MV Sridhar, BCCI general manager of cricket operations, has resigned from the post after failing to disclose conflict of interest. ESPNcricinfo understands Sridhar did not disclose to the BCCI that he operated a handful of clubs in Hyderabad and was reportedly getting paid by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) during his tenure with the BCCI.The BCCI had, earlier this year, asked all employees to complete a disclosure form to root out possible conflicts of interest. In addition to running the clubs in Hyderabad, Sridhar had also not informed the BCCI that his name featured in a chargesheet filed by the anti-corruption bureau against HCA officials for alleged misappropriation of funds in 2014. The case is still pending in the Hyderabad High Court.A former Hyderabad batsman, Sridhar was appointed general manager in 2013 by the N Srinivasan administration. Sridhar held an important role within the BCCI’s professional wing and was the point of contact for cricket-related activities, including looking after the needs of the Indian teams (men, women and youth cricket), scheduling and finalising both domestic and international tournaments, overseeing operations and personnel at the National Cricket Academy and attending ICC workshops as a BCCI representative. After Anil Kumble stepped down as India coach following the Champions Trophy in June, Sridhar was sent to the Caribbean to supervise the team management. ESPNcricinfo understands it is around this time the BCCI was made aware of Sridhar’s conflict. According to the , Sridhar is the president of five clubs in Hyderabad: Vijaynagar CC, Safilguda CC, Consult Colts CC, Nataraj CC and Satyam Colts CC.Rahul Johri, the BCCI chief executive officer, was asked by the Committee of Administrators to send a notice to Sridhar seeking an explanation on his role at the clubs. After not receiving a satisfactory explanation, Johri was asked to send another notice last month. It is understood that Sridhar sent his resignation this week, which was accepted by the the CoA and Johri during a meeting on Wednesday at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Sridhar was not present, and has not been to the Mumbai office for at least a week. Amitabh Choudhary, BCCI secretary, confirmed the development in a media release, stating Sridhar “has decided to move on with effect from Saturday, 30th September 2017.”

Assertion sparks Sri Lanka's Chandimal reign

Dinesh Chandimal officially stepped into the captaincy about 48 hours before the beginning of a Test, and his team very nearly lost it, against Zimbabwe. Then, as he was preparing for the biggest home series this year, against India, Chandimal contracted pneumonia, and was out for the first Test.Nominally, he was the captain, of course. He turned up to the press conferences, strode out to the toss, and made all the usual noises about needing to improve in all three areas at the presentations. But Sri Lanka, playing largely as they had under Mathews, had not begun to respond to their new leader. Against Zimbabwe and India, it had not yet begun to feel like Chandimal’s team. Now, finally, the man has been able to put a stamp on his outfit. The boldness that had once been key to his batting began to show in his leadership as well. Chandimal’s first major decision on tour was to field five bowlers in Abu Dhabi, thereby backing batsmen who had failed spectacularly against India to come good away from home. In both matches, the daring paid off. There were major batting failures as well, of course, but Sri Lanka were just good enough with the ball to emerge 2-0. Chandimal suggested the mettle with which Sri Lanka played was a quality he hoped would define his team through his captaincy.”As a captain I am looking for commitment, attitude and discipline from the players,” he said. “The selectors have also supported me to create the culture and passion we had in the past. You can tell when they are in the middle that we are really enjoying it.”The main thing is our attitude. It makes a lot of difference. And the management and selectors gave the team a lot of confidence.”Sri Lanka had to fall back on much of that confidence in the fourth innings of the Dubai Test, as Pakistan made a charge for the target. Sri Lanka’s was not the most straightforward defence of a good score. Between Pakistan collapses, in which they lost 5 wickets for 52 runs and later 5 further wickets for 23, there was a 173-run partnership through which Sri Lanka had to hold their nerve. In addition to the excellent counter-attack that Sarfraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq put together however, Sri Lanka also had to contend with a wet ball on the wicketless night session of the penultimate day, Chandimal said. It had long been thought that dew would play a role in day-night Tests at venues nearer the equator. On the fifth afternoon, however, after the field had dried, Sri Lanka began taking wickets again. Four Pakistan wickets fell to the second new ball, which was taken seven overs into play on day five.”It was tough last night. We did not expect dew will come, but last night it was there,” Chandimal said. “So it was tough for the spinners. But this morning, we had more than 120 runs to defend, so we all knew that in this session the ball will grip, as we have two experienced spinners in Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera. I knew they would do their job in this session and I am really happy with the way we played.”That Sri Lanka had worrying moments in the fourth innings at all, however, was thanks to their own poor batting, after claiming a lead of 220. Against a Pakistan attack missing Mohammad Amir, Sri Lanka collapsed to 96 all out in the space of 26 overs. Despite the eventual triumph, Chandimal bemoaned the lost opportunity to lock Pakistan out of the match much earlier than they did.”After we got a lead of 220 in the first innings, we spoke to the boys and said if we can score 100 runs for three or four wickets, then they need 350, so we can put Pakistan away. But we did not click as a batting unit in the second innings. In the end, we thought 315 was still a really good total on this track. We all know that here in Dubai, it spins more than Abu Dhabi. So credit goes to all the bowlers. They did a fantastic job throughout the series.”

Arsenal Could Secure "Top-Class" £30m Gabriel Partner

Arsenal seem all but set to announce their latest signing, as Mikel Arteta continues to bolster his squad…

How much is David Raya worth?

That's according to Football Transfers, who claim that their move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya is now a done deal.

All of the terms have been agreed between both clubs and the player, who had agreed personal terms with Gunners a while ago. The only hold-up on the switch is regarding Matt Turner going to Nottingham Forest, although David Ornstein did recently suggest that they too had reached an agreement.

The north London outfit are expected to pay between £25m and £30m for his services, as the Spaniard is set to battle with Aaron Ramsdale for that number one spot.

Football Transfers value the 27-year-old at just €11.8m (£10m), likely dragged down due to his dwindling contract. He has just one year left on his £25k-per-week deal.

Why are Arsenal signing David Raya?

Many questioned the desire behind such a switch, given how impressive Arteta's current number one has been since his 2021 move from Sheffield United. The 25-year-old – dubbed "phenomenal" by club legend David Seaman – has grown into a fine option for this division, more than capable of competing at the top level.

And yet, the Spain international emerges as a fine alternative, with all the ball-playing attributes to help tie their philosophy together and propel the squad to new heights.

That is not to suggest that his ability to keep the ball out of his net wanes either though, as he was undoubtedly one of the Premier League's finest goalkeepers last season.

In fact, he made the most saves out of any in the division by some distance, shipping just 46 goals in 38 games, the fifth-least of the 20 sides. Even Ramsdale, starring for a far greater side, only conceded three less.

It was therefore no surprise to see him lauded as “a top-class goalkeeper” by former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen (Premier League Productions, 06/03/2023, 19:35)

gabriel-magalhaes

However, it is Raya's ability with the ball at his feet that set him apart, with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp even suggesting: "The goalkeeper could have the shirt with number 10," given his proficiency in possession.

When compared to other shot-stoppers across Europe, he ranks in the top 6% for touches per 90, highlighting his desire to always be involved in the play. This is certain to aid the centre-backs, who could split into even wider areas, where they will be more free to drive into space and exert their influence on the play.

Gabriel Magalhaes would likely love such a shift in style, given how he too shines when allowed to show off his creative qualities. Last season saw him maintain a 90% pass accuracy and a 100% dribble success rate in the league, with his powerful 6 foot 3 frame hard to stop when he gets going.

The Brazilian also regularly looks to attempt to play out from the back – as he ranks in the top 22% among his European peers for progressive passes – with that knack only set to be aided by having a 'keeper behind who will regularly look to pick him out.

To imagine just how often Raya will find him in space must have Arteta excited, especially given his apparent preference to play out to the left side too – as The Athletic recently noted. His 7.18 average rating in the league last term, which made him the joint-best-performing keeper too, was bolstered by his 61% pass accuracy, which rose to 87% when passing to those in his own half, via Sofascore.

All signs point towards this innocuous signing, which has left many puzzled, actually revolutionising Gabriel's already impressive career at the Emirates.

Man United Eyeing Surprise Move For "Terrific" 21 y/o

Manchester United have been linked with a surprise move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, with the defender impressing Old Trafford scouts last season.

What’s the latest Man United transfer news?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag have been productive so far this summer despite the ongoing takeover saga involving the Glazers in the background.

Big-money moves for midfielder Mason Mount and goalkeeper Andre Onana have been finalised, whereas centre-forward Rasmus Hojlund looks set to be the next to arrive.

United submitted a player-plus-cash offer last month, however, Atalanta have been holding out for a cash-only deal, with a package worth around €70m now agreed between the two clubs.

Hojlund has already agreed on a five-year deal in Manchester and is travelling on Tuesday to undergo a medical and finalise a transfer.

After the Denmark international, it appears as if another new midfielder could be on the cards for United and Ten Hag in Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat. The 26-year-old is into the final 12 months of his contract with the Serie A side, and reports have claimed that a £26m deal is close.

Should Hojlund and Amrabat complete deals for the fees mentioned, United’s summer spend would be pushing £200m, however, it may not be the end of the club’s business.

The Daily Mail shared a transfer round-up on Monday and looked at potential defensive additions at Old Trafford. They name-checked Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo as an option but said Branthwaite is a surprise name on the Old Trafford radar.

“Everton's left-sided centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who impressed scouts while on loan at PSV Eindhoven last season, is a surprise name that has been floated.”

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Who is Jarrad Branthwaite?

Branthwaite is 21 years of age and is a left-footed centre-back who appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €10m Transfermarkt valuation. He made the move to Everton back in 2020 from Carlisle United and has made 13 senior appearances for the Toffees, scoring once.

During his time on Merseyside, Branthwaite has been sent out on loan to Blackburn Rovers in the Championship and was with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven last season, turning out on 36 occasions.

The defender has been hailed as a ‘terrific footballer’ by his former Carlisle United manager Steven Pressley, who believes he will go on to play for England.

“I told people he was a future England international. Not once from when I gave him his debut did I ever consider leaving him out again, because I felt his performances had been so strong.

“The truth is, I think he has got everything. He can pass the ball almost equally as good with both feet. He’s a terrific footballer.

“And If he continues to develop, then, without doubt, he can be an England player.”

The Red Devils could well be in the market for a new centre-back before the window closes, should someone like Harry Maguire leave amid interest from West Ham.

Branthwaite may not be viewed as an immediate starter at Old Trafford, but over time, he may go from strength to strength and eventually replace one of United’s senior defenders, and by the looks of things, a transfer could be one to keep an eye on.

Australia battle through after Root's toss gamble

England managed to take four wickets – including that of Steven Smith for 40 – but Australia had nevertheless built a solid platform after Joe Root’s decision to put them in

The Report by Brydon Coverdale02-Dec-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIt is a bold captain who sends the opposition in to bat in any Test match, let alone in the Ashes, let alone away from home, let alone on an obviously good batting pitch. But that was the decision Joe Root made on the first day in Adelaide; by stumps it still looked a bold call, and not necessarily a good one. Australia were not exactly unscathed by the close of play, but at 4 for 209, neither were they as scathed as Root had intended. Two recent field-first decisions by England captains in Australia stick out in the memory. When Nasser Hussain sent Steve Waugh’s men in at the Gabba in 2002, he knew his mistake by the fifth over of the match. Australia closed the first day at 2 for 364. But at the MCG in 2010, Andrew Strauss was rewarded for his brave move when Australia were skittled for 98, and by stumps England were 0 for 157 in reply. Root’s call falls somewhere in between. There was some swing and seam movement early in the day, but Australia’s openers left well and were untroubled during a rain-affected opening session. Under lights in the evening, the ball again moved around, and here Australia lost two key wickets: Usman Khawaja edged behind to a James Anderson ball that moved away, and Steven Smith played on to the debutant fast bowler Craig Overton.Such was Smith’s impact at the Gabba that Root might almost consider getting Smith for 40 to be worth the bowl-first decision in itself. As Root noted in the lead-up to this Test, take out Smith’s score at the Gabba and Australia lost the rest of their wickets for less than 200. Still, England failed to run through the Australians after snaring Khawaja and Smith, and by stumps Peter Handscomb was well set on 36 and Shaun Marsh had 20.Australia were hoping that one of those two men would cash in, for David Warner (47), Smith (40) and Khawaja (53) had all made strong starts that did not evolve into great innings. No partnership lasted 20 overs, and England continued to chip away through the rain-shortened day.In fact, there was much chippy behaviour from both sides, not surprisingly after the Jonny Bairstow headbutt saga of the Gabba Test. Smith was welcomed to the crease by an aggressive spell from Stuart Broad that included many exchanges of words, and later Smith found himself involved in a petty turf-war with Anderson, who was fielding at catching mid-on to Handscomb, very close to where Smith was stationed as non-striker.In the end, it was Overton who did the important job of actually removing Smith, and not just annoying him. Overton found the perfect length to trouble Australia’s captain, who was caught in no-man’s-land between playing forward and back, and inside-edged onto his stumps. Picked in place of Jake Ball, Overton justified his inclusion with that one delivery.Earlier in the final session, Anderson had stopped Khawaja turning his start into something more when he moved one away just enough to be edged to gully, where James Vince took a sharp catch moving to his left. Khawaja had failed to add to his dinner score, and his departure must have relieved Mark Stoneman, who had dropped a gettable chance in the deep when Khawaja had 44 and top-edged a hook off Chris Woakes.Khawaja was not the first Australian to flirt outside the off stump when he felt set: Warner fell for 47 when he dabbled at Woakes and was caught behind by Bairstow. Warner was frustrated at himself after working patiently for 102 deliveries, and he wasn’t the only Australian left frustrated by David Warner. After the opening session was reduced to 13.5 overs due to persistent rain, it took only four balls for England to strike upon the resumption. Warner pushed Broad towards cover and a misfield from Moeen Ali resulted in Warner calling Cameron Bancroft through for a single. But Warner changed his mind and Bancroft was caught short at the non-striker’s end by a direct hit from Woakes. Perhaps Bancroft’s heavy head slowed down his turning speed. It was just the boost England needed after few balls threatened the stumps in the opening session. Still, Root had to find a way through the rest of the top order and it was therefore a little surprising, given Khawaja’s struggles against spin, that he waited until Khawaja had faced 26 balls before introducing Moeen. By then, Khawaja was set, and he had no qualms about advancing and lofting Moeen over mid-off.By the time Khawaja had the second half-century of his Ashes career, and stood alongside Smith at the crease on 2 for 139, Root’s gamble at the toss was looking poor. At least when stumps arrived, Root was well out of Hussain territory.

Liverpool "have come back in" with a Lavia bid yet to be reported on

There seems to have been another development invloving Liverpool and Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, according to Ben Jacobs.

The Belgian is the Reds top transfer target at this point in the window.

What is the latest news regarding Romeo Lavia?

The midfielder looks to be edging closer to a St Mary's exit this summer.

The player didn't feature in the Saints opening Championship game, instead being an unused substitute as the South Coast side beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1, whilst the Belgian international wasn't a part of the squad that lost 3-1 to Gillingham in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The player is a key target of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, who are light in the defensive midfield department after selling both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Al Ettifaq and Al Ittihad respectively, leaving the side with just young Stefan Bajcetic for the position, who is currently recovering from a major injury that not only ended his 2022/23 season prematurely, but has also forced him to miss every single one of the Reds pre-season outings.

Southampton central midfielder Romeo Lavia.

According to journalist Paul Joyce, the Reds have submitted three offers for the midfielder this window; the first one being £34m plus £4m add ons, the second being £41m and the third being £45m. All the offers were rejected by the Championship side as they hold out for their £50m asking price they set at the beginning of the summer, which they believe that the Reds will meet eventually according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Liverpool have reportedly been unwilling to match that asking price throughout the summer, and are considering alternative targets, with one such target being Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade.

Speaking to Redmen TV, journalist Jacobs revealed that his understanding is that the Reds have submitted their fourth improved offer, with it "very known now" that Lavia wants to make the switch to Anfield this summer.

He said: "My understanding is that perhaps the media cycle has been a little bit behind on this one which is normal when you have a rejected bid, it tends to suffice and sometimes there is an assumption that the bid went in at the same time as the rejection, and my understanding is that since that third rejected bid, Liverpool have come back in with an improved offer, and naturally because the feeling is that Lavia and 50 million will do the deal and the rejected bid was at 45, there's obviously not much more needed if Liverpool want to get this one over the line, and if they meet the valuation that Southampton are looking for, it is very well known that Lavia wants the move."

Would Lavia be the right signing for Liverpool?

Lavia would be a really strong pickup for the Merseyside club.

Throughout pre-season, Liverpool have employed a similar system to the one the side used in the final games of last season, and have added two new midfielders in the forms of Alexis Mac Allister arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion for a fee in the region of £35m and Dominik Szoboszlai from German outfit RB Leipzig for a fee in the region of £60m. As it stands, only a left-sided defensive midfielder to partner Trent Alexander-Arnold is needed, with the club playing multiple players in that role throughout the past month, and that is where Lavia would shine.

The 19-year-old would most likely be tasked with being the defensive stalwart for Liverpool which would allow their more attack-minded players the opportunity to get forward and showcase their talents, and that aspect of his game is something he excels at.

Twitter user @SawkurGod posted a graph showcasing the U24 best duel winners in the Premier League last season, and Lavia ranked with some elite company at the very top alongside Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, both players who could command fees in excess of £100m this summer according to reports.

Being Liverpool's starting defensive midfielder could be a lot of pressure on the Belgian, however, he showed last season that he can perform at a high Premier League level in his 29 league appearances, earning praise from legendary Premier League midfielder Paul Scholes, who stated: "I think he is a player with so much potential and he could potentially go back, but he has settled in so well. He has got a pass in his locker and he is big and strong and likes to defend."

Tottenham: Big Club Eye "Outstanding" Signing From Spurs

Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan are eyeing a late move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga and there has been initial contact.

Who will leave Spurs?

There are numerous candidates up for the Spurs chopping block with defender Joe Rodon now on his way to Leeds United.

Ange Postecoglou could also see the likes of Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic, Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon and Tanguy Ndombele leave the club after Spurs confirmed Harry Winks' exit to Leicester last month (The Telegraph).

Lucas Moura departed Tottenham upon the expiry of his contract as well, and as Spurs look to free up space for more signings, supporters can certainly expect more to follow him.

Postecoglou, speaking to the press recently, admitted that certain squad members will be looking for new opportunities.

“It's fair to say our squad is too big at the moment," explained the Spurs head coach.

"There are guys who will want to explore opportunities elsewhere. I'm not involved in that. I think we'll see some movement out in the coming weeks.”

Tanganga, who found game time difficult to come by under Antonio Conte last season, had been attracting serious attention in January – with as many as seven clubs showing a "huge interest" in the homegrown talent.

The 24-year-old was blocked from leaving by Conte in the winter due to a lack of Spurs squad depth, but according to Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, a move away for Tanganga could be back on.

The reporter, writing on his personal website, says Italian giants Inter Milan have made contact for the defender as they seek to bolster Simone Inzaghi's options.

Tottenham are now open to loaning Tanganga with an option to buy, something which has seemingly alerted Inter, as they're targeting a move.

Indeed, the Englishman is thought to be on their transfer list, and it will be interesting to see if Tanganga can finally agree a transfer elsewhere in pursuit of game time.

How good is Japhet Tanganga?

japhet-tanganga-tottenham-hotspur-transfer

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking to Football Insider when Tanganga was linked with a move to AC Milan, says the player can be "outstanding" on his day – thought he has a habit of drawing silly fouls.

“I’ve watched him a few times and sometimes he can be outstanding but sometimes he can be done in behind and make silly fouls.

“Someone like him, at his age, needs to be playing regularly. You don’t want to be a squad player when you are young.

“If he can get that move to AC Milan, I’m sure he’d snap their fingers off. It would be unreal. [Fikayo] Tomori’s there. A lot more players are maybe going to try the Italian league.”

Meanwhile, Conte also singled out Tanganga for praise after a performance in late 2021.

“Do not forget that I think he (Tanganga) played a really good game as the third central defender on the left," said Conte

"I think he made a great performance and I am happy. I am happy for him because Japhet is a player that has a great sense of belonging."
