Malan reached his century off the fifth ball to leave Dockrell with figures of 0 for 36 from three overs.Ireland had some respite in the 37th over when de Kock pulled Simi Singh into the hands of Adair on the square leg boundary. South Africa promoted Rassie van der Dussen to No.3, ahead of captain Temba Bavuma, and he did not take too long to get his eye in. He reverse-swept the fourth ball he faced for four, but let Malan continue as the aggressor.Malan started the final powerplay by hitting Singh for a six over long-on and edging him for four to third man. He reached his highest ODI score with another edge, between the wicketkeeper and short third man, and then brought up 150 by stepping to the leg side and driving Young back over his head. Though none of South Africa’s finishing options came off, Malan batted to the end and ensured they scored 100 runs in the last 10 overs to post a daunting total.Simi Singh walked in at 92 for 6 and proceeded to score a superb hundred•Sportsfile via Getty Images

Ireland’s reply was dented early when Keshav Maharaj, who opened the bowling, had Paul Stirling caught at slip, pushing at a ball that drifted into him and then turned away sharply. This was Stirling’s third cheap dismissal in the series after he made 13 and 27 in the previous two matches. Two overs later, Maharaj removed Andy Balbirnie, who looked to drive him and edged once more to Malan at slip. Balbirnie had not scored less than 50 in any of his three meetings with South Africa before this. Two overs after that, Lizaad Williams became the third South African to take a wicket with his first ball in ODIs. He pitched it short of a length, and McBride hung his bat out, edged and was caught behind. Ireland were 27 for 3 in the eighth over and could not really recover from there.Campher, batting for the first time against the country of his birth, and Singh put on 104-run for the seventh wicket and both scored half-centuries to lend some respectability to Ireland’s cause but it was never going to be enough. Campher skied a delivery to the leg side where Malan took the catch to give Andile Phehlukwayo a third wicket, and his most convincing return of the series. Ireland lost three wickets for 33 before Craig Young partnered Singh to see him to his century. It came off 91 balls, in the 47th over, and was decorated with 14 boundaries in a show of defiance against a South African attack that lost its shape as the inevitable drew closer.South Africa bowled Ireland out with 2.5 overs to spare and gained much-needed points on the World Cup Super League table. They now have two wins in the competition and are in 10th place. Ireland, who took 15 points from this series, remain fifth.

Neymar has managed just seven appearances since signing for Al-Hilal from PSG for an eye-watering €90 million (£77.2m/$98.3m) in 2023. The Brazilian has been plagued by injuries and is expected to move on at the end of the season when his contract expires. According to AS, Al-Hilal have acknowledged it was a "mistake" to buy the Brazilian and want Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah to take over from Neymar as the club's new superstar.

Salah is into the last few months of his Liverpool contract and has claimed there has been "no progress" in discussions about his future. The Egyptian superstar has been wanted in Saudi Arabia for some time and his current situation will create optimism he can finally be tempted to the Middle East. Meanwhile, Neymar has talked up a move to Inter Miami, where he would be reunited with former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.

Salah has 18 goals and 13 assists in 19 Premier League games this season. It's the most goal involvements by a player in their first 19 appearances of a campaign in the competition ever, overtaking the record previously set by Luis Suarez in 2013-14.

Liverpool fans will be eagerly awaiting news of Salah's future as the 32-year-old continues to spearhead the Reds' bid for trophies this season. Arne Slot's side are in action next when they take on Tottenham in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie on Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta personally wants Arsenal to sign "amazing" £42m ace in January

Amid recent injuries threatening to expose his side’s squad depth, Mikel Arteta now reportedly wants Arsenal to sign another versatile defender in the January transfer window.

Arsenal transfer news

Whilst the Gunners had no reason to panic in the summer transfer window, recent injuries to Martin Odegaard and Riccardo Calafiori have begged the question as to whether they should have brought in further reinforcements. Of course, any concerns were eased by their resilient 1-0 victory in the North London derby over Tottenham Hotspur, but that doesn’t mean the January window isn’t one to watch.

If those in North London want to compete on all fronts, then a January boost will undoubtedly help. After all, Arteta’s side are up against the winning machine that is Pep Guardiola’s winning machine, who they face this Sunday.

In the biggest match across the Premier League campaign so far, Arsenal could gain a crucial edge over the champions in pursuit of making it a third time lucky in their challenge to dethrone City. There’s still a long way to go no matter what though, and January could make all the difference.

Neville tore into £150k-p/w Arsenal star on debut, now he's undroppable

The talented “warrior” has since developed into a mainstay.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Sep 18, 2024

According to reports relayed by Football 365, Arteta now personally wants Arsenal to sign Jules Kounde from Barcelona in January, with the Spaniard of the belief that the Frenchman would be the final piece to unlocking a side capable of competing on all fronts.

What’s more, Arsenal are reportedly prepared to bid as much as €50m (£42m) to test Barcelona’s resolve in the winter window. Kounde, who can play both right-back and centre-back to match the trend of Arsenal defenders, is still only 25 years old and would offer Arteta the ultimate depth within his backline.

With another defender potentially on his way, perhaps Arteta is aiming to prove that attack wins you games and defence wins you titles to finally dethrone Manchester City.

"Amazing" Kounde would be upgrade on White

As impressive as Ben White has been since arriving in 2021, Kounde would give Arteta plenty to think about down that right-hand side and potentially leave White without a place. The Frenchman impressed at Euro 2024 and even earned the praise of former manager Xavi at Barcelona last season.

jules-kounde-barcelona-newcastle-transfer-opinion-premier-league

The Spaniard said via Barca Blaugranes after Kounde did exceptionally well up against Kylian Mbappe: “He was one of the transfers that I asked for. He’s one of the best defenders in the world right now. Stopping Mbappé was a collective effort. Kounde did amazing against Mbappé but Lamine [Yamal] also helped him a lot.”

The battle between the right-backs would certainly be one to watch if Arsenal did make their move for Kounde in January and that competition would be no bad thing. Likely pushing White on even further, Arteta’s side would only benefit from having two players of such high quality down the right-hand side.

Not just Rodriguez: West Ham must axe 4/10 dud who makes "a mistake a game"

West Ham United need to improve. Julen Lopetegui has not so much started as stuttered into gear as the club’s head coach, having been thrashed at the London Stadium by Chelsea on Saturday.

It’s now three defeats from three home matches in the Premier League. After being backed with over £120m in transfer spending this summer, the Spanish tactician, David Moyes’ successor, is already under pressure.

It’s clear he needs to shuffle the pack, and after bringing him off before half-time against Chelsea, it’s clear that Guido Rodriguez should be dropped – with Anfield waiting on Wednesday.

Guido Rodriguez's poor afternoon vs Chelsea

West Ham signed Rodriguez this summer after his contract with Real Betis expired. It was a shrewd move to bring in a defence-focused midfielder who would add some strength and solidity to the engine room.

He’s started all five of West Ham’s Premier League matches this season, but he was withdrawn after only 38 minutes, replaced by the industrious Tomas Soucek.

GIVEMESPORT branded the Argentine with a 2/10 match score, writing: ‘Couldn’t live with the Chelsea midfield in the opening half an hour as the game ran away from the Hammers. Was pulled off in the 38th minute by Lopetegui for a more dominant and physical player in Soucek.’

The game passed him by. The 30-year-old has looked decent since joining West Ham but was overwhelmed by Chelsea’s slick attacking play – with Liverpool up next, his deployment at the centre of the field would send a frisson of fear lancing through the Irons faithful for sure.

That said, he’s not the only man who deserves pulling from the starting XI.

Why it's time to drop Konstantinos Mavropanos

Mavropanos has been a regular feature under Lopetegui this season, but he’s not proving he is the man to partner Max Kilman in West Ham’s central defence.

Konstantinos Mavropanos and Michail Antonio

The most annoying part is that there is a player in there. In the Premier League this season, Mavropanos has won a whopping 77% of his duels. To contextualise this, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has won 65%, whereas Arsenal superstar William Saliba has succeeded with 71% of his duels.

This is a measure of the Greek defender’s natural defensive quality, but when he’s making “a mistake a game”, as was said by reporter Jacob Steinberg, it’s hard to justify his persistent inclusion in the starting line-up. Especially when flicking back to the summer’s spending spree.

Indeed, Jean-Clair Todibo signed for West Ham from OGC Nice on loan, with the option to buy for £35m. So far, the Frenchman has played only seven minutes in the Premier League (sitting as an unused substitute across the past three outings) and lasted until half-time against Bournemouth in the second round of the Carabao Cup, hooked after struggling to impose himself.

Against the Cherries, he was booked, dribbled past twice and succeeded with just one of his four attempted duels, as per Sofascore, but it’s understandable that he struggled on his first test. It happens. What’s less logical is Lopetegui’s reluctance to unleash him since – the Hammers haven’t exactly been iron at the rear.

With Liverpool (in the Carabao Cup) and Brentford coming up this week, Lopetegui would be wise to enforce change and move Mavropanos to the bench. GIVEMESPORT branded him with a 4/10 match rating after the Chelsea horrorshow: all three Blues goals were served down his flank.

They wrote: ‘It was an extremely tough afternoon for those at the back. Mavrapanos and Kilman couldn’t get hold of Jackson and the midfield runners all game. The Greek defender tried his best and got some blocks in, but ultimately wasn’t good enough.’

Konstantinos Mavropanos in action for West Ham.

Something needs to change and fast. The likes of Rodriguez and Mavropanos must be axed for the fixtures ahead, lest West Ham’s poor start sour into something more ruinous.

Jadon Sancho reveals Enzo Maresca's frustrated team-talk after Chelsea's draw at Crystal Palace – with Blues' Premier League title hopes in tatters after horror run

The Blues conceded an 82nd-minute equaliser to Jean-Philippe Mateta in Saturday's 1-1 draw and lost pace in the title race. Chelsea had gone ahead courtesy of Cole Palmer but were unable to add to the opener and blew the opportunity of taking three points. The Blues have now dropped five points across successive games to Ipswich and Palace and all but dropped out of the title hunt – much to Maresca's frustration.

    WHAT SANCHO SAID

Revealing Maresca's frustration to , Sancho said: "I thought we played quite well and controlled a lot of the game so it was very frustrating to concede late on. As the manager just said in the dressing room, we just have to kill off the game in the second half.

"I think if we got the second goal, we would have been more relaxed and they would have come out more and that would have created more space in behind for us. That didn't happen unfortunately so we just have to learn from it and move on."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea are now nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand, and appear to be out of contention for the title. The Blues emerged as surprise contenders early in the season but have faded with a string of mixed results over the Christmas period. The Blues still have a rather inexperienced side and are under a new head coach so a title challenge this season was unlikely to be sustained and they will already have an eye on competing next season.

£10m fee: Crystal Palace working on January deal to sign 48-goal forward

Crystal Palace appear to be working on having everything in place to sign a £10m player before the January window opens.

Crystal Palace’s summer signings

The Eagles were busy in the final weeks of the summer transfer window, bringing in a total of eight new players ahead of Oliver Glasner’s first full season in charge at Selhurst Park.

The most eye-catching deal from a financial point was landing striker Eddie Nketiah, who scored his first Crystal Palace goal in the week against QPR in the Carabao Cup.

However, in the Premier League, things haven’t exactly been going to plan for Glasner’s side, who remain without a win after four top-flight fixtures. Talking after the recent 2-2 draw with Leicester City, Glasner remained relaxed, saying:

“It was OK. Many parts of the game are OK. It’s a draw, so it’s our job that we play better, that we are more consistent in defence, that we concede fewer goals, and then we will get the win and I will be really happy.

“We have to invest to create chances and score goals, and sometimes how easily we gave them their goals. That says there’s a discrepancy, and this is what we all feel.

“But this comeback quality, this great impact from the subs, shows that we have a great group again and we will work hard to go from OK football to good football and then to excellent football.”

Before we know it, January will be upon us, allowing the Eagles to add to their ranks further. In recent days, Palace, and by extension chairman Steve Parish, have been linked with signing Real Sociedad forward Sheraldo Becker, claiming a move was being readied. Now, an exciting new update has been shared.

Crystal Palace transfer latest – Sheraldo Becker

According to reports in Spain, relayed by Sport Witness, Crystal Palace now want to get ‘everything sealed’ on the transfer for Becker before the January market opens, so he can move to England at the beginning of the window.

The Eagles are ‘trying to close’ a deal with Real Sociedad and will reportedly pay £10m, with the La Liga side not putting any obstacles in the way.

In fact, Sociedad appear to be keen on selling Becker, as they will make a healthy profit after signing him for €3m in January. The 29-year-old, who is a Suriname international, has scored 48 goals during his career, turning out for the likes of Union Berlin, ADO Den Haag and PEC Zwolle prior to joining Sociedad.

Now, his next move could be to Selhurst Park, providing Glasner with another option out wide and through the middle.

Wolves senior player now wants to leave after barely playing this season

A European side are looking into signing a senior Wolverhampton Wanderers player in the January transfer window, according to a new report, and he wants to go.

The Midlands side have just come off the back of an extremely busy and frustrating transfer window, as Gary O’Neil hopes he now has enough to tackle the first six months of the Premier League campaign.

As well as improving the squad, Wolves were unable to get through the transfer window without losing key players, as they saw Pedro Neto and Max Kilman leave Molineaux for big money to Premier League rivals.

While losing these two players, the window could have got better for Wolves were they able to complete a couple of transfers. One player the Premier League side had their eye on was Sassuolo winger Armand Lauriente, with Wolves making an offer for the player.

The attacker enjoyed a successful 2023/24 season with the Italian side despite them being relegated, and those in the Midlands were keen to bring him to Molineux. However, a deal was unable to get over the line before the window slammed shut.

Another player Wolves had their eye on was West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd, as they were interested in a deal before the window closed. The defender fell out of favour with the Hammers, and Wolves were reportedly interested, but he joined Real Sociedad on loan.

The transfer window is now closed for the English teams, but it has emerged that a Wolves player is already being eyed by a European side ahead of the January transfer window.

Wolves player wants to leave and could be sold for pennies

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla, relayed by Sport Witness, La Liga side Sevilla are weighing up a move for Wolves forward Pablo Sarabia, with the player keen to leave the Premier League side.

The report states that Sarabia is not considered a key player for Wolves, and that has given Sevilla hope of landing the player in January, as he also “wants to return to Spain." The 32-year-old has played for the Spanish side before, and they are interested in re-signing him, as they believe he would bring goals and creativity, something they state they are missing now.

Sevilla consider this potential transfer to be a “low-cost operation” given the fact that he is now 32, and he is in the final year of his contract with the Premier League side, meaning by January Wolves would have little negotiating power, especially with the player's stance.

Sarabia joined Wolves in January 2023 from PSG, and since joining the club, he has played 52 times in all competitions, scoring five goals and recording 10 assists. The Spaniard has featured three times for Wolves this season, twice in the league and once in the EFL Cup, but only playing a total of 90 minutes of football spread across the three games.
