Aston Villa: Monchi Could Sign "Huge" £10m-rated Lucas Digne Upgrade

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Sevilla defender Marcos Acuna, with news from Spain providing an update on the Premier League side’s chase for further reinforcements.

After an impressive spell of activity in the transfer window, Unai Emery was dealt a triple hammer blow coming in the form of extensive injuries to two key players and a harrowing opening day defeat.

With Emiliano Buendia and Tyrone Mings out of action for the foreseeable future, the Spaniard will be forced to re-enter the market to bolster his side once more in areas beyond just covering for the absent duo.

Could Aston Villa sign Marcos Acuna?

Away from the injury blows Villa have been linked to LaLiga left-back, Acuna by journalist Matteo Moretto.

Moretto stated the interest, as well as claiming that there are ‘contacts between all parties involved’ regarding the potential move.

Valued around €11.5m (£10m) by FootballTransfers, Villa could land themselves a bargain for a defender with a host of experience in playing among Europe's elite.

How good is Marcos Acuna?

Having been lauded as “huge” by journalist Ignacio Raposo during Argentina’s crucial World Cup quarter-final win over the Netherlands, Acuna could be a strong name for Emery and president of football operations Monchi to chase this window.

At 31-years-old, the Argentine has secured almost 400 domestic appearances during his career, playing in his homeland, Portugal and Spain over the span of 12 years, via Transfermarkt.

With 53 caps for his country, the versatile defender made seven appearances on the road to claiming the World Cup in 2022, including playing 56 minutes in the final in a more advanced left midfielder position.

The versatility of the Sevilla gem’s game makes him a valuable asset to have in a squad, with the ability to play on both sides as a full-back and as a wide midfielder, contributing goals and assists as well as being defensively reliable.

Throughout his career, the 31-year-old has netted 34 goals and registered 63 assists, showcasing just what he could bring to Villa Park on the left side.

Deployed at left-back on the opening day was Lucas Digne, a full-back that was speculated to depart the Midlands this summer.

The Frenchman was blasted by writer Alex Berwick for “ball-watching” during their 5-1 thrashing to Newcastle United, making claims for his future at Villa Park even more dubious.

In hiring Acuna, Emery could find a perfect replacement for Digne, with the Argentine performing at a higher level on average to the 30-year-old in their respective 2022/23 league campaigns.

As per FBref, the Sevilla marvel averaged 2.68 tackles per 90 in LaLiga to the Frenchman’s 1.80 in the Premier League, as well as posing as a bigger threat progressively in areas that could benefit Emery’s style of play.

The reported target recorded an average of 4.80 progressive passes and 2.31 progressive carries per 90 for the Spanish side last season, as well as providing an impressive 1.79 key passes per 90.

Digne fell short in all decimals to Acuna last term, averaging 3.42 progressive passes, 1.74 progressive carries and 1.08 key passes per 90 in the Premier League, via FBref, communicating just how much of an upgrade Villa could acquire this summer.

It’s integral for the Villans to bounce back after such humiliation on the opening day, however, Monchi could take the heat away from Emery and co's first result of the season by securing the impressive and experienced talents of Acuna.

'We are not here to make up the numbers' – Bayliss

Trevor Bayliss has provided the clearest hint yet that Jake Ball has earned the final spot in England’s XI for the Brisbane Test

Trevor Bayliss has provided the clearest hint yet that Jake Ball has earned the final spot in England’s XI for the Brisbane Test. While Ball has bowled only 22 first-class deliveries on the tour – he sprained his ankle early in the Adelaide warm-up game and was subsequently deemed unfit to play in Townsville – Bayliss is content he has now proved his fitness and suggested he had done enough to win selection ahead of Craig Overton.Ball bowled 15 overs at full pace on Saturday. And, while England’s bowlers claimed only one wicket in the entire day on a slow Townsville pitch, Ball bowled Moeen Ali within a few minutes on the same surface in a practice session that followed the game.”I thought Ball was our best bowler in Perth and he started off that way again in Adelaide too,” Bayliss said. “He’s fine now. He bowled on Friday and got through a few spells in the nets today [Saturday]. He should be fit and raring to go for Brisbane.”Is it Ball v Overton for selection? I see it just like that, yes. Ball is fine now. He’s fully fit and will be available for selection. I’m pretty close to knowing the XI in my mind, yes.”Bayliss insisted he was not overly concerned by England’s lack of penetration on the final day in Townsville, instead crediting some fine batting from the two Cricket Australia XI centurions and a flat surface that offered bowlers little. He also suggested England’s batsmen had failed to fully capitalise on it the previous day.”We are always a bit disappointed when we don’t take 10 for 90, but the wicket was very flat,” he said. “And those two young guys batted very well. There were two young guys out there that batted very, very well. All credit to them. They looked good. It’s good for Australian cricket.”If you play cricket long enough those days will happen. They stuck at it and that’s all you can ask.”We lost a few wickets at the end of that first innings and probably should have scored a few more runs. From the bowling point of view, we tried a few different things, but I’m sure in the Test matches we’ll be back bowling line and length.”It’s not really damaging to us before the first Test. It was good to spend some time in the field. We will probably have another one or two of them in the Test matches. It was probably good to experience it and the heat as well.”Although the surfaces and the opposition have left England short of experience against the sort of pace anticipated in the Test series, Bayliss considered himself satisfied with their progress.”Over the three games we have got as much out of it as we possibly could,” he said. “We started slow, then built it up over the last couple of games. A Test match – an Ashes Test – will see our intensity rise as high as it possibly can.”A number of guys spent time in the middle with the bat and the bowlers got a lot of overs under their belts. Hopefully everyone now has got their rhythms right and they can come out next week and go from ball one.”Mark Stoneman has been our most consistent batsman. He looks like he’s made for this. He’s tough and nuggety and likes to get on with it when he gets the opportunity.”Bayliss also admitted a couple of selections in the Australian squad had surprised him. But while he was respectful of the opposition – conceding he was close to several members of the Australian team – he made it clear friendships will be put to one side.”There were one or two names in there we maybe weren’t expecting,” he said. “But they are all good players. No matter who Australia pick, they will be good players and we will have to play well to win.”Australia, whether batting or bowling, like to hit the opposition hard early. And we have been talking about going hard ourselves. We are not here to make up the numbers. We are here to win.”I do know some of the guys in the opposition team, but I’m sure they fully respect that I’ve got a job to do. I liken it to playing backyard cricket years ago against your brothers and your best mates. It was full on in the backyard, but you walked away mates. I’m sure the same will occur after the five Tests.”We’ve played some good Test cricket over the last few years. There has been the odd game where we haven’t performed, but we’re very confident, and have played very well against Australia for the last few years.”

Toon Interested In "Great" £152k-A-Week Man

Newcastle United want another "two" signings this summer, with one of them potentially being a £175,000-a-week star described as a "top professional" by his former boss, per transfers expert Graeme Bailey.

Newcastle United news – What's the latest?

Things have been going very well up on the Tyne this summer.

Following the Toon's qualification for the Champions League – the first time in over two decades – they made quite the splash in the transfer market by signing AC Milan's Sandro Tonali for a fee of around £55m.

And while it's not the most outrageous fee going – especially given the club's wealthy owners – it was more the statement of being able to lure a player of Tonali's quality away from his boyhood club and bring him to the Northeast; it was a statement.

The following two names, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento, whilst a little bit less exciting, represent some excellent squad building by Eddie Howe and will undoubtedly play a significant role in the club's ambitions to win a trophy this season.

However, for as good as those three signings are, the Magpies want more, and according to transfers expert Graeme Bailey they want at least one, if not two, more signings before the window slams shut, and one of the names may surprise some people, Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella.

He explained the situation on 90min's Talking Transfers podcast, saying:

"We still understand they want at least another one, and I have been told two. They would like a number ten but also another full-back on the left to cover.

"Kieran Tierney has been a long-term target we know that the interesting one is Marc Cucurella, who actually was linked again with Newcastle in January under Dan Ashworth. Dan Ashworth loves this player, and I think it's a case of if Cucurella wants out, and Chelsea want him out, I think Newcastle are basically saying 'oh we'll take him, but we're not going to pay his full wages and we're not going to pay you a lot of money, but if you want him out, we'll take him'.

"And I think it's something Chelsea will consider, so watch out for Tierney and Cucurella; I think it's a case of them two teams wanting the players out and Newcastle taking advantage.

How old is Marc Cucurella?

Born July 22nd, 1998, in Alella, Spain, the 25-year-old has had a rough year in West London since switching from Brighton & Hove Albion last August for a whopping £63m.

After starting 35 games for the Seagulls in the 2021/22 season and averaging a match rating of 6.94, the £175,000-a-week man started just 21 games for the Blues last term, averaging just 6.65 for his new team, per WhoScored.

That said, while he struggled at points, there were still elements to his games that were great, and some of his underlying numbers help to show that.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Spaniard sits in the top 2% of full-backs for tackles, the top 8% for attempted passes, and the top 11% for pass completion and blocks, all per 90.

marc-cucurella-newcastle-transfer-premier-league

He clearly left a good impression on his former manager Graham Potter when he was plying his trade on the south coast as the Englishman labelled him as a "top professional" when it looked like he might be leaving the club.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig couldn't have been more complimentary about the former Getafe star in the months leading up to his move to England, saying:

"Marc Cucurella is a great player. Fantastic mix of good technique, electric pace, determination and stamina."

While there will always be some risk with signing a player that has had such a down year, but if Howe and Co can get him for a relatively low fee, as Bailey seems to suggest, then it might just be a deal worth doing, as if he can get back to his Brighton best he'd be a brilliant asset to have at the club.

'My body will be at peace'

Sanjay Manjrekar: It’s nice after retirement when you can take a lap of the ground, walking. You don’t have to run anymore and train for your next game.Ashish Nehra: I will miss all this. That’s what you train for. Like I have said earlier also, the one thing which will definitely be at peace and relaxed will be my body, because I really pushed myself. Earlier, I said I could have pushed myself for another couple of months or years, who knows? But I thought it’s the right time when you’re playing. You can’t get bigger than this or better than this when you’re retiring in blue clothes.Must also be a nice feeling to bowl the last over with 60 runs to win because that doesn’t happen very often in T20 cricket.I must be one bowler who bowled the last over most number of times for India. But maybe the pressure on those occasions was different, with 6, 8, 10 or 12 to defend. Today, there was no pressure. And it’s a good feeling. Virat was on my case from the last two-three overs to bowl one over; I said I’ll bowl the last one for sure.Your journey started in 1999. You almost went through two generations of Indian players. How did the game change from the time you started playing to now? It’s a big change. I have seen the last 18-19 years. I played my first game here in 1997, which was 20 years ago. And the game has changed drastically since then. The rules have changed and so many runs are being scored. But one thing’s for sure: this team is here to stay; doesn’t matter what the rules are, because this is an amazing team. Indian cricket is in good hands for the next six to eight years. I hate comparisons. It’s very difficult to compare that generation to this generation. Earlier also we had superb players; I can’t name one or two. I have played under Sourav Ganguly, MS [Dhoni], played with Sachin [Tendulkar]. All in all, it’s been a great journey.Your most memorable performances? What about against England in Durban where you took six wickets, because that is something that I remember especially.More than the performance, I would definitely say it’s a memory. In India, they remember your memories more. I was telling Viru earlier also; Viru scored so many runs, but when it comes to Virender Sehwag, people say , 300. Or you played so much cricket, but people will always remember that Pakistan double-hundred. So that is one memory with me. You could also say the Karachi last over [in 2004], or people will remember that Ashish Nehra bowled the last over when we lost against South Africa in the [2011] World Cup. So it’s difficult to pick one performance.Sometimes you bowl 10-20 overs and pick one wicket or you don’t pick even a single wicket. But when you go back to your room, you feel today I have bowled well and I’m comfortable. At times, you pick wickets even off a full-toss or because somebody takes a brilliant catch. Those things will always be there, but as a cricketer, ultimately it’s on you when you stand in front of the mirror to realise how well you’re doing or what else you can do.In my case, with my body – I had so many injuries and so many surgeries. So many people have asked me, ‘definitely you would have liked to play more Test cricket?’ And I always say, yeah, but it’s up to you how you see it: glass half-full or half-empty. I played my last Test match 13 years back when I was 24 or 25, but that’s a part of life. In the end, I don’t think there’s anyone more fortunate than me, standing here retiring after 18-19 years at your home ground in blue clothes. I have no regrets. And look at the crowd as well. They were so happy for you when you bowled the final over as well. They were right into it, so this is a great end. Not too many people have the kind of privilege you had today.I just want to thank the crowd. They have been great supporters of Indian cricket. I have been playing on this ground for the last 20 years, they have been great supporters throughout.Well done, Ashish, and have a happy retired life. Enjoy yourself.Thank you very much. I am always happy, retired or otherwise.

£86m Bayern Munich Signing Reveals Desire To Learn German

Making a move abroad is never easy for a player in the transfer window, as they are thrown into the deep end, forced to sink or swim in their new environment.Of course, not every player survives the dramatic change of surroundings, but something tells us that Harry Kane won’t be among those to endure such struggles, given just how talented he is.Forever a Tottenham Hotspur legend, Kane finally decided it was time to call it quits in what seemed like a never-ending pursuit of silverware that looked unlikely to come in North London. With that, after a reported £86m move, a new challenge awaits at Bayern Munich, who are almost like a magnet to trophies in the Bundesliga, which should end Kane’s long wait for team success. The England captain already encountered one particular issue, however, as he attempted to complain to the referee over a decision to award RB Leipzig a penalty in Bayern’s 3-0 defeat in the German Super Cup.Kane quickly realised that he could not complain, as he doesn’t actually speak German. He has since revealed his desire to change that.

What did Harry Kane say about learning German?

As you can see in the BBC Sport video, Kane is asked in his press conference if he knows any German, to which he reveals that he only knows how to say “servus”, meaning hello or goodbye.

“I do want to learn, he said. “I want to try and fit in as much as possible. The best way of doing that is to understand the language. I mean, it will be tough. I’ve heard it’s a tough language to learn. But it’s something I’m willing to try.”

Keen to fit in, though, he spoke about his desire to learn the language, potentially handing him the opportunity to air his complaints to Bundesliga referees the next time they rule a decision against Bayern Munich.

The hilarious clip of Kane surrounding the referee, which you can see below, against Leipzig went viral, as he quickly became lost for words.

The summer arrival will hope to get his first win in a Bayern shirt next time out, too, as the Bavarians square off against Werder Bremen to get their Bundesliga season underway.

How many goals did Harry Kane score last season?

Earning a move to Bayern, Kane scored 32 goals in all competitions for Spurs last season, including 30 in the Premier League, whilst also recording five assists.

In North London, the forward did everything except win a trophy, picking up three Premier League Golden Boots, a Player of the Season award, and, most notably, becoming Spurs’ all-time top goalscorer by beating Jimmy Greaves’ record of 266 goals.

Not many can get close to the individual legacy that Kane leaves behind in the Premier League, and if that is to be it for his time in England’s top flight, he’ll comfortably go down as one of the best players that English football has ever seen.

Some may have questioned his decision to move abroad, given the fact that he’s only 47 goals away from matching Alan Shearer’s record as the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, but this is, ultimately, a player who deserves the chance at trophies. And that didn’t look likely to come at Spurs.

Journlaist "Disappointed" in Rumours About £19m Leeds Star

Having impressed in spells during his time at Leeds United, Wilfried Gnonto has been subject to significant interest this summer following the Whites' relegation from the Premier League.

Gnonto could join an exodus of Leeds players this summer, but with the transfer window coming to a close in the next few weeks, it is unclear whether the Italian international will secure an exit.

Is Gnonto leaving Leeds United?

Having seen the likes of Rodrigo, Maximilan Wober and Brenden Aaronson leave the club already this summer, Leeds supporters have watched the entire transfer window from behind the sofa so far.

The departure of some of the club's top talents is to be expected now Leeds are a Championship side, but they have recouped little in the way of transfer fees, and face an uncertain season ahead amid mass changes.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

Despite having played against Cardiff City in Leeds' Championship opener, Gnonto was not in the squad for Leeds' Carabao Cup clash with Shrewsbury, sparking debate about his future too.

Reportedly, Gnonto had asked to be omitted from the squad in a bid to pursue a Leeds exit, something that was neither confirmed or denied by manager Daniel Farke after the game who admitted Gnonto was not absent through injury.

If Gnonto had requested to be left out of the squad against Shrewsbury, then journalist Conor McGilligan revealed he would be "disappointed" in the 19-year-old, and urged Leeds not to give in to the demands of the attacker.

Speaking on the One Leeds Fan YouTube channel, he said:

"I just think Leeds have got to be really staunch with this one. We either get a good fee for him [Gnonto], a really good fee, or you keep him in the Championship, and he can go in January, and in January you might get a bigger fee for him because he might have proved himself in the Championship.

"He's going to get his head down and play. He can't refuse to play for the next four or five months, that just doesn't really happen in football. But I'm hoping this isn't the scenario because I'm a big fan of Gnonto. I think he's a good character from what you see on the outside as well, and I'd be disappointed if he's refused to play for the club."

Everton have been the club most notably linked with Gnonto, although there are likely to be other sides in the mix. According to reports, £19m may be enough to prise him away from Elland Road, with Leeds not in a particularly good bargaining position should he refuse to play for the club.

It is not uncommon in modern football for players to dig their heels in and refuse to play despite being under contract, normally in a bid to secure a move elsewhere.

Leeds supporters will be hopeful that there is some other reason Gnonto was unavailable for the Shrewsbury tie, but Farke's comments hardly inspire a great deal of confidence.

How much did Leeds sign Gnonto for?

Allowed to leave Inter's youth setup on a free transfer in 2020, Gnonto made a low-profile switch to FC Zurich in Switzerland. The forward impressed during two seasons at the club, even winning a league title, and also showcased his talents in the Italy youth teams.

Leeds pulled the trigger on a deal on deadline day last summer, bringing the speedster to Yorkshire in a £3.8m move. The 12-cap international was not an automatic starter for the Whites last season, but did shine in spells, managing two goals and four assists in 24 Premier League games.

He was often used as a substitute, stretching tired opposition defences with his pace and tireless effort, however, there were occasions where his end product let him down.

At just 19-years-old though, it's no surprise that big European sides are sitting up and taking notice of the tricky forward.

Arsenal "quite like" £75m "top-class"; Edu has his eye on him

Mikel Arteta may have previously stated that it is unlikely that “any more business will be done” but he still has interest in other players. Journalist Paul Brown told GIVEMESPORT that the Arsenal hierarchy “quite like” a high-profile player.

Could Barella be on the move?

Nicolo Barella, who has been valued at £50 million, reached the holy grail of club football with Inter Milan last year in the form of the Champions League final, where they came up just short against Pep Guardiola’s inevitable Manchester City side.

The Italian midfielder, who has been hailed as "top-class", played a key role in the aforementioned campaign as well as making a huge difference when the Nerazzurri lifted the Serie A title in 2020/21.

His form with Inter has garnered a lot of interest from across the continent, a lot of this recently stemming out of England. Not only are Arsenal keeping tabs on the 26-year-old but Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur too.

Jurgen Klopp has missed out on Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo to rivals Chelsea in the last week or so which could spur the Reds on to go hell for leather for the signature of Barella as they look to further strengthen their midfield following on from the arrivals of Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Major money issues still loom over Internazionale, as can be seen from the high-profile departures from San Siro this summer. Most notably, Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana has made the move to Manchester United and stalwart defender Milan Skriniar joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. Such issues could see the Italian side reluctantly let Barella go despite his importance to the team as the financial landscape of European football continues to struggle when compared to the Premier League.

What is Paul Brown's update?

Journalist Paul Brown dropped the latest on Arsenal’s potential pursuit of Barella to GIVEMESPORT.

“Arteta told us on Friday that he wasn't expecting any more business to be done, unless something unforeseen happens or a player leaves the club.

“So I think another midfield signing entirely depends on whether a midfielder is sold really, or if an offer comes in and Arsenal decide that it's right for them to take it.

“I don't think that they're close to signing Barella, I don't think they're pushing very hard really for that one.

“But he is someone I think they quite like and someone who's on their list. But like I say, I think any more incomings rely on outgoings now at Arsenal.”

Which player is coming to Arsenal?

A pair of wingers have been earmarked this week as players who could make a move to the Emirates before the transfer window slams shut on September 1st.

Barcelona’s Ansu Fati is one of the two in question- the Blaugrana have financial issues of their own to contend with and even though Ousmane Dembele has departed for the French capital, Fati still doesn’t seem any higher up in the pecking order.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Karou Mitoma is the other following his breakthrough season last year. The Seagulls have no need to sell their key assets following the huge fees they have received for Caicedo, MacAllister and Marc Cucurella recently.

Mitoma is a tricky winger with a clinical edge to match but the links to two left-wingers may fall on deaf ears with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard currently occupying that flank.

Arsenal: Gunners admire Marc Guehi

Arsenal could look at a late move to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, however, a report has stated that the Gunners will need to move on one specific player first.

What’s the latest Arsenal transfer news?

Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar have been productive so far this summer when it comes to new signings, with Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya all brought to north London from West Ham, Chelsea, Ajax and Brentford respectively.

In total, the Gunners have spent £200m but have brought in just £29m through player sales. However, it appears as if the club are looking to increase the latter figure by raising £100m in sales before the deadline.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, who claim that Folarin Balogun is one player who may depart with Arsenal valuing him at £50m. Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham have all registered their interest in the forward, with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Monaco also keen.

At the back, Gabriel Magalhaes, who has been left out of Arteta’s first two starting line-ups this season, has also been linked with an exit amid interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Real Madrid.

However, it is believed that the centre-back is likely to stay, although there is a chance the Gunners could allow Garbiel to leave if they can find a replacement. That is where Guehi comes in, with the report adding that a deal could be difficult to do late in the window but that Arsenal admire the player.

Marc Guehi

Who is Marc Guehi?

Guehi is an out-and-out centre-back who appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high €35m Transfermarkt valuation.

Dubbed an “absolute tank” by England U21s goalkeeper Josef Bursik, the 23-year-old began his career on the books at Chelsea and spent two seasons on loan at Swansea City. During that time, Guehi made 59 appearances in all competitions in south Wales which earned him a big-money move to Crystal Palace.

Since arriving at Selhurst Park back in 2021, the defender has turned out on 84 occasions and even captained the club in a 3-0 win against Arsenal during the 2021/22 season with the Eagles.

Over the last 12 months, as per FBref, Guehi has been a solid performer. Compared to his positional peers in the top five European leagues, he has placed highly for progressive passing distance, long passes completed, successful take-ons and passes into the final third, showing his quality on the ball. Guehi also ranks high for fouls drawn and ball recoveries, while also averaging 1.47 tackles and 1.25 interceptions per 90.

Alongside Gabriel, Arteta has William Saliba, Jakub Kiwior, Rob Holding and the injured Jurrien Timber as centre-back options, whereas right-backs Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu can also occupy central roles when needed.

Therefore, if Gabriel does move on before the deadline, a move for Guehi could be one to keep an eye on, whereas Torino’s Perr Schuurs is another who has been linked with a move to north London, so it could be a busy few days at the Emirates.
