Three teams queue up for semi spot

ESPNcricinfo previews the crucial Group A match between Australia and Sri Lanka

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale and Devashish Fuloria16-Jun-2013Match factsMonday, June 17, The Oval

Big PictureAmid the vexing appearances of rain in the last few days, three of the four teams will nervously wait for the result of the final Group B match. Sri Lanka, who more often than not make it to the knockouts in ICC tournaments, just need a win; if they win big – that is, by about 90 runs in a full 50-over game – they can better England’s net run rate and finish top of the group. Australia, who have looked a shadow of their usual selves, need to win by about 125 runs to lift their NRR above that of New Zealand and knock them out. If they bat second and Sri Lanka score 200, Australia will need to chase the target down in about 27 overs. New Zealand, who looked good to make it to the next round till a day ago, need Australia to win but not absolutely thump Sri Lanka. The London weather may interrupt the match but is expected to hold better than in Cardiff or Edgbaston. If Sri Lanka do beat Australia by a big enough margin to leap over England, they will fix a semi-final date with South Africa at The Oval. The second-placed team from the group will play India in Cardiff.Although, Sri Lanka and New Zealand have better chances than Australia, it is Sri Lanka who have the situation in their control. Their batting showed form during the chase against England and their bowling was exceptional in the narrow loss to New Zealand. However, they have shown over-dependence on their three stalwarts for steering their batting and their long-awaited young brigade is yet to show signs of maturity. Sangakkara was the lone ranger against New Zealand and led the chase against England with a brilliant century. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene played useful hands at The Oval too, but if Sri Lanka are to make further progress, their young batsmen will need to shoulder some of the burden of the seniors.Australia find themselves in a strange position. The team has cruised to the knockout stages in the past, but this time, they are in danger of being eliminated without a win. Michael Clarke admitted the team was affected by the off-field controversies, but on the field they have lacked punch in their batting. The failures of Shane Watson and the absence of David Warner and Clarke have meant the batting order has never looked menacing. Stand-in captain George Bailey has shown good form with his two half-centuries, but if Australia are to make a serious attempt at improving their net run rate apart from winning the game, they will need Watson to fire.Form guide(most recent first, last five completed games)
Australia: LWWWW
Sri Lanka: WLLWL
Watch out for…It was against Sri Lanka earlier this year that Phillip Hughes burst into one-day international cricket with a century on debut and proved that he should not be considered a Test-only player. Three single-figure scores followed but he finished the five-match series in Australia with another hundred, an unbeaten 138 that set up an Australian victory to draw the series. Hughes’ free-wheeling style can be suited to the 50-over format but he is yet to show his best form on this trip and threw his wicket away against England when he became tied down. A big score could not only help Australia stay in the series but might give Hughes the morale boost he needs ahead of the Ashes.A confident Nuwan Kulasekara is not what the Australians were hoping to face in this match. Fortunately for them his form in the previous match was most impressive for his batting – a brilliant 58 not out from 38 balls as a pinch-hitting No.5 – rather than his bowling. But they know precisely how dangerous he can be in swinging conditions, as they found to their detriment at the Gabba earlier this year. Kulasekara was the architect of Sri Lanka’s outstanding bowling effort to dismiss Australia for 74 in a match in which the hosts were lucky not to fall for their lowest ever ODI total, as they were 9 for 40 when the final pair came together. Rest assured that this Australian batting line-up will be just as wary of Kulasekara at The Oval as they will of the always threatening Lasith Malinga.Team newsMichael Clarke trained with the squad in the lead-up to the match but was still considered an unlikely starter, with Australia’s medical staff and team management taking a cautious approach with his back injury ahead of the Ashes. Xavier Doherty came in for Mitchell Starc last game and is expected to retain his position.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 George Bailey (capt), 5 Adam Voges, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.Shaminda Eranga was expensive in the win over England at the same venue and could be challenged for a place in the side by either Thisara Perera or the spinner Sachithra Senanayake.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Lahiru Thirimanne, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Thisara Perera / Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Lasith Malinga.Pitch and conditionsThere were plenty of runs available at The Oval when England and Sri Lanka played there on Thursday and the forecast for London on Monday is for a cloudy day with the risk of showers.Stats and trivia Sri Lanka have won six of their past 10 one-day internationals against Australia Should Australia fail to progress past the group stage it will be the first time since 2000 that they have not reached the semi-finals of a Champions Trophy or ICC KnockOut Kulasekara needs 19 runs and one wicket to become the fourth Sri Lankan to the double of 1000 runs and 150 wickets in ODIs, after Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas and Upul Chandana Adam Voges has played Australia’s past four ODIs, his longest consecutive streak of matches in a spread-out career spanning nearly six and a half yearsQuotes”In the last two years or so we’ve been very consistent against Australia and we’ve played them very well. We managed to handle a lot of situations better than them, so hopefully we can continue that.”
“Once someone in the top four goes on to make a hundred, the other guys bat around him. I’d like to see that happen in this game.”

Tour schedules, NCA revamp on BCCI working commitee agenda

As has been the case with all the major BCCI meetings in the last quarter, N Srinivasan’s anticipated presence will be the most intriguing factor during the working committee meeting in Kolkata on Sunday, the last of the board’s annual cycle

SA, NZ tours also on the agenda

The working committee is also set to discuss the itineraries for India’s forthcoming tours to South Africa and New Zealand, and the Asia Cup that is likely to be sandwiched between the New Zealand tour and IPL 2014.
It is unlikely that a final decision will be made at the meeting but the committee is likely to arrive at a consensus about a reworked schedule for the South Africa tour that will be presented to Cricket South Africa. At the moment, the itinerary includes two Twenty20s, seven ODIs, three Tests and as many tour games. The proposed itinerary is likely to feature two tour games, three Tests, five ODIs and a single Twenty20 international.
As for the New Zealand tour, although nothing has been made official yet, it is likely that New Zealand Cricket will be offered two Tests, two ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals, scheduled between the South Africa tour and the Asia Cup.

As has been the case with all the major BCCI meetings in the last quarter, N Srinivasan’s anticipated presence will be the most intriguing factor during the working committee meeting in Kolkata on Sunday, the last meeting of the board’s annual cycle.Srinivasan has refrained from discharging his duties as president after temporarily stepping aside in June to let former BCCI and ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya run the board’s day-to-day affairs. However, he could well attend his first working committee meeting since June on Sunday.Though it could not be ascertained whether Srinivasan will preside over the meeting, thus taking over as the BCCI president, it is all but certain that he will attend the meeting at least as president of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Irrespective of Srinivasan’s presence at the meeting, he will still have to sign the board’s accounts for the year, which will be ratified on Sunday. The notification, date and venue of the annual general meeting, which is decided by the working committee, is also likely to be finalised in the meeting on Sunday.Technically, it won’t be a problem for him to sign these documents even if he chooses not to attend the meeting. “The constitution allows only the president to officially appoint the secretary and treasurer. Didn’t he do that even after stepping aside?” a BCCI official pointed out.Two days before Srinivasan stepped aside as president, Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke resigned their posts as secretary and treasurer respectively. They cited displeasure over the manner in which the BCCI had reacted to the IPL spot-fixing scandal, which saw Srinivasan’s son-in-law and a senior official of Chennai Super Kings, Gurunath Meiyappan, being arrested by Mumbai police. Sanjay Patel and Ravi Savant were named secretary and treasurer on June 6 and 10 respectively. The working committee is also expected to discuss and ratify various proposals related to the revamp of the National Cricket Academy. These include abolishing the three specialist academies (batting in Mumbai, pace bowling in Mohali and spin bowling in Chennai) and replacing them with six regional academies. Tie-ups with the MRF pace academy in Chennai, to let India bowlers use their facilities and expertise, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association, for use of the Alur facility near Bangalore, are also on the agenda.”KSCA is our member, and just like they offered us space to run NCA, they are offering us another facility. We haven’t planned anything on financial details as yet,” Prof Ratnakar Shetty, BCCI’s general manager – game development, said on Saturday. “As for MRF, we are planning a long-term tie-up with them. This is for the training and rehab of fast bowlers, and whenever (Glenn) McGrath (the pace academy’s head) is there, our bowlers could go there.”

Bangladesh leadership blames poor batting for loss

Moments before Mushfiqur Rahim announced his resignation as captain, he and his deputy Mahmudullah had blamed the Bangladesh top order for the 1-2 defeat

Moments before Mushfiqur Rahim announced his resignation as captain, he and his deputy Mahmudullah had blamed the Bangladesh top order for the 1-2 defeat to Zimbabwe. Mushfiqur was among the top five batsmen who hadn’t scored a half-century in the series.Bangladesh had also lost all three tosses, but Mushfiqur said it was a matter of handling the conditions rather than relying on luck. They had gone 1-0 up after the first game in Harare but lost the next two.”Luck is not everything,” Mushfiqur said. “We are a much better team than how we played in this ODI series but we couldn’t prove it, especially with the bat. None of the top five could score a fifty in the series, which is very disappointing. We regularly lost early wickets, which affected our scoring rate. If we had scored 270 on all three occasions, it would have been a different ball game.”Obviously that’s [complacent] what they looked like. I wouldn’t say Zimbabwe bowled too badly but we lost early wickets and we went into the last ten overs with only a few wickets in hand. It hampered our performance.”Mushfiqur, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mohammad Ashraful averaged less than 22 in the series, and Bangladesh often replied on the lower-middle order to bail them out of tough spots. Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah were the only batsmen to aggregate more than 100 runs in the series.”I wouldn’t blame the wicket. I would rather say that the top-order didn’t bat well,” Mushfiqur said. “We couldn’t do that well in the first match either. In all three matches, the lower middle-order backed up well.”I think the toss was also very important, so we also needed some luck. Our target was to bat second, because we are good at chasing totals. But we couldn’t do well with the bat, and hence lost the series.”

Herath strikes give Sri Lanka the edge

A Rangana Herath double-strike in the final session turned the game Sri Lanka’s way in Colombo

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran18-Mar-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
After a fighting knock Jahurul Islam threw his wicket away, storming out to Rangana Herath only to be stumped•AFP

In the 60th over of Bangladesh’s innings, the Premadasa Test was evenly poised. They had comfortably wiped out the first-innings deficit of 106, the opener Jahurul Islam had sweat dripping down his face after nearly four hours of resolute batting and was closing in on his first Test half-century, and the stylish Monimul Haque was again showing he was not out of place at the Test level.Suddenly, Jahurul had a rush of blood, storming out to try loft Rangana Herath; he missed the ball and was stumped. He swung the bat at the pitch in such frustration at the dismissal that he lost control of it and it slipped out of his hand. There were more disappointed swipes of the bat as Jahurul made his way to the pavilion. It was a feeling of disappointment that Bangladesh fans have come to know well, as their side again squandered hours of good work in a couple of minutes. Mahmudullah was done in next ball by a ripper from Herath, and suddenly Bangladesh were effectively 37 for 4 and from an even footing, the match had twisted Sri Lanka’s way.Till that moment 10 overs from close, Bangladesh had every reason to be satisfied with the day’s play. Their attack has faced plenty of punishment from Kumar Sangakkara over the years but they dismissed him in the tenth over of the morning to ensure Sri Lanka’s lead didn’t get out of hand. They had an agonising six-minute wait for that decision though, as the third umpire watched endless replays to determine whether Sangakkara had nicked the ball through to the wicketkeeper.Shaminda Eranga then struck some forceful blows with the bat to stretch the first-innings advantage beyond 100, but the Sri Lankan tail was soon polished off by the variations of offspinner Sohag Gazi. Nuwan Kulasekara edged a Gazi delivery that zipped unexpectedly away, giving Mushfiqur Rahim a fifth catch of the innings – a Bangladesh record.Bangladesh have an appalling Test record against Sri Lanka, losing every match before this series by big margins. Sri Lanka would have been confident of extending that record after taking a substantial first-innings lead. That too on a track where it hasn’t been easy to bat and with a heavy outfield that doesn’t suit Bangladesh’s boundary-based batting, but Tamim Iqbal and Jahurul erased those thoughts with a gritty 91-run stand.Tamim began with a typically flamboyant cut for four, and powered the ball several times around point but it wasn’t the whirlwind innings usually associated with him. With the pitch still by no means treacherous, he played the waiting game, picking the deliveries to punish.Though Herath was caned for a six each by Tamim and Jahurul in one over, it was mostly slow going from Bangladesh. Jahurul was reprieved early on, with Suranga Lakmal shelling a caught-and-bowled chance, after which he showcased his watertight defence. That six off Herath was the only boundary he hit in the second session. After the seamers tired, Sri Lanka tried spin from both ends, with Herath and Tillakaratne Dilshan, but that too proved fruitless. About 20 minutes before tea, Angelo Mathews decided to bring back his fastest bowler, Eranga, and the move worked, as Eranga got Tamim to chop onto the stumps.Mohammad Ashraful then had his second failure of the match as he stayed on the backfoot to a pitched-up delivery from Herath. The ball spun past his weak defensive shot and crashed into the top of off.Fears of a Bangladesh collapse were stemmed as Jahurul continued to concentrate as hard as ever, and Mominul played with the confidence of a man who had just started his Test career with two half-centuries. The quick bowlers weren’t getting much help, and Sri Lanka who had packed the side with three seamers, turned to the part-time spin of Dilshan to assist Herath. Jahurul was calmly progressing towards his maiden Test half-century, after failing to reach there despite passing 30 on four previous occasions, and Bangladesh were looking at ease. Then came Jahurul’s moment of madness, and Bangladesh slipped. They could have been in further trouble if Nuwan Kulasekara had clasped an overhead chance off Mominul at mid-off or Mathews had clung on to an edge from Mushfiqur. Those let-offs allowed Bangladesh to reach stumps four down.
