Ponting open to giving Clarke limited-overs captaincy

The Australian captain said preserving himself for Test cricket would be an option in the future

Australia’s captain Ricky Ponting is open to the idea of handing deputy Michael Clarke the leadership responsibilities for the Twenty20 and one-day teams, and preserving himself for Test cricket.Clarke, 28, has already captained Australia in 11 limited-overs and two Twenty20 internationals while Ponting has been rested or injured. He was installed as Test vice-captain after the retirement of Adam Gilchrist, and led all Australian batsmen with 448 runs at 64.00 during the 2009 Ashes series.Ponting assumed the one-day leadership in 2002 while Steve Waugh was still at the helm of the Test side. The pair shared the captaincy until Waugh’s retirement from Test cricket in 2004. Ponting has been the first-choice captain of Australia’s Test, ODI and Twenty20 sides ever since.”If that’s the way that I or others outside of what I’m thinking decide (is) the right way to go, there’s absolutely no reason why that couldn’t happen,” Ponting said of splitting the captaincy with Clarke. “It has happened in the past with Australian teams. It is happening with other teams around the world right at the moment.”Paul Collingwood is captain of the England Twenty20 team and Andrew Strauss is captain of the one-day and Test cricket teams. Those things are things that need to be thought long and hard about, but if it means that I’m going to be better off for Test matches and bigger series when they come around.”Ponting returned to Sydney on Wednesday after becoming the first Australian captain since Billy Murdoch to twice surrender the Ashes in England. The defeat at Lord’s ensured Australia the added ignominy of slipping to fourth place on the ICC Test rankings, having lost three of their past five series.Australia’s transitional issues have led to calls from certain sections of the local media for Ponting’s axing as captain, however he has reaffirmed his desire to play on until the 2013 Ashes series.”Having a pretty bitter and sour taste in my mouth at the end of that Test match, I’d love to be able to go back and give it one more crack,” he said. “I’ve got to worry about the next 12 or 18 months and see if all that hunger or commitment is still there. It’s probably higher right now than ever before. Who knows, 2013 might be something achievable.”I still think I’ve got a lot to offer the team, as a batsman and as a captain and as a leader. If it ends up getting to the point where I’m not the captain, my hunger and determination to keep playing this game are as good as ever.”If that’s with a ‘c’ next to my name, all well and good. If it’s not, I still think I have a lot to offer, particularly a lot of younger guys who are around our set-up at the moment.”Australia’s returning cricketers have expressed their ongoing support for Ponting, with Stuart Clark describing calls for his sacking as “ludicrous”. “He’s the best man to captain,” Clark said after arriving at Sydney airport. “I think it’s ludicrous that anyone would say any other [person should captain Australia]. That’s the way it is.”Simon Katich was similarly defensive of Ponting. “There were eleven of us out there that had the opportunity to win the Ashes and you can’t just blame it on one person,” Katich said. “We had our chances through the whole five Tests.”

Everton team news vs Man City

Many Everton fans have been left raging as some early team news has emerged ahead of their game away at Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of their match in the Premier League, Rafa Benitez has now revealed (via Phil Kirkbride) that Yerry Mina, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all remain out injured and therefore will not play any part in the fixture.

All four players made at least 29 appearances for the Goodison Park faithful last season (Transfermarkt), showing just how important they are to the team and the squad, but now the Merseyside club face even more of an uphill battle without them.

Reigning champions City are currently in second spot in the table, three points behind Chelsea, and will be hungry to catch up to them with all three points at the Etihad Stadium, and with four key players out for the Toffees, it should be an easier task for them.

Everton must move on van de Beek

Everton are set to have an interesting transfer window if speculation is to be believed, with many players already being linked with moves to the Merseyside club.

Rafa Benitez will be keen to add quality to their team after an injury crisis in attack and the swift departure of James Rodriguez, a key area they will be looking to enhance is their midfield.

Manchester United misfit, Donny Van De Beek, would be the ideal addition to the Toffees, with previous links to a move in the summer transfer window.

Van De Beek’s agent gave an interview on deadline day to Ziggo Sport, where he claimed Manchester United and Solskjaer refused to escalate a move for the midfielder to join Everton.

Guido Albers said;

“We had conversations with Solskjær and the board. We took the initiative to find a club and our search ended up at Everton. We opened talks with Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri.

“On Monday night [before deadline day] we received a call from Solskjær and the club who told us that a transfer was out of question and that he had to report himself to training the next morning.”

Everton have a fantastic forward line in Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, with the Brazilian returning from injury recently and the former due to return in the next few weeks. Thus, sourcing the Dutch playmaking midfielder to link up with the dynamic duo would be advantageous to Everton as they attempt to make top six and European football.

Calvert-Lewin has been a fantastic attacking presence for Everton, with 56 goals and 16 assists for the Toffees in 176 appearances and will look to add more many goals when he returns from injury in the coming weeks.

Despite not being utilised at Manchester United, the 24-year-old Netherlands native, was highly impressive at Ajax with 41 goals in 175 appearances, his efficiency playing in multiple midfield and attacking roles, as he did at his former club, would be highly beneficial to the attacking prowess at Everton.

There is a with huge opportunity for fantastic link-up play with Calvert-Lewin especially. Having previously been described as “perfect” by Owen Hargreaves, the thought of the United midfielder lining up in the same side as Everton’s star striker is mouth-watering.

Benitez must act fast swooping in for £22.5m-rated van de Beek, as he is a sought after hot target for other Premier League clubs in the upcoming transfer window, including Newcastle United, who are expected to go all out in the winter transfer window after their billion-pound takeover.

Emerging Indians brush aside hosts

A round-up of the matches on day one of the Emerging Players Tournament

Cricinfo staff21-Jul-2009
ScorecardIndia Emerging Players kicked off their Australian tour with a facile win over the Australian Institute of Sports with nine balls to spare in the opening match of the two-week tournament. The tourists made regular inroads and were lead by their new-ball pair of Sudeep Tyagi and Pradeep Sangwan, who picked up two wickets each as Australia were restricted to 101.Tom Cooper, the No. 3, held Australia together with an unbeaten 63 from 57 balls but there was absolutely no support. The home side was rocked first ball when Tyagi took out Rob Quiney, and then slipped to 4 for 24 with each of India’s first five bowlers finding success. Cooper’s innings contained six fours and a pair of sixes and stood poles apart from the next highest contribution, 8.India themselves were in a spot of bother at 3 for 19, Peter George taking 2 for 9 in four overs, but Ajinkya Rahane and Abhishek Nayar steered the chase thereafter. Rahane finished unbeaten on 43 from 55 balls while Nayar (30 from 19) assisted capably.
ScorecardSouth Africa Emerging Players began their tournament on a high with a last-ball six-wicket win over New Zealand Emerging Players. Chasing 130, South Africa sealed a tight victory thanks to some clinical hitting from the captain Vaughn van Jaarsveld, who made 53 from 47 balls, and a steady unbeaten 58 from the opener Henry Davids. After opting to bat first, New Zealand posted 9 for 129 thanks to Colin de Grandhomme’s 49 from 34 balls. BJ Watling contributed 29 off 37 balls in an opening stand of 72 in 9.2 overs before being run out. Reece Young celebrated his call-up to the senior side by smashing an unbeaten 24 from 14 balls as slow left-armer Dean Elgar snared three victims to ruin the lower order.New Zealand’s attack, led by Tim Southee’s successive strikes in the third over, hurt South Africa’s top order but crucially failed to dislodge Davids, who shored up the chase. van Jaarsveld, batting at No. 4, played an excellent hand to ease the chase and though he fell with 22 needed, Davids finished matters off.

Rafiq shows talent with a ton

A newspaper article stated that today is the happiest day of the year. It certainly was for Yorkshire’s 18-year-old all-rounder Azeem Rafiq, who scored his first century

John Ward at Worcester19-Jun-2009
ScorecardA newspaper article stated that today is the happiest day of the year. It certainly was for Yorkshire’s 18-year-old all-rounder Azeem Rafiq, who scored his first century. But there was little joy for anybody after lunch, as the only winner of this match was a pitch so moribund that on the fourth day 306 runs could be scored for the loss of only five wickets.Yorkshire, two runs behind Worcestershire overnight with two wickets in hand, soon took the lead. Rafiq, who began the day with 62, had lost none of his confidence and panache, and was soon laying into the bowlers with freedom. Even Matthew Hoggard felt inclined to shed his dogged image and indulge in the frivolity of free strokeplay, and the scoreboard fairly rattled along. Such enterprise did entail risks, and both got away with some lucky nicks, most of which carried for four, and when Hoggard had 37 he was dropped off a difficult chance by second slip.Rafiq showed occasional caution but remarkably few nerves on approaching his century, in only his second first-class match. A swat past midwicket for four took him to three figures, one of Yorkshire’s youngest century-makers at 18 years and 112 days; he is about two months older than Len Hutton was when he first achieved the feat for Yorkshire – against the same team on the same ground – in 1934. It was no doubt considerably faster than Hutton’s 196, as it took him only 92 balls. He soon lost concentration and lofted down the throat of long-on, but it had been a superb innings, containing 13 fours and three sixes in a stand with Hoggard worth 150.Deon Kruis started confidently with a three, and the run rampage was continued by Yorkshire’s last two batsmen. The Worcestershire bowling was totally ineffective rather than ragged and they seemed to lack initiative or direction in the field. Hoggard reached his fifty off 94 balls with two classic off-side drives, and another 32 were added in 16 minutes before Kruis swung across the line and was bowled for 16, leaving Hoggard unbeaten with 56. Overall Chris Whelan had been Worcestershire’s best bowler with 4 wickets for 130, but he had also looked quite helpless against Yorkshire’s rampant tail-enders.There was no realistic chance of an outright result, however, on such a placid pitch. After their struggles this year, Worcestershire will be relieved to secure a draw, but there are altogether too many indecisive championship matches these days on pitches like these, which allow such high scoring even on the fourth day. Worcestershire had no doubts about their ability to bat out the day, and began in aggressive spirit, with Daryl Mitchell hitting Tim Bresnan for four and three off the first two balls of the innings. With Stephen Moore then driving straight for another boundary, it was an expensive first over. Bresnan soon retired with a slight hip injury, joining Hoggard, still feeling the effects of a blow on the helmet while batting. Yorkshire therefore had a seriously weakened attack, but given the state of the match it hardly mattered. The 50 came up in the eleventh over, and the openers registered 67 before Mitchell swept at Rafiq and was out lbw for 32. Moore reached his second fifty of the match with a six off Rafiq over long-on but was then bowled for 52 by a faster ball from Ajmal Shahzad that shot through fairly low. The third wicket to fall was that of Vikram Solanki, caught at slip off a very good ball from Rafiq for 48. The match then trailed off to its predictably dull finish, despite a lot of good cricket that had gone before.
