Celtic backed to sign new goalkeeper

Former Scotland international Alan Hutton has backed Celtic to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, offering a stronger backup to Joe Hart and replacing Vasilis Barkas.

The Lowdown: Goalkeeping outgoings?

The Hoops have enjoyed a superb season, lying on the cusp of another Scottish Premiership title, and Hart has played his part between the sticks.

The 35-year-old has started 32 league games, as well as five in the Europa League, proving that he can still perform at a high level.

Barkas has been linked with a move away from Celtic after struggling for playing time, so a new stopper could be required in the summer transfer window.

Bodo/Glimt ‘keeper Nikita Haikin is one player who has been tipped to come in.

The Latest: Pundit talks up new signing

Hutton, a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live who of course spent some of his playing career across town at Rangers, was reacting to news from a Celtic source that they will look to replace Barkas.

He told Football Insider:

“I always think it’s a difficult one. Obviously, everybody wants to play but the goalkeepers are a specialised position.

“You want to push somebody on but if you’re second choice, you know you’re not going to play an awful lot. So you have to have someone in there with a really good, strong mentality. It can be difficult.

“Everybody needs competition. Joe Hart’s no different. I still believe he can play for a good number of years, he’s got a lot of football left in him.

“He’ll want that pressure on his shoulders as well so he performs at a top level. The only problem is you need to get somebody out, Barkas or Bain or whoever.

“You can’t bring in another keeper and be sitting there with four goalkeepers. The squad isn’t balanced. That’ll probably happen first and foremost but of course, they’ll need somebody in to challenge.”

The Verdict: Makes complete sense

A stronger deputy to Hart makes perfect sense going into next season, especially with Champions League football looking likely to return to Parkhead.

At 35, Hart certainly isn’t getting any younger, while an injury to him would require a good ‘keeper to fill the void left by him and not look overawed doing the job.

The money received for qualifying for Europe’s best club competition would generate more transfer funds, increasing Ange Postecoglou’s chances of bringing in a more-than-competent rival for Hart.

Wolves: Ait-Nouri struggled v Brighton

Wolves fell to a fourth defeat in five Premier League matches as Brighton comfortably won 3-0 at Molineux this afternoon.

A penalty from Alexis MacAllister, who had missed another spot-kick prior to scoring, and goals from Leandro Trossard and Yves Bissouma confirmed victory for the Seagulls, which sees the Old Gold’s hopes of qualifying for Europe suffer another hefty blow.

Bruno Lage’s outfit are three points behind seventh-placed West Ham with four games to go. Securing a European place is still possible, but the major concern for Lage and the Molineux faithful will be the lack of goals, with just two in their last four games, having not found the net in any of their last three league matches.

No Wolves player could hold their head up high after today’s performance, but wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri particularly struggled.

Ait-Nouri failed Lage today

The Frenchman made 65 touches throughout the 90 minutes, not a poor total by any means, but he lost the ball a whopping 25 times at a rate of once every 2.6 touches. Moreover, the left-wing-back only completed a third of his dribbles, whilst making just 21 successful passes at an accuracy of 72%.

Most of Ait-Nouri’s play came in his own half, but whenever the youngster flurried forward, there was little quality in the final third, with no shots and zero successful crosses out of nine attempted.

In fairness, the 20-year-old contributed defensively, making an impressive four tackles along with one interception and one clearance.

On the whole, however, the wing-back’s performance would certainly have frustrated him, his manager and the Wolves faithful on a day where it seemed that nothing could go right for the hosts.

Described as “inconsistent” by journalist Tim Spiers last season, Ait-Nouri has struggled to shake off that label this term, with today being the 20-year-old’s third start in Wolves’ last nine matches, coming off of the bench for a brief cameo against Newcastle and remaining an unused substitute for the other five games.

In total, the youngster has made 19 Premier League appearances so far this season, contributing four assists. However, it seems as though he is yet to fully earn Lage’s trust, something that he will have to work hard to do over pre-season in order to beat Jonny Otto to a regular starting spot.

Overall, it was a day to forget for the Wolves passenger, who failed his manager with a wasteful performance.

Drummond leads Scotland in final

Gordon Drummond will lead Scotland in the Intercontinental Cup final against Afghanistan, but their squad will be missing the services of three batsmen

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2010Gordon Drummond will lead Scotland in the Intercontinental Cup final against Afghanistan, but their squad will be missing the services of three batsmen. Ryan Watson Moneeb Iqbal are unavailable due to work commitments while Ewan Chalmers will be writing his university examinations.Scotland’s previous Intercontinental Cup fixture was against Ireland in August, when they played out a draw, before earning a walkover against Zimbabwe XI. Scotland had refused to tour Zimbabwe for their fixture scheduled for September 26 following advise from the country’s government and ministers over issues pertaining to political reform and rule of law. Subsequently, Zimbabwe refused to play at a neutral venue and decided to forfeit the fixture, paving the way for Scotland, who were behind on the points table, to play Afghanistan in the final in Dubai. The teams play the final on December 2.The Scotland team leaves for Dubai on November 23. “After a long, hard season of cricket which started last January in Kenya, the final will be an excellent opportunity to finish on a real high,” coach Peter Steindl said. “This group of players has worked exceptionally hard to reach the final and we will prepare thoroughly for the hard challenge that we know Afghanistan will pose. They have been the dominant team in this competition to date, but we are confident we can compete well against them.”Scotland squad: Gordon Drummond (capt), Fraser Watts, Ryan Flannigan, Kyle Coetzer, Preston Mommsen, Richie Berrington, Neil McCallum, Gregor Maiden, Majid Haq, Matthew Parker, Ross Lyons, Simon Smith, Gordon Goudie, Dewald Nel.

Everton dealt huge injury setback

Everton will travel the short distance across Stanley Park to visit their fierce rivals in the Merseyside Derby this afternoon, and Frank Lampard has revealed a huge setback in his squad ahead of the game.

What’s the latest?

The Toffees boss took to his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon to deliver an update on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s availability with speculated doubt about his inclusion in the side in the remaining Premier League games, following a quad injury.

When asked if the striker would return to action next week against Chelsea, Lampard told the press (via Liverpool Echo):

“We’ll see.”

“No one is a machine, this is a tough industry. There is an element of bad luck. Dominic has had a bad run.”

Lampard will be gutted

Despite only winning one of their last 22 Premier League fixtures against Liverpool, Everton have had a talisman in Calvert-Lewin when it comes to the derby so Lampard will surely be absolutely gutted to lose him for the occasion.

The 25-year-old goal machine has played in ten league games against their Merseyside rivals with a pretty decent record of results against them, losing four, drawing five and winning one in his time at Everton, delivering two assists and one goal.

With that being said, his presence on the pitch at Anfield this afternoon will be a huge miss and owing to the Toffee’s vulnerable position in their relegation fight right now Calvert-Lewin’s injury could not have come at a worse time.

Lampard will have to hope that Richarlison can fill his teammate’s boots in the centre-forward position today, the Brazilian has played in one less league derby than his strike partner, but has scored one more goal against the Kopites and delivered one assist, so he should be able to offer a similar force in the forward line this afternoon.

Everton could find themselves dropped into the bottom three in the Premier League table this afternoon before they even kick off if their relegation competitors Burnley beat Wolverhampton Wanderers this afternoon, and Lampard will need to make sure his team are motivated and focused despite the result.
