West Ham fans erupt as club confirm Reid news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have erupted over an official announcement by the club.

Indeed, after consistent reports linking one of their longest serving players with an exit from the London Stadium, it appears West Ham have finally confirmed the news.

Winston Reid, after making 223 appearances over a decade-long spell for the Hammers, has now departed the club by mutual consent (Twitter).

The New Zealand international, who famously bagged the winner against bitter rivals Millwall in 2012 to guide West Ham one step closer to Premier League promotion, has cut a bit-part figure in recent seasons.

Injury issues arguably took their toll with his last Premier League appearance coming way back in 2017/2018.

The 33-year-old has since been out on loan to MLS side Sporting Kansas City in 2020 and Brentford last season, with both parties now mutually agreeing to terminate his contract.

Following a long and faithful spell with the club, many Irons supporters have erupted over the decision to let him leave in this manner whilst also not giving him a proper send-off.

Arthur confident South Africa will live up to expectations

Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, has said it would be interesting to see how his team copes with the tag of being favourites during Australia’s visit to the country

Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, has said it will be interesting to see how his team copes with the tag of being favourites during Australia’s visit to the country later this month. South Africa won the Test and ODI series on their recent tour of Australia, and Arthur felt “for the first time ever” they will go into a series against them as favourites.”Australia will be here in three weeks and we’re under no illusions they are really hurting and are going to be far angrier,” Arthur said on the team’s arrival from Australia. “With success comes expectations and we’ll be playing in front of our home crowds so that will be a lot more difficult. But I’m confident the players have it in them to repeat their success.”More than a thousand fans gathered at Johannesburg airport to greet the team, which achieved a maiden Test-series victory in Australia. “When we arrived back here after losing in the semi-finals of the World Cup [to Australia in 2007] we had to leave via the back door,” he said. “But this has been a helluva reception and a very humbling experience. We left Perth this morning as a very proud team and now we are even prouder, the magnitude of what we have done has really hit us after this fantastic reception.”Arthur said winning over the Australian crowds had been a memorable experience for the team. “To see [captain] Graeme Smith walking in front of the Noble Stand in Sydney, which gave us all sorts of abuse the last time we were there, and getting a standing ovation was phenomenal.”I think we won them over through our humility, we were extremely humble when we won. How you handle winning and losing is very important and the team was superb on and off the field. We showed a lot of respect for Australia and I think they recognised that.”Arthur was pleased with his team’s effort through the demanding tour. “Our success was down to the leadership of both captains [Smith in the Tests and Johan Botha in the one-dayers] but it also calls for an incredible work ethic, courage and commitment from the team and they left Australia as heroes.”Australia begin their South Africa tour with a warm-up game starting on February 20 after which they will play three Tests, two Twenty20 internationals and five ODIs.

Sinhalese SC grab top spot

A round-up of the eighth-round matches of the Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka A captain Thilina Kandamby took defending champions Sinhalese SC to the top of the Premier Tier A table with a sterling batting performance against Badureliya CC at the SSC ground in Colombo, during which he compiled the highest score of the season. Pace setters Ragama CC had a free weekend which enabled SSC to unseat them and occupy the top spot for the first time this seasonKandamby lifted SSC from 58 for 5 to an imposing total of 436 for 9 declared, a position from which they went on to win by an innings and 177 runs at Maitland Place. Kandamby’s 184 off 215 balls beat the season’s previous highest of 168 by Colts CC batsman Angelo Mathews, against Colombo CC. Kandamby’s innings included 19 fours and two sixes and was the cornerstone on which SSC built their total. He shared partnerships of 110 with former Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Zoysa (79) and 165 with Shalika Karunanayake (76).Badureliya CC, who began the second day on 17 for 1 chasing SSC’s total, lost 19 wickets in a day to suffer a humiliating loss. They were dismissed for 161and 98 by spinners Sachithra Senanayake and Kaushal Lokuarachchi.Title contenders Tamil Union suffered a major blow when they went down by three wickets to Colombo CC at the Saravanamuttu Stadium. Sri Lanka batsman Jehan Mubarak played a captain’s innings of 56 not out to steer CCC to their first win of the season. Needing 153 off 41 overs, CCC won with four balls to spare.Tamil Union was saved from embarrassment in their first innings by Gihan Rupasinghe whose 146 lifted them from 62 for 7 to 309. The total included five penalty runs after CCC was penalised because their bowlers ran on the danger zone of the pitch on more than two occasions.Rupasinghe, who hit 20 fours and a six, forged partnerships of 105 for the eighth wicket and 109 for the last. However he could not repeat that performance and another poor batting display in the second innings left CCC with an achievable target.Army SC, who are without the services of Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis, suffered their fourth defeat of the season when they were beaten by eight wickets by Colombo Colts at Havelock Park. Left-arm spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon and medium-pacer Nuwan Kulasekera were too much for the Army batsmen to handle and they succumbed for 175 and 123. Weerakoon scalped eight victims and Kulasekera five.Sri Lanka opener Upul Tharanga warmed up for the tri-series in Bangladesh by scoring 119 and 44 but he could not stop Nondescripts CC from conceding first-innings points to Bloomfield in their drawn match at Maitland Place. NCC were dismissed for 257 and 244 as Yohan de Silva’s 116 gave Bloomfield a substantial lead of 109.In a high-scoring match at Braybrooke Place, former Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Dinuk Hettiarachchi gave Chilaw Marians a 45-run lead by taking 5 for 109 against Moors SC. Replying to Marians’ score of 389, Moors were given a tremendous boost by their captain Anil Rideegammanagedera, who single-handedly tried to wrest the initiative with a fighting innings of 69 not out. Another former Sri Lanka cricketer Gayan Wijekoon scored a hundred and opener Amal Athulathmudali contributed 93.Saracens continued their winning streak in the Premier Tier B with a comfortable six-wicket win – their fourth of the season – over Singha SC at Reid Avenue. Saracens medium-pacer Prabath Priyankara starred with career-best figures of 6 for 71 in the first innings and left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara took 9 for 137 in the match.Panadura SC also kept pace with Saracens by recording their fourth win when they defeated Lankan CC by ten wickets at Panadura. Former Sri Lanka allrounder Dinusha Fernando played a crucial role in Panadura’s victory, scoring 64 and taking 5 for 73.Medium-pacer Sudeepa Perera took career-best figures of 6 for 59 and left-arm spinner Sudheera de Zoysa took match figures of 8 for 117 to star in Moratuwa SC’s seven-wicket win over Burgher RC at the De Soysa Stadium.Sebastianites thrashed Police SC by an innings and 90 runs at Police Park. Police’s batting was dismantled in the first innings for 57 by medium-pacer Chathura Athukorale, who not only took a career-best 7 for 21 and match figures of 11 for 69 but also contributed with the bat by scoring an unbeaten half-century.Bomb blast stops match
The Tier B match between Air Force and Seeduwa Raddoluwa had to be abandoned after the first day’s play because of a bomb blast a few yards from the ground. An official of the Air Force said that about four Seeduwa Raddoluwa players were affected by the blast, which was suspected to be set off by an LTTE suicide bomber, and could not be present at the ground the next day to resume the match.”We were told that they had felt the shock of the bomb blast and the players’ families did not want them to continue the match at the same venue,” the official said.A Seeduwa Raddoluwa official said four of their players had been injured by the blast which occurred soon after the end of the first day’s play. One player was badly injured by the debris while three others had bled from their ears. “Psychologically we were not in a position to resume the match. We have requested the tournament committee to reschedule the match,” he said. Seeduwa Raddoluwa were dismissed for 224 and Air Force had replied with 84 for 3 by the close of the first day.Player of the Week – Thilina Kandamby
One player who benefited the most by coming to Sinhalese SC is Thilina Kandamby, the former Ananda College and Bloomfield cricketer. He has not only improved his batting but is also attracting the national selectors’ attention. As long as Kandamby was at Bloomfield, he never blossomed as a middle-order batsman but he thrived in his debut season for SSC in 2007-08. The transformation was stunning and he finished with the second-highest aggregate of the season, scoring 822 runs at an average of 68.50, including three centuries, as many half-centuries, and a career best of 202. That performance won him a place in the Sri Lanka Twenty20 team to Canada last October and in the one-day squad to Zimbabwe in November. However despite playing first-class cricket for the past eight seasons, Kandamby has yet to break into the Test side. His recent innings of 184 against Badureliya CC which propelled SSC to the top of the Premier League is an indication that he has the mental strength to play big innings in the longer version of the game. For that change, Kandamby has to thank Sri Lanka A coach Chandika Hathurusingha who played a key role in his transformation from a batsman unable to bat for longer periods and with question marks over fitness to a big innings player with a penchant for runs.Points tableTier A

Lescott: City should’ve gone for Lewandowski

Joleon Lescott has offered his thoughts on whether or not Manchester City should have signed Robert Lewandowski in the summer.

What’s the talk?

The club’s former defender has suggested that they should have made a move for the Bayern Munich forward, although he believes the German giants would not have sold him late in the transfer window.

When asked about whether or not City should have gone for the Poland international instead of Harry Kane, Lescott told GiveMeSport: “It would have been a great acquisition if we’d got him but I’m not sure Bayern would have left themselves in the lurch that late in the window.

“I think Pep spoke about there being two or three players able to pick their destinations and where they want to play, and he mentioned Cristiano and Messi being two, and I’m sure he meant Lewandowski being the other.

“But again, Bayern, I don’t think they’d have let him go that late in the window not having been able to replace him.”

Pep would’ve loved it

Manchester City attempted to sign Kane from Tottenham during the summer window but failed to get their man, ending up with no additions in the number nine position despite losing Sergio Aguero. Lescott has said that Lewandowski would have been a great signing for the Premier League champions but the timing was wrong, so why did City not go for him earlier in the window?

The 39-year-old said that Bayern would not have sold the Polish marksman towards the end of the summer, which means that City should have gone in for him at the end of last season. This would have given Bayern ample time to find a replacement and Pep Guardiola a number of months to work his team around the Poland international.

Guardiola would have loved the arrival of Lewandowski as he has proven himself to be one of the best players in the world. He was named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year in 2020 and scored 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga matches for Bayern last term.

Earlier this year, former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino hailed the former Borussia Dortmund goal machine as “extraordinary”.

He told talkSPORT: “Lewandowski is extraordinary. I remember looking at his story a couple of years ago and in his early career being rejected, establishing himself and being top scorer in League 2, 1 and the Bundesliga itself.

“It’s quite clear he’s been the ultimate professional. He spoke about it in the article I read about what he thought he needed to do and the people around him.”

The £54m-rated attacker has scored 302 goals in 334 matches for Bayern in all competitions. This shows that he is a clinical, reliable goalscorer and that is why Guardiola would have loved to have him at the Etihad Stadium, as he would have been the go-to number nine to replace Aguero.

City should have ditched their efforts to sign Kane in order to pursue Lewandowski, as his immense goalscoring record suggests that he could have come in and scored the goals to bolster their Champions League hopes, with the striker having previously won the tournament.

Raju turns it on for Karnataka

Thirteen wickets fell on a spicy pitch before rain brought an early end to an interesting opening day’s play at the RSI Ground in Bangalore. Baroda were rolled over for 169 as the offspinner Sunil Raju grabbed his best first-class figures. Karnataka wobbled at the start before Rahul Dravid and rain ensured they would end the day as the happier team.A ground ringed by trees, a old army club house which has seen better days, the sun playing hide and seek through the day, and little girls in bright colourful frocks swaying on swings beside the boundary, combined to form a charming setting for the game.”It’s a five-point pitch,” a Karnataka player said. Historically, when the hosts need points, they usually hop over to this ground to get a result. It was by no means a devil of a pitch but the red soil sprinkled on the top to bind the pitch allowed enough seam movement with the new ball. And while there was bounce for the pacers, the spinners had their share of turn as well. The seamers – Vinay Kumar and NC Aiyappa – started the damage after Karnataka chose to bowl. Vinay bent one across the left-handed Connor Williams to knock out the off stump and Aiyappa induced a thick edge from Azharuddin Bilakhia, which was taken smartly by the diving keeper Thilak Naidu. Satyajit Parab, the opener, then attempted the repair job with well-timed strokes down the ground, especially against Aiyappa. It was an interesting contest with the bowler – two short of 100 first-class wickets – who kept it full, as Parab went for his drives. The team fifty came up in 10.2 overs and soon after Aiyappa finished his spell, Parab fell in the opening over of first-change bowler B Akhil. Eyeing the space in the midwicket region, Parab tried to wrist a chest-high delivery from outside off, only to spoon a dolly back to the bowler.Rakesh Solanki, though, kept the fight on with a half-century. He favoured the on side, repeatedly flicking deliveries through midwicket and when the bowlers shortened the length, he cut over point. However, the offspinner Sunil Raju, who replaced the left-armer K Appanna to counter the left-handed batsmen of Baroda, removed Solanki to trigger a collapse. Solanki didn’t connect with a sweep and the ball bobbed up to silly point. Raju struck again the next ball, inducing Ketan Panchal to nick to the keeper. Sunil Joshi and C Raghu too added to their wicket tally and though, Utkarsh Patel threw his bat around for a breezy 26, Baroda folded for 169.Baroda did fight back with the ball, reducing Karnataka to 24 for 3 before Rahul Dravid and C Raghu settled the dressing room nerves with an assured partnership. It was the debutant Ajitesh Argal, the opening bowler in the India Under-19’s victorious campaign, who did the damage for Baroda by removing the openers.Interestingly, just before he stepped on to the ground, he sprayed some perfume on himself and ended up spraying his first two deliveries down the leg side. The third delivery was on the stumps, full and nipped back in to trap KB Pawan. He also got the wicket of Robin Uthappa, who punched a short-of-length delivery on the up but straight to short wide mid-off.And Manish Pandey, who looked good in his brief stay, fell poking to Salim Veragi but Dravid asserted himself on the proceedings. He started off with a cover-driven boundary off his first ball and flicked Argal for two more fours before the skies opened up. Still, if Baroda can prise out Dravid early tomorrow, the game will be split open again.
