Newcastle United’s top choice before Unai Emery to be their next manager has now been revealed as Zinedine Zidane.
The Lowdown: Curveball
When it looked as if Emery was all set to become the next manager at St. James’ Park, he threw a curveball by releasing a statement saying that he is committed to Villarreal and so would not take the job if it was offered to him by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.
That means that the race is now wide open again, with the likes of Roberto Martinez, Eddie Howe and Paulo Fonseca named as potential candidates in recent days.
Nonetheless, it looks as if Graeme Jones will now be taking charge once more at the weekend in the Premier League against Brighton and Hove Albion, unless the new owners can get someone through the door fast.
The Latest: Zidane was top choice
As per El Espanol, Zidane was the new ownership’s top choice before Emery, but the former Real Madrid coach did not fancy managing in the North East.
He is reportedly waiting to see if the Manchester United or France job becomes vacant, and is the ‘big favourite’ to take over from Didier Deschamps for their national side.
However, if the new ownership on Tyneside can sell their long-term project to him, then he could be persuaded to change his mind.
The Verdict: Move on
With the Magpies currently in a relegation battle at the moment, it just seems too unrealistic that Zidane would join them now.
This is a manager who has won the UEFA Champions League no fewer than three times with Madrid, as well as many other major accolades (Transfermarkt).
Described as ‘phenomenal’ for what he achieved with Los Blancos by pundit Kevin Phillips, the legendary former playmaker is likely to want his next job to be with another big name in world football.

The Toon are simply not there yet compared to the likes of Manchester United, but their time may come with the embarrassment of riches at their disposal, so perhaps this is one to keep an eye on down the line, if the Toon can establish themselves as challengers for European competition.
Nonetheless, one has to admire the ambition of the new owners for making Zidane their top choice.

Sussex have announced that Chris Nash did not suffer a broken leg in his collision with team-mate
Cricinfo staff01-Jun-2009Sussex have announced that Chris Nash did not suffer a broken leg in his collision with team-mate Dwayne Smith during Sunday’s Twenty20 Cup match against Kent at Canterbury. The game was delayed for 15 minutes after the two collided on the boundary trying to catch a top edge from Geraint Jones. Nash was eventually stretchered off and taken to hospital.”X-rays to the leg revealed that there was no break, but deep tissue damage and Chris was discharged last evening,” a club spokesman said on Monday. It is expected he will be out of action for around two weeks.
Southampton secured a much-needed victory over Watford at Vicarage Road thanks to a brilliant strike from Che Adams.
The Scotland international’s perfectly-weighted effort curled over a helpless Ben Foster on the 20-minute mark and it proved enough to seal a first away win in the Premier League for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s charges this season.
Despite Adams’ match-winning effort, though, it was arguably full-back Kyle Walker-Peters who was the Saints’ real star of the show during a satisfying afternoon for the away side.
He set the tone early on with a lung-busting run down the left flank before providing a brilliant cutback for Adam Armstrong, but the out-of-form forward couldn’t provide the finish.
The £16.2m-rated gem then showed his class in a defensive sense as well. Watford’s Ismaila Sarr thought he had scored the equaliser following a quick breakaway, but Walker-Peters managed to get himself in the way of the attacker’s shot, making a vital goal-line clearance in the process.
His outstanding efforts at both ends of the pitch resulted in SofaScore awarding him an eight out of 10, the highest total received by any player on the pitch.
Throughout the 90 minutes, Walker-Peters won five duels, made three clearances and created one big chance, illustrating his effective performance at both ends of the pitch.
Hampshire Live journalist Rob Warlow was also impressed by the versatile full-back’s showing against the Hornets, writing: “Restored to the team at left-back and he did well, getting forward from defence to support the attack.
“He did his job defensively too against a difficult opponent in Ismaila Sarr, with Walker-Peters getting back superbly to make a goalline clearance to deny the Watford winger an equaliser.”
With Aston Villa up next for Southampton, the Saints will be hoping to build some momentum for the weeks ahead, and on today’s showing, Walker-Peters could be crucial if they are to do just that.

Start time 8pm (16.00GMT)Big PictureAfter the end of a draining one-day series, which Australia won 3-2, the teams sign off with a Twenty20 in Dubai. Time is running out for the sides ahead of the World Twenty20 in June and both outfits remain in heavy testing.Australia have a new captain in Brad Haddin, the wicketkeeper, who takes over after Michael Clarke left following Sunday’s loss to gain a few extra days of rest. Ricky Ponting is also at home, but will rejoin his men in England along with Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson.Haddin led his country for the first time in January, when Australia beat New Zealand in Sydney, and the title shows his growing importance in the set-up. His opposite number is Younis Khan, who remains wary of the Australians in all forms of the game.Form guide (last five Twenty20s, most recent first)Pakistan LWWWW

Watch out forBrad Haddin looked in great touch in the final one-dayer before becoming too adventurous against Shoaib Akhtar and the added responsibility of being captain may lift him to a more substantial score. In the five ODIs he collected a disappointing 110 runs and will want a strong farewell to the campaign.Misbah-ul-Haq is Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in Twenty20 with 398 in 14 games and his strike-rate is an impressive 127. He averaged 53.66 during the ODI series and if he fires Pakistan could end the series with back-to-back wins.Team newsFor the first time this year Australia should have Brett Lee in the team. Lee had foot and ankle surgery after the Boxing Day Test and will have a run in this contest before a short IPL stint and the World Twenty20. Shane Watson, one of the standouts from the ODI series, may also bowl for the first time since he was floored by back stress fractures in December.Australia squad Brad Haddin (capt, wk), Doug Bollinger, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Callum Ferguson, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Hopes, David Hussey, Ben Laughlin, Brett Lee, Marcus North, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson.Iftikhar Anjum missed the 15 for the World Twenty20 so it is unlikely he will have a chance to play in Dubai, leaving 13 players pushing for a game. Shoaib Akhtar held his place after the one-day series with a view to providing explosive short spells in England next month.Pakistan squad Younis Khan (capt), Salman Butt, Ahmed Shehzad, Shoaib Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal (wk), Fawad Alam, Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Yasir Arafat, Saeed Ajmal, Iftikhar Anjum. Pitch and conditionsThis is the first Twenty20 at Dubai Sports City and the only two internationals held at the ground were the ones that opened the ODI series. The highest total in four innings was 208, so a big Twenty20 score appears unlikely. Despite Liverpool heading into their latest Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid in rather good form having managed to not lose a single game across all competitions this season and putting five goals past Watford in their latest Premier League game, there are some concerns for Reds manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of the midweek match.
What’s the latest?
As well having Thiago Alcantara and Harvey Elliott out with injuries, it seems as though Klopp will have to make do with another one of his midfield options being unavailable for their midweek clash.
Even though he trained with the rest of his teammates on Monday, it has been confirmed that Reds midfielder Curtis Jones will not be included in the squad to face Atletico due to an injury he picked up during the recent international break with the England U21 side, which Klopp will not be happy with at all.
As a product of Liverpool’s youth academy, Jones made his senior debut for the Merseyside club back in January 2019 in an FA Cup defeat against Wolves. Since then, the 20-year-old, who is currently valued at £27m according to Transfermarkt, has made 53 appearances for Klopp’s side across all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists along the way.
So far this season, Jones has made six appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process, not only proving himself as a fairly regular senior midfield option for the Reds, which is why his latest injury issue would make him a big miss for the team in midweek given the other injuries they currently have in that area.
His form in their last Champions League match, supplying two goals v Porto, also proves why Klopp will be gutted to lose him.
In terms of who the manager could turn to for the match against Atletico to cover for Jones’ absence, we feel he could either stick with the likes of Naby Keita and James Milner who started against Watford at the weekend or bring in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who came on as a substitute in the second half of the match against the Hornets.
Either way, given the uncertainty of when exactly Thiago and Elliott will be back fit again, Klopp and everyone else at the club will undoubtedly be hoping that Jones will be able to get back to full fitness as soon as possible to offer the side an extra midfield option
