Jones: Everton must make Burnley rue defeat

Adam Jones has claimed that Everton must now make Burnley ‘regret’ their 2-0 loss at Norwich City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Great results for Everton

After the Merseyside club beat Manchester United 1-0 at Goodison Park in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, other results at the bottom of the table also went their way over the weekend.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Watford lost 3-0 at home to Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, while Burnley then went and lost to Norwich. It means that Frank Lampard’s team are now four points clear of the relegation zone with just eight matches left to play.

The Latest: Jones reacts to Premier League results

Taking to Twitter, Liverpool Echo journalist Jones has now given his reaction to the results, claiming that the Clarets dropping off after beating Everton 3-2 in midweek was a ‘real let off’ for Frank Lampard’s side.

He chimed: “Well that is quite the weekend of results for Everton. In some ways, it’s a real let off.

“Burnley really dropped the ball after what seemed like a defining victory in midweek. Everton need to make them absolutely regret that over their next few games, whatever it takes.”

The Verdict: Not over yet

The race to secure Premier League safety is certainly not over yet, but of course the weekend’s results provide a huge step in the right direction for the Toffees.

Some of their next few fixtures look particularly daunting, with a trip to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby followed by a home match against Chelsea to come.

There could be plenty of twists and turns along the way, but Lampard will be hoping that Everton’s win against the Red Devils can install some much-needed confidence in his team, ready for the rollercoaster ahead.

Zaheer Khan, India’s strike fast bowler, has been ruled out of the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka due to a shoulder injury. The tour includes three Tests, followed by a tri-series in Dambulla, also involving New Zealand. The BCCI, in a statement, has announced that the Karnataka fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun will replace him.Zaheer was rested for the recent tour of Zimbabwe in order to preserve himself for the busy season ahead. He participated in the Asia Cup in Dambulla and played in all four of India’s games. The BCCI did not reveal the cause of the injury or for how long he has been adviced to rest. The indication is that he will miss the Test leg of the tour, at least, as the squad for the ODI tri-series will be announced later.Zaheer however didn’t reveal much in his Twitter feed: “Shoulder is troubling me a little need to sort it out …hope to be back soon … Important season ahead …”Zaheer’s absence will come as a big blow to India, whose fast bowlers haven’t been up to the mark of late, due to injuries and loss of form. That leaves a lot of responsibility on the likes of Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth to carry the attack in Sri Lanka.Mithun has been on the fringes for the last few months after performing impressively for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy, where he was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker. He was rewarded with a call-up to the national squad for the Tests against South Africa earlier this year and an international debut in the ODIs that followed. He was withdrawn from the India A squad in England to replace the injured seamer Vinay Kumar in Zimbabwe, but didn’t get a game. He rejoined his team-mates in England for the one-dayers and in his most recent outing on Friday, taking 3 for 49 against West Indies A.The tour begins on July 18 with the first Test in Galle.

Preview: Celtic vs Bodo/Glimt

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side return to European action this evening, with Bodo/Glimt making the trip to Parkhead for the Europa Conference League play-off round meeting.

After being narrowly eliminated in the Europa League group stage, the newly-formed Conference League offers the 56-year-old and his side a second chance at going on a European cup run this season – and potentially even the opportunity to pick up the club’s first international trophy since the Lisbon Lions’ European Cup triumph back in 1967.

As such, Postecoglou will undoubtedly be looking to field his strongest possible XI tonight, with sweeping changes from the initial lineup against Raith Rovers last weekend expected to be made by the Greek-Australian coach.

So, how many alterations will the 56-year-old make to the side that started the 4-0 Scottish Cup victory last time out? Here’s how we think Celtic could line up against Bodo/Glimt, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Postecoglou recently revealing that Josip Juranovic will be available for selection after recovering from illness, as well as confirming that Mikey Johnston and Yosuke Ideguchi will not feature this evening, we predict that the 56-year-old will make eight changes to the team that lined up against Rovers last weekend.

Three of these changes come in the back four, with Liam Scales, Stephen Welsh and Anthony Ralston making way for the returns of Greg Taylor, Carl Starfelt and the fit-again Juranovic respectively.

In the middle of the park, Callum McGregor takes the place of Nir Bitton in the more defensive role of Postecoglou’s midfield three, while the £15k-per-week Tom Rogic – who Brendan Rogers previously dubbed an “elusive” player – makes way for the 21-year-old Matt O’Riley – who Kieran Devlin labelled a consistent “8/10” performer.

Finally, there are wholesale changes in the front three, with the aforementioned Johnston being ruled out due to injury, while Giorgos Giakoumakis and James Forrest also drop out of the XI, with Jota, Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda staring on the left-wing, right-wing and at centre-forward respectively.

England’s Kevin Pietersen made his first appearance for Hampshire for two years in today’s Friends Provident t20 clash with Surrey but was upstaged by opening batsman Jimmy Adams.Pietersen, released by the ECB for one match, came in at number three and made 15 from 10 balls before lifting a catch to long-off. Pietersen hit three fours in an over from Surrey pace bowler and former Hampshire colleague Chris Tremlett but then carelessly drove Chris Schofield to Matt Spriegel.Adams went on to make 101 not out, his first century in the competition, and share in a stand of 144 in 12 overs with Sean Ervine for the third wicket. Adams reached his landmark in the final over but needed a bit of luck – he was caught on the long-on boundary off a no-ball when on 99. Hampshire finished with 201 for 2 and Surrey made a reasonable fist of their chase before going down by 10 runs. They made 191 for 9 but were never seriously threatening the Hampshire total.Adams hit four sixes and seven fours and faced 65 balls. Ervine made 54 not out and all the Surrey bowlers took a pasting on an easy-paced wicket. Surrey made a promising start through opener Steven Davies, who hit two sixes in his 24, and their hopes were renewed when Mark Ramprakash and Andrew Symonds were putting on 64 in seven overs for the fourth wicket.Ramprakash was in dominant form as he hit his side’s top score of 61 before pulling Australian pace bowler Dan Christian to square leg, where Adams held a spectacular catch diving forward. Ramprakash struck three sixes and six fours in his 41-ball innings but his dismissal at 139 signalled a rapid Surrey decline.Left-arm pace bowler Chris Wood finished with figures of three for 30 and veteran Dominic Cork took two wickets in an over, those of Younus Khan and Spriegel, as Surrey lost wickets in a vain chase for their second win in two days. Cork took two for 27 from his four overs while Adams completed a remarkable personal day with a superb run-out of tail-ender Andre Nel.

Leeds: Kevin Phillips reacts to Raphinha update

Pundit Kevin Phillips has been reacting to a contract update regarding Leeds United star Raphinha, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: New deal close

The Brazilian is thought to be closing in on a ‘huge’ Elland Road contract following positive discussions between the club and Deco, Raphinha’s agent.

A Leeds source has since told Football Insider that an improved deal for the winger is to protect his value, with the club aware it could start to fall in the summer, should he not pen an extension.

The Whites are hoping that a fresh contract would increase Raphinha’s potential market valuation in the summer from £35m to £60m, with West Ham showing late interest last month.

The Latest: Phillips reacts

Phillips, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider over a new deal for the Leeds star.

When asked if it could keep him at the club in the long run, Phillips described a new contract as a ‘great gesture’ but still expects the player to depart.

“I think it makes no difference.

“Whether you put a player on a new contract or not, if a big club comes in they generally get the player.

“It’s a great gesture. It’s all they can do really, show the ambition to say: ‘We’re offering a good deal to these players. We want them to stay.’

“Ultimately it’s the player’s decision and I think new deals, nowadays, don’t really make a big deal of difference.”

The Verdict: Summer exit?

It was good to see that Leeds rebuffed all interest in Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips last month, however, the summer window will soon be upon us, when rumours will more than likely begin once again.

Raphinha has broken into Brazil’s national side since joining Leeds and has comfortably been the best-rated Whites player this season, resulting in links with Wst Ham, Bayern Munich and Liverpool in recent months.

On that basis, and with Leeds flirting with relegation this season, it could be a matter of time until he joins one of the biggest sides in Europe, but when Leeds sell, they will hopefully get the best deal possible, especially with a new deal in the pipeline.

In other news: Worrying Kalvin Phillips update emerges on Saturday after return to training.
