Wolves Set To Submit Offer For 21 y/o Brazilian Defender

Wolverhampton Wanderers are ready to submit an offer for Corinthians defender Murillo, as Gary O'Neil looks to get his first signing over the line after making the move to the club,

So far this summer, the Midlands club have made just one signing with the Premier League season edging closer and closer.

What's the latest on Murillo to Wolves?

The Midlands club are prepared to bid €12m (£10m) for the defender this summer, according to Goal Brasil, via Sport Witness, who claim that Corinthians are unlikely to accept the offer, given that they rejected the same offer from Fiorentina.

If Wolves want to secure Murillo's signature then they may need to act fast after Fiorentina's bid was rejected, as reports in Brazil via Sport Witness suggest that Nottingham Forest are also interested in the central defender, and are willing to spend €15m (£13m) this summer.

Even Forest's bid may not be enough, however, with Corinthians reportedly requesting €20m (£17m) for their defender in the current transfer window.

Out of the two Midlands clubs, it is Forest who have shown their spending power this summer, welcoming Anthony Elanga, Chris Wood on a permanent deal, as well as Ola Aina, and Matt Turner for a reported combined €43m (£38m).

Wolves, meanwhile, have welcomed just one reinforcement, welcoming Matt Doherty back to the club, and also making deals for Matheus Cunha and Boubacar Traore permanent this summer.

Following the exit of Julen Lopetegui, and the appointment of O'Neil, whether they welcome Murillo this summer or not, Wolves are in a state of chaos as we enter the Premier League campaign.

Who is Murillo?

Clearly highly rated in Brazil, given his reported price-tag, Murillo has plenty of time to get even better, given the fact that he's still only 21-years-old.

Featuring 28 times for Corinthians last season, the central defender already comes with plenty of first-team experience, despite his young age.

Wolves could do with a centre-back, too, following the permanent exit of Conor Coady to Championship side Leicester City this summer. Replacing an ageing player with one of the up and full of potential would represent solid business at Molinuex this summer.

The only concern may be Murillo's height. Standing at 5 foot 9, the defender isn't exactly an imposing centre-back. But, as proven by Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez, who helped the Red Devils and David de Gea to the Golden Glove last season, height isn't necessarily the most important trait.

O'Neil will be well aware of just how important it is to get the rest of the summer window right, and how crucial it is that his new side get off to a solid start in the Premier League.

Wolves square off against Manchester United at Old Trafford in their opening match of the season, in one of the toughest starts that they could have asked for.

With negotiations still in the early stages, it is incredibly unlikely that we'll see Murillo in a Wolves shirt for that game. Though, it must be said, if the Midlands side are willing to finally spend money this summer, it could certainly be a deal to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Mohammad Shahzad receives one-year ban for doping code violation

The ICC has retroactively suspended the Afghanistan wicketkepeer from January 17, 2017 to January 17, 2018. The matches he has played in between this period will be expunged from his record

Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad has been handed a retrospective one-year ban by the ICC. The 29-year old was found to be in breach of the ICC Anti-Doping Code, having ingested the banned substance Clenbuterol.A statement on the ICC website said Shahzad had “inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance, as a contaminant of a weight-loss product he was taking, Hydroxycut.” On Thursday, the global governing body announced that Shahzad has been suspended from all cricket-related activities for 12 months after pleading guilty to breaching Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping Code. The ban has been applied retrospectively from January 17, 2017 for that was the day Shahzad gave his urine sample for testing. In a form submitted alongside, he had ticked “nil” when asked if he had taken any prescribed or non-prescribed medication or supplements.A World-Anti Doping Association (WADA) certified laboratory in Utah (USA) confirmed the presence of Clenbuterol, which is on the 2017 list of banned substances. The ICC charged Shahzad on April 13. On April 26, he was provisionally suspended. And on June 28, he admitted to his offence.”Mr Shahzad admitted the violation and a twelve-month suspension has been imposed, backdated to 17 January 2017, the date of his sample collection. Mr Shahzad will, therefore, be eligible to return to cricket on 17 January, 2018,” the ICC said in a media release. But Shahzad has played cricket in the time he was not meant to. He represented Afghanistan in 10 ODIs, seven T20Is and one four-day Intercontinental Cup match between January and March this year. His statistics from those games will now be expunged.”In accordance with Article 10.8 of the Code, all individual results obtained by Mr Shahzad since the date of his sample collection (17 January 2017) until the date of his Provisional Suspension (26 April 2017) are disqualified with all of the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any individual medals or other prizes awarded,” the ICC said.It is understood that the ICC can only stop a player from participating in a match after the issuing of a provisional suspension. Shahzad was handed the penalty on April 26 and he has not played since. It is also understood that the ICC decided to backdate his ban to give Shahzad credit for admitting to his mistake. As a result, he will be eligible to return to cricket in just under six weeks, well in time for Afghanistan’s campaign at the World Cup qualifier in March in Zimbabwe.*The key to the relative leniency of the punishment appears to be the ICC’s satisfaction that the ingestion of Clenbuterol was “unintentional” and “inadvertent”.Shahzad mounted his defense by saying the Afghanistan team management had asked him to shed “8 kgs” of his weight in October 2016. He said he had received advice from the owner of a gymnasium in his hometown of Jalalabad to take Hydroxycut to lose weight. This was in 2013.After being told to get in better shape, Shahzad checked with Afghanistan physiotherapist Azeem Malik if he could take Hydroxycut. Malik, having checked if it contained banned substances or supplements, gave the nod. So Shahzad took one capsule of Hydroxycut from mid-October to early December 2016. He lost the 8kg of weight in that period.Nevertheless, Shahzad continued taking Hydroxycut right up to when he was tested by the ICC in Dubai, where he was playing the Desert T20 Challenge. An analysis done by an expert on the pill revealed “small amounts” of Clenbuterol. The ICC then asked the WADA laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland to verify the expert’s finding and tally it with Shahzad’s original test. Eventually, the ICC was told that Shahzad’s explanation could be “valid.””In making the decision, the ICC accepted that Mr Shahzad had inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance, as a contaminant of a weight-loss product he was taking, Hydroxycut,” the ICC said. “Mr Shahzad was able to satisfy the ICC through evidence and submissions prepared on his behalf that he had no intention to enhance his sporting performance through the use of prohibited substances or to mask the use of another performance enhancing substance and had, instead, inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance after taking Hyrdoxycut supplements which were contaminated with Clenbuterol.”The anti-doping violation for which Shahzad was found guilty carried a punishment of four years. But the ICC, satisfied with his explanation, halved that to two years. Subsequently, it considered factors like Shahzad not being fluent in English and his limitations in searching for information on the internet and ruled that “the ICC accepts Mr Shahzad has established No Significant Fault or Negligence pursuant to Article 10.5.2 of the Code thus enabling the two year period of ineligibility to be reduced by upto 50%”.*0944 GMT Friday, December 8, 2017. An earlier reference to Andre Russell’s suspension has been removed. Mohammad Shahzad’s suspension was decided by the ICC while Russell’s suspension was imposed by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission.

Everton: Dyche Eyeing "Amazingly Talented" £8m Demarai Gray Upgrade

Everton are interested in bolstering their attacking ranks with a struggling star following news of Demarai Gray's supposed departure to Saudi Arabia this month.

What's the latest on Callum Hudson-Odoi to Everton?

According to the Evening Standard, Sean Dyche's Everton could make a swoop for Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi after Fulham's reluctance to meet the £8m transfer fee, with fellow top-flight rivals Nottingham Forest also interested.

Sky Sports report Dharmesh Sheth has since corroborated such claims by stating that the Cottagers' negotiations have indeed stalled, paving the way for the Toffees to hijack the deal.

Everton have bolstered the attacking ranks with a wealth of acquisitions this summer, but yielding no points and no goals from their first two Premier League matches, it's understandable that Dyche seeks further firepower.

How good is Callum Hudson-Odoi?

Hudson-Odoi had the world at his feet.

The fleet-footed wideman had burst onto the scene at Stamford Bridge, hailed as "brilliant" and "the big one" by pundit Darren Bent after a scintillating performance against West Bromwich Albion back in 2020, but the three-cap England international has hit his nadir after a heavy fall from grace.

He was even the subject of £70m transfer attention from Bayern Munich in 2020, though Chelsea rejected the German Bundesliga champions' advances and now look to offload their struggling star for a paltry £8m.

The talent is unequivocal, however, and there is a reason that Hudson-Odoi was earning such lucrative attention in the formative phase of his career, described as "amazingly talented" by scout Jacek Kulig.

Despite an inauspicious loan spell with Bayer Leverkusen last season, where the ace posted just one goal and one assist from 21 outings, starting 13 times, the Cobham graduate boasts a wealth of qualities that could arrest the awe of the Everton masses once provided with a platform to truly grow into his skin.

As per FBref, Hudson-Odoi ranks among the top 10% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 18% for progressive passes and the top 15% for progressive carries per 90.

Effectively, this highlights both the crispness of his ball-playing skills and his aptitude as a box-crashing vessel, and while the fluidity in decisive moments has faded, he could yet restore his impetus.

It could be an especially prudent move to make given the likely departure of Gray at Everton, with the 27-year-old poised for a move to Saudi club Al Shabab after the Toffees reached an agreement on a fee, though first will look to secure a replacement.

Enter Hudson-Odoi.

The £180k-per-week gem – who the Evening Standard claim will take a 'significant' pay cut to get his career back on track – can play across both flanks and actually trumps his Jamaican counterpart in several key elements.

Indeed, Gray ranks among the bottom 22% of attacking midfielders and wingers for progressive passes, the bottom 1% for progressive passes, the bottom 23% for successful take-ons and the top 37% for progressive carries per 90.

The £25k-per-week attacker did manage to score six goals from 36 matches across all competitions last term, but his overall game does not cut the mustard considering the sustenance of Everton as a top-flight outfit.

Hudson Odoi – roughly five years younger – has had a tough time of late and is leagues below the expectation when this prodigious bundle of talent announced himself at Stamford Bridge several years ago, but he has maintained some of the core qualities requisite for success and Dyche would do well to discard Gray and provide the Chelsea star with the opportunity to tap into his potential on Merseyside.

Chelsea Keen On Signing 26-Year-Old Former PL Winger

Chelsea could still make an attacking signing in the remaining days of the transfer window, and they have turned their attention to La Liga for a potential addition, according to a new claim.

Do Chelsea need to sign another attacker?

The Blues have enjoyed a productive few months when it comes to transfer business, with Mauricio Pochettino coming in as manager and rebuilding the squad.

A number of players have moved on, including Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, while the likes of Axel Disasi, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Nicolas Jackson represent good incoming signings who can possibly take the club forward.

In the early weeks of the new Premier League season, however, there have been signs that further attacking reinforcements could be needed, with Mykhailo Mudryk struggling to make an impact and too much onus arguably on Raheem Sterling and Jackson to produce end product currently.

There is still enough time for that to change at Stamford Bridge, should Pochettino feel the need to make another signing, and a new update suggests that further business isn't out of the question.

Will Chelsea sign Raphinha?

According to The Daily Mail, Barcelona winger Raphinha is seen as an option to come in this summer, as is fellow teammate Ferran Torres, with internal talks held by Stamford Bridge chiefs.

"Names floated for Chelsea as potential forward targets include Ferran Torres and Raphinha at Barcelona and Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe. Interest is not particularly advanced but that trio are among the names being discussed by the Chelsea hierarchy at this stage."

Raphinha could be a great signing for Chelsea before the end of deadline day, having shone so much for Leeds United during their time in the Premier League. The Brazilian has scored 17 goals and registered 12 assists in the competition, once scoring a penalty at Stamford Bridge, and his pace, trickery and end product from the right wing could be a great option for the Blues.

Granted, Sterling is currently in superb form in that position, but the Englishman has shown how good he can be on the left flanks throughout his career, and could still thrive there for Chelsea. If they had him and Raphinha on either flank, and Jackson leading the line, it could be a formidable-looking attacking unit for Pochettino, while simply having the Brazil international would also improve squad depth.

Former Leeds teammate Dan James has described the 26-year-old as a "magician" in the past, highlighting the technical quality he has in his locker, and he could jump at the chance to join the Blues, having not always managed to be a regular for Barcelona since arriving from Elland Road last year.

While he still featured in 36 of Barca's La Liga game last season, only 25 of them were starts, and if he was promised more regular playing time by Pochettino in west London, it could be a move that really appeals to him, also helping improve Chelsea significantly at the time.

At 26, Raphinha is still at a young enough age to improve further and be a long-term signing for the Blues, so they could look to bring him in before the transfer window slams shut.

Newcastle Can Land Lascelles Upgrade With £34m Swoop

Newcastle United's strength in depth will be put to the test this season as Eddie Howe's side are set to compete across four competitions.

Who have Newcastle signed this summer?

The Magpies have bolstered their options, possibly to combat the extra games that the Champions League provides, by making three new first-team signings so far.

Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali, and Harvey Barnes have all come through the door on permanent deals to bolster the head coach's roster, whilst Lewis Hall is reportedly poised to join on an initial loan from Chelsea.

Journalist Craig Hope recently claimed that the club are also eyeing up a new central defender and that Torino star Perr Schuurs, who has been valued at €40m (£34m), is one of a number of players they are interested in.

How good is Perr Schuurs?

The 23-year-old titan is a solid centre-back who enjoyed a good season in the Serie A last term, which means that he could be a shrewd signing for Howe.

Schuurs averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.88 over 30 league games for Torino and won 55% of his duels on the ground as he displayed his strength in physical contests to win possession for his side.

As previously stated, depth will be important for Newcastle as they compete in two domestic cup competitions, the Premier League, and the Champions League.

This means that Howe needs to have players he can rely on if one of his first-choice options needs to be taken out of the side and Schuurs could arrive as an "outstanding" – as he was once described by journalist Josh Bunting – upgrade on Jamaal Lascelles.

The Magpies skipper is the current back-up to Fabian Schar and Sven Botman and struggled in his limited appearances as he averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.53 and lost 75% of his ground duels across seven Premier League outings.

This came after the ex-Nottingham Forest enforcer averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.73 and lost 57% of his ground battles over 26 top-flight matches during the 2021/22 campaign.

The 29-year-old dud's Sofascore ratings placed him 23rd out of 24 players within the squad last term and 16th during the previous season.

These statistics suggest that Schuurs would come in as a big upgrade on Lascelles in terms of the average level of his performances and his ability to come out on top in physical duels if he can translate his form from Italy over to England.

Former Ajax defender Perr Schuurs.

The Dutch colossus, who the aforementioned Bunting also once dubbed "dominant", could also provide more drive on the ball to push the team up the pitch.

Over the last 365 days, the Torino ace has completed 0.39 successful take-ons per 90, which places him in the top 17% of his positional peers among the top European leagues and competitions.

Lascelles, however, completed 0.04 per 90 during the 2021/22 Premier League campaign and ranked within the bottom 20% of centre-backs in the division.

This suggests that Schuurs could offer more in possession by taking on the opposition's press to gain yards and place his side in better positions to start attacks, which is another reason why he would come in as an upgrade on Lascelles to fill in for Botman or Schar when required.
