Phil Hay confirms big Leeds injury boost

Leeds United quartet Diego Llorente, Junior Firpo, Dan James and Jack Harrison are all available for the Premier League clash with Burnley this weekend.

The Lowdown: Injury-plagued season

Having finished ninth in their first campaign back in the top flight in 2020/21, the Whites have experienced a much tougher time of things this season. They currently sit perilously close to the relegation zone, with a mix of poor performances and countless injuries impeding Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

However, with Sunday’s visit of Burnley looming, it looks as though their fitness woes may finally be subsiding.

The Latest: Hay delivers much-needed injury boost

Taking to Twitter on Friday, journalist Phil Hay confirmed that Llorente, Firpo, James and Harrison were all in contention to play this weekend after recovering from injury.

He tweeted this encouraging 11-word update: “Firpo, James, Llorente, Harrison are all fit and available for Sunday.”

The Verdict: Turning point in the campaign?

While Bielsa and his players deserve some criticism for their league position, there is no doubt that injuries have been a core aspect of their struggles this season. It is so difficult to find a rhythm when so many important figures are sidelined so often (Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford spring to mind).

This latest update is a further sign that influential players are returning, giving the manager more options and keeping his squad healthy, allowing for greater rotation.

The hope is that the Burnley game will signal the start of an upturn in fortunes, enabling Leeds to pull away from the relegation battle and push towards mid-table once again.

Hatfield makes West Brom-Daryl Dike claim

West Brom will need to pay a ‘substantial loan fee’ if they want to sign Orlando City striker Daryl Dike in January, according to journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Baggies linked with Dike move

The Baggies had to settle for a 0-0 draw away to Barnsley on Friday night as they dropped points in the Championship promotion race.

It could be that Valerien Ismael delves into the transfer market next month, and one player they have been mooted with potentially signing is Dike. The 21-year-old has scored three goals in eight caps for the USA, as well as netting 19 times in just 41 appearances for MLS side Orlando.

The Latest: Hatfield makes Dike claim

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Hatfield admitted that Dike wouldn’t come cheap if West Brom plan to bring him to The Hawthorns in the January transfer window.

The journalist claimed: “Dike’s not a cheap player to pick up. We saw that when he went to Barnsley. I mean, they paid a substantial loan fee to bring him in at Oakwell and Albion would have to do the same thing.”

The Verdict: Worth the money

Dike showed during a loan spell at Barnsley what a force he can be in the Championship, scoring nine goals in 19 matches in the division last term. For that reason, West Brom should take a punt on him next month, strengthening their attacking options as they look to make a swift return to the Premier League.

Only Karlan Grant (nine) has scored more than four goals for Albion in the league this term, so Dike could be the man to add more firepower at a key point in the campaign, having been hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by his former Barnsley manager Ismael in the past.

I saw the pain O'Brien was in – Vettori

At tea Pakistan needed 86 more to win and the talk in the New Zealand dressing-room was focused on separating the Akmal brothers

The Akmals, Umar and Kamran, had flayed the New Zealand attack during the first innings in Dunedin and, at tea on the final day, they were all that stood between New Zealand and victory. Pakistan needed 86 more to win and the talk in the New Zealand dressing-room was focused on separating the brothers.”There was talk the whole way through of just hanging in there, if we put the ball in the right areas the wicket will take over,” Vettori said after his team secured a 1-0 lead in the series. “It was about breaking that partnership, probably in my own head about throwing the ball to Ober [Iain O’Brien] and Shane [Bond] and having a real crack at it.”New Zealand didn’t break through immediately after the break, though. Instead it was Pakistan that surged ahead with a flurry of boundaries from Kamran, while Umar sensibly rotated strike. They confidently whittled the runs required down to 56 when Shane Bond, in the fifth of an eight-over spell, held a sharp return catch to dismiss Umar. It was the finishing touch on a splendid comeback for the 34-year-old fast bowler, who was Man of the Match for his eight wickets.”It was perfect really,” Bond said when asked if his comeback could have been better. “I am pleased to come through. It was different playing with four bowlers, the first time I’ve done that. You bowled a spell, someone else was on, and then it was ‘Christ, they are going to give me the ball again,’ which is pretty tough.”I firmly believed that we were good enough to win the Test. Whether that was going to materialise or not was another matter. I suppose that’s why you want to play Test cricket, because it is a true test, it’s the mental highs and lows.”Another component of New Zealand’s four-man attack, Iain O’Brien, had suffered an injury as the situation was growing increasingly tense. Umar, before his dismissal, had hammered the ball back at O’Brien, dislocating the bowler’s finger as he attempted a tough return catch. He needed treatment and the physio spent a few minutes trying to straighten his digit.”I saw the pain he [O’Brien] was in, his eyes welled up, so he must have been in agony, and also it [the finger] was out of place,” Vettori said. “He had a tough time in the first innings, [so] for him to bounce back and bowl as well as that showed a lot of heart.”I’ve always backed Ober [O’Brien], I’ve always liked the way he bowls, liked the effort he brings to a game. He always wants the ball, you saw the turnaround from the first innings. I probably bowled him a little bit too much, kept him a bit fresher in this one and he responded. That spell with him and Shane after tea was the real difference.”It was Kamran’s wicket, lbw O’Brien, to a delivery which cut back sharply that Vettori singled out as “the one where everyone started to believe” New Zealand could win. From thereon, though Pakistan’s tail resisted, it was only a matter of time and it was Vettori who mopped up the last two wickets to secure a 32-run win.Vettori also emphasised the effect a small, but vocal, crowd at the University Oval had on his team. “Special mention to the atmosphere that was there, the crowd – however small – was amazing. It lifted everyone and it was almost the first thing we spoke about once we came off the field. I felt there were 80,000 people out there rather than how many ever there were.” Bond also said that the crowd’s involvement whenever the game was “drifting away” gave everyone a lift.Vettori, however, was not entirely pleased with New Zealand’s performance over all five days, saying there was “some frustration” that they had managed to set a target of only 251 even after securing a 97-run lead in the first innings. “We want to control the game better than we did. We put ourselves in a difficult and precarious situation, but it’s always a fourth-innings wicket, and if you look at the history of the game, there’s not many teams that get 250 on the last day of a Test match.”

– O papel do nosso comandante é fundamental. Ele nos dá muita liberdade. Me lembro que quando cheguei aqui no Botafogo, a primeira coisa que ele fez foi me perguntar como eu estava me sentindo. Ele dá essa liberdade pra gente – opinou – completou.

Moyes must unleash Fornals vs Arsenal

West Ham United’s hectic festive fixture list continues later this evening as they make the short trip across London to face Arsenal in the Premier League.

Only a few days ago, the Irons were held by Burnley up at Turf Moor, making it just one win in their last four matches across all competitions. And heading into kick-off, their place inside the top four is at risk as the Gunners could leapfrog them with a victory at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

This encounter will be their fifth game since the turn of the month, so manager David Moyes has plenty to ponder in terms of team selection, not least because he is dealing with substantial injury problems in defence.

Both Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma seem likely to be out for the majority – if not all of – the remainder of the season, whilst academy gem Ben Johnson has only just returned to training this week and doubts still linger over Aaron Cresswell, who has not been seen since the Manchester City defeat.

However, having kept a clean sheet with the four players to replace the aforementioned quartet, it is in attack where the worry may lie as the Hammers registered only three shots on target from 16 attempts against the Clarets. It was also another blank for Michail Antonio, who has scored only once in ten games now.

Is it a case of him not being provided with adequate service? Or him being completely knackered from the sheer volume of minutes as Moyes’ only senior striker? Perhaps a combination of both.

It’s a catch 22 for the Scot as he cannot really turn to any other options in the role, having not signed a backup forward in nearly two years now, so it would be wise for him to help support him in the best way he can and that may be through the introduction of Pablo Fornals, who has been snubbed in successive league games for the first time this season.

The £18m-rated dynamo would be a far better option than Said Benrahma, whose struggles continue just like with Antonio. The Irons’ squad cannot afford to carry the pair of them against a side like Arsenal.

Benrahma has provided just one goal and one assist in his last 14 league appearances and six games without either, per Transfermarkt.

By contrast, the Spain international has doubled that tally (two goals, two assists) in the same timeframe and on his day, he could hold the keys to unlocking the Gunners’ defence this evening.

In terms of average WhoScored rating, Fornals edges Benrahma too, whilst he is also clear for creating chances, averaging 1.4 key passes per outing, 0.3 more than the Algerian.

According to club legend Trevor Sinclair, the attacking maestro has been a bargain at £25m for the club.

“Fornals’ rise has been incredible. [Spurs midfielder Giovani] Lo Celso has stood still, gone backwards,” he claimed to talkSPORT last month. “Two players who were on level pegging – one of them is absolutely flying and the other one’s gone backwards. Look at what Pablo Fornals is doing now at West Ham – he’s done unbelievable.”

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners side have been a little suspect against the teams inside the top six this season and Moyes can continue that trend by unleashing Fornals back into his starting XI here in north London this evening.

AND in other news, Moyes handed big West Ham injury boost this week…
