Karl Brown scored a maiden first-class century to help put Lancashire in charge of their County Championship match against Sussex after two days at Liverpool. The 22-year-old right-hander has been on the county’s professional staff since 2006 but is making only his seventh four-day appearance. He shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 180 inside 62 overs with Mark Chilton, whose 87 frustrated Murray Goodwin’s side as they looked to defend their first-innings total of 243 all out. Lancashire closed the day on 319 for 5 after 111 overs, a lead of 76.Brown was dropped on 82 at square-leg by Naved Arif off the bowling of Jimmy Anyon three overs before bringing up three figures off 177 balls. He hit a couple of boundaries in the same over to rub salt into the wound. His 114 off 236 balls, including 18 boundaries, was also the highest score by a Lancashire player in Championship cricket on this ground since Graeme Fowler scored 169 against Kent in 1987.Sussex had started the day brightly with the wickets of night-watchman Gary Keedy and Stephen Moore to reduce the home side to 64 for 3 in the 30th over. Keedy was caught at silly mid-off by Joe Gatting off the bowling of left-arm spinner Monty Panesar – later warned for running on the pitch – and Moore chopped on an attempted pull off the bowling of Amjad Khan. But they had to wait until midway through the evening session for their next success – that of Chilton, bowled by Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, ending his 184-ball stay at the crease. By that time, however, Lancashire had moved one run past Sussex’s total. Brown fell in identical fashion to Chilton five overs later, this time Anyon getting in on the act.Brown has been given the opportunity to start the season for the first time in his career due to his county’s failure to sign an experienced batsman during the winter months. In effect, he is the direct replacement in the batting order for last season’s overseas duo Ashwell Prince and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. His previous first-class best was a 72 against Oxford MCCU at the Parks last weekend, where Chilton also scored a century and a fifty. Lancashire beneficiary Chilton mixed defence with fluent strokeplay throughout his innings but the double strike at least provided Sussex with some joy in the final session.Anyon bowled an eight-over spell after tea, costing only 17 runs, to slow things down somewhat though Steven Croft (37 not out) and Tom Smith saw their side through to close with an unbroken partnership of 53.

O'Brien blazes Ireland to glory

Kevin O’Brien stunned England with the fastest hundred in World Cup history as Ireland secured their greatest victory with a monumental three-wicket triumph in Bangalore

Kevin O’Brien stunned England with the fastest hundred in World Cup history as Ireland secured their greatest victory with a monumental three-wicket triumph in Bangalore. O’Brien clubbed a magnificent 113 off 63 deliveries as Ireland earned the highest World Cup run-chase with four balls to spare. After he’d added a match-changing 162 with Alex Cusack, John Mooney joined him to play the innings of his life and help write another famous chapter in Irish sport. When the partnership was broken with 55 still needed Ireland could have lost their way, especially when O’Brien couldn’t get the strike back. However, after struggling to get the ball away Mooney suddenly started locating the boundary, firstly off the outside edge but then with two nerveless drives through the covers, each coming after England had strung together a few dot balls to build pressure. He was the dominant partner in the seven-wicket stand.Still, though, there was a final twist when O’Brien was run out in the penultimate over. Trent Johnston, however, drove his first ball, a full toss from Stuart Broad, for four as the equation came down to below a run-a-ball for the first time in the entire chase. The final over started with just three needed and off the second ball Mooney clipped Anderson through midwicket to set off epic celebrations that will take over any available Bangalore bar tonight.O’Brien’s innings was breathtaking. He entered when Ed Joyce, seemingly Ireland’s last chance of making the chase a contest, was stumped off Graeme Swann to leave their run-chase floundering at 106 for 4, which soon became 111 for 5 when Gary Wilson fell lbw. But O’Brien proceeded to tear the England attack apart. He showed power reminiscent of Kieron Pollard but with a calmer head and better technique, bringing up his hundred off 50 balls with a tuck for two into the leg side to beat Matthew Hayden’s World Cup record of 66 deliveries. It led to a reveal of his the purple head-do as part of Ireland’s charity fundraising campaign. He showed his intent early when he thumped Swann through the covers second-ball and the tucked into the offspinner’s ninth over with two sixes over midwicket which injected life into Ireland’s innings. O’Brien was on 35 off 22 balls when Ireland took the batting Powerplay and it was during those five overs that the chance of the impossible became possible as 62 runs surged onto the total. As happened against Ryan ten Doeschate’s onslaught in their opening match against the Netherlands, England’s bowlers started to lose the plot during another wayward, undisciplined display. Michael Yardy went for 16 as did James Anderson whom O’Brien pulled for a huge six to take him to a 30-ball fifty. Anderson’s next over went for 17 including another leg-side pull and in between whiles, even the normally reliable Tim Bresnan was dispatched, including the finest shot of O’Brien’s innings when he drove a six clean over cover.Really, though, fielding restrictions meant nothing to O’Brien and he continued on his merry way with another huge blow over midwicket to take him into the 90s. Then the whole of Ireland held their breath as O’Brien’s next attempt to clear the rope sent the ball high into the night sky where Andrew Strauss made a lot of ground but then couldn’t hold on.O’Brien needed support to play his incredible innings and Cusack’s role can’t be understated in the amazing scenes which unfolded. He was almost lost in O’Brien’s slipstream but sensibly rotated the strike until, off his 49th ball, he joined the boundary hitting by launching Collingwood over midwicket then thumped Yardy straight down the ground. Even his dismissal, run-out from backward point, was for the team cause as he ensured O’Brien stayed at the crease. Although he wasn’t quite there at the end he had written himself a permanent place in Irish folklore.Even more incredibly this wasn’t a run chase built on solid foundations. William Porterfield dragged the first ball of the innings into his stumps and although Paul Stirling, Ed Joyce and Niall O’Brien all played neatly their contributions were seemingly too insignificant in such a huge pursuit. In the final outcome, however, the intent shown by Stirling, in particular, showed Ireland wouldn’t take a backward step.Tellingly, too, Stirling was given a life when Matt Prior shelled a simple chance which set the tone for another shoddy fielding display. However, it looked like England would comfortably emerge unscathed when Swann removed three middle-order scalps with a teasing spell of drift, flight and turn to leave Ireland 111 for 5. Already, though, O’Brien was at the non-striker’s end and about embark on one of the great match-winning displays. There are so many areas England will rue, chiefly another below-par display in the field but they will also look back on the closing stages of their seemingly impressive 327. The final five overs only brought 33 runs as Mooney preceded his crucial batting effort with some smart death bowling and a career-best 4 for 63. It meant, like for India three days ago, the 350-plus that was on the cards when Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell were adding 167 for the third wicket didn’t materialise. This tournament is proving that big first-innings scores are no certainty of victory. It will be largely forgotten because of what followed, but Trott wrote his own place in the record books when he reached 1000 runs in his 21st innings to equal the mark set by Viv Richards and Kevin Pietersen. The latter had set up the innings with a sparkling 59 before throwing away his chance of a hundred with a top-edged reverse sweep. It wasn’t England’s only piece of lazy cricket. Bell’s was a lovely, easy, innings as he moved along with smart placement and deft touches to tick off his fifty from 61 balls. After their problems against India, England actually used the batting Powerplay reasonably well to collect 45 runs and even though the middle order failed to fire once again it appeared fairly insignificant when Ireland’s top order was whittled away. One man, though, stood in their way and the rest, as they say, is history.Match Timeline

Papua New Guinea win again, Denmark stun USA

A round-up of the second day of action from the World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Hong Kong

Denmark’s 30-run win over United States of America at the Mission Road ground in Mong Kok was the story of the second day of the World Cricket League Division Three tournament. Michael Pedersen played a true captain’s knock for his team, holding the innings together with an unbeaten 78, and followed that up with four wickets as USA were bowled out for 163 in pursuit of Denmark’s 193 for 6.In the lowest scoring fixture of the day, Denmark were put in to bat on a fine and sunny day and the top order put 50 runs on the board before opener Freddie Klokker had his stumps rearranged by medium-pacer Orlando Baker. After Yasir Iqbal departed for 31 it was left to Pedersen to guide his side to a respectable total, with no other batsman scoring more than 13. He eased past fifty and maintained his composure as wickets fell at the other end, facing 123 balls and hitting nine fours.USA weren’t particularly impressive in the field, missing key opportunities that allowed Denmark to score more runs than they otherwise would have. Their bowling attack – Muhammad Ghous apart – was at least economical, with left-arm spinner Asif Khan picking up 2 for 31.Carl Wright launched USA’s chase with an aggressive 43 and it appeared the team’s tactic would be to waste no time in getting past the low total. Denmark’s opening bowlers bore the brunt of their attack, but USA paid the price for their approach as wickets fell at regular intervals and it was spin that proved their undoing. Pedersen provided crucial breakthroughs with the wickets of Wright, Lennox Cush for a 14-ball 16 and Rashard Marshall for 31. Legspinner Bobby Chawla then ran through the lower order, picking up 4 for 32 and removing Kevin Darlington lbw to seal the result.”I think in the first hour or so we played well making 40-odd runs and I was pleased with how Freddie Klokker and Yasir Iqbal performed,” said Pedersen, who was named Man of the Match. “But once the newness of the ball had worn off and it began to lose some of its pace I think our batsmen found it harder to score runs, especially with the USA bowling so straight and not leaving much room for manoeuvre. I felt I had to really sit in and grind out my innings giving the others the opportunities so that we could make a decent total. I think we were also aided in making our total by some poor fielding by the USA who missed at least one sitter of a catch.”Pedersen added his side’s game-plan, when it came to the bowling, was what really paid off for the team today. “The team had a game plan when we took to the field and once we’d taken the pace off the ball after the first 12 overs the USA started to come at the ball.”Bobby’s bowling was brilliant today and as for myself, I think I was pretty lucky with some of my wickets with some good catches being taken by my fielders. This tournament is wide open now which I think is great. We weren’t the favourites in today’s game and today’s results show no team is unbeatable. I feel we’ve got ourselves accustomed to the conditions and are now playing the way we should be at this event.”Papua New Guinea completed their second win in two days, beating Italy by 32 runs at Hong Kong Cricket Club. In another low-scoring game Jason Kila’s innings of 46 proved vital to PNG’s total of 209, while they were also helped by some sloppy bowling from the Italians as 24 wides were conceded. Peter Petricola was once again the pick of Italy’s attack, taking 4 for 38, but he could do nothing to counter a committed team performance from PNG’s bowlers as Italy were bowled out for 172 in the 44th over.Despite their inaccuracy, Italy’s bowlers had reduced PNG to 105 for 6 before they encountered some gritty lower-order resistance. Wicketkeeper Jack Vare made a patient 28 in helping to add 61 for the seventh wicket – the highest partnership in either innings – while Kila struck four fours and a six before he was caught behind to prompt a capitulation from the tail.PNG captain Rarua Dikana shone with the ball, claiming 3 for 24 with his medium pacers and taking the all-important wickets of opener Andy Northcote and the dangerous Petricola. While most of Italy’s batsmen made starts, none were able to push on and play a decisive innings and the wickets were shared around before No. 11 Alauddin was run out to end the innings.”Our batsmen are confident and did a good job spreading the load to make the total but perhaps didn’t perform as strongly as we know they can, but with a strong bowling unit we didn’t feel panicked about taking on Italy’s batting line up and we scored our second victory,” said Dikana. “The pitch was pretty bouncy this morning but it flattened out as when we bowled on it which saw the ball keep low which helped me in claiming at least two of my wickets which were leg before. Tomorrow’s a rest day which means we can relax as a side and prepare for Tuesday and hopefully make it three out of three.”In the tightest match of the day hosts Hong Kong lost out for the second time in a row, this time to a rejuvenated Oman side. In the bright sunshine of Kowloon Cricket Club, Najeeb Amar’s side put on a respectable total of 266 after some strong batting from Hussain Butt who struck 81 of the side’s runs. The stand-out bowler for the Omanis was veteran spinner Khalid Rasheed who managed to claim the scalps of Courtney Kruger and Butt on his way to 3 for 37.Oman’s batsmen didn’t waste any time when it came to scoring runs after lunch with opener Hemin Desai smashing his way to 62 in just 30 balls. The 33-year-old right-handed batsman smashed nine boundaries and three sixes before he was bowled by Nadeem Ahmed. Vaibhav Wategaonkar added an important 68 but the star of the Oman innings was easily the side’s wicketkeeper-batsman Sultan Ahmed, whose unbeaten 70 guided the team to victory with one over to spare.”It’s obviously disappointing not to win for a second time but the side hasn’t lost its confidence. We know we’ve got the ability and today’s game, like yesterday’s, came down to the last over,” said Hong Kong coach Charlie Burke. “Our biggest problem is we’ve not had a big enough batting partnership in our innings and then we’ve gone on to bowl five or six poor overs which has allowed the opposition to get on top of us. We won’t let today’s result hold us back and along with the other results from today’s games the tournament is still wide open.””We have a great depth in our middle-order and today it paid off with everyone contributing throughout the 50 overs to get us over the line,” said Ahmed, who was named Man of the Match. “We knew today’s match was important for both ourselves and Hong Kong and we wanted to give it our all, we made sure we were motivated for today’s match and it really paid off. We always focus on the coming match and not the next four matches and I think that has helped our focus today and hopefully it will help us after the rest day when we face Italy on Tuesday.”
