Contudo, a nova cúpula adota cautela.

Taylor, Williamson put New Zealand in control

Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor showed refreshing patience and application to wear down the Sri Lanka bowlers for the better part of three sessions to set a solid platform for a big score

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran25-Nov-2012

In an otherwise one-sided tour, New Zealand finally took ownership of an entire day. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor showed refreshing patience and application to wear down the Sri Lanka bowlers for the better part of three sessions to set a solid platform for a big score. All talk of a bouncy pitch and seaming conditions were put to rest as the bowlers struggled to create chances, with both batsmen adding an unbeaten 209.One of the main reasons for New Zealand’s slump in Test form was the inability of their batsmen to occupy the crease and build partnerships. New Zealand have only five century stands this year, the highest being 124 between Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum against Zimbabwe in Napier, until Taylor and Williamson overtook it, against a far superior bowling attack in foreign conditions.Taylor, himself struggling for consistency, had spoken about taking an aggressive approach to help his side compete better. However, unlike his blistering century in the Bangalore Test, Taylor was more watchful and with Williamson focused on wearing down the bowlers. New Zealand were more watchful from the second session, offered no chances and that was largely because their defence was more watertight. Both progressed at similar pace, and while Taylor brought up his eighth Test century, Williamson was five short of his third century before rain forced an early finish. The pair came together at 14 for 2 and it was an opportunity for New Zealand to put to practice all talk of showing better application with the bat. Taylor survived a few nervy moments, edging a drive wide of the slips on 14 and getting a thick inside edge off a square drive that went for four. A controlled upper cut over the slips got him going and it helped that Williamson got a measure of the conditions early and looked to be positive. While Taylor looked edgy at the start, Williamson didn’t. He began with a neat punch off Nuwan Kulasekara past the covers and once spin was introduced in the 15th over, he used his feet well. Rangana Herath posed questions straightaway when he got one to turn and grip from middle stump and nearly shave the off stump, one that had Williamson foxed. There weren’t too many such unplayable deliveries as the day wore on. Williamson didn’t let that trouble him as he charged Herath and lofted over mid-on and followed it up with a neat extra-cover drive.Taylor reached his fifty in the first over after lunch with a glance to fine leg off Shaminda Eranga and Williamson approached his milestone with two boundaries off the same bowler. Sri Lanka bowled 14 consecutive overs of spin, with no success. Suraj Randiv operated with a slip and a backward short leg and managed turn and bounce but the batsmen managed to smother the turn. He even bowled to a 6-3 on-side field from round the wicket, with a deep backward square leg for the sweep but the batsmen didn’t oblige. At one point, Herath had a short extra cover and a silly mid-off, but none of those field sets induced false strokes.Only five boundaries were scored in the second session, as the pair focused on rotating the strike, with the field getting more defensive. Kulasekara, who was brought back into the attack after a long spell of spin, couldn’t get the old ball to swing. An edged boundary to third man took Taylor into the 90s, but he wasn’t in any hurry to reach his century, ensuring New Zealand went to tea unbeaten.Taylor reached his century with a clip to deep square leg off Eranga and carried on with some pleasing drives off the fast bowlers. There was reverse swing after tea, but the batsmen negated it well. Williamson, who showed a lot of patience against the spinners, punched Herath against the turn to find the boundary that took him to the 90s.The only time Sri Lanka tasted success was in the first half an hour. Guptill, already struggling for runs, managed a thick outside edge to Angelo Mathews at slip to give the hosts a breakthrough in the first over.McCullum went forward to defend close to the pads but unfortunately, the umpire failed to spot a thick inside edge and sent him on his way. A peeved McCullum didn’t hold back his glare at the umpire as he walked off at 14 for 2 in the fourth over. From then on, it was all New Zealand.

Hants prosper in home conditions

Aided by excellent slip catching, Hampshire kept their promotion hopes alive by bowling Essex out cheaply on a helpful surface on day one at West End

Ivo Tennant at West End04-Sep-2012

In the 1970s and 1980s, Ron Allsopp, the skilled head groundsman atTrent Bridge, would leave a thick coating of grass on the pitches hecut, specifically for Richard Hadlee and Clive Rice to exploit. This worked to good effect, not least through continuallywinning the toss. That same good fortune is being enjoyed now by JimmyAdams and Hampshire’s seamers, who, with considerable assistance fromtheir slip fielders, dismissed Essex for 180.This is not to say that the pitches cut by Nigel Gray here areanything like as difficult to bat on as was the case by the Trent inthe past. The bounce is even and there is good carry. Yet it is fair to saythat run-making was rather more straightforward when the one dayinternational was staged here a week ago than it was now. Every Essexbatsman fell through a catch in the slips or behind the wicket, withthe exception of one tail-ender who was bowled. There was considerablemovement.Gray is no less skilled than Alsopp and his pitches play better thelonger the match continues. The drawback in all this is not so muchthat the side winning the toss is more likely to win the match, butthat there is little scope for spin. Danny Briggs, unavailable becausehe is with England’s one-day party, would probably not have been picked, anyway. That has been the situation for most of the season.Essex, facing an attack in which David Griffiths was preferred toKabir Ali and Chris Wood, were five wickets down by lunch. The slipcatching was extremely sharp. As Neil McKenzie has returned to SouthAfrica, no longer required now that Michael Carberry is fit, Adamshimself has gone to first slip. He accounted for Tom Westley and Ryanten Doeschate; Liam Dawson is perhaps the best second slip in thecountry, and James Vince is pretty competent alongside him. They alsotook two catches each. Add Sean Ervine in the gully and this is a finecordon. Some of the shot selection was unnecessary. Rather like late cuttingbefore May is out, cover driving before lunch made for extravagance.Jaik Mickleburgh and Owais Shah both were out in that way, to DavidBalcombe, who finished with four wickets, and James Tomlinsonrespectively. Adam Wheater was neatly held by Michael Bates behind thewicket.Mark Pettini was the sole batsman to flourish, reaching 58 with eightfours before he, too, fell to a slip catch. Tom Craddock played on toErvine after lunch and Maurice Chambers soon edged to Bates. ForGriffiths, playing his first Championship match since May, there werethree wickets. The question now was whether Hampshire, who have to winthis match to have a chance of promotion, could bat any better againsta similarly pace-dominated attack. To a fair extent they did. Adams swung at a short ball from Chambersand sent up a catch to square leg, but Carberry, so powerful in hishitting in the CB40 semi-final at Hove last weekend, made 42 witheight fours and Bilal Shafayat, who is far from in form, looked justabout in touch towards the end of the day.

É Série A!

O Fortaleza é o primeiro time garantido na Série A do futebol brasileiro.

Test lightweights scrap for rare success

The preview of the first Test between West Indies and New Zealand in Antigua

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran24-Jul-2012Match factsJuly 25-29
Start time 1000 (1400 GMT)After dominating the domestic scene in New Zealand in recent years, Neil Wagner is set to turn out at the highest level•Getty Images

Big PictureMidway through the limited-overs leg of the tour, you felt sorry for New Zealand as, bereft of several seniors, they slid from defeat to defeat. Their stand-in captain Kane Williamson, all of 21 years old and looking even younger, earnestly defended his inexperienced team after Chris Gayle effortlessly dished out half-century after half-century.Two senior batsmen, Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum, were available in the final two ODIs, and New Zealand will be further boosted by the arrival of two old hands, their man-for-all occasions Daniel Vettori and their pace spearhead Chris Martin. Their presence lifts a bowling line-up that looked pretty fragile during large parts of the one-day series, as does the inclusion of Neil Wagner, a man in whom New Zealand fans have placed an almost inordinate amount of faith.New Zealand pulled off one of their greatest Test victories last year against Australia, and competed against South Africa in a home defeat. It’s been more than a decade since they won a Test series away from home (excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe), and while they enter these contests as underdogs, it still presents them with their best opportunity for an overseas victory. For that they need to find answers to the same players who gave them plenty of headaches in the limited-overs matches: Gayle and Sunil Narine. Gayle returns for his first Test in more than 19 months, and West Indies will hope that solves their top-order troubles; in recent series, West Indies have typically been three for almost nothing, leaving the middle-order facing a salvage job. Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been their rescuer-in-chief for years now, and his presence solidifies a batting line-up that was explosive but inconsistent in the one-dayers.The focus will also be on Narine, who continued to be a match-winner in limited-overs matches, but is yet to show whether he can be similarly effective in the five-day game. His Test debut in England was a disaster, but on more familiar surfaces and in more comfortable temperatures, Narine should prove more dangerous. If he clicks, West Indies’ chances of only their second series win in more than nine years (excluding Zimbabwe and Bangladesh) will be considerably bright.Form guide (Completed games, most recent first)
West Indies DLLLD
New Zealand DLDWWWatch out for…Neil Wagner, the South Africa-born left-arm seamer, has dominated the domestic scene in New Zealand in recent years. The days remaining till he qualified to represent New Zealand were eagerly counted down, and he was picked as soon as he was available. He impressed in the practice match, and with fast bowlers Trent Boult and Mark Gillespie injured, he is expected to make his Test debut.Kemar Roach was on-song against Australia in the home series earlier this year, and troubled England’s batsmen as well before pulling out of the tour with an ankle injury. The warm-up game against the New Zealanders was his first match since then, and he showed he was ready to go with a four-wicket burst in the first innings. With his raw pace, Roach provides West Indies with a genuinely threatening spearhead.Pitch and conditionsThere were runs available in the warm-up match on the same ground if batsmen had the required patience, but there should be plenty of opportunity for the bowlers on this surface. Chris Martin, the New Zealand fast bowler, said: “The warm-up game showed us that if we’re in the right areas for long enough the up-and-down nature of the pitch is probably going to get us results.”Team newsGayle’s return and the form of Marlon Samuels, who scored plenty of runs in the recent England Tests, means the batting burden on Chanderpaul is reduced. One of the harder decisions West Indies will have to take is who between Ravi Rampaul and Tino Best to pick.West Indies: (probable) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Adrian Barath, 3 Kieran Powell, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Marlon Samuels, 6 Narsingh Deonarine, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul/Tino Best, 11 Kemar RoachWith Trent Boult injured, Wagner is expected to start, possibly the only change from the XI that lined up for the final Test against South Africa.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Daniel Flynn, 3 Brendon McCullum, 4 Ross Taylor (capt), 5 Kane Williamson, 6 Dean Brownlie, 7 Daniel Vettori, 8 Kruger van Wyk (wk), 9 Doug Bracewell, 10 Neil Wagner, 11 Chris MartinStats and triviaNew Zealand last lost a Test against West Indies in Barbados in 1996. Since then, they have won five and drawn five.Chris Gayle is just 63 runs away from surpassing Gordon Greenidge as the highest run-getter for West Indies against New Zealand. Gayle has scored 820 runs in seven Tests at 74.54.Quotes”A warm-up game is a warm-up game. We got what we wanted out of it. We were lucky to come away with the draw but most of the batsmen had a decent bat out there and the bowlers got a good trundle for one innings.”

Carberry ton powers Hampshire to victory

A Michael Carberry hundred and a fluent half-century from Jimmy Adams led Hampshire to a comfortable nine-wicket win against Somerset

27-May-2012
ScorecardA Michael Carberry hundred and a fluent half-century from Jimmy Adams led Hampshire to a comfortable nine-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 win over Somerset in front of a 4,000 Taunton crowd. The two openers set their side on course to easily chase down a target of 213 with a stand of 103 in 14 overs before Adams fell for 56. Carberry went on to score an unbeaten 103 off 83 balls, with a six and 14 fours, as the visitors skated to victory with more than 11 overs to spare.Somerset had posted 212 for 9 after losing the toss, Nick Compton (81) and Jos Buttler (71) sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 121 and Dimitri Mascarenhas taking 2 for 17, bowling his eight overs straight through with the new ball.It never looked likely to be enough on a good batting pitch and Hampshire confidently made it three wins from as many Group B games with a convincing all-round performance.Mascarenhas had Somerset under pressure from the start, bowling with superb control from the River End and uprooting the off stump with similar deliveries to remove Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego. When James Hildreth was caught at slip skying a top-edged pull off Chris Wood, the home side were 25 for 3 in the eighth over.Compton and Buttler were forced to show caution as they set about rebuilding the innings. But Buttler still produced some stunning boundaries all around the wicket to reach his half-century off 59 balls. He averaged 137 in the competition last season and was looking set for another century when run out by Liam Dawson’s direct hit at the bowler’s end having called for a quick single to mid-off.Compton was unable to break loose and hit only six fours in his 106-ball innings, but it was still a valuable knock as apart from him and Buttler, only Craig Overton (20) managed double figures in the face of some sharp Hampshire fielding.Somerset’s score looked 30 below par and they needed to take their catches to defend it. Instead the first chance went begging as Carberry, on 1, was spilled by Compton diving to his left at point off Trego. It proved an expensive miss as Carberry and Adams started scoring as they liked. Adams hit two towering sixes off Peter Trego, managing to hit his own car with one of them.He was first to fifty off 42 balls before lofting a catch to mid-on off Craig Overton. Carberry reached his half-century off 40 deliveries, with seven fours, and the result was never in doubt. Just to make sure, James Vince cracked an effortless 44 not out after Adams’ dismissal and Carberry won the game with the straight six that took him to his century.
