West Ham United need to improve. Julen Lopetegui has not so much started as stuttered into gear as the club’s head coach, having been thrashed at the London Stadium by Chelsea on Saturday.

It’s now three defeats from three home matches in the Premier League. After being backed with over £120m in transfer spending this summer, the Spanish tactician, David Moyes’ successor, is already under pressure.

It’s clear he needs to shuffle the pack, and after bringing him off before half-time against Chelsea, it’s clear that Guido Rodriguez should be dropped – with Anfield waiting on Wednesday.

West Ham signed Rodriguez this summer after his contract with Real Betis expired. It was a shrewd move to bring in a defence-focused midfielder who would add some strength and solidity to the engine room.

He’s started all five of West Ham’s Premier League matches this season, but he was withdrawn after only 38 minutes, replaced by the industrious Tomas Soucek.

GIVEMESPORT branded the Argentine with a 2/10 match score, writing: ‘Couldn’t live with the Chelsea midfield in the opening half an hour as the game ran away from the Hammers. Was pulled off in the 38th minute by Lopetegui for a more dominant and physical player in Soucek.’

The game passed him by. The 30-year-old has looked decent since joining West Ham but was overwhelmed by Chelsea’s slick attacking play – with Liverpool up next, his deployment at the centre of the field would send a frisson of fear lancing through the Irons faithful for sure.

That said, he’s not the only man who deserves pulling from the starting XI.

Why it's time to drop Konstantinos Mavropanos

Mavropanos has been a regular feature under Lopetegui this season, but he’s not proving he is the man to partner Max Kilman in West Ham’s central defence.

The most annoying part is that there is a player in there. In the Premier League this season, Mavropanos has won a whopping 77% of his duels. To contextualise this, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has won 65%, whereas Arsenal superstar William Saliba has succeeded with 71% of his duels.

This is a measure of the Greek defender’s natural defensive quality, but when he’s making “a mistake a game”, as was said by reporter Jacob Steinberg, it’s hard to justify his persistent inclusion in the starting line-up. Especially when flicking back to the summer’s spending spree.

Indeed, Jean-Clair Todibo signed for West Ham from OGC Nice on loan, with the option to buy for £35m. So far, the Frenchman has played only seven minutes in the Premier League (sitting as an unused substitute across the past three outings) and lasted until half-time against Bournemouth in the second round of the Carabao Cup, hooked after struggling to impose himself.

Against the Cherries, he was booked, dribbled past twice and succeeded with just one of his four attempted duels, as per Sofascore, but it’s understandable that he struggled on his first test. It happens. What’s less logical is Lopetegui’s reluctance to unleash him since – the Hammers haven’t exactly been iron at the rear.

With Liverpool (in the Carabao Cup) and Brentford coming up this week, Lopetegui would be wise to enforce change and move Mavropanos to the bench. GIVEMESPORT branded him with a 4/10 match rating after the Chelsea horrorshow: all three Blues goals were served down his flank.

They wrote: ‘It was an extremely tough afternoon for those at the back. Mavrapanos and Kilman couldn’t get hold of Jackson and the midfield runners all game. The Greek defender tried his best and got some blocks in, but ultimately wasn’t good enough.’

Something needs to change and fast. The likes of Rodriguez and Mavropanos must be axed for the fixtures ahead, lest West Ham’s poor start sour into something more ruinous.

A dominant South African batting performance allowed them to square the series with Ireland and deny the hosts a first series win over a top-eight ranked team. South Africa were much improved from three days ago, when they lost to Ireland for the first time, and appeared rejuvenated by the return of Quinton de Kock, who was rested for the first two matches, and their new opening combination.Little, Adair and Tector pick up demerit points

Ireland fast bowler Josh Little has been fined 15% of his match fee and earned a demerit point for breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”
After fielding a ball in his follow-through in the 11th over of South Africa’s innings, Little brushed the batter Quinton de Kock with his shoulder while walking back to his bowling mark. This was the second demerit point picked up by Little in the last 24 months.

Janneman Malan partnered de Kock at the top and both brought up centuries. Malan’s 177* was the second in his seven-match career and his highest score, while de Kock’s was his 16th and first since February last year. The pair shared in South Africa’s fifth-highest opening stand, first opening stand over 200 since the year 2000, and first century opening stand since the 2019 World Cup. They asked Ireland to pull off their highest successful chase to win the series and despite Simi Singh’s fighting maiden century at No.8, they fell well short.In good batting conditions, de Kock and Malan were severe on the Irish attack, particularly Mark Adair, whose line was often too wide, and Andy McBrine and George Dockrell, who conceded 102 runs between them in just 13 overs. Both batters put on perfect displays of power-hitting, with boundaries all around the small ground.The onslaught began in the second over when Malan flayed Adair through point and then whipped a full delivery through mid-on. De Kock was not far behind with back-to-back off-side drives off Craig Young. Ireland had a half-chance to dismiss de Kock in the next over, on 12, when he drove Adair in the air in the direction of Curtis Campher in the covers. Campher dived to his right and got a hand to the ball but could not hold on to a tough chance.Left-armer Josh Little, introduced in the ninth over, drew the edge from Malan with his first ball but it went through the vacant second slip area for four. Ireland pulled things back slightly between the 14th and 18th over when they did not concede any boundaries. In that time, Malan brought up his fifty, off 66 balls, De Kock’s milestone took fewer balls, 43, and came when he hit McBrine over the covers for four.De Kock overtook Malan and brought up his hundred first with a push to long-on off Dockrell, off the 83rd ball he faced, and Dockrell’s punishment did not end there. In the next over, de Kock took 16 runs off his first three balls and Malan reached his century off the fifth ball to leave Dockrell with figures of 0 for 36 from three overs.Ireland had some respite in the 37th over when de Kock pulled Simi Singh into the hands of Adair on the square leg boundary. South Africa promoted Rassie van der Dussen to No.3, ahead of captain Temba Bavuma, and he did not take too long to get his eye in. He reverse-swept the fourth ball he faced for four, but let Malan continue as the aggressor.Malan started the final powerplay by hitting Singh for a six over long-on and edging him for four to third man. Ireland’s reply was dented early when Keshav Maharaj, who opened the bowling, had Paul Stirling caught at slip, pushing at a ball that drifted into him and then turned away sharply. This was Stirling’s third cheap dismissal in the series after he made 13 and 27 in the previous two matches. Two overs later, Maharaj removed Andy Balbirnie, who looked to drive him and edged once more to Malan at slip. Balbirnie had not scored less than 50 in any of his three meetings with South Africa before this.Two overs after that, Lizaad Williams became the third South African to take a wicket with his first ball in ODIs. He pitched it short of a length, and McBride hung his bat out, edged and was caught behind. Former England international Carlton Palmer has reacted to a “brilliant” manager being linked with replacing Daniel Farke at Leeds United, calling the situation “disrespectful”.

The Whites’ start to the season has seen the pressure build on Farke, with the 3-3 draw at home to newly-promoted Portsmouth on the opening weekend immediately leaving some supporters restless.

In fairness to the German, Leeds are still sixth in the Championship, however, and considering how early in the campaign it still is, there is no reason why they can’t climb further up the table as the months pass, having reached the playoff final last time around.

That being said, West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has emerged as a rumoured target for the Whites, with the 41-year-old continuing to shine at the Hawthorns. His Baggies side are top of the league currently and are looking like one of the front-runners to seal automatic promotion to the Premier League, only dropping two points.

Pundit reacts to Corberan to Leeds rumour

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer gave his take on the situation, saying he finds it strange that Leeds would want to replace Farke with Corberan:

“I think it’s disrespectful. Daniel Farke took them to the play-off final and, obviously, people are disappointed that they weren’t promoted last season, but he had a lot of work to do and got 90 points. If he delivers 90 points again this season, they will be promoted.

“Why are they saying that he’s not safe, and who is saying that? Is this coming out of Leeds or is this coming out just from the media? I mean, they’ve played six games, won three games, drawn two. They’ve only lost one game so far. They’re on 11 points and only five points off West Bromwich Albion after six games. So, I find it incredible that we’re even having this conversation.”

This is a tricky situation where it is easy to see both sides of the argument, with Palmer certainly making some fair points about the job Farke is doing at Leeds. Granted, it hasn’t been a perfect start to the season, but sixth place and only one defeat in the league suggests he is doing plenty right.

On the flip side, it could be argued that another manager could be getting even more out of an extremely talented squad, with Corberan’s performance as West Brom manager suggesting he could be a potential upgrade on Farke.

Late last year, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman heaped praise on the Spaniard, saying: “He’s doing a brilliant job as far as I’m concerned. West Brom are doing better than I expected – I had them somewhere between 8th and 12th, which may still be the case as they’re up against other decent teams. I think Carlos is doing a brilliant job.”

For now, Farke deserves more time to keep proving himself, showing that the only way is up for Leeds this season, but if poor results occur in the coming weeks and months, Corberan could be a superb option to replace him, should he eye a West Brom exit.

Mykhailo Mudryk has supposedly impressed new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino with his attitude by stating his desire to represent Ukraine’s U21 side.

The season is now officially over for the Blues and many will be delighted by this as it will allow them to put a terrible campaign behind them, having finished 12th in the Premier League – their lowest-ever final position in the division.

Perhaps more than most, Mudryk will also be relieved to be done with English football for a short while, having really struggled to adapt to his new environment since his £88.5m January move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Indeed, the £97,000 per week winger has scored zero goals and had claimed just two assists in 17 matches since arriving and has been subjected to plenty of criticism for his underwhelmed displays.

With that in mind, you might think he'd prefer to take a big break away from the game over the summer but according to The Telegraph, he hopes to play for Ukraine at this summer’s European Under-21 Championship in a bid to rediscover his best form.

The article explained: "Mudryk’s desire to try to recapture his form and confidence with the Under-21s is thought to have impressed new head coach Mauricio Pochettino and his staff ahead of the Argentine officially starting work at Chelsea on July 1."

Can Mudryk play for Ukraine Under-21s this summer?

Mudryk had actually already had a couple of weeks off since Chelsea's season finished but he did start in Monday’s friendly against Germany, even forcing an own goal off Antonio Rudiger in the 3-3 draw.

The article adds, however, that despite being in the senior Ukraine squad, the 22-year-old is also still eligible for the Under-21s for this summer’s tournament in Romania and Georgia.

With that being the case, he hopes to use this as an opportunity to "find some rhythm at a critical time" having not played an awful lot of minutes for Chelsea in the final stages of the season.

Interestingly enough, Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi once rejected the opportunity to play for England’s Under-21s after appearing for the senior side – which left Gareth Southgate unimpressed – and so Mudryk's decision shows the very opposite attitude.

There's no doubt, Ukraine's winger has failed to live up to expectations since arriving at Stamford Bridge but he's still so young there is plenty of time for him to develop with the right coaching and this willingness to play for his nation during the summer certainly shows he's really committed to fulfilling his potential at Chelsea.

Rangers are now keen on signing Chicago Fire midfielder Brian Gutierrez, who is attracting the interest of several top European clubs, according to a recent report from The Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail report the Light Blues are one of the clubs keen on signing the Chicago Fire ace, having been impressed with his performances, with Manchester United, and other unnamed Premier League sides also being named as potential suitors.

However, the British sides may struggle to secure a work permit for the American, and a number of other European sides are also keen to take him, including the likes of Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Girona.
