Tottenham: Spurs Eyeing "Likeable" Trophy-Laden Manager

Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be targeting Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou and he is on their managerial shortlist, according to reports.

Which managers could Spurs appoint?

In Spurs' latest managerial mishap, chairman Daniel Levy has now relieved former interim head coach Cristian Stellini of his duties, placing Ryan Mason in temporary charge until the end of the season.

This comes after the north Londoners suffered a mighty blow in their quest to seal a top four Premier League finish, having been thumped 6-1 at Newcastle on Sunday – a new low for Spurs in an otherwise regrettable campaign overall.

Levy, who is under mounting pressure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, quite simply must get Spurs' next appointment right or risk more protests and backlash from members of the fan base.

Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly on the verge of joining Chelsea, ruling him out as an option, with both Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann being heavily linked in the last fortnight.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou

Meanwhile, the likes of Vincent Kompany (Burnley) and Arne Slot (Feyenoord) are both also under consideration despite their currently employed status.

According to The Telegraph, another tactician 'of interest' to Tottenham is Hoops manager Postecoglou, who has been hugely successful north of the border since his appointment in 2021.

The 57-year-old has won an SPFL title and two Scottish League Cups at the club but is on course to add even silverware more this year. Indeed, Celtic are currently miles in front of Rangers at the top of the league with a Scottish Cup semi-final also nearing.

His success has clearly not gone unnoticed at Tottenham with his Parkhead contract also set to expire next month as things stand.

What could Ange bring to Spurs?

While there is an argument to be made that the Scottish Premiership isn't quite on the same level as England's top tier, Postecoglou has done an exceptional job – shifting the balance of power back Celtic's way after Rangers won the title in 2021.

Called a 'really likeable' manager by former Spurs defender Alan Hutton, the coach has won nine major honours overall at club level – winning trophies at Yokohoma F. Marinos, South Melbourne FC and Brisbane Roar.

His current status as a soon-to-be free agent is also tantalising, with Celtic potentially worried that the call of Premier League football could tempt Postecoglou.

The 4-3-3 attack-minded boss, interestingly, also shares the same agent as Tottenham star Son Heung-min.

Everton Must Bin Exceptional £120k-p/w Star v Newcastle

Everton will host Newcastle United in their Premier League clash at Goodison Park tonight and Sean Dyche will be hoping the home advantage gives his team a much-needed boost.

The Toffees have found themselves in a precarious position in the league table, currently two points deep in the relegation zone, so taking a win from their meeting with Eddie Howe’s incredibly in-form side will be absolutely vital in their challenge for survival.

Indeed, Dyche has had to deal with several injuries and suspensions to players since his arrival on Merseyside in late January with Seamus Coleman, Amadou Onana and Dominic Calvert-Lewin just some of the key players who have missed out.

Not only that, Mason Holgate found himself in hot water on his return to action last weekend, picking up a suspension for a second yellow card, whilst Abdoulaye Doucoure has been sidelined for the last three.

Having said that, Doucoure’s return to action could not have come at a better time for Dyche as the midfielder was in great form ahead of his suspension and it would come as no surprise if he doesn’t make an instant appearance in the starting XI tonight.

As a result, due to Newcastle’s tenacity in attack, it may be time for Alex Iwobi to lose his spot to accommodate the combative Doucoure’s return.

Will Iwobi be dropped vs Newcastle?

The Everton boss will be well aware that Newcastle have been unstoppable in front of goal with a 6-1 victory chalked up against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, so finding ways to hold off their overwhelming press will be essential.

A more defensive approach would be wise for the Everton boss, especially in the centre of the pitch where many of the battles will be contested, so it makes sense for Iwobi to come out of the position for a more all-around performer like Doucoure.

The £120k-per-week ace – who has been dubbed “exceptional” by Frank Leboeuf – has revived his career on the blue side of Merseyside over the last 12 months and has played a key role in attacking play, registering as many as eight assists this term.

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi.

However, when it does come to winning important battles and physicality in midfield, Iwobi has not been the best performer.

Over 32 league appearances, despite shining in his attacking attributes, the 26-year-old has lost 73% of his aerial duels and 52% of his ground duels, as well as only averaging 0.6 interceptions and losing possession 14.5 times per game.

With that being said, it would make sense for Dyche to deploy a physical presence in Doucoure instead, to ensure the Toffees are defensively sound.

Tottenham Hotspur Make Contact With "Super Manager"

Tottenham Hotspur have made contact with Brendan Rodgers about the 50-year-old becoming their next manager, according to a report from Football Insider.

Is Brendan Rodgers going to Tottenham?

Having been sacked by Leicester City at the beginning of April, rumours have started to swirl about Rodgers coming in as Tottenham manager at the end of the season, however journalist Ryan Taylor thinks his appointment "wouldn't be received well" by supporters.

Football Insider report the Northern Irishman has been sounded out by Spurs, but they are set to carry out an exhaustive managerial process to secure a replacement for Antonio Conte, and another manager is their top target.

The same report details that Julian Nagelsmann is the Lilywhites' first-choice manager, which indicates that Rodgers may only be targeted as a back-up option, but they have already started to lay down some of the groundwork.

According to a new report from Football Insider, Tottenham have made contact with the 50-year-old about the vacant role, as they continue to run the rule over potential candidates to replace Conte.

The former Celtic boss is now said to have a good chance of taking over at N17, as his CV includes successful spells at Liverpool, Leicester, Swansea and Celtic, while he also has a proven track record of developing players

His departure from Leicester means that Spurs would not be required to shell out any money in order to secure his signature, which the club are keen to avoid, having spent millions on new managers in recent years.

Is Brendan Rodgers Tottenham's best option?

The ex-Liverpool man has won nine major honours in his managerial career, including an FA Cup and Community Shield with Leicester, and that know-how of being able to win trophies could be vital for Spurs, who have been starved of success since an EFL Cup win in 2008.

West Ham United boss David Moyes hailed Rodgers as a "super manager" in the wake of his sacking, and there has been a suggestion he could bring James Maddison to the club with him, one of the club's priority transfer targets.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers

That said, Luis Enrique has a far more glittering trophy cabinet, having won the Champions League and two La Liga titles, while also being named world's best club coach for the 2014-15 season.

Enrique is said to have travelled for talks with Tottenham, and therefore Rodgers should only be considered if Spurs miss out on the Spaniard, as well as their other main targets.

Wolves Backed To Sign Liverpool Player This Summer

Wolves could sign Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho on loan in the summer transfer window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Carvalho having a good season?

Wanderers have had a tough season to date, sitting 14th in the Premier League, but there have been signs of improvements under Julen Lopetegui. Admittedly, Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Leicester City was a bad result, but it looks as though they are doing enough to remain in the top flight beyond this season.

Once the campaign is over, it is crucial that Lopetegui is backed in the transfer market, as he looks to build his own squad moving forward.

One player who could potentially be available to sign on loan is Carvalho, who has struggled to make an impression in his first season at Liverpool. While he did score a last-gasp winner at home to Newcastle United early in the campaign, he has only started four league games in total.

Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho

Could Wolves sign Carvalho?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, transfer expert Jones claimed that the 20-year-old is an option for Wolves to sign on a temporary basis this summer:

"There is uncertainty about what happens with Fabio Carvalho. Firstly, it’s worth pointing out that he will not give up on making it with Liverpool. He’s very driven to ensure the move works out long-term. But this has been a tough season for all involved, and chances could be just as limited for him next season because Liverpool have to bounce back. That is going to mean top-level recruitment.

"I think a loan will be discussed for Carvalho. Fulham hoped it would become an option when he left them, but it never did. Marco Silva helped hugely with his breakthrough, and I’m sure he would welcome him back if the player is open to it. It is difficult to take a decision like that. From Carvalho’s perspective, it may feel like admitting defeat, and I did check out other moves that could be on the table.

"There has been nothing yet, but it sounds to me like Wolves could become an option. They are in an uncertain moment with players like Matheus Nunes and Ruben Neves, and an opportunity to sign someone like Carvalho, who is an adaptable attacking midfield player, would be a good fit."

Carvalho could be an intriguing signing by Wolves at the end of the season, with Lopetegui possibly seeing him as someone he can improve as a project. Granted, it hasn't worked out for him at Liverpool yet, but he remains a young player with a huge amount of potential.

Last season, he scored ten goals and registered eight assists for Fulham, helping them reach the Premier League in the process, and he could be deemed a good squad option who can play both out wide in and a central attacking midfield role.

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Carvalho as a "special" footballer, which highlights what a talent he is, and if the Reds are willing to let him leave for a year, Molineux could be a good fit for him, especially given their Portuguese element.

Agbonlahor Shocked At Aston Villa Transfer News

Pundit and former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has been reacting to rumours linking the club with a move for Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.

What’s Agbonlahor said about a move for Walker?

NSWE are prepared to back Unai Emery with a “huge” transfer budget ahead of his first full season in charge. One player who has been linked with a move to Villa Park is Walker, with reports suggesting that Emery is after a new right-back and feels the 32-year-old could slot straight into his side.

Internal talks have been held in the Midlands over moves for Walker and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, with those at the Etihad possibly tempted into selling the pair if they receive a double bid in the region of £55m.

Talking to Football Insider regarding the speculation surrounding Walker, Agbonlahor, who contributes to Sky Sports, doesn’t think a transfer will materialise, believing “every club in the Premier League would sign” the full-back.

“I think every club in the Premier League would sign Kyle Walker. For 32, he’s still so quick. I’m not sure Man City would be willing to let him go.

“Yes, he’s been in and out of the side recently but they haven’t got a lot of right-backs at the club.

“Cancelo is out on loan, and past that they’ve only got Rico Lewis. I don’t see Walker being an option for Villa. I can’t see City being willing to let him leave.”

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Ambitious?

It could well be an ambitious move by Villa Park chiefs, but with Emery transforming things on the pitch and leading a late charge for European football, it is good to see the high standard of player the club are looking to sign.

Walker previously spent time on loan at Villa in the early stages of his career and has gone on to star at the highest level for club and country, winning 11 honours with City. He could add three more trophies before the end of the season, but on a personal note, the England international has fallen out of favour slightly, starting just 16 Premier League games this season.

Walker will also be entering the final 12 months of his City contract in the summer, so the club may see it as a good time to move the player on and refresh their full-back ranks, potentially leaving the door open for Villa, so who knows, a transfer could gather pace despite Agbonlahor’s comments.

Neville Stunned By 51 y/o at Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has been hailed by Sky Sports man Gary Neville following their latest victory over Newcastle United.

How good has Emery been for Villa?

Prior to hiring the Spaniard, Villa found themselves struggling massively under Steven Gerrard with six defeats from 11 games before the Englishman's departure.

However, there has been a sensation change of fortunes at Villa Park since Emery's appointment which has the Villa flying high in sixth spot of the Premier League table.

Indeed, only three points separate them and fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur who have found their season in free fall over recent months.

And, incredibly, only six points separates them and the team they beat on the weekend, Newcastle, who occupy the last spot in the top four.

Since taking the reigns, Emery has only overseen four defeats in the Premier League and two of those came against the current top two, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Seven games remain in Villa's league campaign but the two sides below them, Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool, both hold two games in hand on them.

Regardless, speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville has hailed Emery and insisted back in Spain the 51-year-old is viewed as a god:

(32:30) "I mean, yesterday [Saturday] watching that game thinking how Newcastle had been playing, I was stunned by Aston Villa. That was the best performance I've seen from an Aston Villa team for a long, long time."

"When I went to Valencia he's a god. And he's a god in Spain in terms of how he's thought of with what he's done at Villarreal and Sevilla and Valencia.

"You know, he was absolutely loved at Valencia for what he did there. And he came to Arsenal, and he was almost mocked a little bit at times. It's ridiculous, really. But he's come in to Villa. He's done an absolutely brilliant job. Absolutely brilliant job."

Can Villa qualify for Europe?

Villa have certainly impressed many over recent weeks with their impressive form putting them well within the picture for a spot inside the European places:

"They are very much in the mix [for Europe] as their form has been consistent so we absolutely respect them for that. Unai [Emery] has done a great job going into Villa and they have a good mix about them so full credit to them," said Eddie Howe ahead of the game.

However, it has to be noted their upcoming fixtures will definitely test Emery's men with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur still to play.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery watches on from the sideline as his side beat Newcastle United.

Having said that, Villa dismantled an in-form Newcastle on the weekend which should give them a great deal of confidence in being able to beat the teams around them.

In addition, Emery's men will have the perfect opportunity to establish themselves in these European spots with games against both Brighton and Liverpool both upcoming.

So it is by no means an easy run-in for Villa, however, they are certainly coming into form at the right time of the season with five consecutive Premier League victories under their belt.

There are still a lot of games to go in this Premier League season and plenty of twists are potentially ahead, but Villa have certainly put themselves right amongst the European pursuit.

Imagine Gnonto And Complete £13m Machine At Leeds

Should Leeds United manage to stave off the drop in the coming weeks, sporting director Victor Orta will no doubt be plotting to make a handful of notable additions in the summer window in order to improve the club's fortunes.

One area the Spaniard may well be keen to address is the centre-forward ranks, with current number nine Patrick Bamford having scored just five league goals since the start of last season, while Georginio Rutter is yet to score since his January arrival at Elland Road.

A possible solution to those goalscoring woes has emerged in the form of Italy international, Mateo Retegui, with the Whites having been named as one of the clubs who are interested in signing the Argentina-born marksman this summer.

Further reports indicate that the Yorkshire side are among a raft of Premier League clubs who have been offered the chance to sign the striker ahead of next season, with the two-cap ace – who could cost around €15m (£13m) – currently on loan at Tigre from parent club Boca Juniors.

Would Retegui be a good signing for Leeds?

A "complete forward" – as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig – Retegui has been in sparkling form in his temporary home to date, having scored 31 goals in just 53 games, as well as scoring a goal in each of his first two games at international level.

The belief would be that the goal machine would be able to continue that stellar form were he to make the move to England this summer, with Javi Gracia's side likely hoping that the former Talleres loanee can strike up a devastating attacking partnership with Italy colleague, Wilfried Gnonto.

While the duo's solitary appearance together for the Azzurri lasted just 22 minutes for Gnonto as the teenager was struck down by injury in the recent win over Malta, it could well be that the youthful pairing go on to be leading figures in Roberto Mancini's side moving forward.

In the case of Gnonto, the former FC Zurich ace is able to provide a direct and relentless threat from the flanks, with the young "firework" – as hailed by pundit Noel Whelan – notably ranking in the top 11% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for progressive carries.

Mateo Retegui for Italy

Not just able to drive his side up the pitch, the 19-year-old – who has two goals and three assists to his name in the league this season for Leeds – can also offer a creative spark as he has averaged 1.1 key passes per game in the top-flight, ensuring he could be the man to deliver the goods for Retegui, both for his country and at Elland Road.

The 5 foot 7 speedster could also be able to work around the focal point that the 6 foot 2 striker is able to offer, with Retegui having been described as a "powerful direct centre forward that we don’t see much of in modern football" by journalist Daniel Edwards.

The Tigre ace could then operate as a loan striker supported by Gnonto in a wide berth, or the two men could also work in tandem as a striking partnership, with Edwards stating that the Leeds target has "thrived" playing in a "front two" for his current side.

Either way, it would be a truly exciting prospect for Orta and co to have that 'complete' duo wreaking havoc together next season in Yorkshire…

Man Utd: 11-Pass Flop Let Ten Hag Down Vs Sevilla

Manchester United's European ambitions ended in heartbreak last night as they capitulated against Europa League masters Sevilla in their quarter-final second leg, losing 3-0 to crash out 5-2 on aggregate.

It was a woeful performance by the Red Devils, although it was always going to be a tough ask when they were missing Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes, while Marcus Rashford was only given the second half to try and make things happen.

It only took eight minutes for the home side to score, as Harry Maguire was reckless in possession following a poor back pass by David De Gea and Youssef En-Nesyri pounced upon the loose ball and scored the opener.

Two more goals in the second half condemned United to defeat and Maguire couldn’t quite recover from his mistake, losing possession nine times throughout and making only one tackle in the game and with a Sofascore rating of 6.3/10, he was the second-worst player on the pitch.

Despite his performance, it was Marcel Sabitzer who really struggled to impose himself in the tie, with Erik ten Hag deploying him in an attacking midfield slot in place of Fernandes, yet he was almost non-existent.

How did Marcel Sabitzer perform for Manchester United vs Sevilla?

The Dutchman would have expected big things from the on-loan midfielder, especially with his two-goal salvo in the first leg, yet he couldn’t get out of first gear and struggled throughout his 68 minutes on the pitch.

With a rating of 6.1/10, he ranked as the worst United outfield player and judging by his performance and the statistics to go with it, it’s easy to see why.

The Austrian completed just 11 passes last night and from a position where he was expected to make things happen, this is absolutely woeful. He managed only 26 touches during the match also while failing to register a single shot or dribble attempt as his attacking output was extremely limited.

Defensively, Sabitzer committed four fouls, lost possession ten times, was dribbled past once and won just four duels, proving that even when tasked with helping out when United were on the back foot, he failed to provide any sort of meaningful support.

Marcel Sabitzer for Man United

The team as a whole were majorly disappointing, yet the 29-year-old had the chance to showcase his abilities to Ten Hag from an attacking position but failed to live up to expectations and this arguably cost the Old Trafford side a place in the semi-finals.

After that display, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him named on the bench for the tie against Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle’s £120k-p/w Star Was A ‘Class Act’ v Everton

Newcastle United chalked up their 17th victory of the season in their Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park and Eddie Howe will surely be thrilled with the performance of his team.

The Magpies retain their spot in third following the positive result on Merseyside and have even further cemented their claim to a Champions League qualifying spot, now eight points clear inside of the top four.

Despite being away from home, the travelling Geordies dominated every area of the pitch with 60% possession, more shots on goal (15 v 13), more big chances created (3 v 0) and more accurate passes (332 v 195), proving that the team has come a long way since their last outing on the blue side of Merseyside.

In the first half, the hosts dealt with Newcastle's smothering press comfortably in the opening minutes but were ultimately punished by Callum Wilson just before the half-hour point, with the England striker delivering the opening goal to give his team the lead.

Going into the final 45 minutes, a manageable scoreline for Everton to attack turned into pure disaster with Newcastle running riot against the shaky defence.

Joelinton doubled the lead in the 72nd minute, which was followed up by another from Wilson, and it was substitute Jacob Murphy who delivered the fourth and final blow to an emptying Goodison Park to complete a 4-1 attacking masterclass.

Whilst Wilson will steal the headlines for his brilliant brace, it was Bruno Guimaraes who orchestrated the dominance in the centre of the pitch to give Newcastle full control over the Toffees.

How did Bruno Guimaraes get on vs Everton?

The Brazilian sensation has been a breath of fresh air in the team since making the move to Tyneside in January 2022 and has easily been one of the catalysts in the rapid progress achieved at Newcastle over the last 18 months.

Premier League, Newcastle United, Newcastle United news, Newcastle United team news, Newcastle United performance, NUFC news, NUFC latest news, NUFC update, NUFC team news, NUFC analysis, NUFC performance, Eddie Howe, Bruno Guimaraes

Against Everton, Guimaraes proved again exactly why he has quickly become a fan favourite and cemented a starting spot in every game he has been available for.

Over his 90-minute performance, the £120k-per-week ace had 81 touches of the ball and completed two key passes – one of which assisted Wilson's second goal – as a marker of his immense composure in central areas.

His remarkably combative nature was showcased in the fact that the Brazilian won a whopping 11 duels.

Guimaraes' performance unsurprisingly sparked high praise, with Everton journalist Dan Ghorbal hailing the midfielder on Twitter:

"Bruno Guimaraes has been absolutely sensational for Newcastle yet again. A class act."

With that being said, there will surely be excitement brewing in the North East as the Magpies edge closer to securing their dreams of Champions League football next season and if the team can continue their form they should have no trouble doing so.
