Leeds turned down Harry Winks signing

Leeds United turned down the opportunity to sign Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks on loan this season, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Midfielder needed?

The Whites haven’t done a huge amount of business in the summer transfer window, with Kristoffer Klaesson and Junior Firpo coming in, as well as Jack Harrison making his move from Manchester City permanent.

There is still time for new signings to join, however, and midfield is arguably an area that requires more depth, with Kalvin Phillips perhaps relied upon too heavily at times.

The Latest: Leeds turn down Winks move

Despite this, The Athletic‘s Hay claims that Leeds declined the opportunity to bring in Winks on loan, with the 25-year-old seemingly not part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans.

He has made 176 appearances for Spurs and won ten caps for England – Mauricio Pochettino once hailed him as ‘amazing’ – but he missed out on a place at Euro 2020.

The Verdict: Strange decision

Marcelo Bielsa is seemingly content with his squad, but it does seem odd not to have signed Winks, considering he was available on loan.

It may simply be that the Leeds boss doesn’t feel he fits into his style of play, but he is still a proven Premier League midfielder who could have added more quality in the middle of the park at a minimal cost.

Winks averaged 1.3 key passes per game in the Europa League last season, highlighting his quality on the ball, and he may have dovetailed nicely with Phillips.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly interested in a late move for one player. Find out who it is here.

Wolves: Coady set to start for England

Some Wolves fans have been left gushing over news which has emerged involving Conor Coady.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of England’s FIFA World Cup qualifier at home to Andorra this evening, Gareth Southgate has confirmed (via Talking Wolves) that the Molineux skipper will start.

Coady has made five senior appearances for the Three Lions so far, scoring one goal, and was named in their Euro 2020 squad, although he did not get on the pitch during the tournament this summer (Transfermarkt).

The game against Andorra in front of fans at Wembley will give him another chance to impress Southgate, who will hopefully keep the 28-year-old in his plans when the World Cup finals come around, so long as England can qualify for the tournament.

Goodwin and Rashid bask in the sun

Martin Williamson reports on the final day of the Championship clash between Sussex and Yorkshire at Hove

Martin Williamson at Hove27-Sep-2008Yorkshire 400 for 9 dec drew with Sussex 207 and 397 for 9 dec (Goodwin 118, Martin-Jenkins 56, Rashid 7-136)
ScorecardEven before the formalities at Canterbury had been completed there was a slightly low-key feel to the final day at Hove, with both sides knowing a draw would be enough to keep them up and seemingly happy to settle for just that in glorious late-summer sunshine. A flurry of wickets shortly before lunch briefly raised Yorkshire’s hopes of forcing a win, but Murray Goodwin’s sixth hundred of the summer and a fifty from Robin Martin-Jenkins did enough to ensure that Sussex finished with a draw.Goodwin’s 1343 runs have been instrumental in keeping Sussex afloat this summer. Here he started confidently and, aside from briefly taking a back seat while Chris Adams played a half-hour cameo, was the dominant batsman. He played some lovely shots early on, the pick being a cut off Adil Rashid followed by a perfect sweep three balls later, and by the time he brought up his century he had almost ensured Sussex were safe. His innings of 118 ended tamely when he edged an attempted sweep off Rashid to slip. That gave Rashid his sixth wicket of the innings and his fifth of the day. He bowled a marathon 30-over, three-and-a-half hour spell unchanged from the Sea End without showing any signs of weariness, and with excellent variation in pace and flight. Such was his captain’s confidence in him that he bowled right through the taking of the new ball. He returned at the death to take another, finishing with 7 for 136.Goodwin’s efforts were overshadowed by Adams, the outgoing Sussex captain, who came in to a standing ovation midway through the morning, seconds after Kent’s defeat, and therefore his side’s safety, had been confirmed. That he was given a guard of honour by the Yorkshire fielders and the manner with which he exited, waving his bat to all corners, hinted that this might be his last first-class innings. He refused to be drawn, only saying that he hoped to be with the club next season “in some capacity”.If it was his last hurrah as a player, he certainly went out with a flourish, twice on-driving Matthew Hoggard for four, sending Adil Rashid over the short midwicket boundary in successive overs, and, best of all, skipping down the track to loft David Wainwright back over his head for a third six. His run-a-ball 35 ended when he looked to do the same to Rashid but got under the ball and was caught at mid-off.Michael Yardy only added 12 to his overnight 60 when he was caught at short leg looking to work the ball into the on side, and Matt Prior gave Rashid his second of the morning when he sliced a drive to point. On the stroke of lunch Rashid completed his five-for when had Luke Wright leg-before, to give Yorkshire an opening. But Martin-Jenkins played with confidence in the afternoon, all the more so after Goodwin’s departure, using his reach to stifle the spinners and drive the quick bowlers, and when the ball was dug in he was quick on the pull. Ollie Raynor kept him company for an hour until he was caught at the second attempt by wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy off Wainwright, once more sending Yorkshire into an interval with a tantalising sniff of victory.Once they had failed to make an immediate post-tea interval, the game was allowed to meander to its premature conclusion. By the time Martin-Jenkins fell leg-before to Rashid in his first over from the Cromwell Road End it was of little more than statistical relevance, although the crowd, savouring every last moment of the 171st day of the longest first-class summer on record, stayed to the bitter end.In defiance of how late in the year it is, it was perfect cricket-watching weather. The deckchairs at the Cromwell Road End were fully occupied early on, ice-cream sales were brisk, and there was enough reddening bare flesh on display to suggest this was mid-summer instead of early autumn. The only giveaway was the tannoy giving out Brighton & Hove Albion’s half-time score at the tea interval. There have been later finishes to the season, although not since 1880, but if the ECB has its way we might be watching into early October by 2010 to fit in the plethora of Twenty20 cricket. If the conditions are like today, few will complain.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Weston McKennie links

Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, according to Tuttosport, cited by MondoBiancoNero.com.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace supporters have been reacting to the update on social media.

Juventus are looking for cash offers for the USA international, with Spurs failing with a swap deal involving Tanguy Ndombele.

Tuttosport, cited by MondoBiancoNero.com, claim that Palace and Villa may have made bids for the 22-year-old, with the Italian giants looking to trim their midfield ranks in the final days of the window.

McKennie is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt and Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier in the week that it would take an ‘important bid’ of more than €25/30m for his services.

The Eagles are after a midfielder before the end of the month, so McKennie could be an alternative option to Watford’s Will Hughes.

Palace fans react

@CPFCtransfersHQ shared the recent claim on McKennie on Twitter. This is what these Palace fans had to say in reply, with one describing a possible transfer as ‘absolutely incredible’.

Unruly crowd upsets Ponting

Ricky Ponting has condemned the crowd behaviour in St Vincent that delayed the end of the opening one-day international by ten minutes

Ricky Ponting has condemned the crowd behaviour in St Vincent that delayed the end of the opening one-day international by ten minutes. West Indies were nine down when Darren Sammy was correctly given out bowled, but the trouble began after Sammy waited near the boundary while the television umpire reviewed the decision. There was no big screen at the stadium and when Sammy, who had 33, left the field the crowd threw bottles and rubbish on to the arena. The dismissal was initially unclear but the replays showed the ball had brushed off stump before bouncing off the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin’s pads.During the crowd disturbance the Australians congregated on the pitch and were joined by James Hopes, who had been fielding on the boundary. “There’s no room for that in the international game,” Ricky Ponting told AAP of the incident. “Luckily today they did miss James, otherwise it could have been a bit nasty.”The rubbish was cleared by the local workers and the match finished with Australia recording an 84-run victory. Julian Jack, the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association president, said he was disappointed by the incident, but felt it was handled well.”We had more than 135 police at the ground,” he said. “When the trouble started, I thought they responded very quickly. This is the first time anything like this has happened in the 20 or so years that we have hosted international cricket.”It would seem the umpires may have made some decisions that were not in favour of the crowd, and the crowd then incorrectly took things into their own hands. It is disappointing that this happened, but at least no one was hurt and the outcome of the game wasn’t affected.”John Dyson, West Indies’ coach, told : “I don’t like to see bottle-throwing or anything thrown on the field at all. I like to see enthusiasm from the crowd and I like to see the crowd support both teams, but I don’t like to see anything thrown onto the field anywhere in the world.”I can’t tell what the crowd could see from where they are. The reaction was ‘wait, hang on’. At the instance of the decision being made, there was some doubt, and it was not instantaneous. There was consultation between the umpires, and it was just reaction what people saw. Once the umpire said Sammy was out, he left.”

Wolves: Raul Jimenez fit to face Leicester

Last season Wolves were rocked by significant injury blows throughout the season.

As the Old Gold collapsed to a 13th-placed finish, they witnessed a campaign play out without Raul Jimenez for the vast majority of it. Jonny, Fernando Marcal, Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto were further players to pick up nasty injury problems.

Although Jonny and Neto are set to miss the opening weekend’s clash against Leicester, Wolves have received good news on the injury front. That’s because Jimenez is fully fit and ready to take on the Foxes at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference yesterday after being asked whether the Mexican was ready to return, Bruno Lage revealed: “Yes. We worked for six weeks very well. Progression OK with the doctor. No problems. He is fit and ready to go.”

This news will come as a monumental boost to Wolves’ hopes of winning their first match under the new management team.

Jimenez has been missing since fracturing his skull towards the end of November, when the Midlands outfit took on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The striker wasn’t seen again until pre-season when he finally made a sufficient enough recovery to return.

When he was on the sidelines, Wolves struggled significantly. Pedro Neto and Ruben Neves ended the campaign as the club’s joint-top scorers in the league but they amassed just five apiece.

Club-record signing Fabio Silva could only find the net on four occasions while Willian Jose beat the goalkeeper just once after his six-month loan deal from January onwards.

All of that culminated in a dismal end to the season for Wolves. Their ambition of achieving European football swiftly faded away as they finished in the bottom half of the table for the first time since being promoted in 2018.

Jimenez has scored an impressive 48 goals in 110 outings for the club, which means he is undoubtedly their star man up top, so to have him fit for the start of the campaign should leave Lage absolutely delighted.

AND in other news, Wolves could find their own Pedri in “outstanding” rarely-seen 17 y/o weapon…

Pundit urges Nat Phillips to leave Liverpool after breakout term

Paul Jewell has warned Nat Phillips may have to leave Liverpool in order to reach the same heights as last season.

Phillips, who joined the Reds in 2016 having originally come through the ranks at Bolton Wanderers, got his first taste of regular Premier League football when he was thrown into Jurgen Klopp’s side last term.

The central defender made 20 appearances in all competitions as he played a key role in helping Liverpool overcome their defensive crisis.

Season-ending injuries suffered by Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez resulted in Phillips being handed an opportunity to show his capabilities as the Reds looked to defend their Premier League crown.

Although Manchester City comfortably clinched the title, Phillips’ fine performances have resulted in interest from Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton, Newcastle United and Burnley.

With van Dijk and Gomez back in the fold, former Premier League manager Jewell believes 24-year-old Phillips should depart Anfield in a bid to build on his promising campaign.

Jewell, who came through the ranks at Liverpool during his playing days, exclusively told Football FanCast: “I would imagine that once you’ve had the taste of playing at the top level, you want to play week in, week out, whether that’s for Liverpool or not.

“There’s nothing quite like playing and I’m sure Nat Phillips doesn’t want to go back to playing in League Cup and FA Cup games five or six times a season.

“That’s the problem you have when you give players a chance – the hunger and taste for it is there now.”
