Celtic winger Jota will miss the League Cup final against Hibernian later this month through injury, Sky Sports’ Alison Conroy reports.

The 22-year-old has proven to be an excellent addition under Ange Postecoglou, becoming a regular in Celtic’s front three.

Jota has been involved in 14 goals in his 18 appearances for the club, with the manager wanting to exercise their option-to-buy clause for the winger before the end of the season.

It would cost Celtic £6.5m to secure Jota’s services on a permanent basis, but he’ll miss his first final as a Hoops player through injury.

The Latest: Hampden Park absence

Jota suffered a hamstring issue against Hearts earlier this month, which is expected to keep him out for ‘a few weeks’.

Conroy reported Postecoglou’s pre-Real Betis press conference on Twitter on Wednesday, with the manager confirming Jota won’t be available against Hibs.

The Verdict: Hammer blow

Jota has proven to be a big player for Celtic with his reliable and consistent production in the final third, racking up eight goals and six assists so far this season.

You always want your best players ready to go for big games, so his absence will be a blow for Postecoglou, who may have to rely on youngsters Mikey Johnston and Liel Abada to fill in for the time being.

Described as ‘brilliant’ by Frank McAvennie, Jota may well return to the side before the winter break, but if he doesn’t, the next time fans see him, he could be a Celtic player on a permanent basis.

Crystal Palace’s positive start to the season means that they’re unlikely to ‘go all out’ in January, according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge.

The lowdown

Back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Wolves saw Palace climb into the top half of the Premier League table prior to the international break. Patrick Vieira has lost only two of his first 11 league matches in charge, and those were away to Chelsea and Liverpool, both of whom currently reside in the top four.

The start of the Vieira era was greeted with a £66m summer spend, and Palace didn’t sell any players to fund that spree (via Transfermarkt).

There have been some rumours of further activity in January, with Transfer Market Web reporting that £10.2m-valued Eddie Nketiah is a target for the Eagles. The Arsenal striker is England under-21s’ all-time record goalscorer with 16 in just 17 caps at that level.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Bridge suggested that Palace chairman Steve Parish would be far more likely to invest if the club were nervously looking over their shoulder in the Premier League table.

He said: “Knowing Steve Parish like I do, I don’t think he will go all out in January when things have gone well.

“It’s usually when they’re a bit worried and looking behind them that they would spend but I don’t think they’re looking behind at the moment. They’re looking at what’s in front of them in a positive sense.”

The verdict

This is an entirely understandable stance from Parish if true. Palace’s current squad are motoring quite nicely and you wonder if they might try to keep some cash in reserve so that they can make a bid to sign Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher permanently.

The 21-year-old, who has scored four goals and set up two more, is comfortably Palace’s top-rated player for 2021/22 on WhoScored with an average of 7.5/10. However, based on those displays, his value is rising all the time, so it may become increasingly difficult for the Eagles to keep hold of him beyond the end of the current campaign.

It seems that if Palace don’t plan to spend in January, that’s a good sign as it suggests that their trajectory is very positive.

Murray Goodwin’s masterful, unbeaten 80 completed the run-chase after a sharp and efficient display in the field from Michael Yardy’s team.Goodwin has completed many harder run-chases than this for Sussex, but few with such rewards riding on the outcome, and was in control throughout as he brought up fifty from 43 balls. His Championship form has been poor this season and he showed some emotion as he acknowledged the crowd and his team-mates. His one scare came on 74 when he could have been run out as a modicum of pressure began to tell, but a square-driven boundary left four needed from the last over. The result was more comfortable than the two-ball margin suggests.However, despite helping his team take a step towards the potential for a huge pay-day in India, Goodwin won’t be there himself as he has a ‘cooling-off’ period after ending his ICL ties and is ineligible until the 2010 event. Nothing is simple in the evolving Twenty20 world.It was a disappointing performance from Northamptonshire, who arrived to Finals Day as the outsiders but had shown their capability this season in Twenty20. The home side was rocked first ball when Tyagi took out Rob Quiney, and then slipped to 4 for 24 with each of India’s first five bowlers finding success. Cooper’s innings contained six fours and a pair of sixes and stood poles apart from the next highest contribution, 8.India themselves were in a spot of bother at 3 for 19, Peter George taking 2 for 9 in four overs, but Ajinkya Rahane and Abhishek Nayar steered the chase thereafter. Rahane finished unbeaten on 43 from 55 balls while Nayar (30 from 19) assisted capably.

Many Everton fans have been left raging as some early team news has emerged ahead of their game away at Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of their match in the Premier League, Rafa Benitez has now revealed (via Phil Kirkbride) that Yerry Mina, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all remain out injured and therefore will not play any part in the fixture.

All four players made at least 29 appearances for the Goodison Park faithful last season (Transfermarkt), showing just how important they are to the team and the squad, but now the Merseyside club face even more of an uphill battle without them.

Reigning champions City are currently in second spot in the table, three points behind Chelsea, and will be hungry to catch up to them with all three points at the Etihad Stadium, and with four key players out for the Toffees, it should be an easier task for them.
