Magnificent Moeen punishes Pakistan for lapses

Moeen Ali made his third Test hundred and his second match-defining score in as many innings to rescue his side from a familiar top-order collapse in the fourth Investec Test.

The Report by Andrew Miller11-Aug-2016Pakistan 3 for 1 (Azhar 0*, Yasir 0*) trail England 328 (Moeen 108, Bairstow 55, Sohail 5-68) by 325 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMoeen Ali once again demonstrated the power that resides in England’s allrounder-laden middle order as he stroked his way to a brilliant counterattacking 108 – his third Test hundred and his second match-defining score in as many innings – to rescue his side from a familiar top-order collapse in the fourth Investec Test.By the close of the opening day’s play at the Kia Oval, England had seized control of a contest that could yet propel them to the top of the world Test rankings, if results elsewhere go their way. Left with three overs in which to go for broke before the close, Stuart Broad prised out Pakistan’s most obdurate find of the tour, Sami Aslam, lbw for 3, as England inched closer to their coveted clean sweep of series wins against all Test opponents. But, with Wahab Riaz back in the Pakistan side and restored to the fire-breathing hostility that had secured the spoils in the last Test series between these sides before Christmas, they had been required once again to take the scenic route to the ascendancy. The first delivery of Moeen’s innings summed up the challenge that England faced shortly after lunch, as he arrived at the crease to join Jonny Bairstow with his side floundering on 110 for 5 after winning the toss under overcast skies, and on a livid green pitch that looked more threatening than it actually turned out to be.Wahab – with three wickets, one drop and a no-ball reprieve already to his name in the first eight-and-a-half overs of a typically vigorous onslaught – greeted the incoming Moeen with a scorching bouncer that tailed into the left-hander and sconed him so hard on the badge of his helmet that it rebounded clean into the hands of backward point.Pakistan, at this stage, were swarming as only they can when that whiff of cordite hits their nostrils. But Moeen’s refusal to be flustered is a trademark of his game, and in the course of two vital and urgently-paced stands – 93 for the sixth wicket with Bairstow and 79 with England’s man of the moment, Chris Woakes – he first shored up the foundations of England’s innings before taking the game away in the final session from a tiring Pakistan attack.Sohail Khan once again emerged as Pakistan’s stand-out wicket-taker, with 5 for 68 in 20.4 toiling overs, but Pakistan’s fielders were unable to match the application of their bowlers. Mohammad Amir proved especially luckless in his best spell since his return to Test cricket as a genuine opportunity to roll England aside inside two sessions hit the turf with a thud.Hales decision under scrutiny

Two England players retweeted footage that appeared to cast doubt on the veracity of the catch that dismissed Alex Hales. Hales looked furious after he was adjudged to have been caught by Yasir Shah at mid-wicket. While TV replays appeared inconclusive, some felt that still pictures suggested the ball may have bounced.
Certainly Hales’ Nottinghamshire team-mate Stuart Broad seemed to think Hales had been unfortunate. He tweeted: “Replays are unclear? You don’t believe that do you?” Hales, however, seemed to accept the umpires’ decision had been far from straightforward, tweeting a pixelated picture with the comment: “Bit blurry to be fair.”

Despite the excellence of their contributions, both Moeen and Bairstow were the beneficiaries of key reprieves early in their innings that Pakistan will be sure to rue as this contest develops. On 13, and without having added to his lunchtime score, Bairstow poked flimsily at another exocet outside off stump and lobbed a simple catch to Yasir Shah at backward point.Wahab’s celebrations, however, were cut short by umpire Marais Erasmus’s outstretched arm – and the bowler could have no complaint. He had been warned after the first ball of the over that he was getting close to transgressing, then called for both of his subsequent deliveries, the second of which was the vital one.Bairstow, whose 83 at Edgbaston had arguably been the defining knock of that contest, instantly bunted a four through the covers to rub salt in Wahab’s wounds, and set about ensuring that Pakistan would be made to pay for his let-off.It wasn’t just Wahab whom the pair had to overcome. At the other end, Amir was locating that prodigious late swing that made him such a threat in his first coming as a Test cricketer, and on 23, he rapped Bairstow on the back pad with a fierce late inswinger that Pakistan felt obliged to review – the ball was shown to be slipping over the top of off stump. Then, on 9, came the key let-off, as Azhar Ali at third slip made a Horlicks of a low edge off Amir that hit him on the wrists. A similar juggled opportunity had earlier been good enough to send Gary Ballance on his way for 8, but this one refused to stick, as did another technical chance at the hands of the same fielder six runs later, although only a harsh judge could criticise Azhar for this one – a firm clip off the pads against Yasir that struck him on the chest at short leg but rebounded out of his reach. But as the session progressed, England’s confidence grew, and with it the urgency in their run-harvesting. Bairstow’s exemplary judgment of a quick single means that his stands are rarely anything less than hyper-charged, and with tea approaching, the pair were reprising their game-changing efforts in the second innings at Edgbaston.Moeen clipped the debutant Iftikhar Ahmed over midwicket for the first six of the innings, then rolled his wrists on a pull through midwicket four balls later to join his team-mate on fifty, and though Bairstow fell soon afterwards for 55, dangling his bat outside the line to inside-edge Amir through to the wicketkeeper, the arrival of Woakes offered Pakistan no let-up.With an England-record 23 wickets in a Test series against Pakistan, Woakes would be having the time of his life with or without any extra strings to his bow. Throw in his sublime form with the bat, however, and you end up with an allrounder with the form and confidence for any situation. With his cover-drive in preposterously good order, he cashed in on Wahab’s angle across his bows to breeze along to 45 from 57 balls, before feathering a thin edge to give Sohail and Pakistan a late chance to get their way back on track.Sohail did his best to oblige, extracting a marginal lbw against Stuart Broad for 0 before bowling Steven Finn through the gate for 8 to give Moeen a nervy few minutes as he biffed his way through the nineties with only James Anderson for company. But, having flashed a four past a baffled Younis Khan at slip, he took a premeditated swipe for six over deep midwicket off Yasir, to complete his century and cement England’s revival.Though he fell soon afterwards for 108, caught at square leg to complete Sohail’s five-for, Moeen’s personal contribution had all but doubled England’s halfway innings total. There had been little in the day’s opening exchanges to hint at the ebb and flow to come, with Alex Hales’ contentious early dismissal at square leg appearing to come against the run of play, given the fluency of Alastair Cook and Joe Root’s initial strokeplay. Hales, on 6, clipped firmly to Yasir at square leg, who scooped a low chance that umpire Oxenford referred upstairs for a second opinion. His initial instinct was that it carried, but the incident happened so quickly that none of the TV cameras could keep up with the blur of action, so the decision stood.England, however, had reckoned against the determination of Wahab to make an impact on the series. After entering the attack in the 12th over, he should have struck with his 13th ball, when Iftikhar shelled a low edge at first slip off Cook – ironically the same position in which Mohammad Hafeez, the man whom he had replaced, had been standing when he gave Root a crucial reprieve at Edgbaston last week. For once, Cook failed to make that sort of a let-off pay. He had added just one more run when he leant back on a pull against Sohail and under-edged into his own stumps. One over later, Root, whose stunning double-century at Old Trafford has been bookended by a cluster of limp dismissals, was suckered by Wahab’s extra pace and lift to tickle an edge through to Sarfraz Ahmed. In Wahab’s next over, he made it a collapse of 3 for 5 in 15 balls when the under-pressure James Vince was detonated from the crease by a fierce lifter that forced a defensive back-foot poke to give Sarfraz his second catch of the morning. At that stage, the contest was ripe for the seizing. But Moeen and his middle-order cohorts had other plans.

Villa Could Sign "Immense" 22 y/o Ace This Summer

Aston Villa are reportedly turning their attention to the summer transfer window, as one game remains in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

It’s been a memorable season for the Villans, who could raise the level of excitement at Villa Park with a win on Sunday to confirm their European status next term.

While Unai Emery has installed new belief and quality on the pitch, the Spaniard has equipped the club with a new-found pull ahead of the transfer window, with the four-time Europa League winner boasting an attractive CV.

As the summer window fast approaches, a host of talent has been linked with a potential move to the Midlands, including a La Liga star that is a wanted man in the Premier League.

What’s the latest on Lee Kang-In to Aston Villa?

As reported by Spanish sports news outlet Relevo, Mallorca forward Lee Kang-In will be on the move this summer.

The 22-year-old is attracting interest from England’s top division, with the report speculating that Newcastle, Wolves, Burnley and Aston Villa are the “most interested” in the attacker.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reported early last month that there were “good chances” that the South Korean, who has a release clause in the region of £15m, could make the switch to England.

What could Lee Kang-In bring to Aston Villa?

Playing predominantly as an attacking midfielder, Mallorca’s versatile forward has been deployed on both flanks throughout the season, showing his ability to be a danger all over the final third of the pitch.

The 22-year-old could be a strong inclusion to Emery’s plans at Villa, particularly through what the La Liga ace could offer alongside Ollie Watkins in attack.

Villa’s talisman has netted 14 goals so far this campaign, and has been integral to the side's success going forward.

As stated by the Spanish coach in April when speaking to The Athletic, the 51-year-old plans to add an additional striker to his squad.

Despite not being a No 9, Lee could provide the Englishman with an increased outlook on goal, as well as the ability to find the net himself in what could prove to be a deadly duo at Villa Park.

Hailed as “immense” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the South Korean has netted six goals in La Liga this term, as well as averaging 2.83 successful take-ons per 90, ranking him in the top 1% in comparison to forwards in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year – as per FBref.

While Watkins is a seasoned goalscorer, the 27-year-old lacks in areas that the Mallorca ace excels in, averaging just 0.53 successful take-ons per 90 – as per FBref – proving that Lee could be the missing piece to bolstering Villa’s attack.

The 22-year-old occupies the flanks currently in La Liga, proving as a competent partner for striker Vedat Muriqi, who have a formidable partnership as told by their contribution to their side’s goals in Spain’s top division.

A devilish duo in attack could transform Emery’s squad, especially if the Spaniard could replicate the success that the rising star has had in Mallorca in the Midlands, alongside one of the Premier League’s sharpest strikers.

Rangers: Beale Dealt Shattering Transfer Blow After Twist

Rangers manager Michael Beale personally "believed he was close" to signing his top transfer target, but there's now been a twist.

What's the latest Rangers transfer news?

There is set to be a real summer of changes at Ibrox as the Gers, after a largely underwhelming Scottish Premiership campaign, look to wrestle dominance back off Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Beale's side are reliably believed to be in pole position to sign Ecuador international and Los Angeles FC star Jose Cifuentes, with talks held and at an advanced stage, according to reports.

The South American is by no means the only player attracting Gers' interest, though, as Arsenal's Aaron Trusty is also believed to be on their radar.

Rangers need to be busy in this transfer market as a plethora of first team players look set to leave for free at the end of this month, including Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Filip Helander, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and Kieran Wright (Transfermarkt).

The latter two are particularly concerning as Beale will be left very short in the goalkeeping department, with club legend McGregor set to depart and may well retire depending on developments.

Jack Butland warming up

Signing a new shot-stopper may well be imperative, but a report from The Scottish Sun has some bad news in this regard.

According to their information, Man United are preparing to hijack the Gers' move for Butland and want to sign him permanently as cover for David De Gea and Dean Henderson.

United are even ready to double Rangers' salary offer for the 30-year-old who is set to leave parent club Crystal Palace on a Bosman deal this summer.

The Red Devils' stance is described as a potential "huge blow", as Beale "believed he was close" to signing Butland, who was his "main target".

SunSport also claimed that Rangers were on the brink of making Butland their first summer signing, but after a twist from Old Trafford, it appears they're now on the backseat.

Who is Jack Butland?

The former Stoke City goalkeeper, who has nine caps for England at international level, could bring a wealth of experience and quality to Glasgow – making him a credible candidate to succeed McGregor.

Butland has found game time difficult to come by over the last few seasons, but former Palace boss Patrick Vieira claimed last year this didn't get him down – branding his ex-keeper a "real" and "positive" professional.

Signing the player on a free deal would be excellent business from Rangers' perspective, but United's presence now certainly complicates matters.

Aston Villa Preparing "Huge" Offer For 27 y/o

Aston Villa are preparing to table a "huge" offer for Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio this summer, according to an exciting new transfer claim.

Has Asensio been linked with Villa move?

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a memorable career at the Spanish giants, spending almost a decade there and winning countless trophies along the way. He has racked up a combined six Champions League and La Liga crowns (three of each), not to mention four Club World Cups and a Spanish Cup.

Asensio is out of contract at the end of this season, however, and with no new deal coming his way yet, it looks as though Madrid are willing to see him leave on a free transfer, and the player himself doesn't like the idea of staying put.

Villa have been linked with a move for the attacker in recent times, seeing him as a high-profile potential addition, and now a new update has emerged regarding their pursuit of him in the coming weeks.

Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio.

Are Villa set to table Asensio bid?

According to Football Insider, the Villans are readying a "huge" offer for Asensio, as they look to complete an audacious piece of summer transfer business. It is stated that he is "on the verge of leaving Real Madrid after rejecting a new contract with the European champions."

Villa are believed to be "closely monitoring" his current situation, but he is "set to be deluged with offers from clubs in the Premier League and overseas."

Asensio really would be a statement signing if NSWE and Unai Emery were able to pull it off, making the rest of the Premier League sit and up and take notice in the process. His brilliance speaks for itself down the years, having scored 61 goals and registered 32 assists for Madrid, including finding the net in the 2017 Champions League final win over Juventus, with his pace, dribbling and wand-like left foot all standing out.

The Spain international has been lauded as a potential "Golden Ball winner" in the past by Florentino Perez, Raul once said he has a "great future" ahead of him, whereas he was also described as "sensational" for the impact he's made from the bench back in October.

While Asensio hasn't necessarily hit those heights throughout his career, at 27, this could be the moment that he is ready to be the star player at a club, possibly helping inspire Villa to new heights.

Man Utd Could Land "Complete" £26m-rated Maguire Upgrade

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, speculation is now mounting as to just who will be arriving at Manchester United ahead of next season, with manager Erik ten Hag no doubt hoping to kick on from what has been an encouraging, albeit far from perfect debut campaign at the helm.

While Saturday's win over Wolverhampton Wanderers has got the club's top-four bid back on track – with the Carabao Cup winners also having the chance of gaining further silverware in the FA Cup final next month – the current campaign has not been without its notable lows, including suffering hefty defeats away to the likes of Brentford, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Those shambolic drubbings have showcased that there is still plenty of work for United to do to improve defensively, despite the fact that long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea currently ranks first in the Premier League for clean sheets (16).

In order to address that problem, speculation is rife that club captain Harry Maguire will be among those to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, with the Englishman's potential departure opening the door for a possible new recruit in the backline.

According to a recent report from journalist Santi Aouna, the Red Devils may have already found a replacement for the 30-year-old in the form of RB Leipzig's Mohamed Simakan, with the transfer insider stating that the club – as well as rivals Arsenal – have "enquired" about the signing of the promising Frenchman.

Would Simakan be a good signing for Man United?

The obvious benefit of signing the 23-year-old would be his ability to feature in both a centre-back role and at right-back if required, with such flexibility having seen the "complete" defender likened to a "young Lilian Thuram" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

That comparison to his legendary compatriot – who was memorably part of Les Blues' World Cup-winning side in 1998 and is second to only Hugo Lloris for caps for his country – is an indication of just what a huge talent Simakan has, having shone in Germany in recent times.

The £26m-rated powerhouse has racked up 76 appearances across all fronts for the Bundesliga side since his arrival from Strasbourg in 2021, notably scoring three goals and providing eight assists in 35 games in all competitions so far this season.

RB Leipzig's Mohamed Simakan

Not just a greater attacking threat than Maguire – who has no goals and assists this season – the Marseille-born ace also appears to offer a greater ability at playing out from the back as he ranks in the top 6% among his European peers for progressive passes, as well as in the top 2% for progressive carries.

Maguire, by contrast, ranks in just the top 42% and the top 16% for those same two metrics, respectively, with the United man having been restricted to just seven top-flight starts after falling down the pecking order under Ten Hag.

It is also Simakan who appears to offer a greater ball-winning presence having averaged 1.67 tackles per 90 across the last 365 days, as per FBref, while the former Leicester City man has averaged just 1.03 in that regard.

As such, turning to the Leipzig sensation could well represent the Maguire upgrade that Ten Hag will be craving, helping to apply greater pressure on his fellow Frenchman, Raphael Varane over the coming years.

Australian broadcasters argue for radical change

Channel Nine and Network Ten have warned that international cricket runs the risk of being significantly devalued and overrun by domestic Twenty20 unless radical schedule changes provide league structures that viewers and fans can understand

James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, has been a longtime advocate of changes to the way international cricket is structured•ICC

Australian cricket’s major broadcasters Channel Nine and Network Ten have warned that international cricket runs the serious risk of being significantly devalued and overrun by domestic Twenty20 unless radical schedule changes provide league structures that viewers and fans can understand.Speaking to more than 200 delegates at the Australian Cricket Conference (ACC) this week, Amanda Laing, the managing director of Nine, and David Barham, the head of Ten’s Big Bash League coverage, both stressed the need for change, in a panel discussion that also featured Geoff Allardice, the ICC general manager of cricket. The ICC’s cricket and chief executives committees are presently working through the details of a plan to overhaul international cricket from top to bottom, with the introduction of leagues for all three formats, and two divisions for Test cricket. The boards of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India have expressed their opposition to change, ahead of meetings scheduled for September and October. At the last ACC in 2010, major structural changes to Australian cricket – including fundamental reform of Cricket Australia, the governing body, and the introduction of the BBL – were expedited by a mood for change. This time around, the focus was on reforms at a more global level, though this battle must by its nature be fought at ICC committee and board levels.James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, has been a longtime advocate of changes to the way international cricket is structured, first floating the concepts in discussion this year as far back as 2008. He said Laing and Barham had laid out quite a compelling case.”We are conscious of some of the comments we’ve read in the media recently, but as far as I can see, those comments have been overmuch sharply focused on the concept of two divisions for Test cricket,” Sutherland said of the opposition to change. “This issue is far broader than that single issue around two divisions. We’re talking about three formats, we’re talking about a structure from which our corporate partners, our fans and our media partners can all understand the three formats, when they’re played and why they’re played.”There’s so much more to it before you consider options or alternatives around a commercial model that might see some bundling of rights. As far as I can see, the opposition has been overmuch limited to that issue of divisions around Test cricket. That may or may not be a big issue – I certainly don’t see that as being the biggest issue. We’ve got broad acceptance and alignment around the ICC table, certainly from the chief executives, the need for that context and structure is clearly there.”I would add that during the conference, we had representatives of our two free-to-air media partners in a panel discussion and they certainly roundly endorsed the concept of international cricket being clearer around structure and context. They saw that as being better for their viewers, cricket fans and their business as a whole. That in itself was a pretty compelling argument, I felt, for us to continue down this path.”The proposed changes include the concept of pooling broadcast rights for bilateral cricket so that the value of the wealthier cricket nations can be combined with that of the rest for a stronger collective result. However, the financial case looks as though it may be overtaken by emotional and traditional arguments against the loss of face represented by relegation to Test cricket’s second division. Sutherland said he and other advocates were conscious of addressing these concerns.”We like to think we’re very understanding of that and hearing everyone’s thoughts and views on that,” Sutherland said. “I understand the temptation to come back and focus on this as a single hurdle issue – there’s so much more to it than that and I think it all needs to be put in much greater context. If that is an obstacle, then we need to work through that, but at the same time, those that do see it as an obstacle also need to see a bigger picture about the benefits of having some structure and looking at an alternative commercial model for bilateral rights.”The reality is that we have three formats the game, we also have emerging T20 competitions where there is high demand for cricket product around the world, and, at times, we’re selling against ourselves. At times, we’re seeing a diminution in the value of rights. Part of the reason for that research tells us, this is not just us sticking our finger in the air and guessing about it, is because international cricket – Tests, One-Day cricket and T20 internationals – doesn’t have the context that the fans are looking for to really understand.”That each match has real purpose and meaning and context to some sort of league ladder, like the vast majority of sporting competitions played around the world. That’s where we see the benefit and the big picture.”Other major agenda items at the conference included the need for greater focus in Australia on bringing more women to the game, renewed discussion of the links between grassroots competitions and elite cricket, and planning for the next ICC event to be hosted in Australia, the World T20 in 2020.David Peever, the CA chairman, added that the goal of having cricket as part of the Olympics was still very much a priority, despite Indian opposition. “We see the Olympics, as do all other countries bar one, as very important to the development and growth of the game globally and bringing all countries into cricket competition,” he said. “The discussions at the ICC are ongoing and we are continuing to try to work through the issues which are making it difficult for India to at this point agree.”We’ll continue to do that and work as vigorously as we can to try to bring this about. We believe in it very strongly and really want to make it happen if we can. One of the starting points is the Commonwealth Games in 2022 in Durban; there will be Women’s cricket at that. That’s not cricket at the Olympics, but it is a start. We’ll continue to work through it at Board level and with the ICC.”

Arsenal Staff Member in Spat With Former Gunner

Well-known Arsenal photographer Stuart MacFarlane has slammed an unnamed ex-reserve player after he was "trolled" in a message for not winning the league.

How many days were Arsenal top of the league?

It was a tough weekend for the Gunners as they lost by a single goal away at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

As a direct consequence, rivals Manchester City were able to win the title race without actually having to kick a ball on Sunday – though they still picked up all three points against Chelsea in their own match.

Sadly, Arsenal's failure to lift the league trophy means they set a new record as the team that spent the most days at the top of the table (248) without managing to go on and win the division.

In light of their defeat, it seems one gleeful ex-Gunner could help but rub the club's disappointment in the face of one of their loyal staff members.

Indeed, as revealed by MacFarlane on his personal Instagram page, a former Arsenal academy man had been in his DMs asking like a : "Baby".

The photographer explained: "Tough evening in Nottingham but ultimately very proud of what the players and staff have achieved this season. Getting trolled on my DMs by an ex reserve player for us not winning the league is hilarious, will he ever grow up and move on…I doubt it #baby."

Who is Stuart MacFarlane?

The chief photographer and lifelong fan came to the attention of many fans last year when he delivered a rousing speech ahead of the North London Derby win over Tottenham Hotspur – as captured in Amazon's All or Nothing documentary.

At the time, Mikel Arteta explained his importance, saying (via The Sun): "This guy, for the last 30 years has captured emotions, emotions and teams.

"I want you to hear from him, how he feels about you. And about our club."

And so it's clear that MacFarlane has a deeply personal link with Arsenal and one former player thought it would be best to personally seek him out with a message to rub salt in the wounds as the club's title challenge came to a disappointing end.

It might be unfair to speculate too much on who this individual might be but TalkSport host Jamie O'Hara is one player that comes to mind. After all, he came through the academy but went on to play for Spurs and has been vocally revelling in the Gunners' struggles at every opportunity this season.

Still, that is just a guess, so perhaps it's best not to jump to any major conclusions just yet.

A century from Sean Ervine, well supported by Ryan McLaren who made 61, enabled Hampshire to reach 281 for 6 on the opening day of their Specsavers County Championship match with Somerset at Taunton.Ervine walked out to the middle when his side lost their first wicket in the fourth over of the morning. By the time he departed for 103 more than 80 overs later he had seen Hampshire to within sight of posting a competitive total.McLaren helped add 112 for the fifth wicket. Jack Leach was the pick of the home attack with 3 for 77 off 30 overs while fellow left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe ended with 2 for 81 off 25.Hampshire opted to bat first on a wicket with green tinges, a decision they might have doubted when Somerset opening bowler Lewis Gregory made an early breakthrough. Jimmy Adams played inside a good length ball with the score on 16.Somerset introduced spin well before noon, with their leading wicket taker Leach and van der Merwe coming into the attack. The latter was rewarded with his fifth ball when he bowled Will Smith for 16 with a delivery that clipped leg stump.James Vince, returning from England duty, did not resume the Hampshire captaincy – Will Smith continuing that role – and was bowled without scoring by Leach with a ball that pitched on leg, but took middle stump.Van der Merwe claimed a second wicket just before lunch when he accounted for Adam Wheater, lbw playing back to a full ball, for 21, which made the total 92 for 4.If the morning belonged to the home side then Hampshire spent the second session playing themselves back into the game.Ervine, unbeaten on 39 at the break went to his half-century when he turned Gregory off his legs to square leg, his runs coming off 98 balls with five fours.McLaren kept Ervine company and together the pair resisted the considerable pressure from the Somerset attack. McLaren went to his half-century with a boundary through the covers off Jim Allenby, having faced 139 balls. The stand ended when McLaren was well caught by Tom Abell off the full face of the bat at short-leg off Leach, with the total on 210.Ervine continued to move closer to his century, which he reached when he clipped Gregory behind square leg for two, his runs coming off 200 balls with 10 fours. The new ball was only five overs old when Leach was brought back on and with his fourth delivery had Ervine leg before to end a fine innings.Hampshire wicketkeeper Lewis McManus and Gareth Berg then remained together to see their side through to the close, by which time McManus was unbeaten on 41 and Berg was on 12.

Tottenham’s "Mental" Manager Target "May Be Tempted" To Join

Tottenham Hotspur managerial target Ange Postecoglou "may be tempted" to accept the job in the Premier League, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

What's the latest news on Ange Postecoglou to Spurs?

The Greek-Australian has reportedly “always” been one of the main candidates on Daniel Levy’s shortlist to replace interim coach Ryan Mason heading into the new season and his future north of the border is uncertain as a result of him being on a 12-month rolling contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the campaign due to him not yet signing an extension.

Football Insider claim that Celtic are preparing to table the 57-year-old a record-breaking offer that would make him the club’s best ever paid manager in their history to try and fend off interest from N17, but that doesn’t seem to have stopped the chairman from wanting to take a bite at the cherry.

The Daily Record state that the Lilywhites are readying an official approach for the Parkhead boss, with Levy holding a “concrete” interest in his target, and he’s now been backed to successfully secure his services in the weeks ahead.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Crook claimed that Postecoglou could listen to any offers that come his way from Tottenham as a result of already achieving pretty much everything possible at Celtic. He said:

“Yeah, I’ve been down their list, and I think Postecoglou may be tempted. He would be giving up Champions League football at Celtic, but he might just feel he’s done all he can.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

Is Postecoglou the right candidate for Spurs?

Since Celtic appointed Postecoglou back in 2021, he’s completely transformed the squad and has even been dubbed “mental” for his front-foot approach by compatriot Jackson Irvine, so should Tottenham be able to secure his services in the dugout, it would be a massive coup for Levy and the rest of the hierarchy.

The Hoops coach, whose preferred formation is a 4-3-3 attacking, has so far taken charge of 112 games with the green and whites, winning 82, drawing 12 and losing just 18 of those fixtures whilst averaging 2.30 points per match, via Transfermarkt.

The Champions League manager has seen this form turn into silverware having secured four titles in Glasgow which are part of the 17 trophies that he’s collected at both club and international level since the beginning of his career on the sidelines.

Finally, Postecoglou shares the same agent, CAA Base Ltd, as Son Heung-Min, Pedro Porro and Richarlison, so this existing connection his representative has to the club could potentially give them a small advantage when it comes to the two parties trying to reach an agreement.
