Will Pucovski, the 20-year old batsman, has been substituted out of Victoria’s Sheffield Shield match in Melbourne with a concussion. The incident took place in the 19th over of the team’s second innings when he was hit on the head while ducking into a bouncer from New South Wales’ Sean Abbott.Pucovski dropped to his knees after the ball struck flush on the side of his helmet and was losing his balance when Abbott rushed to his side and kept him propped up. The umpires immediately called for medical attention and he was soon taken off the field by Cricket Victoria’s staff. The 34-year old allrounder Daniel Christian has taken his place in the XI with the Sheffield Shield actively trialling the use of concussion subs.Trefor James, the Cricket Victoria doctor, said Pucovski was ruled out from taking further part in the match but will stay with the team for further observation. “We will continue to monitor him over the coming days, and we can then determine a return to play plan for him.”Abbott needed several moments to compose himself as well. In November 2014, a delivery from Abbott had struck Phillip Hughes on the neck, causing a fatal injury. The umpires gave Abbott time to recover and Victoria captain Aaron Finch, who came in following Pucovski’s retirement, also went up to share a few words with the bowler. The match continues at Junction Oval with Victoria successfully securing a first-innings lead of 28.Pucovski had to deal with concussion last season as well. He was making his first-class debut and while fielding at mid-off – on his birthday – he was struck on the head by a ball that deviated off an uneven outfield. Pucovski suffered a similar injury – this time while batting – in the one-day cup that followed. He left the field briefly, returned to bat again only to be bowled three balls into resuming his innings. The medical staff later confirmed that Pucovski had suffered delayed-onset concussion.

SA likely to persist with extra batsman

South Africa are likely to keep their combination of seven batsmen for the second Test against Australia which starts on Friday. Though they had opted for a fourth fast bowler at the expense of a batsman in the previous series against India, a lack of big contributions from their line-up, a strong Australian bowling attack and surfaces that are expected to be drier and more abrasive than usual have forced the hosts to rethink their approach.St George’s Park is traditionally the slowest surface out of the big Test venues in South Africa, and is generally where spinners find some success. It is also where reverse swing has been a factor in the past and, with Mitchell Starc showing how effectively he could make use of that in Durban, the need for an extra batsman is apparent. “When you look at the nature of the pitch and the Aussie line-up, you feel like you need an extra batter,” coach Ottis Gibson said. “We bowled them out twice but we weren’t able to get enough runs, especially in the first innings. You can’t bat that badly in your first innings against a top team like Australia and expect to win the Test match. Even though we gave ourselves a chance of winning in the end, the poor batting in the first innings really cost us.”After being shot out for 162, with the big names not performing and the lower order collapsing, South Africa were behind the game from day two. Gibson said they simply had to “bat better” as the series moves on and the second innings in Durban showed they are capable of doing so. Aiden Markram led the resistance with a career-best 143, Theunis de Bruyn boshed an aggressive 36 and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock returned to form with a stubborn 83.With the places of seniors Dean Elgar, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis secure, South Africa could go in with the same line-up, however they may give consideration to reserve batsman Temba Bavuma, if he has recovered from injury. Bavuma suffered a broken finger earlier in the year and has not played franchise cricket since January 17. He featured in a club match in a fitness test of sorts before this series, but was ruled out of Durban because he was not fully recovered.Gibson revealed Bavuma may be able to play in Port Elizabeth, but did not say at whose expense. “Temba is being assessed by medical staff. Last week he felt he wasn’t 100%. He’s had an extra week now and is hitting more balls in the nets. Hopefully he’ll be closer to playing.”Similarly, the extra quick in the squad, Lungi Ngidi may have to wait a little longer for his turn after an impressive debut against India. South Africa’s struggles to nip out the Australian tail has led to some calls for Ngidi to play but Gibson has faith in the current pack to do the job. “With regards to the lower-order bowling, they have got Starc and you’ve seen how he has bowled to our tail. He has been aggressive but he’s also pitched the ball up and hit the stumps. We have Rabada, even Keshav bowled well. We’ve got to find a way to get the tail out and it might be with the spinner coming into it to try and disrupt their tail that way.”

'Important to have a Netherlands-based captain' – coach Campbell

Pieter Seelaar’s appointment as Netherlands captain to replace the outgoing Peter Borren was motivated by a continued desire amongst the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) to have a locally-based player who trains with the bulk of the squad year-round, according to Netherlands head coach Ryan Campbell.”We have players like Ryan ten Doeschate and Roelof van der Merwe who could fill the captaincy as well, but we feel it’s very important that a Dutch-bound player leads our Dutch team,” Campbell told ESPNcricinfo. “That’s no disrespect to our international players because we love them all and they’re massive leaders within our squad, but the feeling has always been that we want a guy who lives in the Netherlands to lead our team, who is always training with our squad, and Pieter fits the bill perfectly.”The facts are our [English] county players don’t play in all of our matches and they don’t train with our squad. We have a summer training squad of 22 and to have one without a captain is a recipe for disaster. We’ve always felt you need a captain and a leader who is training and playing with the lads. I’m very excited to see what Pieter’s going to bring to the table, because he’s a different character to Peter Borren. He thinks about the game a lot and his plans have already started.”Seelaar’s career stats, 111 wickets in 120 List A matches plus 33 wickets in 59 T20s, are modest for a bowling allrounder, but the 30-year-old is one of the longest tenured Dutch players after making his senior debut against Warwickshire in 2005. His career List A batting average is 14.64, but it is a deceptive figure slanted heavily by his early career as a tailender. In 2015, he was one of the leading scorers in the Dutch domestic first division playing for VOC and notched a List A career-best 68 against Scotland in the second round of the WCL Championship later that summer. In 2017, Seelaar further cemented his batting credentials with an unbeaten 138 in an epic stand with Ben Cooper during their drawn Intercontinental Cup match against Hong Kong. Add in the fact that Seelaar is arguably the top Netherlands outfielder – he has a reputation for taking some sensational catches including one to dismiss Kevin O’Brien at the 2016 World T20 – and Campbell felt the decision was a no-brainer.”He’s the perfect age and experience, he’s been in the national set-up for a long time now and knows what goes around international cricket,” Campbell said. “We believe that his game will improve and we’ve seen that with his bowling particularly. In the last 12 months, apart from an injury, he’s been a standout for us with the ball and his batting is an untapped resource. He knows that he needs to keep improving but we feel that the character of Pieter Seelaar is the best fit for us with a young squad.”Seelaar will be leading a Netherlands A squad this weekend in Guernsey before taking command of the full senior side for a T20I tri-series with Ireland and Scotland in June.As for Borren’s retirement at age 34, Campbell said it should not be seen as the first domino to fall in a move toward making more changes within the squad – he doesn’t want “players looking over their shoulder”. However, he said that competition for spots may be ramped up following the team’s poor performance at the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. With two years until the next World T20 in Australia and the start of the 13-team ODI League, Campbell wants to take as many opportunities possible to give younger players a chance to develop.”We play that ODI League in 2020 and that’s another couple years down the track. That’s a long time for guys who are suddenly 36 or 37. It [Borren’s stepping down] was decided mutually,” Campbell said. “He felt that he didn’t have the energy to be there in two or three years’ time. If that was the case, then when we’re not playing in major tournaments, we need to get our youngsters as much experience as we can because the facts are we don’t play enough cricket. The Bas de Leedes and Sikandar Zulfiqars, these sort of guys need to play cricket and that was the decision from all sides.”Campbell paid tribute to Borren, saying he’d made a great friend for life in him. “He beat the drums for the Associate cause. The Associate world is a tough world to live in. Just seeing his stats, the number of games he played over such a long period, some people who don’t realise will say, ‘Gee he didn’t play that many games’. But that’s how tough it is. You’ll play a decade and only play 40 ODIs or 40 T20Is. It’s a tough world but he’s a ripping bloke and a fantastic competitor and I wish him all the best.”

'Lehmann is one of the good guys' – Allan Border

With Darren Lehmann set to speak publicly for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal broke, former Australia captain Allan Border has thrown his support behind the under-fire coach

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Mar-2018With Darren Lehmann likely to speak publicly on Wednesday – for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal broke – former Australia captain Allan Border has thrown his support behind the under-fire coach. An investigation led by Cricket Australia’s head of integrity, Iain Roy, had found that Lehmann had been unaware of plans made on the third day of the Cape Town Test to generate reverse swing by tampering with the ball. CA’s chief executive James Sutherland told reporters on Tuesday that only the captain Steven Smith, the vice-captain David Warner and opener Cameron Bancroft, who was eventually caught on camera roughing up the ball with a foreign object, had been involved in the plan and that all of them have been ordered to leave South Africa.”If [the] integrity officer has been through and interviewed people and he’s satisfied that Darren Lehmann didn’t know specifically what was going on at the time, I’m very relaxed,” Border told . “That’s a good news item, isn’t it, not the other way.”We’re talking about one of the good guys in Australian cricket,” he continued. “He’s done a fantastic job with that team and if he wasn’t aware of what was going on, there’s no problem at all.”However, another former Australia captain, Michael Clarke, felt the “full story” was yet to come out, while England’s Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen were not convinced by the CA investigation that cleared Lehmann of wrongdoing. When the incident occurred at Newlands on Saturday, Lehmann was seen with his walkie-talkie seemingly speaking to 12th man Peter Handscomb soon after footage of Bancroft using yellow sticky tape to scuff up the rough side of the ball – the opposite side that a player usually shines – was shown on TV screens around the ground. Handscomb then went on to the field to have a chat with Bancroft, who later shoved the tape down his trousers, prompting scrutiny from match officials. At the post-day press conference, Smith and Bancroft admitted to ball-tampering, leading to sanctions from the ICC and CA, pressure from the Australian government and widespread public outrage.

Nottingham Forest: Reds want to seal another new deal alongside Worrall

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper could now look to open talks with another of his star men at the City Ground over a new contract, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Nottingham Forest?

Last week, Nottingham Forest club captain Joe Worrall put pen to paper on a contract extension with the Tricky Trees, which will now see him stay at the East Midlands-based outfit until the summer of 2026.

Delighted with his decision, Worrall told Nottingham Forest's official website: "I’m over the moon and just so pleased to extend my time with the club. You only have to look to the future and it looks very bright. Everybody knows how much we care to try and improve as a team and try and push on as a club."

Football Insider claim that Worrall has received a significant pay rise from his previous £15,000 per week terms at Nottingham Forest and also indicate that the former England Under-21 international had interest in his services from elsewhere in the summer.

Worrall had less than a year left on his deal at the City Ground and would've been able to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in January had he not found an extended agreement with his boyhood club.

Meanwhile, as per reports in Sweden, Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga has been released from Sweden's international camp after sustaining an injury in training and played no part in their 5-0 victory over Estonia in EURO 2024 qualifying.

The former Manchester United star will now return to England to undergo treatment for his knock and it is unclear how long he will be out for upon further assessment.

Who else could be offered a new contract?

According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest are considering offering full-back Serge Aurier a new contract, which would come off the back of a strong start to the 2023/34 campaign from the Ivory Coast international.

The £50k-a-week ace is out of contract next summer and could discuss a pre-contract with foreign sides in January; however, he has enjoyed a rise to prominence under Reds' boss Cooper despite competing with Ola Aina and Gonzalo Montiel for the right-back position.

Aurier has made four appearances in all competitions for Nottingham Forest this term and has managed to notch two assists in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

WhoScored note that Aurier has managed to earn an average match rating in the Premier League this campaign of 7.01/10 and show that he has successfully completed 3.5 clearances per match, demonstrating his defensive reliability when called upon.

As per FBRef, the former Tottenham Hotspur defender has also excelled in comparison to his positional peers across the top five divisions in Europe in the art of aerial duels, winning an average of 2.21 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the 98th percentile for this metric.

Cooper won't want to lose someone like Aurier on a free transfer next year and offering him a new deal would be a sensible decision to retain some valuable experience at the City Ground.

Rangers: Ibrox side had a bigger talent than Danilo in McLeish’s 6ft 2 ‘trojan’

Glasgow Rangers hobbled to a rather laborious 1-0 win against Motherwell in the Premiership at the weekend and while three points is always a good sign, the quality of performance was anything but.

Michael Beale has failed to implement any sort of tactical identity or style on this Gers side, despite being in the job for ten months.

Of course, it takes time for summer arrivals to settle and get up to the required pace of play, and with nine new faces coming through the doors at Ibrox, it may require some patience.

Time isn’t on Beale’s side however, with far too many of his new signings failing to step up and hit the ground running, most notably Danilo.

Having spent £6m on signing the forward from Feyenoord, the Brazilian striker was expected to be the man who could replace the goals of Antonio Colak and Alfredo Morelos, yet he has been underused to say the least.

How has Danilo performed for Rangers?

The lavish fee it cost to bring the player to Ibrox would indicate that he was going to go straight into the starting XI, yet it hasn’t quite worked out like that so far.

Danilo

Indeed, the 24-year-old has made only four starts across the ten games he has played for the Light Blues, even failing to make the starting XI for the crunch Old Firm clash at the start of September.

He has scored three times during his spell on the pitch, yet his progress has been stalled by suffering a fractured cheekbone against St Johnstone just a couple of weeks ago.

The forward underwent a small surgery to fix the issue, and he will be hoping to return to the squad sooner rather than later.

Once fit and healthy, Beale will be expecting him to make a big impact in the first team, yet the 43-year-old would surely love to call upon a former forward or two in order to give his side an attacking edge.

Dado Prso would be an ideal player to cause chaos to opposition defences and there is no doubt, that at the peak of his powers, the Croatian was a bigger talent than Danilo.

What happened to Dado Prso?

Prso had spent a few seasons playing for AS Monaco before his goal-scoring exploits finally caught the imagination of the rest of the continent.

Dado Prso for Rangers

Having netted 15 goals during the 2002/03 season, the 6 foot 2 machine shone on the biggest stage of all – the Champions League.

He scored seven times in the competition as the French side reached the final for the first time, but Prso will be remembered for his wonderful display against Deportivo La Coruna.

Against the Spanish side, he became just the third player after Marco van Basten and Simone Inzaghi to score four goals during a Champions League fixture, and they all arrived before the 50th minute.

This clearly caught the eye of Gers boss Alex McLeish, who was going through a turbulent season in charge of the Glasgow side and by May 2004, the giant Croatian had signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers.

McLeish heaped praise on the bustling striker, saying: "He is very direct and he has a great presence which is just what we need. I am absolutely delighted to have signed a player of his calibre."

How many goals did Dado Prso score for Rangers?

Failing to win any domestic trophy during the 2003/04 season was deemed a massive failure and McLeish sought to fix it. New arrivals included not only Prso, but also Nacho Novo, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Marvin Andrews.

With Celtic and Rangers neck and neck throughout the whole campaign, the Light Blues snatched the title at the very death as the Parkhead outfit lost to Motherwell while the Ibrox side defeated Hibernian and Prso played a crucial role in the title success.

Indeed, he netted an impressive 20 goals in all competitions and there was no greater sight than seeing the forward in full flow, charging towards the opposition defence.

He played under McLeish for two seasons and the former Scotland manager had nothing but fond words for him during his two years coaching the player.

He said: “Dado was awesome, just awesome and I’ve kept in touch with him over the years. He is just a wonderful human being.

“When we went up to Aberdeen and won during the Helicopter Sunday year, big Dado played in the Pittodrie wind and rain like an absolute trojan.

“He gave their defence water in the head on that particular day. All the guys would run through brick walls for us but Dado was just infectious. He was so liked by all the players, he was just so popular. A great character and the players loved him.”

Although he didn’t quite reach the goal-scoring heights of his first season, scoring just nine and four goals respectively in the subsequent campaigns – totalling 36 for the club – there was no denying his performances and never-say-die attitude.

He endeared himself to the supporters by netting three times against Celtic – twice in the league and once in a League Cup clash – during his spell in Glasgow, and he had everything in his locker.

Prso could play with the ball at his feet, had sublime pace and was like a brick wall during aerial duels and these attributes combined to make a striker who was feared by defences all over the country.

He’d be an upgrade on the majority, if not all, of the current Gers' attacking players and his all-round game appears to be slightly better than Danilo’s, although he hasn’t exactly been given plenty of chances to showcase his true ability.

The Croatian was a genuine star who represented his country at both a European Championship and World Cup, scoring against France at the former.

In all honesty, he could have played in the Premier League during the peak of his powers. Prso was that good and Beale would certainly love to have a striker like the former Monaco man leading the line for the club over the coming months as they seek to challenge for trophies.

Breakthrough: Chelsea receive green light to seal big off-field deal

Chelsea are in a bit of a rut on the pitch, but Blues fans could now be set for some welcome news away from the field of play after an important recent development emerged.

What's the latest news involving Chelsea?

As per Stadium Astro via The Evening Standard, former Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon, who worked under Mauricio Pochettino when he was at the club, has suggested that the Argentinian coach's training methods may have had their part to play in their poor run of form so far in the Premier League.

The 36-year-old stated: "It’s a bit like Man United at the minute, it’s just story after story, and that’s when, normally, things are not going well and players are unhappy. If you do look at the injury list, I actually looked at it and thought [about] Pochettino’s training methods. He does change the training routine. He did it when he came to Spurs. Some of our players, we did struggle at the beginning because it was a completely different load and maybe that is playing a part."

Chelsea have failed to net a single goal in their last three Premier League fixtures and sit 15th in the division, with just five points from their opening six fixtures. Nevertheless, Football Insider report that Chelsea's hierarchy have essentially ruled out the possibility of sacking Pochettino early into his tenure at Stamford Bridge, bringing to an end the trigger-happy approach to managers adopted during the Roman Abramovich era and also with ex-boss Graham Potter.

Cited by BBC Sport, former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has criticised the quality of the Blues' starting side, stating: "We know scoring is a problem but you look at their first XI and it's a bit of a development squad. What I find interesting about their opening six [league] games, I thought he would've chopped and changed a lot but that hasn't actually been the case. There have been eight players who have started every game so they have had a chance to get up to speed and get that rhythm."

Do Chelsea have a sponsor?

As per The Telegraph, Chelsea have finally received Premier League approval for US-based sports data company Infinite Athlete to become their new front-of-shirt sponsor, signalling the end of a long road to finding a replacement for controversial sponsor Three.

The report states that the Blues will earn around £40 million a season for the deal, with Infinite Athlete making their first strides into English football following partner company Tempus Ex already securing involvement with Chelsea earlier this year.

Unusually, Chelsea have played their first few matches of the Premier League with a blank shirt, which some football romantics would argue is a nice change from the globalised world of football sponsorship.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has also taken to social media platform X to confirm the news, stating: "Infinite Athlete are set to be announced on Wednesday as Chelsea new front of shirt sponsor."

The Guardian report that Chelsea could sport their new sponsor against Fulham at Craven Cottage next Monday, while the women's side will also wear the new logo moving forward.

Chelsea: Sky Sports pundit thinks "monster" player may join Pochettino

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards has a theory that Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino could sign a "monster" player from abroad.

Who have Chelsea signed 2023?

Chelsea continued their lavish spending under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital with a £397 million total expenditure over the latest summer transfer window. Indeed, Pochettino's side sealed an array of deals for Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Djordje Petrovic, Angelo and Deivid Washington before deadline day.

In terms of outgoings, Chelsea managed to offload Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi – who all left either on loan or permanently for £230 million in total.

Whenever the Stamford Bridge side are concerned, you can always expect headlines to be made with transfers, but that hasn't exactly translated into results on the field. So far, Chelsea have suffered defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, West Ham and Nottingham Forest – while also failing to clinch needed wins against the likes of Liverpool and Bournemouth.

Their sole victory came against Luton Town, who have largely been tipped to go straight back down to the Championship. Pochettino, speaking after his side's latest 1-0 loss to Aston Villa at home, says his side need to grow up and fast.

“We need to grow up like a team, not only in an individual way,” said Pochettino. “I think players like Nico who are so young and feeling the Premier League, they need time. In this type of game, we are competing and want to win and football is about winning. But also players, when they are young, need to learn, and experience and make mistakes. That’s why we feel disappointed as there are too many situations like this.”

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

Perhaps most alarmingly, Chelsea have failed to score a single goal in their last three league games despite creating a host of chances in the final third. You could argue that the missing ingredient for Pochettino is a world-class, instinctive scorer with a proven record at finding the net.

Napoli strikerVictor Osimhen.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Brentford striker Ivan Toney have been tipped as options for the new year in that regard, with reports even suggesting they could use players as makeweights in a deal for the latter forward. Osimhen, meanwhile, is said to be attracting interest from Chelsea, with Sky pundit Richards theorizing he will make the move to west London.

When discussing the Nigeria international on The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker asked the question “where does he go from here?”. Richards replied: “Chelsea," while Alan Shearer mooted Newcastle as a tongue in cheek option.

The 24-year-old scored 26 league goals for Napoli last season and played a heavy hand in helping them clinch their first Scudetto title since the 1990s. As a result, members of the media have called Osimhen a "monster" striker.
