Boehly Made A Big £60m Mistake At Chelsea

Chelsea were an extremely busy force in the transfer market last summer, bringing in multiple new additions in what seemed to be a new dawn for everyone involved at Stamford Bridge under new ownership.

One of their most high-profile signings was Marc Cucurella, who arrived to much excitement from Blues' supporters for a fee in excess of £60 million, as per Sky Sports.

Nevertheless, he, like many of Chelsea's players have flattered to deceive this campaign, leaving the west London-based outfit sitting 11th in the Premier League table with just three fixtures left to play alongside being dumped out of all cup competitions.

Undoubtedly, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has a lot to answer for this season and the American businessman may live to regret making such an expensive signing with little to show for it in return.

What's the latest news involving Marc Cucurella?

Cucurella has come under fire for his performances at Chelsea this season and was criticised by talkSPORT pundit Jamie O'Hara after the Blues' Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie against Real Madrid, as the pundit said: “Cucurella is a disgrace, absolutely killed Chelsea.”

Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill also delivered a crushing verdict of the Spaniard in early February and questioned his willingness to try and be progressive on the ball, writing: "Cucurella looks like a footballer devoid of confidence, as if he’s too scared to take the risky option.

One compilation of his ‘highlights’ against West Ham showed a series of moments when, instead of passing to Mykhailo Mudryk on the left wing, he chose safety."

In his time at Stamford Bridge, Cucurella has been an underwhelming presence on the left-hand side of defence, making 33 appearances in all competitions and registering two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella.

WhoScored notes that Cucurella has earned an average match rating of 6.55/10 for his exploits on the pitch this term, ranking him 13th out of Chelsea's 32-man squad in terms of the consistency of his displays, demonstrating room for improvement.

Gill's assessment of Cucurella not being brave enough on the ball also stands up to scrutiny, as FBRef details that the 24-year-old ranks in the bottom 10% of full-backs across Europe's top five divisions for successful take-ons completed over the last 365 days, as he has managed just 0.29 per 90 minutes.

Former Chelsea ace Frank Leboeuf even slammed the transfer as he called it a "crazy" decision.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Paul Brown thinks that Boehly and company may have paid over the odds to sign Cucurella.

Brown told FFC: "I think the only regret that Chelsea should have over Cucurella is the price they paid. I think there's clearly a good player there who still has time to make an impact for the club, but it's clear they just paid a figure that was way above his market value to get him. I mean, I think everyone went a bit wide-eyed at the time when those figures came out."

Of course, Cucurella still has time to turn things round at the Blues and can be an exceptionally effective player when on form. As per The Evening Standard, UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel praised him in the aftermath of Chelsea's 2-0 triumph in the Champions League last-16, stating: “Cucurella was fantastic, claiming numerous turnovers in the first half and reading the game intelligently as well as showing aerial strength and an accuracy of distribution which underpinned the victory for Chelsea.”

Nevertheless, a return to consistency needs to be a priority for the former Seagulls ace heading into next campaign as Chelsea look to wash away their memory of a dismal 2022/23.

Man Utd’s "Poor" £200k-p/w Almost Cost Ten Hag

Manchester United took a giant stride toward securing a top-four finish with victory away to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, with an early stunner from Casemiro ultimately proving enough for Erik ten Hag's men.

While United have been made to wait in their bid to seal Champions League qualification following Liverpool's late equaliser away to Aston Villa, the Red Devils now only need a point from their remaining two Premier League games to clinch their place in Europe's elite competition.

That vital win over the Cherries was certainly not plain sailing, however, with Ten Hag likely to be concerned at his side's inability to go on and get a killer, second goal which would have made life far easier.

Those attacking woes were laid bare by the shortcomings of £73m man, Jadon Sancho, with the struggling asset having now gone five league games without providing a goal or an assist, despite showing "glimpses" against Gary O'Neil's men – as per journalist Josh Bunting.

The former Borussia Dortmund man was perhaps unsurprisingly hooked late on in favour of Alejandro Garnacho, albeit with the Englishman having still laid on two key passes in his 72-minute outing, while also completing all four of his attempted dribbles as well as winning 100% of his ground duels.

That respectable record – which earned the 23-year-old a solid 7.2 match rating, as per Sofascore – ensured that he still enjoyed a better day than teammate Antony on the opposite flank, with the Brazilian trickster enduring a truly frustrating outing.

How did Antony perform against Bournemouth?

While the former Ajax ace did look sharp in last weekend's win over Wolverhampton Wanderers – having registered an assist for Anthony Martial's opener – the wide man was unable to maintain that momentum this time around, with his 6.9 match rating the lowest of any starting United player, according to Sofascore.

As GOAL's Richard Martin stated, the 23-year-old 'looked confident but once more had very little end product', having lost possession on 11 occasions from his 68 touches, while also laying on just one key pass.

Man United's Antony

The mercurial left-footer was also criticised for being too 'casual' in the second half – in the words of Manchester Evening News journalist, Samuel Luckhurst – while also being branded "really poor" by The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell after losing possession in the build-up to a chance for David Brooks just after the interval.

That "blasé attitude" – as per Whitwell – may well have irked Ten Hag with the game having still been firmly in the balance, with it fair to say that the £200k-per-week man's perceived lack of effort could have potentially cost the Red Devils .

As it proved, the Old Trafford outfit held on to ensure that they are now all but certain of a place in the top four, with Antony needing to count himself lucky that his errant performance didn't impact proceedings too greatly.

Straight balls part of Craig's spin roster for India

Overseas spinners coming to Indian shores might fantasise of the ball turning square, but not New Zealand’s Mark Craig.”The one that goes straight is probably just as invaluable as the ball that turns. I think over here, at times it can probably do too much, so the key is trying and find a way for the ball to slide on straight,” he said a week out from the first of three Tests in Kanpur.Craig is yet to play a first-class match in the country and has not played Test cricket in seven months after a beamer struck his hand while playing for his state side Otago. He has used his time away from the game to make technical changes, he said. All of them pertained to his bowling action, which a spinner relies on quite heavily.”I was getting pretty flat with the shoulders, trying to get my shoulders back to 45 [degrees, to be taller at the crease] when I load up,” Craig said. “Not getting too long in my delivery stride and just closing off with the feet. So just three things that I can always go back and look on now. And yeah, happy with the changes I’ve made.”His tweaks have come in the wake of two dismal series against Australia last season – seven innings, 137.2 overs and only 10 wickets.Craig said New Zealand have observed India’s spinners to gain insight on how to bowl in subcontinent conditions. R Ashwin was recently called the best in the world by his coach Anil Kumble, and Ravindra Jadeja picked up 10 wickets in a match in the final of the Duleep Trophy – the first-class tournament that kicked off India’s domestic calendar in 2016-17.”They’re probably different spinners to our boys, but they’re world class,” Craig said. “They tend to play around a little bit with, I suppose, undercutting the ball slightly so they get that ball to skid and one to grab. We’ve done a bit of work at watching how they bowl and at the same time we’ve got to do what we do.”New Zealand have three spinners in their squad. Craig bowls offspin, Ish Sodhi, legspin, and Mitchell Santner, left-arm spin. Craig understood that there would be a lot expected of them but was mindful of not allowing that pressure to push them into trying too much.”There’s a lot of expectation that falls on you [when] you go into spinning conditions, I think it’s key to not try and reinvent the wheel. Just keep doing what our boys have been doing and let the wicket do it for us.”Those boys have played [in India] a bit more than I have. So [I am] sitting next to them on the bus and talking shop so to speak, just about the paces to bowl and how the wickets generally are like and things like that. We’re always talking, pretty tight unit. The chance that a New Zealand side might play three spinners in a Test, if it goes ahead, is pretty exciting.”Craig hasn’t ignored his batting. He has three Test fifties and is known for an ability to hang around and frustrate bowlers. “Just trying to nurdle it,” he joked in response to a question on whether he’s tried to hit his team-mates for sixes. “Keep it on the ground mate, bat longer.”The New Zealanders play their first match of the tour, a three-day game against a Mumbai XI in Delhi, on Friday.

CBS Reporter Drops Exciting Striker Hint At Man United

Manchester United will need to pay in excess of £60 million this summer if they are to land a new striker at Old Trafford, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest transfer news on Manchester United's striker search?

Manchester United have been linked with several strikers this summer as they look to add an elite forward to their attack, with Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane being among the leading names, though the Red Devils will need to part with around £100 million to land the England international, as per The Daily Mail.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is also a target for Erik Ten Hag heading into the forthcoming transfer window alongside Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund and Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani, according to The Manchester Evening News.

As per The Mirror, Benfica frontman Goncalo Ramos is also highly thought of at Manchester United and is seen as a 'brilliant prospect' for the future by Old Trafford chiefs.

Calciomercato claimed in March that Juventus hitman Dusan Vlahovic is also being considered by the Red Devils, providing an intriguing mix of strikers that Manchester United could choose to pursue once the window opens for business.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that Manchester United may have to shell out a significant sum of cash to be in with a chance of landing any of these reported targets.

Jacobs told FFC: "I think the last point I would make is that Manchester United are going to have to balance lots of priorities here. If they, for example, want a traditional number nine striker, which is a key and urgent priority position, should that opportunity present itself early in the window. Whether that is for a Kane, which we know is going to be difficult, or Victor Osimhen, which we know is going to be expensive, Gonzalo Ramos, which again will come with a big price tag or a Dusan Vlahovic, which there's a real possibility he'll leave, but again, it's going to be well in excess of £60 million at a minimum."

Who is the most likely target to end up at Manchester United?

All strikers who have been linked with Manchester United will prove to be difficult to attain; however, this may well become an easier task to manage financially once the ownership situation at Old Trafford has been rectified.

One thing we do know is that Red Devils boss Ten Hag is said to be 'obsessed' with Tottenham icon Kane and will act early as they try to secure a deal to entice the 29-year-old away from N17, as per The Guardian.

Tottenham Hotspur'sHarryKane

It is easy to see why Kane is so highly rated by the Manchester United boss, given that he managed to notch 32 goals and five assists from 49 appearances in 2022/23 for a struggling Spurs side, as per Transfermarkt.

Kane may prove to be one of the more tricky deals to complete, though the fact that he is desperate to become the all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League may just give Manchester United enough leg room to seriously tempt him into considering his future this summer.

West Ham Could Sign Joelinton 2.0 In £40m Sensation

West Ham United are in the race for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher as the club prepares for the departure of Declan Rice.

What’s the latest on Conor Gallagher to West Ham?

According to talkSPORT, the Irons, alongside Newcastle and Crystal Palace have been alerted to the possibility of signing the £40m-rated Englishman.

The report details that the 23-year-old’s sale may be sanctioned as the 2021 Champions League winners attempt to raise funds to cut the size of the squad and finance Mauricio Pochettino’s summer rebuild.

The outlet also revealed that the west London recruitment team believes that British players will generate the most revenue and Gallagher hasn’t justified his inclusion for next season due to his inconsistency.

What would Conor Gallagher bring to West Ham?

The £50k-per-week man’s season at Chelsea had drawn a mixed reaction from the fan base.

On one hand, the engine has made the second most appearances (45) in all competitions for the club this season, showing he is a trustworthy and popular asset.

Conversely, he has also been accused of not being up to standard, with Darren Bent describing the player as looking like a "fish out of water" at Stamford Bridge.

conor-gallagher-chelsea-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

However, although he has endured a tricky campaign, he has still shown he has top-flight pedigree outside of Chelsea.

For the 2021/22 season, the Epsom-born talent was loaned to Palace and tremendously excelled at Selhurst Park.

In 34 Premier League appearances, the six-cap international recorded 11 goal contributions and the highest average rating (7.09) in the squad, as per WhoScored.

This notified his parent club of his quality and the former Swansea man has been regularly picked by Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Frank Lampard since.

In a more settled and less-pressurised environment, Gallagher can perform and a move to the London Stadium could reignite his career.

This signing would mean that David Moyes could unearth his own Joelinton – an aggressive, relentless, and energetic box-to-box midfielder.

Indeed, as per FBref, the two are the most alike when it comes to every player across Europe's top five leagues.

That is showcased by the fact that both the aforementioned men rank within the top 9% in Europe’s top five leagues among their positional peers for blocks per 90, the highest 3% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, and the best 19% for progressive carries per 90.

This range of attributes displays both their defensive and offensive capabilities, and Gallagher could be an integral cog of the West Ham side across the pitch.

Described as “fantastic” by Potter, his commitment, work rate and willingness to run cannot be questioned, and in a similar setting to what he experienced in south London, he could be set to thrive again.

Inoshi Priyadharshani and Imalka Mendis have earned call-ups to Sri Lanka Women’s ODI squad, while there were recalls for Chamari Polgampola and Inoka Ranaweera for the upcoming four-match home series against Australia Women.Priyadharshani played two T20 internationals for Sri Lanka Women, both in 2014 in a home series against South Africa Women, and has been out of the side since. Mendis is uncapped at the international level. Both Polgampola and Ranaweera last played an ODI against New Zealand Women in November last year, and were left out for their tour of India earlier this year – Sri Lanka’s last ODI assignment. Polgampola, who bats left-handed and can also bowl right-arm medium pacer, has 776 runs at an average of 13.85 and 32 wickets in 59 ODIs. Ranaweera, a left-arm spinner, has played 23 ODIs in which she has picked up 24 wickets.Chamari Atapattu will lead the squad, while Prasadini Weerakody has been named her deputy. Atapattu last led in an ODI during the New Zealand tour when Shashikala Siriwardene injured her thumb. Siriwardene returned to lead in the away series against India and was also named captain for the Women’s World T20 in India earlier this year. However, a hamstring injury after their first match of the tournament ruled Siriwardene out of it – with the reins passing to Atapattu then too – and has kept her out of action since.Sri Lanka and Australia will play four ODIs with Women’s Championship points up for grabs in three of the games. The ODIs will be followed by a lone T20I. The first ODI will take place on Sunday in Dambulla.

South Africa mull all-pace attack for Australia Tests

South Africa have left for Australia with two rookie spinners in their squad, but Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj could end up being tourists on the three-Test tour. With five specialist seamers to choose from, and JP Duminy’s offspin, South Africa have plenty of other options, and an all-pace attack is not out of the question, especially in the first and third Tests.”The big decision will be whether to play four seamers or [three seamers and] a spinner,” Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach, said. “We will have to assess how guys go in the warm-up games, what type of spinner we are looking for in those conditions, if we do play a spinner, and what the best four seamers will be in those conditions, if we play four seamers.”Although the WACA is not the pacemen’s paradise it once was, and South Africa will be wary not to repeat what they did in anticipation of a green mamba in Brisbane in 2012 when they picked four quicks and Duminy (who then got injured), it remains an option to give all of Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada and fit-again Morne Morkel a go, especially as it will be a rare opportunity for them to play together. Morkel sat out the New Zealand Tests with a back injury, but confirmed his return to fitness by turning out for the Titans against the Warriors last week. But with the new transformation targets, the return of Steyn and Philander, and the emergence of Rabada, he may not get into the team unless South Africa play four quicks. And that means Kyle Abbott will be lucky to be considered at all.The other venue where South Africa will consider an all-pace attack is Adelaide because that is where they play their first day-night Test. On the evidence of last summer’s match between Australia and New Zealand, and what Domingo saw of the ongoing Pakistan-West Indies match, he expects the fixture to be headlined by bowlers. “It definitely looked like it was swinging quite a bit in Dubai,” he said – South Africa’s departure press conference was done before legspinner Devendra Bishoo set about dismantling Pakistan. The feedback Domingo received from members of South Africa’s A squad, which included opening batsmen Stephen Cook and Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma, who used the pink ball during their unofficial Test series in Australia in August, also suggested there is an advantage for bowlers.”A lot of our players played with the pink ball on the South Africa A tour, and they have given us feedback. I don’t know if it’s going to last five days. I think they’ve got to leave some grass on the wicket because the pink ball has got a history of scuffing up, so they try and prolong the quality of the pink ball while leaving some grass on the wicket. We’ve also heard that it is very tough to bat under lights and the ball does nip around,” Domingo said. “I don’t know how many pink-ball Tests there are going to be, but I know most of the players are really excited by it, especially the bowlers. The bowlers are licking their lips. The batters might not be that excited, but the bowlers are looking forward to it.”South Africa have ample opportunity to see if the bowlers will benefit as much as has been hinted at in their warm-up matches. Their first practice game will take place under lights in Adelaide and they have a second in Melbourne ahead of the third Test. As an added bonus, they also have another two-day games ahead of the first Test to prepare themselves thoroughly.Among the things South will concentrate on in the regular red-ball game is which of their spinners to play, if they are to pick one. They have already noted that Australia struggled to pick Shamsi in the ODIs and may want his surprise factor. However, Maharaj is hot off a 13-wicket haul in the opening domestic first-class match of the season. South Africa have dispensed with the idea of an offspinner, given “Australia, generally, hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for offspinners”, according to Domingo. “The Australian line-up does have a lot of right-handers – Steven Smith, Joe Burns, Adam Voges, Peter Neville, so quite a lot.” And if South Africa want someone to turn the ball away from the left-handers, Duminy, who has made public his desire to contribute more with the ball, will be looked at.The spotlight on their own attack does not mean South Africa have forgotten about the opposition’s. Australia’s young seamers were the focus of the recently-completed ODI series, where they failed to trouble South Africa’s line-up and did not manage to bowl them out once. But they will be replaced by the big guns in the Tests. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will be back, and du Plessis indicated South Africa are ready for the challenge.”Starc is a huge bowler for them, but, statistically, he has been more an asset in one-day cricket than in the Test team. There will just be a little bit of preparation for us with left-arm quick again,” du Plessis said. “He is one of those guys who can crank it up and get it close to 150 and also reverse swing. Josh Hazlewood is a pretty standard bowler, he just hits good lengths all day, similar to someone like Dale and Vern.”South Africa know the difference players of the quality of Steyn and Philander can make to the team, after struggling through most of the previous summer without them, and so will know how much Starc and Hazlewood will buoy Australia. And, so, they also know how much they will have to do to get the better of Australia in their backyard.

Hosts USA dominate Bermuda in Division Four opener

‘This win will help us improve’ – Fahad Babar

Legspinner Timil Patel’s five-wicket haul and half-centuries from opening batsmen Steven Taylor and Fahad Babar helped tournament favourites USA romp past Bermuda by eight wickets at Severn Cricket Field on the opening day of WCL Division Four in Los Angeles on Saturday.Timil took 1 for 18 in his initial four-over spell, before returning in the 43rd over with a double-wicket maiden that reduced Bermuda to 163 for 7. Timil induced a return catch from tailender Jordan DeSilva in the 47th over and his fifth wicket was Dion Stovell who sent a catch to long-on, having scored 56. Stovell was Bermuda’s last wicket to fall as they were bowled out for 201 after opting to bat first.Timil’s 5 for 29 made up for a sloppy display earlier in the innings from the rest of the bowling attack, as USA conceded 33 extras, 29 of them wides. On three occasions, a USA bowler sent a wide down the leg side that beat wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson to go for five runs, and by the 13th over they had already conceded 20 wides.Medium-pacer Jessy Singh helped USA regain focus in the field with an outstanding spell, and finished with match figures of 2 for 40. He bowled yorkers consistently, including one to remove Bermuda captain Oliver Pitcher for 30, which broke a 55-run second-wicket stand with Tre Manders in the 18th over. Four overs later, Jessy got Manders to drive at a full and wide ball and the edge was brilliantly caught by a leaping Dodson behind the stumps for 19. Bermuda continued to find runs in the middle overs though, before Timil’s intervention stopped them from launching to a bigger total.Taylor and Babar got USA’s chase of 202 off to a rousing start, racing to 74 for 0 in the Powerplay. Taylor, USA’s captain, brought up his half-century in 35 balls, slog-sweeping a six over square leg off Stovell’s offspin to bring up the landmark in the 10th over. Taylor reserved his harshest treatment for Stovell, striking six of his nine fours off of him, including three in the space of five balls in the eighth over. He was eventually caught on the square-leg boundary for 56, flicking a full delivery from first-change seamer Cejay Outerbridge.Akeem Dodson’s one-handed leaping catch helped USA gain momentum in the field•Peter Della PennaBabar added 95 for the second with Ravi Timbawala as USA cruised against a Bermuda attack that was without their best bowler, left-arm spinner Delray Rawlins, who is missing the first two games of the tournament while training in England with the England Under-19 squad. The stand was eventually broken when Timbawala took on Kamau Leverock’s arm from inside the circle at midwicket and a direct hit ended his innings for 41.Babar saw USA the rest of the way, finishing unbeaten on 70, the fifth time he went past 50 for USA in ten career one-day innings. Timroy Allen, promoted to No. 4 to boost USA’s net run rate, struck a free hit for six over long-on and then followed it with a four over midwicket to clinch victory for USA with 17.2 overs to spare.Denmark got off to a strong start with a 114-run win over Italy at the Wright Cricket Field. Aftab Ahmed and Freddie Klokker gave Denmark a brisk start, adding 44 in six overs after being sent in to bat. However, Charanjeet Singh and Luis di Giglio dismissed both batsmen in the Powerplay, to leave the score at 60 for 2 in the 10th over.Hamid Shah and Zameer Khan steadied Denmark with a 53-run stand for the third wicket, with Hamid producing a top score of 58. A middle-overs burst of three wickets from Carl Sandri left Denmark at 140 for 6 in the 38th over and swung the momentum Italy’s way. Hamid, however, teamed up with Yasir Iqbal (44) for a crucial 70-run partnership before both men fell in the final over to Gian Meade as Denmark ended on 214 for 8.Former England Test bowler Amjad Khan ripped through Italy’s top order with three wickets in his opening spell, as the batting side stumbled to 23 for 5 in nine overs and were eventually bowled out for 100. Sandri struck a face-saving 59 off 37 balls at No. 7, before becoming the final wicket to fall as Italy’s innings ended in only 21.1 overs. Offspinner Bashir Shah rolled through the Italy tail to claim the best figures for Denmark with 4 for 18.Amjad Khan helped Denmark rip through Italy’s top order on the way to a 114-run win•Peter Della PennaOman avenged their defeat in May’s Division Five final with a six-wicket win over Jersey at Wong Cricket Field. Oman opted to field and their spin attack stifled Jersey, limiting their scoring rate to leave at 120 for 5 in the 40th over.
