Ryan Harris and Brent Arnel couldn’t have wished for better conditions to begin their Test careers than the green-top at the Basin Reserve

Ryan Harris and Brent Arnel couldn’t have wished for better conditions to begin their Test careers than the green-top at the Basin Reserve, where both men have a strong chance of making their debuts on Friday. Harris will become the 413th Australian Test cricketer, provided he has no problems recovering from a minor side injury, while the grassy surface has pushed Arnel in to strong contention to bump the spinner Jeetan Patel out of New Zealand’s line-up.Pace and bounce have been the features of warm-up sessions in Wellington and Ricky Ponting said facing up on the practice pitches was “like we were batting at the WACA”, compared to the slower one-day surfaces used recently. That will encourage Harris, whose excellent ODI form over the past two months – 28 wickets at 14.14 in 11 games – has pushed him ahead of Clint McKay in the Test reckoning.”He is a guy who can genuinely swing the ball at brisk pace,” Ponting said. “You are always looking for someone who can use the new ball really well. We unearthed a couple last year who could do that in Ben Hilfenhaus and Dougie Bollinger.”With Hilfenhaus not being here and Siddle not being here, someone who can use that new ball, I think Ryan fits all those things really well. In the one-day games, I think it was three or four games in a row back in Australia he got a wicket in the first over of the game swinging the new ball. So hopefully he can have the same sort of effect if he comes up for this Test match.”It is remarkable that Harris could be in line for a Test debut in a season when he has played only one Sheffield Shield match due to an injury at the start of the summer and his one-day commitments. But it now seems the only thing that can keep him out is the side problem that prompted Australia to fly the South Australian fast man Peter George in to join the squad as cover.Harris bowled in the indoor nets at Westpac Stadium on Wednesday while rain scuppered his chances of having a run outdoors. The Australians were being extra cautious by bringing in George, with the expectation that Harris would continue to recover well with a lengthy session at the Basin Reserve on match eve.”He bowled about five overs yesterday indoors which probably wasn’t ideal for us or for him,” Ponting said. “He’ll do a lot more bowling today for us to get a bit more of a feel on where he’s at. But everything he has done in the last couple of days with his bowling has been good. Things at the moment are pretty positive with him. Ryan will play if he gets through as well as we want him to today and we’ll wait and see how he wakes up in the morning.”New Zealand have seen plenty of Harris through the one-day series but Australia know little about Arnel, the Northern Districts bowler who is likely to play his first Test. Daniel Vettori would not commit to Arnel over Patel with a day’s preparation remaining, but he said the conditions made it more likely than not that Arnel would have the edge.At 31, he has enjoyed the first-class scene after being a late starter, not making his first appearance until 27. This summer Arnel has taken 29 Plunket Shield wickets at 19.58 and Vettori said he was confident that Arnel could make the step up to Test level.”He’s been waiting in the wings a little while and has been involved in a few squads,” Vettori said. “Hopefully if he does get the nod then he is ready. He’s been bowling really well and that’s the main thing. He’s pretty consistent, he puts it in the right areas the majority of the time and on a wicket that’s got a little bit of something in it, that’s pretty crucial.”

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher tore into Crystal Palace defender Joel Ward following a ‘huge mistake’ in the first half of their Premier League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday night.
The lowdown
Palace played out a 1-1 draw with their rivals at the Amex Stadium as a late Joachim Andersen own goal cancelled out Conor Gallagher’s opener.
Patrick Vieira gave right-back Ward his sixth start in succession and his 19th of the season on the south coast.
But the Englishman was guilty of an error just 11 minutes into the game, heading the ball straight to Marc Cucurella after a long ball forward from Brighton. Cucurella then set Leandro Trossard through on goal, only for Palace ‘keeper Jack Butland to deny him.
The latest
Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, Carragher said Butland had bailed Ward out.
“Huge sigh of relief from Joel Ward, [who] made an absolute mess of it,” Carragher said.
“[He] has his goalkeeper to thank. It’s a huge mistake. You’re just praying that your goalkeeper can help you.”
The verdict
The error rather set the tone for Ward, who had a difficult night against The Seagulls.
In the Crystal Palace starting XI, only Will Hughes (6.1), who gave away a penalty and picked up a yellow card, recorded a lower SofaScore rating than Ward’s 6.2.
He was dribbled past twice, winning only one of his three ground duels.
The 32-year-old also finished the game with a passing accuracy of just 59%, having failed to find a team-mate with any of his six long balls. He lost possession 19 times overall.

Hampshire have completed the signing of Kabir Ali, following Worcestershire’s decision to release him from the final season of his contract after a long-standing dispute.”Hampshire is a fantastic club with great ambition on and off the field and I am really excited about joining them,” said Kabir. “I have been working very hard on my fitness this winter and feel confident that I can play a major role for the Team this summer.’The decision brings to an end an acrimonious stand-off between Kabir and Worcestershire, whom he had asked for permission to move to Hampshire on a three-year deal following the club’s relegation from the first division of the County Championship. But, with his contract at New Road not yet fulfilled, Worcestershire asked for a £60,000 compensation to be paid by the club that signed him.As no county was prepared to do so, Kabir was due to remain at Worcestershire for the 2010 season, despite the departures of other big names such as Stephen Moore, Gareth Batty and Steven Davies. In October Mark Newton, Worcestershire’s chief executive, said “Kabir has already told us that if he remained with the club he would give 100% next season and we know that he will.”Yet as the season drew closer, the dispute had clearly not been resolved as Kabir failed to turn up to the pre-season training. Kabir defended his actions saying: “I was entitled to have 12 days annual leave and I took them. I never refused to train.” Yet, with no sign of resolution, Worcestershire decided to release him. “Kabir has been with the club for 10 years and we are very sorry to see him go,” said the club’s chief executive, Mark Newton.Hampshire, however, are delighted to have landed a bowler who has captured 429 first-class wickets at an impressive strike-rate of 44.8. ‘I am thrilled that Kabir has confirmed that he will be joining Hampshire,” said the first-team coach, Giles White. “His domestic record is superb and he will be a huge asset to the side. We hope that he will bring further success to the Club and in doing so reignite his international career.’Hampshire’s chairman, Rod Bransgrove, said: “Kabir is a dangerous and exciting cricketer and I am delighted that he has chosen to re-ignite his career here at Hampshire. Our squad is coming together nicely with a great blend of youth and experience and, with the new developments at The Rose Bowl well under way, this is a fantastic time to be a supporter of Hampshire Cricket.’The man himself tried to draw a line under the acrimonious end to his time at New Road saying: “I enjoyed my time at Worcestershire immensely and have made a lot of good friends. But the club were going through a difficult time with players leaving and I needed a fresh challenge.”
Paul Harris tried to stem the run flow by adopting a leg-stump line. It didn’t work and he was often called wide by umpire Ian Gould

Paul Harris was a completely different bowler today. In Nagpur his sole aim, especially in the second innings, was to clamp down on India’s batsmen. He went about doing so by pitching consistently on leg stump or outside and turning the ball into the right-handers from the rough. The Indian batsmen played him conservatively from the crease. They played into Harris’s hands and he succeeded in stemming the run flow. His attempt today had drastically different results. On a harder pitch, which didn’t take much turn from the rough, Harris tried to apply the same leg-side suffocation but was punished by Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, as well as umpire Ian Gould.Umpires have taken flak for not taking a firmer stand on the indiscretions of the players but Gould exercised his power and penalised Harris each time he bowled a straighter delivery behind the batsman’s legs. Harris, however, refused to change his line and forced Gould into calling the ball wide on 12 occasions.Corrie van Zyl, the South African coach, accepted Gould’s decision but said his spinner suffered only because the ball was not turning. “You can see it as a negative line and the umpire did think so, too, and obviously those were called wides,” he said.About five years ago, the standard playing regulations for Test matches were amended in an effort to prevent negative leg-side bowling. Law 25.1 – Judging a Wide – states: “For bowlers whom umpires consider to be bowling down the leg side as a negative tactic, the strict limited-over wide interpretation shall be applied.”An ICC spokesperson admitted that in order to prevent bowlers from easily adopting leg-theory to stem the run-flow, the law needed to be updated. “Some bowlers like Shane Warne used leg-side bowling as an attacking option, while some have used it negatively to frustrate batsmen and stem scoring-rates. It’s usually pretty obvious when it is attacking because there is a short-leg in place and the ball is turning, so it becomes difficult for batsmen to survive, let alone score runs.”Another factor that thwarted Harris’ plan was the way Sehwag and Tendulkar dealt with him. They were happy to deflect him to the on side whenever there was no fielder at short leg. Otherwise they let the straighter ones go, confident the ball would not turn. Sehwag even slog-swept for a six over deep midwicket and then reverse swept when Harris tried to cram him.van Zyl said Harris could have been more diligent in his approach. “Some of them did turn out of the rough and some of them didn’t. But Harry [Harris] did a good job for the team, but it was a lot tougher than it was in Nagpur, where there was some assistance.”
Paul Collingwood talks about his tenth Test hundred

Paul Collingwood has seen too much in his long international career, and sailed too close and too often to the margins of selection, to let anything distract from his rare moments in the limelight. And so when, after a year of the hardest but most rewarding cricket of his career, he was presented the opportunity to secure his tenth Test hundred against a toiling and demoralised Bangladeshi attack, he didn’t think twice about the opportunity, nor seek to denigrate it afterwards.”This is a special century for me,” said Collingwood. “It is Test cricket and to get ten centuries, it is something I thought I’d never achieve when I first started the game. I’ve not had a hundred for a little while, so I wanted to make sure I got there and it was a special one for me. But I’m not going to rank it as the best or the worst or even the easiest, because I think that is a little bit unfair.”Being unfair was pretty much the order of the day, however, as Collingwood brutalised a drained attack – first in partnership with Alastair Cook, and then with Ian Bell alongside him – as he galloped down the wicket to spin and pace alike, clunking his bottom-handed drives and pulls to the tune of 10 fours and four sixes. As the declaration approached it was a help-yourself scenario, until on 145, Tamim Iqbal circled beneath one lofted drive too many.Nevertheless, only 25 England batsmen have previously reached ten Test centuries, and notable names who fell short include Robin Smith, Derek Randall, Ted Dexter and Tony Greig. If nothing else, the achievement confirms – in Collingwood’s own eternally modest mind – the impression that he has been giving to the rest of the cricket world over the past 12 months: that he has moved far beyond the mediocrity that can at times afflict English batsmen, and cemented himself for posterity as a player who was greater than the sum of his parts.”I think that is why it has been a special moment today,” he said. “If you get to ten Test centuries then you’re, not a great, but it is an achievement. I’m 33 years old, and I think I’m developing all the time as a player and I’m getting more confident. I’ve had a great 12 months and I want to continue with that.”It is a proud moment and I’m happy with that,” he said. “I’m probably not the best-looking batsman in the middle, and that has gone against me in the past, but my job is a run-getter not a batsman. Sometimes people forget that it is the scoring the runs that is the most important thing, and not how you get them. That is how I’ve always approached it.”If people have forgotten it in the past, then they’ve had ample reminders in England’s most recent encounters. “Brigadier Block” was the monicker conferred upon Collingwood after a string of heroics against Australia at Cardiff, and South Africa at Centurion and Cape Town – three matches that came down to the very last deliveries of the game, but not before he had grafted a total of 140 runs from 532 balls, in a minute short of 13 hours, to set up those chances for salvation.”There have been innings along the way that in my own mind have been centuries in the past year but statistically they haven’t been put down, so today it was important that I got over the three figures,” he said. “I don’t want anything to be taken away from our performance and the way we’ve approached the game. I think we’ve done some good things in the game and I think Bangladesh are improving all the time.”Despite a defiant 81 not out from Tamim, Bangladesh’s 56th defeat in 65 Tests looms large, and depending on how long their first innings extends on Sunday morning, they could yet be subjected to their 34th by an innings. Nevertheless, for Collingwood – who began the tour by joking about the quality of the country’s golf courses – there’s still the prospect of this good walk being spoiled, and he was determined not to release the pressure until the job is done and dusted.”We haven’t played a lot against Bangladesh in the last couple of years but they are improving and they can be an awkward team to come up against,” he said. “What we’ve seen in the last two days is a very, very flat wicket, so it is easy to say they are not as good as other Test playing nations, but they are getting better and better.”We’ll not be getting complacent because it can be tough over here and we don’t want them to get a sniff. They’ve upset a few sides along the way so we need to make sure that we don’t let them upset us. It is an important series for us because we’ve got some real important cricket coming up at the back end of the year and we want to give ourselves the best chance possible, which means winning as much as possible.”
