Germany dominated the early exchanges, with Max Moerstedt coming close to scoring in the opening moments. However, it was Paris Brunner, a standout player from Borussia Dortmund, who opened the scoring from the spot to hand Germany the lead. In the second half, Noah Darvic extended Germany's lead with a goal on 51 minutes.

Saimon Bouabre struck first for France to ignite a comeback before Mathis Amougou found the leveller just five minutes from regulation time which forced penalties.

Tidiam Gomis missed his attempt while Almugera Kabar scored for the Germans to be crowned global champions.

Brunner was awarded the Golden Ball for his stellar performances throughout the tournament. He rose to the occasion when the stakes were high as he netted a brace in the semi-final against Argentina and also in the title decider.

Agustin Ruberto won the Golden Boot after scoring eight goals. Meanwhile, French goalkeeper Paul Argney was awarded the Golden Glove for his safe hands between the sticks.

Brunner showcased his exceptional talent as the joint-top scorer of the U17 Euros, earning him the prestigious gold Fritz Walter medal – the highest youth award in Germany for his age group. In the U19 Bundesliga, the 17-year-old has demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess, netting 10 times in just eight games this season.

Arsenal player ratings vs Fulham: Gunners left red-faced in first slip-up of the season despite Eddie Nketiah's starring role

Mikel Arteta'a side recovered from conceding in the first minute to take the lead, only for a slip in concentration to allow a late equaliser

On a rainy London evening with thunder echoing over the broadcast at the Emirates, Arsenal and Fulham battled back-and-forth for the entire 90 minutes. An error from Thomas Partey less than 60 seconds into the match saw the Cottagers take an early lead and then chaos ensued.

A 66th minute spot-kick from Bukayo Saka levelled the match after Fabio Vieira was brought down in the box and then, nine minutes later, Vieira flew forward again. The Portuguese international played a pinpoint cross into the box and striker Eddie Nketiah fired home, leaving the Gunners convinced they had secured all three points.

Despite Calvin Bassey earning a red card, Fulham refused to give up, however, and, in the 87th minute, their efforts were rewarded after midfielder Joao Palhinha struck home off a corner kick to level the match.

Solid at the back, locked down the Fulham attack and was consistently in the right spot.

Jakub Kiwior (6/10):

Did exactly what was asked of him on the left flank of defense.

Thomas Partey (4/10):

Declan Rice (6/10):

Helped control the tempo of the match and drove Arsenal back into the match.

Kai Havertz (5/10):

Missed a golden chance in the first half and still doesn't look comfortable in a midfield role.

Martin Odegaard (7/10):

A brilliant performance from the Gunners midfield talisman again, but lacked a clinical finish throughout the match.

Bukayo Saka (7/10):

Scored a 66th minute penalty kick and was relentless on the wing all afternoon.

Leandro Trossard (4/10):

Subbed out at half-time, little to zero impact on the match through the first 45 minutes.

Gabriel Martinelli (6/10):

Very little impact on the match, but linked up well over the final stretch with the rest of the attack.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (7/10):

Kayode & Nigerian strikers who didn't realise their potential

As the ex-ManchesterCity man turns 29, we remember six Nigerian strikers who never realised their potential

DepophotosOlarenwaju Kayode

Currently featuring with Sivasspor in the Turkish top flight—on loan from Ukraine giants Shakhtar Donetsk—it doesn’t seem that long ago that Kayode was signing for English giants ManchesterCity.

It was an odd move at the time, with Kayode then approaching his mid-20s and not the kind of youth prospect with time to develop on his side.

He had enjoyed an excellent scoring record with Austria Vienna before that move, but has struggled to score consistently since—barring a decent scoring run on loan at Gaziantep.

The Nigeria caps have dried up after he featured four times for the national side in 2017.

AdvertisementGettyIsaac Success

Watford’s record signing when he signed for the Hornets from Granada for a fee estimated to be around £12.5 million in 2016, it’s fair to see that deal never truly worked out for player nor club.

The striker’s time in Hertfordshire was mired by injury, loss of form and off-field controversies, and he ended his spell at the club with a miserable three goals in 63 league games across the Premier League and the Championship.

This season, on loan at Udinese, he’s registered his career best tally for goal contributions, although don’t expect him to add to his two Nigeria caps any time soon.

Getty ImagesJulius Aghahowa

Broke onto the scene at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was the tournament’s joint top scorer and caught the eye with his somersaulting celebrations.

He proceeded to win a trio of Ukrainian titles with Shakhtar Donetsk, although Aghahowa’s career took a wrong turn in his mid-20s when he signed for Wigan Athletic.

He failed to net in the Premier League, wouldn’t represent Nigeria again after 2007, and even a return to Shakhtar—wither another domestic title—couldn’t quite reignite his career.

Getty.Josh Maja

Contrary to others on this list, Maja still has time on his side to realise his potential and fulfil the hype that accompanied the early stages of his career.

However, he is running out of time and it increasingly appears as though we won’t live up to the immense expectations that accompanied him at Sunderland.

Currently with StokeCity in the Championship, he’s scored just once on loan this season, struggling to impress in the second tier, and in fact, has netted just 13 goals with Girondins de Bordeaux, Fulham and the Potters since leaving Sunderland in 2018.

Nonetheless, the 23-year-old is skilful, impresses in the build-up play, and can still be a hit—he just needs the right move this summer.

McGuire is one of the most sought after strikers in MLS at the moment, and was unfortunately the victim of a failed transfer abroad in January. Lamine Yamal's adidas poster boy deal and link to Lionel Messi is no coincidence – Barcelona's gifted wonderkid is a megastar in the making and just what financially crippled Catalans need

The teenager has the talent and commercial appeal to become the face of the Catalan club but can he succeed where past prodigies failed?

In 2006, a young player out of the Barcelona academy signed a deal with adidas. The agreement, reportedly worth around $500,000 per year, felt like a hefty investment for a 19-year-old. After all, the player hadn't yet played a full season of professional football. By the end of the previous season, he had scored six goals and added three assists. He only had 11 top-flight starts to his name.

That deal, for that player, Lionel Messi, proved to be a bargain for Adidas. Now, 18 years later, another La Masia graduate has done the same thing. Lamine Yamal, another right-winger out of the Barcelona academy, penned a long-term agreement to be one of the faces of adidas' global football brand. He will be the only other player in the world to wear Messi's exact boots – adding a visual link to a spiritual connection that has been drawn between the two for some time.

And though it will lead to immense pressure on the teenager, it is an ideal arrangement for the Balugrana. Since Messi left, the Catalan club have lacked a central marketable star – a world class presence who can not only change a game but also sell shirts in spades. Yamal, the newly minted face of adidas, can be that player.

adidas partnership with Lamine Yamaladidas partnership with Lamine YamalThe adidas deal

Yamal's deal was announced in a very modern way. A brief video showed Yamal, sitting on his childhood bed, clad in all-adidas gear, smiling at the camera. The alarm clock next to him beeps, and shows the time "3:04" – a reference to the area code he grew up in. Yamal laces up Messi's boots, and is then shown running onto a football pitch. He throws up his signature celebration, before breaking out a series of tricks and flicks.

It's comparable to the ad Jude Bellingham, another young star, recently featured in for the famous brand. This was a well-thought-out thing, something meant not only to curate an image but also highlight a burgeoning talent.

The company explained their choice, too.

"Adidas is proud to confirm Lamine Yamal joining the adidas family as of today, wearing the X Crazyfast; perfectly suited to his agile and explosive style of play on the wing. Lamine grew up in Rocafonda, 40 minutes from his club’s training ground, and remains proud of his roots in the area," it said in a statement.

"The partnership announcement film that has been posted on adidasFootball channels in collaboration with Lamine celebrates his football journey and connection to the 304, Rocafonda’s area code," it added.

The exact terms of the deal have not been made public. But the video alone shows that this is a serious commitment to an exciting talent. And Yamal deserves it, too.

Advertisement(C)GettyImagesThe search for Messi's successor

There is a prevailing sense that the Blaugrana have been searching for a player like Yamal for some time. The idea of a 'new Messi' has long haunted the halls of La Masia, Barcelona's famed youth academy. At times, it seems like an obsession.

He comes from a long-line of supposed Messi successors – most of which have been unequivocal failures. Bojan, Messi's contemporary at the club, burned out fast – and later admitted that the comparisons to the world's best left a serious mark on his mental health. Giovani Dos Santos and Riqui Puig received much the same treatment – and never delivered on the promise.

The closest thus far has been Ansu Fati. He seemed an ideal replacement. Fifteen years younger than Messi, but a similarly exciting player, he was given the No.10 shirt when the Argentine reluctantly left for PSG in 2021. But that, too, proved to be too much for the teenager, who, four knee surgeries later, is struggling to make the grade at Brighton.

GettyYamal up to the task?

Yamal, it would seem, is the closest thing the Blaugrana have developed to a viable replacement.

The positional similarities are here: Yamal is a left-footed right winger. The skills are, too. Yamal can beat a player with his dribbling prowess and find the bottom corner with an angled shot.

He also has just enough swagger about his game to wow the Barcelona faithful without overplaying in key areas.

The stats – five goals and four assists in all competitions – don't jump off the page. But superstardom stretches beyond numbers. It's about the intangible qualities. Yamal has them.

GettyA godsend for boring Barcelona

It's something that the current Barca squad is missing all over the pitch. A cursory glance at the starting XI shows a number of very talented and likeable footballers – but no global megastars. The word 'Galactico' is only used in a different major sporting city in Spain.

Still, players of that same stratospheric talent are hard to come by. The Blaugrana have always had at least one. Messi and Neymar were there at the same time. Before them were Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff.

This iteration of Barca – outside of burgeoning star Yamal – doesn't really have one. Robert Lewandowski will go down as a legend of the game. But his fame doesn't stretch beyond football; and he isn't one for massive ad campaigns, either. Pedri, Gavi and Frenkie de Jong are all midfield artists, but share the same issue.

Ronald Araujo, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Jules Kounde and Ilkay Gundogan all have social media presences – almost all footballers do these days. Still, none of them are impactful enough to make waves beyond football fan communities. You'd struggle to find a kid on the streets of Catalonia aspiring to be a tidy French full-back.

It is ironic that this all comes just nine months removed from a season of immense success. Barca coasted their way to a first Spanish top flight title since 2019 last season, claiming La Liga by 10 points. But the manner in which they won didn't catch the eye. This was an excellent defensive team that only let in 20 goals all season. They scored 15 fewer than in the 2020-21 campaign, a season in which the Blaugrana finished third. Put more simply: this version of Barcelona is boring.

Gifting Barca the title! Winners, losers & ratings as Asensio penalty miss condemns miserable Real Madrid to Mallorca defeat

Los Blancos could be as many as eight points behind their biggest rivals by Sunday night as their poor recent form continued

It's all getting a bit nervy in Madrid. Real have endured a turbulent few weeks, dropping points to Real Sociedad and Villarreal, while Barcelona continue to win. And it got worse on Sunday, with Los Blancos turning in a lifeless performance against Mallorca, crumbling to a 1-0 defeat and giving their arch-rivals a real chance to pull away in the title race.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was injured in the warm-up, but there was little back-up Andriy Lunin could do about Mallorca's opener, as Vedat Muriqi glanced his header off Nacho, who helped the ball loop into the net after 13 minutes.

Carlo Ancelotti's side responded with long spells of possession, but had little to show for it. This was mostly a makeshift Madrid side, with Karim Benzema and Eder Militao out with injuries, while Toni Kroos and Luka Modric were only named among the substitutes.

Real have made a habit of dramatic comebacks in the last 18 months, but this time, it didn't come off. Marco Asensio wasted their best chance, missing from the penalty spot after Vinicius Junior was fouled, but they struggled to create many more clear-cut chances.

Barcelona, meanwhile, were likely laughing, and have the chance to move themselves well clear at the top with a win over Sevilla later on Sunday.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Aurelien Tchouameni:

While the injury issues have mounted up elsewhere, Carlo Ancelotti was handed a boost with the full return of Tchouameni for this one. Real have played around with their options in defensive midfield in recent weeks, as Eduardo Camavinga and Toni Kroos have both slotted into the position, with varying degrees of success. But Tchouameni is the main man, and he was effective as ever against Mallorca. The France international controlled the midfield for 70 minutes, completing the most passes in the match and winning all-but one of his duels. He was replaced with 20 minutes remaining as Madrid opted for a more attacking setup, and they notably lacked authority without him.

Eduardo Camavinga:

Speaking of young stars, has there been a more versatile player in Europe since the World Cup? When Camavinga slotted in at left-back for France in Qatar, many were puzzled. However, it worked out fine for the finalists, with the central midfielder turning in a solid shift at an unfamiliar position. Madrid have asked him to do the same for two games straight now, and Camavinga has thrived. He's not a natural fit, but his one-on-one defending is excellent. He had some crucial interventions in this one, including one perfectly-timed slide tackle to prevent a clear chance early on. He was eventually moved to centre-midfield, and looked equally comfortable there. What a talent.

Barcelona:

The Blaugrana must be laughing. If they beat struggling Sevilla on Sunday, they can go eight points clear halfway through the season, with their biggest rivals in morbid form. It's always important to pick up points in title races, but this loss felt like a particularly bad one for Madrid. Mallorca is never an easy place to play, but it's games like this that can be so crucial come the end of the season. Barca have managed to negotiate such contests in recent weeks, and that just might be the difference.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Thibaut Courtois:

Courtois was slated to grab his usual starting spot in goal, but suffered a left leg injury in the warm-up. The extent of his knock hasn't been revealed, but reports suggest that the goalkeeper hurt his adductor muscle – an issue that could keep him out for weeks if it's serious. His back-up, Andriy Lunin, was serviceable and had admittedly little to do, but losing Courtois is a big blow for Real. The Belgian is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and has kept them alive countless times over the last few years. Los Blancos have a number of key games coming up, highlighted by a Champions League knockout tie with Liverpool, and will hope to have their No.1 back by then.

Marco Asensio:

Asensio has generally improved over the last few weeks, his development highlighted by a wonderful strike to give Madrid the lead over Valencia in midweek. But he blew his chance on Sunday, seeing a penalty saved by Predrag Rajkovic midway through the second half. And in a 1-0 loss, it served as the defining moment. The winger turned in an otherwise unremarkable performance, a poor showing that could define Madrid's season.

Carlo Ancelotti:

Ancelotti has made this Madrid team successful by lack of intervention. They win so much because the players don't necessarily need a rigid structure. But when injuries hit, the cracks start to show. On Sunday, it was the lack of Benzema that really hurt. Ancelotti insisted on deploying Rodrygo as a false nine, an experiment that hasn't worked for some time, and the Brazilian couldn't really decide where he was playing. First, he dropped deep, then he stayed high. Next, Ancelotti made the decision to hand an out-of-form Fede Valverde a start. The Uruguayan perhaps needed a rest, and looked lost for long stretches. Chances are, the legendary manager will piece things together once Benzema and co. return. Until then, things might get tricky.

Getty ImagesReal Madrid Ratings: Defence

Andiry Lunin (6/10):

Thrown into the XI at the last minute after Courtois was injured in the warm-up. Unlucky to see a deflected header loop in. Was otherwise a spectator.

Dani Carvajal (6/10):

Back in the side after a couple of weeks off, and needed a while to grow into the game. Crucial in stopping some late Mallorca counter-attacks.

Nacho (6/10):

Very unfortunate to concede an own goal. Redeemed himself with some nice recoveries and tidy passing.

Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Didn't have much to do with Mallorca opting for a mostly defensive structure. Missed a last-minute header that would have seen Madrid escape with a point.

Eduardo Camavinga (7/10):

His manager admitted that he doesn't like playing full-back, but Camavinga's one-on-one defending is good enough for him to be a regular there. Ironically looked less effective when moved to a central role.

Getty ImagesMidfield

Fede Valverde (5/10):

Really needed a day off, but was thrown back into the fold. Yet another poor showing.

Aurelien Tchouameni (7/10):

Offered much-needed defensive cover and controlled the midfield. Madrid looked far less convincing without him.

Dani Ceballos (6/10):

Did a lot of dirty work, but didn't offer much of a creative spark.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion is a lifelong Blancos supporter despite his uncle, Miguel Angel Nadal, playing more than 200 games for Clasico rivals Barcelona in the 1990s. He continues to keep a close eye on events at Santiago Bernabeu and would like to see a French World Cup winner lured away from Paris Saint-Germain.

Quizzed by on who he would like to see snapped up by Real, Nadal said: “Would another forward be welcome right now? I think so but…I want Mbappe to come, I don’t have any problem with that at all, quite the opposite. I’d be happy if he came! Of course I like Mbappe, who doesn’t like Mbappe? He didn’t have any obligation to come before. Real Madrid is Real Madrid and is bigger than any other player. But Mbappe doesn’t have any obligation to come when us fans want him to come.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Real have been heavily linked with Mbappe for some time, as he fits the Galacticos recruitment model of president Florentino Perez. A deal may be done at some stage, with Nadal saying when asked if he would like to occupy the Bernabeu boardroom after Perez: “I don’t know. I promise that it’s not always been a dream of mine. But if you ask me if I’d like to be Real Madrid president, I think I would. But first of all, we’ve got the best possible president at the moment. On top of that, how I feel today might not be how I feel tomorrow. And then you never know what can happen in life. You have to know if you’re capable of doing that type of thing. I’m quite realistic with myself, I more or less know my limitations. I don’t know if I’d be capable of doing it or not. Anyway, time will tell.”
