  • Man Utd having dismal WSL season
  • Coach Skinner out of contract this summer
  • But report says INEOS have offered new deal
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United were title contenders in the 2022-23 campaign, reached a maiden Women's FA Cup final and qualified for the Women's Champions League for the first time, too. However, they've struggled to back that success up this year, sitting six points off the European places with four Women's Super League games remaining.

With several players out of contract this summer, none more high-profile than England No.1 Mary Earps, it has fans worried about who might opt to stay at the club and what the future looks like.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Supporters have not been afraid to show their discontent at how things have been going either, some even chanting 'Skinner out' at games this season. However, it appears that new part-owners INEOS, who have taken control of football operations at the club, are set to hand the 41-year-old a new contract, according to .

The report says that terms have not yet been agreed but that talks are ongoing and both parties are keen to come to an agreement, with Skinner's current deal set to expire at the end of this season.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite a poor season, United do at least have a chance at repeating their run to the FA Cup final after making it to the semi-finals of the competition. However, doing so will mean taking down Chelsea, the team that beat them in the showpiece event at Wembley last May.

That FA Cup clash is the Red Devils' next fixture and they will host the Blues at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

Spurs player "set for run of starts" with "big" Ange decision looming

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou will hand one player a "run of starts" amid the current injury crisis sweeping Spurs.

Van de Ven and Maddison out till New Year

Following their first defeat of the Premier League campaign at home to Chelsea early this week, ending what was an impressive early-season unbeaten run, Postecoglou also has numerous absentees to deal with. The Lilywhites take on Wolves at lunchtime today in what will be an interesting encounter, as they're set to be without numerous key players.

Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero miss out following their red cards against Chelsea, dealing a major blow to Postecoglou, with the Australian also set to be without both Micky van de Ven and James Maddison until the New Year.

The latter's injury is far worse than first feared and may have even suffered ankle ligament damage, according to reports, while van de Ven's hamstring injury will keep him out till around January as well.

"Fair to say there was a fair bit happening after Monday night," said Postecoglou on the latest Spurs team news.

"If I can go through them… Micky Van de Ven with a hamstring injury we knew was fairly significant. Probably a couple of months for him – looking into the new year.

"Madders, a lot worse than we thought. He came off with an ankle injury, but the next day wasn’t great so we sent him off for a scan. So again, not great for him and probably into the new year for him.

"Richy had the operation, which we’d kind of scheduled anyway because Richy has been battling with it from day one and we thought with the international break coming up we thought it would be a good time to get it done. He should only be a month if everything goes well so not too long after the international break.

"They’re the main ones, obviously we have a couple of suspensions as well. Davies is back and available. Porro’s fine, he's trained fine."

The aforementioned Maddison and van de Ven join Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon on the treatment table at Spurs. Indeed, Postecoglou appears to have grown worryingly short of options, leading to some reports that Spurs could target Ben Godfrey in January, as well as Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Eric Dier "set for run of starts"

As a result of Postecoglou's lack of defensive depth, the Australian will now have to make do with a player he had previously outcasted.

Eric Dier.

Spurs defender Eric Dier hadn't played a single minute for Spurs before their clash with Chelsea, but TEAMtalk back that Dier is now "set for a run of starts" in an important role as Postecoglou's only fit natural centre-back option.

The Englishman was out of favour and linked with a move away, as his contract expires in 2024, but Postecoglou now has a "big decision" to make over who will partner him against Wolves this afternoon.

Angelo Mathews still hurt by ODI axing as he lets 'bat do the talking'

A week after coach Chandika Hathurusingha praised the progress Angelo Mathews had made on his fitness and attitude since being axed from the ODI team, Mathews has claimed that his preparation for the ongoing Tests, in which he has now hit three half-centuries in four innings, was no different than usual.Essentially, Mathews still appears to be indignant about being dropped following Sri Lanka’s exit at the Asia Cup. He had been particularly hurt at the time given that Hathurusingha, the very man who had asked him to resume the ODI captaincy at the start of the year, had also pushed for the stripping of that captaincy and his omission altogether.Upon reaching fifty on day four in Pallekele, Mathews pointed to his bat and made a yapping motion with his gloves – signalling that he was letting his “bat do the talking”. He had made the same gesture upon reaching fifty in the first innings in Galle as well, and was pointedly looking in the direction of the dressing room on both occasions. On Saturday, following his 88, Mathews was asked asked whether he was happy with his running between the wickets and fitness – the two reasons Hathurusingha had provided as justification for his omission. Mathews replied: “You tell me. That’s not something that I have told. But people are concerned, and they need to answer that question.”Hathurusingha had said after the loss in Galle that Mathews was now “making the effort to do things the way we expect”. But Mathews denied he had done anything different for this series.”I have done nothing extraordinary when it comes to preparation,” he said. “I have been training the same way for the past ten years. I must thank the high performance centre staff and all the coaches, and the physios and trainers and everyone for providing me all the facilities and looking after me well. I concentrated on what I need to do. I didn’t concentrate on other things. I prepared myself like I have always prepared. If I get the opportunity I want to score runs.”My job is to score runs and not worry about other things. Just focus on the game and move forward and not to worry about what other people are saying. If I am honest with myself and If I am doing the thing, that’s what matters.”Mathews had actually been Sri Lanka’s most consistent ODI batsman since the start of 2017, before he was dropped. Which is part of the reason why he had felt especially aggrieved. Despite having now spent over two weeks in the company of Hathurusingha, in the Test dressing room, he does not seem any less hurt.”My stats will speak on behalf of me,” Mathews said. “But they took a decision. I’m disappointed but I can’t control it.”

Prolific striker sold in summer of 2023Productive partnership in north London brokenProving difficult to land elusive silverwareWHAT HAPPENED?

Spurs reluctantly agreed to part with their all-time leading goalscorer in the summer of 2023. Having been unable to deliver the major silverware that Kane craves, the decision was taken to sanction a big-money deal with Bayern Munich.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

That agreement brought a productive on-field partnership between Kane and Son to a close – with the pair boasting a history-making haul of goal combinations in the Premier League, having snatched that record from Chelsea icons Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard.

WHAT SON SAID ABOUT KANE

Son is now leading from the front at Spurs, after taking the captain’s armband for 2023-24, and has told of no longer having a trusted ally by his side: “Me and H, we had something different. A connection together, nearly 10 years together. Playing in almost the same position, we knew where we are. We were demanding very, very much. It was a very special connection. It was a huge honour playing with him. For me, he's one of the best in the world. He left, which was really sad for me, but it was a good move for him. Now he's at Bayern scoring over 30 goals, and I hope he can score more goals.”

Kane is in danger of missing out of major honours again during his debut campaign at Bayern, despite hitting 39 goals on a personal level. The Champions League remains the final trophy up for grabs to them, while Spurs are in the process of trying to wrap up a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Aston Villa could land a dream Bailey heir in swoop for "in form" 5 ft 8 whiz

Aston Villa have enjoyed a terrific start to the 2023/24 campaign and are currently competing to secure a spot in the Champions League for next season.

The Villans are fifth in the Premier League table and they could move up and into the top four with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur, who they travel to play on Sunday.

Unai Emery has masterminded a sensational rise for the club since he replaced Steven Gerrard in the dugout last year, having led the side to Europa Conference League football after less than one full season in charge.

The Spanish tactician may now be looking to go one better and qualify for the Europa League or Champions League for the 2024/25 campaign, which they are currently on course to do.

Unai Emery

His work in the transfer market, alongside new sporting director Monchi, has helped Villa as the likes of Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby have hit the ground running in English football.

Diaby has produced three goals and three assists in 12 Premier League starts so far this season since his move from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer, and his form has kept Leon Bailey out of the starting XI for the majority of the campaign.

The Jamaica international, who has impressed when given the chance, has not been able to break into the side on a regular basis and his job could become harder if the club are able to land one of their reported targets – Jonathan Rowe.

Aston Villa transfer news – Jonathan Rowe

It was reported by TEAMtalk earlier this month that the Villans are one of a number of clubs interested in the exciting Norwich City winger ahead of the January transfer window.

Fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also said to be eyeing up the Championship starlet as a possible target to bolster their respective attacks ahead of the second half of the season.

The report did, however, state that the Canaries want to keep hold of their academy product and that they would also like to tie him down to a contract extension. His current deal at Carrow Road is due to expire in 2025 but they have an option to extend that by a further 12 months.

There was no mention of how much it would take to tempt the EFL side to cash in on the England U21 international, who may be looking to follow in Emiliano Buendia's footsteps in making the transition from Norfolk to the Midlands.

The arrival of another talented wide player could make it difficult for Bailey to find regular minutes, as Rowe could come in as the dream heir to his position in the squad as someone who could compete with Diaby for a starting spot whilst also getting minutes in domestic and European cup matches.

Leon Bailey's Villa statistics

Former Villa manager Dean Smith swooped to sign Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported fee of £25m and failed to hit the ground running after his move from the Bundesliga.

The left-footed forward arrived in England off the back of an impressive nine goals and eight assists across 30 league matches for the German side during the 2020/21 campaign.

His first Premier League season ended with a return of one goal and two assists in 18 outings for the Villans, who brought in Gerrard to replace Smith before the turn of the year.

Bailey's form improved the following term as he racked up four goals and four assists in 33 top-flight appearances throughout the 2022/23 campaign. However, the winger underperformed in front of goal with an xG (Expected Goals) of 5.34 and missed four 'big chances' to add to his four-goal haul.

This term, the 26-year-old wizard has already plundered three goals and three assists in ten Premier League matches and is on course to smash his tally from the previous season, despite only having an xG of 1.91 so far.

The talented attacker has also contributed with one goal and two assists in four Europa Conference League games, which shows that he can perform domestically and in Europe.

Bailey has stepped up and looks to be a useful squad option for Emery to call upon with his ability to be a scorer and a creator of goals for the side.

Jonathan Rowe's season in numbers

Rowe, however, could come in as a player with the potential to make an immediate impact on the pitch whilst also having time on his side to be a long-term prospect for the Villans if Monchi can orchestrate a deal for the gem.

He is six years younger than the current Villa forward and could, therefore, be his heir at the top end of the pitch, given his impressive form for Norwich so far this season.

Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.

England U21 manager Lee Carsley claimed that the 20-year-old magician is "in form" and his statistics for the Canaries under David Wagner back that claim up.

Rowe has racked up eight goals and two assists in 16 starts across all competitions for the Yellows, which includes seven goals and one assist, along with one penalty won, in the Championship.

He has also scored one goal in two matches for England, despite starting neither of those games, and this means that the young ace has 11 goal contributions in 16 starts for club and country this term.

The Norwich academy graduate, who produced one assist in 13 Premier League matches during the 2021/22 campaign, also caught the eye as a scorer at youth level.

Rowe plundered 12 goals in 31 U18 outings and 11 goals in 31 U21 clashes for the Canaries before he was able to establish himself as a regular first-team performer.

The 5 foot 8 magician is also a versatile attacker who is capable of being deployed in a multitude of roles. He has played in virtually every position across the attack but has played the majority of his games either off the left wing or down the middle as an attacking midfielder.

Emery could, therefore, utilise him as one of his two forwards or as one of the wider attacking midfielders in his current system, which is why he could be a dream addition for the club.

Monchi must now work to secure a deal for the EFL starlet as the talented whiz has showcased his potential to be an impressive goalscorer from an attacking midfield or wide position and could be a long-term heir to Bailey's, or even Diaby's, position in the squad.

Insiders "convinced" Spurs are preparing bid for "underrated" star

Insiders at a rival club are believed to be "convinced" that Tottenham are "lining up a bid" to sign one of their top transfer targets.

Lange at work behind the scenes

After arriving from Aston Villa on 1st November, new sporting director Johan Lange has officially got to work on identifying Spurs transfer targets for the winter window.

As now confirmed by manager Ange Postecoglou in a press conference on Friday (via football.london), plans are "well away" ahead of January and Lange is personally leading the charge for new Spurs signings.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

"I guess the challenge for us was they all came at once as it hasn't been staggered," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's injury problems, going on to share an update on their transfer plans.

"In terms of January, the planning is well away with that. Johan [Lange] has come in and he's leading that in terms of all the background work.

"My involvement and my own sort of ramp up to it as we get closer to January and understanding exactly what our requirements are at the moment, although work has been done in the background with Johan leading it and he's brought in some people to help him in that area. We'll work with him when the time is right."

The north Londoners were already linked to signing a new left-sided centre-back long before Lange, with Tottenham especially eager to bolster that area of the squad after Micky van de Ven's injury.

Spurs are targeting Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth as one example, while the agent of Genoa star Radu Dragusin revealed Tottenham talks over signing the defender this week.

“I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams," said Dragusin's representative Florin Manea to Fanatik.

"We are getting closer. I spoke with Newcastle, with Arsenal, with Tottenham. I also have the messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask."

Meanwhile, there have been murmurs of Spurs eyeing a new winger and, potentially, a striker to replace Harry Kane further down the line in 2024.

Club insiders expect Spurs bid for Toney

Brentford star Ivan Toney is one of the linked options, coming after he scored 20 goals in the Premier League alone last season.

According to The Sun, Chelsea insiders are "convinced" Spurs will move for Toney, though Postecoglou's side deny this themselves.

Ivan Toney

Indeed, the west Londoners have a real belief that Tottenham are "lining up a bid" for the 27-year-old, who is actually one of Chelsea's top targets to solve their own striker woes.

Stamford Bridge chiefs are apparently braced for a three-way battle for Toney's services, with Arsenal also among the contenders.

Keaton Jennings puts his body on the line once more at short leg

Bravery and anticipation to the fore as England reap the rewards of close attention to close catching

George Dobell in Colombo24-Nov-2018England were once again indebted to an outstanding display at short leg from Keaton Jennings as England battled back from adversity to dominate the second day in Colombo,For the third time in the space of two Sri Lanka innings, Jennings pulled off an outstanding catch at short leg (to be scrupulously correct, one of the catches in Kandy was taken by the keeper, Ben Foakes, after Jennings parried to ball to him) to conjure a wicket from pretty much nowhere. He was then back in the action three more times in the innings, combining with Adil Rashid just before tea to remove Dhananjaya de Silva for 73 and break a burgeoning second-wicket stand of 142, before accounting for Dimuth Karunaratne and Roshen Silva after the break, the latter an outstanding sharp one-handed pluck off the face of the bat.But for innovaton and sheer chutzpah, nothing else on the day compared to his interception take off Danushka Gunathilaka, as he came advancing down the pitch to the left-arm spin of Jack Leach. Skipping along sideways to ensure he stayed alongside the advancing batsman, Jennings spread his arms to make sure he covered as much space as possible and anticipated the possible direction of the ball.Sure enough, Gunathilaka was only able to get a thick inside edge on the ball which sent it slicing out towards the leg-side. Jennings, no more than two or three metres from the bat, was in position to take the ball on the body and, as he fell backwards to absorb the impact, ensure he was able to clutch on to it.Fortunate? Maybe a little. Certainly he had to fumble for the ball after it hit him in the midriff. But there’s no doubt it is exactly what Jennings intended to do. And he’s now done it – or similar – three times over the last Test and a half. There were several similarities with this dismissal and the two involving Jennings in Kandy. On each occasion, he had successfully anticipated the batsman’s movements and the ball’s possible direction of travel. In Kandy he moved to his left to block Dimuth Karunaratne’s full-blooded sweep (and subsequently parried the ball to Foakes), while he also clung on to a brilliant, if more orthodox, one-handed chance off the inside edge of Dhananjaya de Silva. That wicket of Karunaratne, in particular, was valuable as it came when the batsman was looking solid and England were struggling for a breakthrough. But the key to Jennings’ success in the position is bravery. He appears not to allow thoughts for his own safety to enter his head. So, rather than attempting to take evasive action when he sees the batsman shape for an attacking shot – which is instinctive, up to a point – he instead thinks only about the potential direction the ball will take and tries to put himself in its path. That means he stays low, he keeps his eyes on the batsman – he does not follow the ball’s trajectory as it’s delivered – and continues to look out for the ball off the bat.The traditional thinking behind fielding at short-leg was to make yourself into the smallest target possible: to curl up; to protect the head; to get out of the way as soon as your saw the batsman shaping for an aggressive shot. Jennings has gone exactly the opposite way with it. He has made himself as large a target as possible with nothing other than stopping – and hopefully catching – the ball on his mind. His anticipation is impressive, for sure, but without the bravery, he would not be able to put that anticipation into practice. That bravery shouldn’t be taken for granted. He is protected only by a helmet, a box and shin pads, after all. There is a lot more of his body that can be bruised and battered when standing that close. We all know the damage the ball can inflict and, over the last couple of weeks on this tour, we have seen two short-leg fielders injured. One of them (Pathum Nissanka) required a precautionary trip to a hospital; the other was Jennings’ opening partner, Rory Burns. The fact that Burns was one of those fielders may be relevant. In the early days of this tour, Burns looked the better short-leg fielder. But after that blow, the England management decided that Jennings was the better fit for the position, not least because he seemed more keen on it but also because Burns is the more agile ground fielder. But while Jennings was not a natural in the position, he has worked hard in training with Paul Collingwood and Paul Farbrace. He has concentrated, in particular, on staying low and in position until the very last moment to give himself every opportunity of creating such chances. He has, very quickly, been involved in three memorable catches which have provided a huge boost to his bowlers and his team. When difficult selections have to be made, in a team so packed with options as England’s current Test squad, the ability to make such contributions may well prove valuable for Jennings.

– Pra nota 10, faltou tempo.

– O futuro a Deus pertence.

'Plan of controlling run rate worked' – Amir

Left-arm fast bowler believes it’s still only “50-50” despite Pakistan’s outstanding bowling day

Danyal Rasool in Johannesburg11-Jan-2019Mohammad Amir may have taken time to put plans into action, but South Africa found themselves in a straitjacket once he began to execute them. Having gone wicketless despite being the tightest of the Pakistan bowlers in a pair of sessions where South Africa scored close to four runs per over, the left-arm fast bowler found his rewards after tea.For his part, Amir said the riches he and his fellow bowlers found after tea had to do with sticking to the plans more effectively than they had done on a surface that offers more to the batsmen than the previous two did.”When the batsman is settled in, he can get the runs. It’s very difficult to control the run rate but as I said, if you stick with the plans, you can get rewards,” he said. “You have to bowl as a combination. It’s a bowling unit so we have to back each other up. I think (Mohammad) Abbas and I were doing that because that was the plan to control the run rate. That’s why we were successful.”Numbers show Amir was most effective just short of a good length. Of the 27 balls, he conceded nine runs; it was also the length that brought him both wickets. In addition, the South African batsmen were in control for just 70.3% of the deliveries Amir bowled at that length, the least comfortable they were at any length for any bowler all innings.Amir said there wasn’t a special plan for any batsmen, but added that Aiden Markram had played exceptionally well and required the greatest effort to bring back under control.”I was bowling with the same plan. He was a good batsman playing very good shots. We were bowling with the plan, we had to bowl on middle and off. We don’t want to give him runs and we did it.”Pakistan’s bowling fightback aside, the mood after the high of the final session would be slightly sullied by losing two early wickets in an awkward seven overs before stumps. Most worryingly, it was the man in form, Shan Masood, and the man supposed to be the leader of the batting attack, Azhar Ali, who succumbed before play, leading Amir to believe the game was very much in the balance.”It’s a 50/50 call [on who won the day],” he said. “It’s Test cricket and you can’t predict anything before the match ends. We have to bat well and if we don’t lose a wicket in the first session (on Saturday) we have a good chance. We are teammates and we have to back up each other. It’s cricket and anything can happen. Sometimes I didn’t bowl well and sometimes you struggle with the batting. It’s all about momentum.”
