– O papel do nosso comandante é fundamental. Ele nos dá muita liberdade. Me lembro que quando cheguei aqui no Botafogo, a primeira coisa que ele fez foi me perguntar como eu estava me sentindo. Ele dá essa liberdade pra gente – opinou – completou.

I saw the pain O'Brien was in – Vettori

At tea Pakistan needed 86 more to win and the talk in the New Zealand dressing-room was focused on separating the Akmal brothers

The Akmals, Umar and Kamran, had flayed the New Zealand attack during the first innings in Dunedin and, at tea on the final day, they were all that stood between New Zealand and victory. Pakistan needed 86 more to win and the talk in the New Zealand dressing-room was focused on separating the brothers.”There was talk the whole way through of just hanging in there, if we put the ball in the right areas the wicket will take over,” Vettori said after his team secured a 1-0 lead in the series. “It was about breaking that partnership, probably in my own head about throwing the ball to Ober [Iain O’Brien] and Shane [Bond] and having a real crack at it.”New Zealand didn’t break through immediately after the break, though. Instead it was Pakistan that surged ahead with a flurry of boundaries from Kamran, while Umar sensibly rotated strike. They confidently whittled the runs required down to 56 when Shane Bond, in the fifth of an eight-over spell, held a sharp return catch to dismiss Umar. It was the finishing touch on a splendid comeback for the 34-year-old fast bowler, who was Man of the Match for his eight wickets.”It was perfect really,” Bond said when asked if his comeback could have been better. “I am pleased to come through. It was different playing with four bowlers, the first time I’ve done that. You bowled a spell, someone else was on, and then it was ‘Christ, they are going to give me the ball again,’ which is pretty tough.”I firmly believed that we were good enough to win the Test. Whether that was going to materialise or not was another matter. I suppose that’s why you want to play Test cricket, because it is a true test, it’s the mental highs and lows.”Another component of New Zealand’s four-man attack, Iain O’Brien, had suffered an injury as the situation was growing increasingly tense. Umar, before his dismissal, had hammered the ball back at O’Brien, dislocating the bowler’s finger as he attempted a tough return catch. He needed treatment and the physio spent a few minutes trying to straighten his digit.”I saw the pain he [O’Brien] was in, his eyes welled up, so he must have been in agony, and also it [the finger] was out of place,” Vettori said. “He had a tough time in the first innings, [so] for him to bounce back and bowl as well as that showed a lot of heart.”I’ve always backed Ober [O’Brien], I’ve always liked the way he bowls, liked the effort he brings to a game. He always wants the ball, you saw the turnaround from the first innings. I probably bowled him a little bit too much, kept him a bit fresher in this one and he responded. That spell with him and Shane after tea was the real difference.”It was Kamran’s wicket, lbw O’Brien, to a delivery which cut back sharply that Vettori singled out as “the one where everyone started to believe” New Zealand could win. From thereon, though Pakistan’s tail resisted, it was only a matter of time and it was Vettori who mopped up the last two wickets to secure a 32-run win.Vettori also emphasised the effect a small, but vocal, crowd at the University Oval had on his team. “Special mention to the atmosphere that was there, the crowd – however small – was amazing. It lifted everyone and it was almost the first thing we spoke about once we came off the field. I felt there were 80,000 people out there rather than how many ever there were.” Bond also said that the crowd’s involvement whenever the game was “drifting away” gave everyone a lift.Vettori, however, was not entirely pleased with New Zealand’s performance over all five days, saying there was “some frustration” that they had managed to set a target of only 251 even after securing a 97-run lead in the first innings. “We want to control the game better than we did. We put ourselves in a difficult and precarious situation, but it’s always a fourth-innings wicket, and if you look at the history of the game, there’s not many teams that get 250 on the last day of a Test match.”

Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium – named after Libya’s leader Muammar Gaddafi in 1974 – celebrated 50 years as an international venue on Saturday. It hosted its first Test, between Pakistan and Australia, on this day in 1959, a game the visitors won by seven wickets.Despite the occasion for celebration, Lahore has had a disappointing year, for the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in March, which injured seven players and killed eight people, has put the Pakistan’s viability as international venue in doubt. Pakistan, which was one of the original co-hosts of the 2011 World Cup, lost their rights to stage the competition and their allotted matches were distributed among India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.Groudsman Haji Bashir, who joined the stadium staff as assistant groundsman in 1959 for the first Test at the venue, said the 50th anniversary was significant despite the loss of international cricket. “Celebrating 50 years of the Gaddafi Stadium is special for Pakistan cricket and for me,” Bashir was quoted as saying by . “The attacks were horrifying and deprived us of cricket but I am sure this historic ground and our beloved country will host international matches very soon.”Bashir did recall some memorable moments, foremost among them being the Test against India in 1978, where Pakistan sealed an eight-wicket win on an action-packed final day. It was their first win over India at home, after cricketing ties were restored between the countries following a 17-year gap.The Gaddafi Stadium has hosted 40 Tests. In 1978, it staged the first of its 58 ODIs, the most notable among them is the 1996 World Cup final between Sri Lanka and Australia. The venue, since 1959, has also been the headquarters of Pakistan cricket, housing the offices of the PCB. Wasim Bari, the PCB’s chief operating officer, said: “Gaddafi Stadium is truly the home of Pakistan cricket. It is one of the most beautiful grounds in Asia and we are trying our level best to bring international cricket back to our stadiums.”

'We definitely misread the pitch' – Masakadza

Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza has admitted he misjudged the conditions after his side were shot for 44 on electing to bat in the fourth ODI against Bangladesh in Chittagong

Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza has admitted he misjudged the conditions after his side were shot out for 44 on electing to bat in the fourth ODI against Bangladesh in Chittagong.”Definitely we misread the wicket,” he said after the thumping six-wicket defeat that handed Bangladesh the series 3-1. “It looked like a good batting track but it was too slow for a one-day wicket.”The poor total, he said, was a combination of bad batting and a tough track, where Bangladesh’s spinners found plenty of assistance. “Some guys gave their wickets away but, having said that, the wicket did play quite a big role,” he said. “The ball was holding up and there was too much spin on it. The wicket was definitely very bad but we also batted badly to complement that.”Zimbabwe have come into the series as underdogs but were in great form against Kenya last month and won the first one-dayer against Bangladesh as well. After that, though, they have been soundly beaten in three consecutive games. “Very disappointing and frustrating,” Masakdaza said about losing the series. “Having won the first game and having batted properly in the warm-ups in Kenya it is very disappointing to see the batting fall apart on this tour.”In contrast, the home side’s captain Shakib Al Hasan was delighted to have knocked over Zimbabwe for what was the lowest total against Bangladesh. “It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to bowl out a side for 44. It doesn’t happen everyday,” he said. “I also wanted a 10-wicket win which I think we haven’t had before. Disappointed that it didn’t happen. Maybe next time!”Bangladesh were also surprised by the amount of spin and bounce available on the surface. “There was sharp turn and the balls that went straight skidded,” he said. He also defended the preparation of tracks that play to the home team’s strength – the spinners (Bangladesh used six of them in the previous game, and only one quick bowler). “We know that it will not be that easy for our batsmen to adjust to seaming pitches and therefore wickets are prepared keeping in mind the strength of the home team,” he said. “”When we go to New Zealand we may have three or even four pacers in the playing eleven. It is totally dependent on the conditions. If there is a scope for taking home advantage who wouldn’t take it?”Nazmul Hossain, the lone fast bowler in the team, was Man of the Match for his early two-wicket burst. “Nazmul has bowled well for us in the last match also,” Shakib said. “I think he has been successful because of his control.”The final game of the series is at the same ground on Thursday.

LFC fans fume at Pearce transfer claim

A number of Liverpool supporters have reacted negatively to James Pearce’s claim that Nat Phillips could leave the Reds for £15million.

The 24-year-old became something of a cult hero for the Reds last season, performing admirably during an injury crisis that saw Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all out for long periods.

Phillips’ displays helped Liverpool clinch an unlikely third-place finish in the Premier League but he has struggled for minutes in 2021/22, as key men have returned to full fitness.

In fact, the centre-back has not played a single minute in the league this season, suggesting that a move away from Anfield could be on the cards.

According to The Athletic‘s Pearce on Twitter, there is ‘plenty of interest’ in Phillips and Liverpool want £15million for his services in the January transfer window.

Moshiri won’t sack Benitez at Everton

Lots of Everton fans have been left fuming over a revelation from Farhad Moshiri on Rafael Benitez.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Jim White, the Goodison Park club’s majority owner has now insisted that the Spaniard will not be sacked and claims that the 61-year-old needs more time.

This comes after the Toffees lost 4-1 at home to bitter rivals Liverpool, which now makes it eight matches in the Premier League without a win to their name.

Goodison Park is at real risk of becoming toxic if Everton lose at home to Arsenal in the Premier League on Monday night, and some Blues supporters have been left angry over Moshiri’s decision not to sack Benitez due to their poor form.

Others are annoyed that he did not give a statement to the fans first before going on talkSPORT, symbolising a lack of communication and understanding between each party.

Big win puts Papua New Guinea on top

A round-up of the fourth day of the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers in King City

Cricinfo staff05-Sep-2009

Afghanistan Under-19 beat Hong Kong Under-19 by six wickets•Eddie Norfolk

Papua New Guinea Under-19 maintained their 100% record in the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers with a 92-run win over Uganda Under-19 in King City. This win took them to the top of the table after previous table leaders Ireland lost to USA by 42 runs.Openers Heni Siaka and Lega Tau added 51 together after Uganda put PNG in to bat. Two more half-century stands between Vagi Oala (46) and Jason Kila (33) and John Reva (29*) and Steven Eno (43*) took PNG to 234 for 5.The possibility of a serious chase was ruled out when Uganda lost their first four wickets for 42. Emmanuel Nakaana top scored with 37 off 80 balls and was the seventh wicket to fall for 126 when he was bowled by legspinner Charles Amini. The last three wickets added 16 more as the match was wrapped up in the 44th over. Amini picked up 3 for 21 in 8.3 overs. An all-round display from Canada Under-19 gave them a comprehensive 77-run win over Netherlands Under-19 at Malton Cricket Club in Toronto on day four of the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers. The middle order boosted them to 220, with contributions from Nitish Kumar (40), Usman Limbada (26) and Asif Manjra (27) after opener Ruvindu Gunasekara had hit a run-a-ball 35.Ferdi Vink picked up three wickets in 4.3 overs but went for 28 runs as well. Netherlands began well, their openers reaching 48 in 12 overs before left-arm spinner Hiral Patel dismissed them in quick succession. Vinoo Tewarie and Tim Gruijters added another 43 but Tewarie’s wicket in the 27th over – bowled by offspinner Riayz Pathan – triggered a lower-order collapse. They lost their last seven wickets for 43 runs as Canada wrapped up the match in 45 overs. Despite the win, Canada remained at fourth place in the points table and Netherlands also stayed at sixth spot.Afghanistan Under-19 bounced back from their 72-run defeat to Ireland on Thursday to notch up an easy six-wicket win against Hong Kong Under-19 in King City.Izatullah Dawlatzai and Aimal Wafa shared seven wickets between them as Hong Kong were bowled out for 195. Dawlatzai, a medium-pace bowler, dismissed the openers in the first four overs with only eight on the scoreboard. However Nizakat Khan led Hong Kong’s recovery with a patient 59, adding half-century stands with James Atkinson and Ashish Gadhia. The two bowlers finally combined to remove Nizakat in the 30th over – when Wafa had Nizakat caught by Dawlatzai with Hong Kong at 128 for 4. Wafa then took two in two overs as Hong Kong slipped to 168 for 8 before Dawlatzai picked up the last two wickets.Afghanistan’s openers Ayoub Ahmadzai and Javed Ahmadi added 67 together to set up the chase. Though Afghanistan also lost four wickets for 128, around the same point in their innings that Hong Kong did, they did not collapse thereafter. Wafa (27*) and Noor-ul-Haq (44*) finished off the chase with more than seven overs to spare. Hong Kong have lost all three of their games so far.Saqib Saleem took 5 for 38 as USA Under-19 beat table-toppers Ireland by 42 runs in King City to go to second place in the points table.Ryan Corns’ 86 and Shiva Vashishat’s 43 took USA to 217 for 6 – 72 less than what Ireland had scored in their win over Afghanistan. Ireland’s chase began well with openers Andrew Balbirnie and Lee Nelson adding 62. Balbirnie was run out for 45 and No. 3 Paul Stirling was trapped leg before for 10 soon after. Nelson fell with the score on 93. Saleem took the next four wickets as Ireland slipped to 141 for 7. The last three wickets fell for 25 runs – Saleem got his fifth when he had No. 10 Edward Richardson caught for 14 – and USA won with 21 balls to spare.

Younis says he continues enjoying captaincy

Pakistan captain Younis Khanhas said he is enjoying leading the side despite the semi-final loss in the ICC Champions Trophy and insisted it had not affected his own performance on the field

Younis Khan: “All the boys are enjoying playing under my captaincy and that’s a good thing”•AFP

Pakistan captain Younis Khan has said he is enjoying leading the side despite the semi-final loss in the ICC Champions Trophy and insisted it had not affected his own performance on the field.”I’m enjoying cricket,” Younis said after reaching Karachi. “In fact all the boys are enjoying playing under my captaincy and that’s a good thing.”Younis was first made captain in 2005 in the absence of Inzamam-ul-Haq but announced his resignation for the 2006 Champions Trophy, only to reverse it the next day and lead Pakistan to a first-round exit in the tournament. He was favourite to take over the captaincy following Pakistan’s poor show in the 2007 World Cup but he turned it down, citing mental strain as the reason. However in January 2009, the board approached him again following a disastrous home series against Sri Lanka. This time Younis accepted and led Pakistan to a World Twenty20 title in England.Younis said the Champions Trophy exit was bitterly disappointing as he had wanted to gift his country the trophy that had been shifted from Pakistan to South Africa because of security concerns. He said there were many reasons for the team’s defeat to New Zealand, including his dropped catch, missed run-outs and poor umpiring but that finishing in the top four was a positive sign.”I will regret dropping it for the rest of my life,” Younis said. “Maybe the result could have been different had I not dropped that catch.”Allrounder Shahid Afridi felt luck had deserted Pakistan in the game against New Zealand but also said that they had made poor use of the Powerplays in the match. They scored only 35 in their batting Powerplay after taking it only in the 45th over and conceded 55 when New Zealand took theirs.
