More turmoil at Borussia Dortmund! Club legend Mats Hummels departs after apparent 'violent' confrontation with Edin Terzic

Borussia Dortmund legend Mats Hummels has departed the club on a free transfer following an apparent confrontation with Edin Terzic.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Terzic himself left Dortmund on Thursday and he has now been followed out the door by the defender. It's been reported in Germany that the pair were involved in a heated confrontation ahead of the Champions League final, where BVB were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid at Wembley.

  • WHAT DORTMUND SAID

The club confirmed their second, high-profile exit in as many days on social media, writing: "Borussia Dortmund and Mats Hummels will part ways. The German defender has spent more than thirteen years at the club and left a significant mark having won two Bundesliga titles and DFB-Pokals with the club among numerous other achievements. We are grateful for the successful run we had together."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the lead up to the final, Hummels had been critical of Terzic's methods. "I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund shouldn't play like that – against any opponent in the world," he said last month. "I didn't think it could go on like this. I felt insulted in my honour to stand on the pitch in that kit. So submissive, so inferior in footballing terms. The two Stuttgart games and the away game in Leverkusen. That was barricading with 11 men in the box."

It's understood that these comments angered Terzic, with the duo having a fiery discussion just days before the showpiece event at Wembley.

It had been suggested that Hummels might sign a new contract if Terzic was relieved of his post. However, he will now be on the lookout for his next club. He should have no shortage of offers, having played a key role in Dortmund's Champions League campaign this season. Despite that, he was not included in Julian Nagelsmann's Germany squad for Euro 2024.

Moyes given transfer hope with 2022/2023 star striker keen to join West Ham

West Ham have been given some hope in their pursuit of a new striker as it is believed one forward is very keen to link up with David Moyes.

West Ham linked with new forward before deadline day

It's been a very busy last 48 hours in east London, with the club already sealing a deal to sign England international Kalvin Phillips on loan for the remainder of 2023/2024.

Talks opened as West Ham attempt third signing with Phillips and Osman

The Hammers are becoming very active in this latter stage of the window.

The 28-year-old joins on a temporary deal with the option to make it permanent this summer, and it has been reported elsewhere that West Ham will pay the entirety of Phillips' wages during his London Stadium spell.

As well as Phillips, widespread reports indicate they're also attempting to get FC Nordsjaelland winger Ibrahim Osman through the door before February 1.

The 19-year-old, who was a product of the 'Right to Dream' academy in Ghana, much like West Ham's own Mohammed Kudus, is now at the centre of West Ham interest and talks have advanced very quickly since the news broke on Tuesday evening.

Amid these developments, it is believed West Ham are still looking for a striker after failing to replace Gianluca Scamacca last summer.

The Italian departed for Atalanta in 2023, with Moyes having just the injured Michail Antonio and Danny Ings to choose from as natural options in his squad.

Star winger Jarrod Bowen has played in a makeshift role for much of the campaign, and while he has proven effective, the Englishman's recent injury exposed a glaring lack of depth up front in his absence.

The likes of Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface have even been linked recently, though it is unclear whether West Ham will have the funds to pull off such a coup after swoops for Phillips and Osman.

Moyes given Dia transfer boost

Another striker who may be more attainable is Salernitana forward Boulaye Dia. The Senegal international, who racked up 22 goal involvements for his club last term (16 goals, six assists), is said to be very keen on joining the Irons.

Indeed, as per Calcio Salernitana, Dia is hoping West Ham join the race to sign him in January as he dreams of a move to the Premier League. Salernitana also appear open to offers for the 27-year-old, giving Moyes' side a real opportunity to pounce.

While Dia hasn't replicated last season's heroic form, he's been called a "beast" and "absolute monster" by some members of the media, who rate him highly (Jonas Adnan Giæver).

Ratcliffe could beat Juventus to "sensational" Man Utd transfer target

Last summer, Manchester United paid up to £72m to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, making him their sixth-most-expensive addition of all time after Paul Pogba, Antony, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho.

Hojlund seemed to struggle at first to shoulder the pressure of that price tag, failing to score a Premier League goal until the 3-2 comeback win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day. That strike, however, appears to have ignited the Dane, who is enjoying a run of five in six heading into Sunday's reverse fixture against the Villans.

With the Hojlund deal looking better by the week, United are now exploring the possibility of doing further business with Atalanta. This week, it emerged that Erik ten Hag's side have made initial contact over a deal for midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, who's hoping to leave Bergamo this summer.

Juventus fear Man Utd in Koopmeiners race

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), United are the leading Premier League suitors for Koopmeiners. Juventus are also keen, but they recognise that the Red Devils, particularly after the fresh investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are able to overwhelm them financially. Atalanta are demanding around £51m to sell the Dutchman, and the "dangerous" United should be able to reach that figure.

Encouragingly for United, Atalanta are already looking at possible replacements and have identified Marco Brescianini at Frosinone as a possible target. Juventus are also looking at Brescianini as they draw up contingency plans in the event that they miss out on Koopmeiners to United.

"Sensational" Koopmeiners can address creativity issue

Although Koopmeiners has played most often as an attacking midfielder this season, he's also operated as a number eight and a number six, while going further back in his career, he's amassed 46 appearances at centre-back and even popped up on the right wing a couple of times, too. That remarkable level of versatility has led Sky Sports' Dougie Critchley to laud him as "sensational".

Even though he's been moved around the team, the 25-year-old has maintained an excellent level of production for a midfielder, netting seven times and providing four assists in 26 games in all competitions. While he's scored more than he's set up, the underlying numbers suggest that creativity is his biggest strength – Koopmeiners ranks inside the top seven in Serie A for expected assisted goals (3.9), shot-creating actions (81) and key passes (43).

United would appear to be in desperate need of another playmaker, with Bruno Fernandes (seven) and Marcus Rashford (five) the only players in the squad to notch more than two assists in all competitions this season. It's no surprise, then, that they're targeting a player of Koopmeiners' profile.

Elbow blow could hurt Matthew Wade Ashes selection chances

Nothing, it seemed, was capable of stopping Matthew Wade’s march to a place in Australia’s squad for the Ashes series against England next month. For even if selectors had doubts about Wade or other team balance preferences concerning the ODI vice-captain Alex Carey as a back-up for the Test captain Tim Paine, the sheer volume of runs he has been churning out in characteristic, punchy style have allowed little room for argument. However a serious blow to the right arm from the England Lions captain Lewis Gregory, very nearly on the point of the elbow, forced Wade to retire hurt and be sent for an X-ray on day three of a game in which the Australians have steadily taken control.Play was stopped for several minutes as Wade struggled in obvious pain, and though he played out a few more balls before tea, he did not re-emerge in the evening session. The blow left him with plenty of rehab work ahead to be swinging the bat freely in the crucial final warm-up match between the tourists’ 25 available players in Southampton.”Matthew went for a precautionary X-ray after taking a blow to his right elbow,” the team doctor John Orchard said. “The X-ray came back clear but he’s probably suffering from a bruised nerve from the impact and his grip strength is impaired. Matthew’ll be reassessed in the morning but it’s unlikely he’ll bat again in this innings. However we’re very hopeful he’ll recover in good time for the Australia-Australia A game next week.”Hits of this kind can have serious consequences even if they do not result in a fracture, of the kind suffered during the World Cup by Shaun Marsh. David Boon avoided a broken arm when struck similarly by Curtly Ambrose in Adelaide in 1993, but the effect of the injury on the remainder of the match was significant when recalling that Allan Border’s team would ultimately lose by one run, the tightest margin in all Test history.More recently, Ricky Ponting was hit in a similar region by Kemar Roach’s second ball to him in a Test in Perth in 2009. Though Ponting attempted to soldier on for another 40 minutes, the compacting effect of the blow – later described as being like a piece of meat being tenderised with a mallet – affected Ponting’s batting for much of the rest of the summer. For Wade, the injury will be another obstacle to join the many he has overcome to get this close to an international recall, a little less than two years after he played the last of his 22 Tests, against Bangladesh in Chittagong. In that sense, it was also a feather in Gregory’s cap, for he had delivered a bouncer both swift enough to have Wade ducking and skiddy enough to prevent him from avoiding it.The Lions were not without their own concerns – Jamie Porter leaving the field complaining of back spasms, though they had occurred while fielding, not bowling. There were otherwise a series of cameos from the Australians as they set about adding to a 130-run first innings lead, secured by rolling through the last five Lions wickets for 35 with the help of the second new ball. Chris Tremain nabbed four victims though he was more expensive than the watching selection chairman Trevor Hohns would have wanted; Jackson Bird (3 for 51 from 23 overs) and Jon Holland (2 for 56 from 28) kept things tighter.Joe Burns was again dismissed cheaply, this time via an outside edge, before Marcus Harris (50), Kurtis Patterson (38), Mitchell Marsh (26) and skipper Paine (38) gave themselves some time in the middle on a drying surface. Aside from Gregory, the most consistent threat was posed by Jack Leach, who turned some balls expansively on a sun-drenched afternoon.

Man Utd could sign Berrada’s next Haaland in "rapid" £42m star

The appointment of Omer Barrada at Manchester United is as exciting as any new signing.

That likely isn't hard for those at Old Trafford, however, with Erik ten Hag's men hardly getting many things right in the market since he arrived in English football.

Berrada arrives from Manchester City with a rich history of brokering some of the most impressive acquisitions in the Citizens' history.

He was the man to help bring Jack Grealish to the Etihad in a then-British record deal, the brain behind a deal for Rodri and let us not forget, Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian was never going to be a risky signing and after he led them to a famous treble last term, scoring 52 goals in 53 games, proved why he was worth every penny of a £51.2m move.

So, how could United repeat something similar? The answer is not very easily. But there is one star forward potentially on the market in the summer that has the potential to live up to similar heights.

No Hojlund, Pogba 2.0 signs: The dream XI Omar Berrada could build at Man Utd

Erik ten Hag could have a new-look United team next month.

ByTom Lever Jan 22, 2024 Berrada's number 1 striker for Man United

Rasmus Hojlund has finally found form over the last month following a mega £72m move to Old Trafford, scoring three goals in his last four appearances.

However, the fact is that United are in need of more potent threats if they are to find an extra level under Ten Hag.

One such option could well be RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko. Reports at the beginning of the January window stated that he may be an option for those in Manchester as the market plays out.

Journalist Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "There are people within the structure that still really like Sesko, and his availability would definitely turn a few heads around Old Trafford, so I can see that one being a little bit more tempting.

"But it does throw up the question of what it means for Hojlund, so it will be interesting to see whether Manchester United will go there again. My hunch is that they probably won't but, seeing as they were so hot on him before and thought they might come in for him again in a year or two, it might be interesting."

Benjamin Sesko

Jones' hunch was indeed right as United haven't made a move this month. Though, with reports in recent days suggesting Chelsea could come into the picture the Red Devils will no doubt be on red alert again. A move may cost in the region of £42m.

How Benjamin Sesko compares to Erling Haaland

So, why could Sesko be Berrada's next Haaland-like success? Well, the Slovenian forward has already been compared to the rampant Norwegian in his fledgling career.

Indeed, NextGen football once proclaimed his play style as one that boasts the "speed of Mbappe" and the "size of Haaland". That's a salivating prospect but the forward is, as he confessed, growing slightly tired of such comparisons.

Their play style is indeed similar but they also came through the ranks at RB Salzburg, where Sesko netted 18 in 41 last term. The 6 foot 4 powerhouse has lost an ounce of his prolific ability since moving to the Bundesliga, only scoring eight goals throughout 25 matches in 2023/24, but this is still a young 20-year-old there with the world at his feet.

Some might say that with an equally young Hojlund in their ranks, there is no such need for Sesko to join the fold. Those arguments do hold up but nonetheless United need another striker to share the burden of scoring goals.

Boasting "rapid speed" and "blessed with a swagger" in the words of analyst Ben Mattinson, it's evident to see why such comparisons have been made to Haaland. Though, statistically, where do similarities lie?

The budding Slovenia international is no doubt still incredibly raw but he has a truly unique profile that would suit Ten Hag's men perfectly. Interestingly, based on the stats he's also a more complete attacker, producing more carries and shot-creating actions while winning more aerial battles. Of course, scoring goals will be the true litmus but it's a good start.

Berrada will and should be cautious in his approach next summer but this is certainly a move the new CEO must be exploring.

Nottingham Forest star who lost 100% duels let Nuno down vs Villa

After claiming their first three points in 2024 against West Ham United last weekend, Nuno Espírito Santo's Nottingham Forest side fell to another Premier League defeat against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.

The Reds fell three goals behind just 39 minutes into the encounter, with defender Moussa Niakhate pulling a goal back right on the stroke of half-time.

It was evident that Nuno was unhappy with his side's performance, with the Reds boss making a triple substitution at half-time – a move that saw centre-halves Felipe and Murillo make way for Andrew Omobamidele and Harry Toffolo.

Despite another goal in the second period, the damage was already done by Unai Emery's side, with Leon Bailey putting the result beyond any doubt with over half an hour to play.

The display from Nuno's side was night and day of that at the City Ground last weekend, with the Reds being forced to pay for yet more individual errors.

Nottingham Forest stats against Aston Villa

Yesterday was the ninth time the Reds have conceded three or more goals in the Premier League so far this campaign – a tally only beaten by Burnley, who've managed the feat 11 times in 26 games.

In a common theme since promotion back to the Premier League, Forest had less possession than Villa, with the hosts having 58% of the ball, in comparison to the Reds' 42%. Counterattacks have become prominent in Forest's play, with the Reds winning 15 tackles – more than double than Villa, with Nuno's side able to quickly push up the pitch.

Forest were under pressure for large spells of the encounter, with the hosts having more corners, shots and big chances than the Reds – with Emery's side deserving of all three points at Villa Park.

Villa's first-half dominance was reflected in Nuno's triple change at the break, with one player in particular having an off day compared to his usual high standards.

Murillo's stats against Aston Villa

Murillo has impressed Forest fans since his summer arrival from Brazilian side Corinthians. However, yesterday was a day to forget for the 21-year-old as he was brought off by Nuno during the break.

During his 45-minute stint yesterday, the defender failed to win a single duel, whether that be ground or aerial – with Murillo also picking up a booking for his troubles.

The £30k-per-week Brazilian also failed to win a single tackle, with the former Corinthians defender being dribbled past twice, including for the opening goal scored by Ollie Watkins.

It certainly was an off day for Murillo, with his good performances so far at the City Ground catching the eye of many – with his potential there for everyone to see.

He could easily break Brennan Johnson's record departure from Forest in years to come, but he needs to remain consistent if he is to keep progressing at the club.

The Forest faithful will be hoping he can rectify his previous displays on Wednesday night as the Reds face Manchester United in the fifth round of the Carabao Cup at the City Ground.

Newcastle could make move to sign "strong" £13m player keen on PL transfer

Whilst Newcastle United failed to welcome a single reinforcement during the January transfer window, Eddie Howe can at least be boosted by the fact that the Magpies managed to avoid any major departures. And now, they could turn their attention back towards splashing the cash once more in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle transfer news

Although Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron, Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles were all linked with moves away during the winter window, Newcastle managed to keep hold of Howe's star men. There was a suggestion that Newcastle's reported £155m loss over the last three seasons could land them in Financial Fair Play trouble, but the lack of departures suggests that they're safe from Premier League sanctions for now.

Howe may not be so lucky to keep hold of his players this summer, however, with Joelinton's contract situation potentially proving to be an issue. The Brazilian is on course to leave the club as a free agent in the summer of 2025, meaning that any offers for his signature this summer could certainly be tempting for PIF.

Aware of the situation, Howe said (via Metro): "Eighteen months [left on a contract] is a vulnerable time for a club. The club will need to tie Joe down to a longer-term contract or there is a possibility he will be sold in the summer. That is just the reality of the situation."

With or without Joelinton, the Magpies could welcome a midfield reinforcement this summer. According to SportBild (via TEAMtalk), Newcastle could make their move for Anton Stach this summer ahead of Fulham and West Ham United.

The Hoffenheim midfielder is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League and is valued at just €15m (£13m). The Magpies are long-term admirers of Stach, so it would be rather fitting if the midfielder replaced Joelinton, who also swapped Hoffenheim for St James' Park.

"Strong" Stach can replace Joelinton

If Newcastle are forced to replace Joelinton this summer, they should look no further than Stach. The Hoffenheim midfielder has enjoyed a gradual rise and is getting better and better in the Bundesliga, and now looks ready to step into the Premier League. Stach's stats show that he may even be an upgrade on the current Newcastle midfielder.

A well-rounded player, Hoffenheim managing director Alexander Rosen told the club's official website after welcoming Stach in January of last year: "We are very pleased that we have been able to attract another player who is on the fringes of the German senior side and helped the U21s win the Euros in 2021. Anton is a very variable midfielder who is strong both defensively and offensively and has many special skills.

"He has a strong physical presence, is a willing runner with a burst of pace and excels in duels. On top of all that, with his good passing, dynamic dribbling and excellent shooting technique, Anton is always able to make things happen in the final third. In short: he is a player who will help us in every phase of the game."
