Pakistan to visit South Africa in April for ODIs, T20Is

All matches to be played on the Highveld, games will be split between the Wanderers and SuperSport Park

Cricket South Africa has confirmed it will host Pakistan for three ODIs and four T20Is between April 2 and 16, with all matches to be played on the Highveld. The games will be split between the Wanderers in Johannesburg and SuperSport Park in Centurion, and will mark the end of a lean South African summer. Sri Lanka and England have been the only other touring teams for short two-Test and white-ball series respectively, after Australia indefinitely postponed a three-Test series that was scheduled for March.Pakistan, who South Africa are visiting at the moment, will arrive in South Africa on March 26 and will enter a biosecure environment, most likely to be the Irene Country Club, where Sri Lanka also stayed. They were initially only due to play three T20s but CSA asked the PCB to add a fixture in order to provide more content for the hosts. The ODIs will include a Pink Day match at the Wanderers, where funds will be raised for breast-cancer treatment. The full schedule

April 1, 1st ODI, SuperSport Park

April 4, 2nd ODI, Wanderers

April 7, 3rd ODI, SuperSport Park

April 10, 1st T20I, Wanderers

April 12, 2nd T20I, Wanderers

April 14, 3rd T20I, SuperSport Park

April 16, 4th T20I, SuperSport Park

“We are grateful to the PCB for agreeing to our request within a short period of time to increase the length of the trip by adding in a fourth T20, which will give us some much-needed additional international content,” Graeme Smith, South Africa’s director of cricket, said. “Pakistan has proved their status over the years as one of the most dangerous limited-overs teams and I’m sure they will give the Proteas a stern test on the Highveld. We will also have the much-anticipated Pink ODI take place during the tour and that is something further to look forward to for the players, the fans and all those associated with this iconic day.”That still leaves South Africa without international cricket from the end of the current trip to Pakistan, which finishes with two T20s at the weekend, to the end of March – a prime summer window. The national players will return home to play in a domestic T20 cup with only four-day cricket on the agenda for March. It remains to be seen how much – if any part – of this tour clashes with the IPL, which is likely to start mid April, and how that will affect player availability for either South Africa or the IPL franchises.

More could still be on the way before the August 30 deadline, though, with Monchi seemingly working hard behind the scenes on potential further signings. Villa have been using the lure of Champions League football to persuade players to move to the Midlands, and recent reports have claimed that a bid has been made for AS Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante.

That offer is thought to be worth around £17m plus bonuses, whereas players in the Premier League are also of interest. Villa have been credited with an interest in Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, with reports even claiming a total agreement had been reached. Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez also has admirers at Villa Park and could be on the way out of Anfield.

Crystal Palace striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta is another player of interest after scoring a hat-trick against Villa in a 5-0 win for the Eagles on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign. Another new signing is firmly on the cards, but this time at youth level.

Aston Villa set to sign Mason Cotcher from Sunderland

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed over the weekend that Aston Villa had sent a formal bid to Sunderland for teenage forward Mason Cothcer, who was already training with Villa’s youth side.

Now, according to The Telegraph, Cotcher is set to undergo an Aston Villa medical on Friday after the clubs agreed on a package for his services.

It is added that other formalities of a deal are set to be finalised over the weekend, but by the looks of things, the impressive teenage forward will soon be an official Aston Villa player, potentially progressing into Emery’s first team plans in years to come.

The 17-year-old scored nine goals and provided one assist in 27 games for Sunderland's U18 side, while also making appearances for Leeds United, Arsenal and Manchester United while looking for his next move, which is now set to be in the Midlands with Villa.

Fabrizio Romano: Aston Villa in contact to sign "dream" £60m star for Emery

Having already welcomed several fresh faces in a standout transfer window, Aston Villa are now reportedly in active contact to sign Unai Emery's "dream target" this summer.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have wasted no time before flexing their Champions League muscles for the first time, welcoming the likes of Samuel Iling-Junior, Jaden Philogene and, most recently, Amadou Onana this summer. The latter arrives to replace the departed Douglas Luiz, who swapped Villa Park for Juventus, in what could prove to be wise business from all involved in the Midlands.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 24, 2024

Onana expressed his delight after completing a summer switch from Everton, telling Villa's official website: “It’s a great stadium with a great atmosphere and the fans are amazing. I’ve played several times against the lads and I know how good they are. I’m ready to bring something to the team as well.

“I want to bring this football club to the top. They had a tremendous season last season. We’ve got to continue that vibe and try to compete at the top.”

If Onana wasn't impressive enough, then Villa's next potential name through the door may steal the headlines for all the right reasons. According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are in active contact to sign Joao Felix, who is a "dream target" for Emery this summer.

Although an "expensive package" for a player who once cost Atletico Madrid as much as a reported £113m, Villa have far from been afraid to splash the cash this summer and could yet do so once more.

"Versatile" Felix can ease responsibility on Watkins

Whilst Felix, thought to be now valued at up to £60m, is not an out-and-out goalscorer, his ability to drop deep in a more controlled role would take the creative responsibility away from Ollie Watkins to unleash the England international into an even greater goalscorer.

The current Villa star managed 19 goals and 13 assists in a stunning Premier League campaign last time out, but easing that burden of work off the ball with Champions League football to balance with domestic responsibilities could quickly prove to be the key.

Felix's ball recoveries instantly stand out as a trait that would benefit Emery's high-pressing side, making the praise of former Barcelona manager Xavi little surprise.

Joao Felix for Barcelona.

Xavi said via 90Min last season: "I see him both as a striker and on the left wing, and also the right. I liked Joao Felix. He has helped. I'd highlight his attitude, which is very important for the team. He is comfortable going from the wing to the inside. He can play as a 9, on the right, but he is less comfortable there. He is versatile, he will give us alternatives and will help us a lot."

Virat Kohli to join RCB camp in Chennai on April 1

Virat Kohli will join the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad on April 1, two days after the team begins their training camp in Chennai. The Royal Challengers will play their initial set of matches, including the IPL tournament opener on April 9 against defending champions Mumbai Indians, in the city.It is understood that Kohli would need to undergo the mandatory week-long quarantine put in place by the IPL as part the guidelines to operate in the bio-secure environment. On Monday, Kohli quit the bubble in Pune after India’s ODI series against England, which got over on Sunday.Kohli has been part of bio-secure bubbles since the end of January, ahead of the England series, and has been part of each of the four Tests, five T20Is and three ODIs. Now, he will be part of his IPL franchise set-up within two days of India finishing their international home assignments. The schedule continues to be relentless post the IPL, too, as India will enter a bubble soon after ahead of their departure to England in June for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. That would be followed by a five-Test series in England. India are then scheduled to return home to prepare for the T20 World Cup, to be played in October-November at home.On Sunday, soon after winning the ODI series in Pune, Kohli underlined the need for administrators to look at the scheduling, keeping in consideration player movements from one bubble to another in a challenging environment because of the Covid-19 pandemic.”Scheduling needs to be looked at in future, because playing in bubbles for so long, two to three months, is going to be very, very difficult going forward,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation. “You can’t expect everyone to be at the same level of mental strength.”Sometimes you do get cooked and you do feel like a bit of a change. I am sure things will be discussed and things will change in the future as well. But a different tournament, it brings fresh challenges heading into the IPL.”Meanwhile, the pair of Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohammed Siraj, who flew to Chennai from Pune on Monday afternoon, would be available to training from Tuesday. The IPL guidelines allow players travelling between bubbles to skip the quarantine and start training.A healthy proportion of the Royal Challengers, who finished fourth in IPL 2020, reached Chennai last week. This group included the team director Mike Hesson, Sanjay Bangar, (appointed as assistant coach from this season), along with fast bowler Navdeep Saini. Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, too, reached Chennai over the weekend.

Isak has been a huge hit at Newcastle since signing from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for a club-record fee. The Sweden international's performances have seen him linked with Arsenal already as the forward is yet to commit to a long-term contract at St James' Park. Isak's existing deal runs until 2028 and talks over a new contract are continuing. According to, Arsenal are "monitoring the situation" and the striker is on the club's list of options to strengthen the squad.

Arsenal do appear to be lacking a clinical finisher and have been linked with several other forwards such as Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres – who happens to be Isak's Sweden team-mate – and RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko. Isak also appears to be in the frame and could possibly be tempted away from St James' Park, particularly if Eddie Howe's side miss out on a top-four finish again this season.

WHAT ISAK SAID

Isak was fairly coy when speaking about his future over the international break. He told Fotbal Skanalen: “Throughout my career, I have never talked about or really commented on the move rumours during the season. There have been many such years where it has been talked about. It doesn’t affect me. The only thing I can say is that a lot of information and rumours often come out. Much of what I read is not true. So that’s about all I can say about the whole thing.”

However, after the international break De Zerbi seems to have changed his mind. The former Brighton manager brushed aside any exit talks and vowed to turn things around at Marseille amid a dismal form that has seen them win just once in five matches.

De Zerbi even drew comparisons to his time at Shakhtar Donetsk, where he coached during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 to express his firm resolve to continue at Marseille.

"Me, the players and the club in general, do not accept the match against Auxerre," he told reporters. "On the pitch, it was not enough. I did not use strong words. I just assumed my responsibilities. We played five matches at the Velodrome: one victory, two draws and two defeats. I assume my own responsibilities. If you think that I am going to resign, that it is my idea, I really want to emphasise that I am not running away. I am staying here, I did not run away from Shakhtar even when Putin launched bombings in Kyiv. I believe in this Marseille team, in the players that I train. I am not going anywhere else."

Everton swap deal to get rid of Beto for "lethal" forward may take off soon

Now in the final few weeks of the summer transfer window, Everton could reportedly be offered the chance to sign a 2023 target in a swap deal for struggling forward Beto.

Everton transfer news

It's been a mixed summer at Goodison Park – perhaps even one some will deem a success in the circumstances – but the transfer window is far from over. The future of Jarrad Branthwaite could still change and the Toffees may yet add further reinforcements, despite their ongoing ownership issues. So far, the Merseyside club have welcomed Iliman Ndiaye, Tim Iroegbunam, Jesper Lindstrom and, most recently, Jake O'Brien.

The young central defender expressed his delight after completing a move to Goodison Park, telling Everton's official website: “I’m buzzing and so happy to have signed for Everton. I've been dreaming of this kind of move in the Premier League, with such a historic club. It's a very exciting move for me.

“Everton is a huge club with a lot of history behind it and there's a big future as well. When the transfer window opened there were other clubs in for me but there was only one club I wanted to go to – it was Everton. They’ve shown the faith in me so now it's my turn to show why on the pitch.”

Agent talks: Everton want "magnificent" CB who'd be perfect for Branthwaite

He is available on a free transfer

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 6, 2024

Now, the Toffees could follow the arrival of a defender with the arrival of an attacking reinforcement. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, with talks open, Everton could be offered the chance to sign El Bilal Toure in a swap deal for Beto, as Atalanta look to replace Gianluca Scamacca following his ACL injury, in a swap deal which may soon "take off".

Toure, of course, was reportedly the subject of Everton's £34m bid last summer, before a move failed to materialise. A year on from that bid, they may finally get their man.

"Lethal" Toure's injury record is a concern

Given their lack of new owners, Everton are not in a position to get things wrong in the transfer market and signing a player who has had injury concerns in the last year or so represents a risk they may be better off avoiding.

UD Almeria striker El Bilal Toure.

Toure, though still just 22 years old, missed 32 games courtesy of a hamstring injury last season, 13 games for an unknown muscle injury in the season prior for UD Almeria, and 11 games in the 2021/22 campaign through another hamstring injury at Stade Reims. No matter how "lethal" the forward's finishing is, as described by Atalanta BC News, he can't prove that clinical nature when sidelined.

It's worth noting too, that Dominic Calvert-Lewin's own injury record is far from ideal, so sacrificing Beto in exchange for another unreliable option on the fitness front would be quite the risk from Everton at this stage.
